Book Description
Until now, surprisingly little information has been available to those who want to paddle Vancouver Island's many waterways. Enter Gary Backlund and Paul Grey. Building on the success of their first book, Easykayaker: A Guide to Laid Back Vancouver Island Paddling, the authors have compiled a comprehensive reference book for paddlers of all skill levels. In Kayaking Vancouver Island, the paddling duo guide their readers through trips ranging from a lazy day excursion in Victoria's historic Gorge waterway to an exciting multi-day voyage around Meares Island in Clayoquot Sound.
To research the book, the authors traveled from Sooke on the southern tip of the island to Port Hardy in the north, and from Zeballos on the west coast to Gabriola Island off the east coast. Along the way they interviewed local guides, outfitters and historians to get the most accurate information about their destinations. Combining a guidebook format with journal-like entries from their own travels, the authors cover everything from launch sites to lunch sites, which currents to avoid and which tides to ride. The book is also rich in local mythology, folklore and history. Writing with safety and (mostly) easy paddling in mind, Backlund and Grey rate paddling skills required for each area along with trip lengths and distances. They provide an insider's guide to local conditions and brief readers on tides, currents, charts, marine weather and coastal regulations.

Worst Kayak Guide book.......2007-08-15
I just went to Tofino for a weeks kayaking there. I took this guidebook and "Sea Kayak Barkley & Clayoquot Sounds". Comparing them both I quickly found this guidebook to be annoyingly full of warnings and light on details - "don't do this", "experts only", DANGER! DANGER! while the other guidebook talks about what you can do with lots more detail.
There is very little balance in this guidebook - it seems to be aimed at the complete novice paddler - so much of the book is about what not to do. It spends little or no time talking about options in different weather. Reading the book you get the impression that the area north of Tofino should not be attempted by us mere mortals.
I recommend the other guidebook and steer clear of this one.

TRACKING--SIGNS OF MAN, SIGNS OF HOPE is a complete guide to tracking and finding humans, alive and dead: lost children and adults, crime victims, escaped criminals.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome! I highly recommend this book........2007-05-15
I originally purchased this book as an add-on with an animal tracking book. My background is animal tracking with an interest in Search and Rescue (SAR). I thought this would help me with possible SAR missions in the forests that I frequent. To be quite honest, I didn't think I would ever really read this entire book because my schedule is tight and finding time to read -any- book is a challenge.
On a business trip I decided to take it along for killing time on the two hour flight. I began reading it and got half way through on the first half of the round trip. I found myself unable to put the book down. The meat and potatoes of this book are the fundamentals of tracking humans with practical application. Where I became addicted was the millitary account of an actual tracking scenario. This account is told alongside your learning of the basics.
If you are remotely interested in tracking people I highly recommend this book for you. It will definitely teach you fundamentals of tracking and tell you how to apply what you are learning. Make sure when you do begin to read the book that you have a few hours of time set aside because you will not be able to put it down.
Military personnel, this book is probably mandatory reading. The military aspect opend my eyes up to things I had no idea. I am not a military person but I now have a newfound respect for those serving in any service area.
not worth buying.......2007-01-09
this is a simple book showing what any militaristic tracking might show. could find this info in any of a dozen better sources. the only thing unique was the parts on human waste and body decomposition. not written very well.
A Must Read for Human Trackers.......2006-08-11
Anyone that has been a tracker in the Military or in Law Enforcement already has my utmost respect. I have taken tracking training from both Joel Hardin and David Scott-Donelan and would love to spend some "Dirt Time" with David Diaz. I thoroughly enjoyed his book and I highly recommend it for any type of tracking both civilian and/or military. This is the How-to for human tracking.
The author has a good mix of real life stories and information and concepts. Bottom-line this book helped me as a tracker. Enough said.
An excellent book heavily focused on military tracking.......2005-10-25
This book is primarily focused on the needs the military tracker, and that is the author's background. It does, indeed, attempt to present a systematic approach to the subject and largely succeeds. Although I am primarily interested in civilian search and rescue tracking, I found a lot to learn and consider in this book. An excellent complement to this book is "The SAS Guide to Tracking" by Bob Carss. Tom Brown's "The Science and Art of Tracking" also deserves a place on the tracker's bookshelf as well as Jack Kearney's "Tracking: A Blueprint for Learning How" and Tom Brown's "Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking."
Well ballanced.......2005-10-10
Like most books on man tracking there was to much focuss on hunting not tracking. Not all tracking is for clossing with the enemy. The book that does apply to the civilian tracker was well ballanced and points well made. This would make a great 1st tracking book.

Book Description
In terms of both words and images, the American comic book had a tremendous impact on popular culture. Comics could be funny and cute, or they could be bizarre, morbid, risque (acute accent), violent, and bursting with the subconscious desires of youth culture. The Classic Era of American Comics is a celebration of the golden era of American comics and the wonderful art and stories it produced. This volume takes a look at the pioneers of the comic book and the industry's founding connections with sleazy pulp magazines; the campaign for censorship in the fifties; the unstable and oftentimes unfair relationship between artists and publishers--how comic artists' work wasn't considered art at the time; and, of course, the exciting comics themselves.
The Classic Era of American Comics covers all of the genres--superheroes, westerns, crime, horror, war, science fiction, girl comics, animal characters, and more. It is vibrantly illustrated with more than 400 stunning color images and includes a foreword by Joe Kubert, editor of Sgt. Rock, illustrator of Hawkman, and producer of Fax from Sarajevo.

A Classic Book about a Classic Era.......2000-10-30
Actually, I would like to give this 4.5 stars.
The Classic Era of American Comics begins where comic books almost ended. With Fredrick Wertham, "Seduction of the Innocent and the congressional hearings that followed the publication of that book.
When writer address the history of a specific character in Comics they briefly go over the history of comics. Mr. Wright and Mr. Kubert take their time and give a much fuller history of the events that created comic books. Also included are many colorful old pictures of comic strips, and later, comic books. Dividing the book into sections, they not only cover the very beginning of comics that we know, but comics that have been forgotten. Also included are sections of Animal comics, Jungle comics with "good girl Art" and many other forms that have come and gone. All with splendid pictures.
But the most important aspect of this book was context. Often glossed over, Mr. Wright emphasizes the role Fredrick Wertham had in ending an era of comics. In his book, "Seduction of the Innocent" published in 1955, Mr. Wertham contended that comic books were evil. He claimed Superman was a Nazi. He also claimed that Batman and Robin were gay and just reading about them caused children to become gay. Most important, he claimed that reading comics caused Juvenile Delinquency. A major target, of course, was the EC horror comics. In this very balanced book, Mr. Wright and Mr. Kubert show some of the artwork that should have been aimed for an adult audience. Soon, congressional hearings were held and congress forced the industry to censor itself. The censorship was so heavy it almost destroyed the industry. Rather than just going after ghouls and goblins, or giving a rating system that would put adult comics out of the reach of children, the new Comic Code went after ideas such as civil rights, anti war sentiments and the evils of drug use. It took 15 years before an anti drug theme could return to comics. It certainly ended an era.
I had two, small disappointments with the book. Often the author would refer to specific covers or events but not reprint them. Basil Wolverton's Mad covers and Mac Raboy's Captain Marvel Jr. covers are two examