Animals Nobody Loves
ASIN: 1897066864 |
Book Description
An appealing introduction to the animal kingdom.
You won't believe the amazing things that animals do -- how they communicate, how they find food, how they take care of their families.
Amazing Things Animals Do is jam-packed with astounding animal facts designed to introduce children to the fascinating wonders of animal behavior. It is a compilation of all four titles from the series of the same name: Little Wonders: Animal Babies and Their Families, Time to Eat: Animals Who Hide and Save Their Food, Side by Side: Animals Who Help Each Other, and Wild Talk: How Animals Talk to Each Other.
Did you know?
Some tiny finches eat their dinners off the backs of giant Galapagos tortoises?
An elephant's low rumble can travel right across the African plains?
Sea otters wrap their babies in seaweed so they won't float away in the water?
American alligator babies travel in their mothers' huge mouths?
Cheerful watercolor artwork and a picture book format make this title especially appealing for young children and a wonderful resource for learning about the animal world for the first time.
A Who's Who guide at the end of the book provides additional details about each species and its habitat, encouraging additional questioning and research for the older child.
Customer Reviews:
Great subject matter and format.......2007-09-13
A collection of short "stories" (about half page of text, the rest of each two-page spread is illustration) about various animals. They are divided into chapter categories: animals who help each other, animals babies, animals who hide and save their food, how animals talk to each other. We got this when my daughter was 3.5 and she was able to sit still for a few pages at a time and enjoy it. Now that she is 5 I consider it part of our science homeschool curriculum. Very good illustrations, and interesting subject matter for both kids and adults. Each animal description stands alone but it's a pretty thick book, so you can choose a short or long reading session.
I gave it 5 stars because it is difficult to find good "readaloud" material for younger kids that has enough words per page to encourage listening skills and imagination, but yet the content is appropriate and interesting for them.

Book Description
Amazing Things Animals Do, a series from Owl Books, offers a unique overview of animal behavior for young children. Children are fascinated by babies, and in Little Wonders they discover the amazing number of ways that animal babies around the world are cared for and grow. From the tiny seahorse to the mighty elephant, a wide range of animals and their parenting behaviors are accurately described and delicately illustrated.
Children will be enthralled by red-billed hornbills that protect their chicks with a wall of mud, baby kangaroos that somersault to safety in mother's pouch, baby sea otters wrapped in seaweed cradles to keep them safely anchored and warm, and more.
The beautifully detailed illustrations show each animal in its own environment. A special Who's Who section at the back of the book features animal photos with more information on each animal's size, habitat and habits.
Customer Reviews:
A little book with a lot of wonder.......2005-12-11
With clear, gentle language Marilyn Baillie introduces 12 different animal babies and their diverse families:
-- all-female herds of elephants that share baby-rearing duties
-- joey kangaroos that spend most of the first 9 months of their lives inside their mother's pouches
-- red-billed hornbirds, which seal themselves into tree cavities for protection
-- ocean-faring sea otter pups and their mothers
-- little brown bats, only children who share their upside-down roosts with hundreds of other bat pups
-- alligator babies, which count their mother's ferocious mouths for protection
-- as well as emperor penguins, orangutans seahorses, meerkats, polar bears, and cuckoo birds
This 32-page book also features small photographs and vivid watercolor-and-pencil illustrations. The last page contains a "Who am I?" quiz with clues ("I cling very tightly to my mother as we swing through the treetops") describing every baby animal included in the book.
With its age appropriate writing and entertaining stories stories about the diversity of animal life, Little Wonders is sure to be a hit with young children.

Customer Reviews:
A must have.......2007-08-07
This book is fantastic. The author literally fished almost every stream and wrote about them. The book is filled with photos and maps to help get a visual on what he is describing about each stream. I also found helpful the places to stay and eat he suggested. Make notes of your own next to each stream he wrote about. A must have when scouting new trout streams.
Excellent reference guide.......2003-11-07
I am a guide and fly fisherman in SE Minnersota and still refer to this book when I explore new water. Almost as good as having a guide with you. Mel Hayner MINNESOTAFLYFISHING.COM
Book Description
John King Fairbank was the West's doyen on China, and this book is the full and final expression of his lifelong engagement with this vast ancient civilization. It remains a masterwork without parallel. The distinguished historian Merle Goldman brings the book up to date, covering reforms in the post-Mao period through the early years of the twenty-first century, including the leadership of Hu Jintao. She also provides an epilogue discussing the changes in contemporary China that will shape the nation in the years to come.
Customer Reviews:
A visit to China.......2007-09-23
Excellent and comprehensive history of China. A must read for anyone going to see this country.
Saved Money.......2007-01-19
I saved a lot of money buying this book new from Amazon over buying it from B&N or the on-campus bookstore. It also arrived very quickly.
Book delivery.......2007-01-09
A little pencil writing in the book, but it is in excellent shape.
Great.......2006-12-21
This book is a great overview of Chinese history. While true that Spence's Volume has more artistic qualities this volume is mor than sufficient for the student of history. Clear and concise, this book describes the major events of Chinese history while integrating a plethora of supplemental and recent scholarship. Anyone interested in diving further into Chinese history can use Fairbank and Goldman as a launching platform.
An intro to and a Who's who of Sinology.......2006-06-22
An above average narative intro to the vast history of China. I find that the most useful section of this book is the quite detailed "further reading" section, in the back. More than anything this book is an essential guide to the self-taught student of China. Fairbank (he wrote almost all of it) offers us subtle primer to the major themes and discussion points of modern Sinology.
Also this book offers a more comprehensive study of pre-Qing China than one is apt to find in other similar works (though I do wish that section were even longer).

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2006-02-08
This book has many topics, but barely touches on each one, only giving you a few lines for each topic. Definately not enough to get any kind of useful information from.
Extremely disappointed with this book.
The Pug.......2003-07-18
An o.k. book with great pictures. The majority addresses dogs in general, not Pug specific issues, which is what I was looking for....
Good - but not great........2001-04-21
This is a good book about pugs but here is the breakdown of the book. It has 158 pages total, 93 pages apply to pugs but the rest are generic for any dog. The book covers ancestry of the pug, behavior, where to get a pug, dealing with a new pug puppy/adult, feeding, grooming (coat, nose, ears, eyes and mouth) nails, general disease prevention, safety and exercise. The best part of the book is the grooming section though I would have to say that most of the other sections cover pugs rather marginally. I have found much more detailed information on web sites. I would say it is a great book for someone who is considering a pug as a pet and wants to know their history and general information, but for a new owner, I'd choose a more detailed guide to care for your pug.
Good, but watch out!.......1999-08-18
This book is nearly identical, text-wise, to "The Essential Pug". These are both good, but about half of the info is generic for any breed. I'd recommend "The Essential Pug" (which, interestingly enough, has no author listed). It's several dollars cheaper and the pictures are much better.
I really like to buy one of the books........1999-05-26
I really like to receive o copy of the book in Spanis

Customer Reviews:
A MUST FOR ALL COLLECTORS OF 'PRESSED GLASS'.......2004-08-13
This is an absolutely wonderful book and a must for any glass collector. The book is factual, concise and worth every penny. The most impressive thing about this book are the pictures - they are clear!! They are in black and white and on good quality paper. Every single picture shows the pattern clearly and each pattern has pictures of several different pieces. There isn't a single pattern that isn't easily identifiable which can't be said for most such books.
A MUST FOR ' PRESSED GLASS' COLLECTORS!!.......2004-08-13
This is an absolutely fantastic book for those of us interested in glass patterns. The information is concise and factual and focuses on facts rather that prices. The pictures are what are really impressive - they are clear and are on good quality paper!! All pictures are black and white so that the patterns themselves can be seen perfectly. Also, several pieces are shown for each pattern. As far as an identification guide goes, this is the best.
Book Description
Learn about the edible and medicinal characteristics of 333 of the most common plant species of the Rockies. This book includes accounts of how the plants were used by Native Americans and early European settlers.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for Campers & Hikers.......2007-03-08
We've used this book on every occasion we've been either hiking and camping and that is quite a lot. We've found all sorts of edibles that we normally wouldn't have eaten.
Wonderful photos and organization.......2004-08-10
The first thing you notice about this book is its wonderfully sturdy construction. It is well made, ready to withstand some time in the woods with you!
Next you will notice that it is color coded. The tree section is green, shrubs orange, herbs burgandy etc. Within each section the plants are divided by families.
Each plant has at least one very good color photo. Most of them have two or three! Many also have illustrations. Some of the plants are covered in one page, others take two.
A typical page is: Top of the Page: Mint Family Herbs
The mint family is a two page spread with three nice photos. It says "Wild Mints Mentha spp." Then FOOD: These plants can be eaten alone as greens, raw or cooked. . . The next paragraph is MEDICINE: The active medicinal ingredient, menthol has been shown. . . OTHER USES: These aromatic plants were hung in dwellings as air-fresheners, and they were also crushed. . .
DESCRIPTION: Glandular-dotted perenials, smelling strongly of mint. . .The Description section also included info on where the plant is likely to be found. In a colored box at the bottom of the page WARNING: Wild mint and spearmint are high in pulegone, which stimulates the uterus. . .
Each plant includes information on poisonous look-likes if any, but there is also a full section on poisonous plants.
The book also includes a glossary and an index.
Because it is difficult for any one field guide to have EVERYTHING you are looking for, I like to use this book alongside Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide by Elias and Dykeman. I also really like Linda Kershaw's other book Plants of the Rocky Mountains.
A fascinating book for outdoor enthusiasts.......2004-03-27
The book has colour photographs for every plant listed, and all of the species are grouped according to family, for easy reference. Suggested preparations, identifying features and safety precautions are included for every plant in the book. There is a very important section on poisonous plants that every hiker/mountaineer should read. traditional Native medicinal uses are also listed.
I take this book everywhere I go.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, well written book.......2001-04-25
This is a really neat book! It covers over 150 edible and medicinal plants and includes both photographs and line drawings of the herbs and plants for an easier time identifying them. Each plant has the common and botanical name, as well as a write up on identification, distribution and habitat, and Preparation and uses. Many of them also have folk stories related to the plants from native cultures. The appendices include A Glossary of botanical terms, Summary of herbal therapuetic groupings, Herbal preparations, and sources and recommended readings.
All in all, if I where to bring one book with me, out in the wild... this would be the one.
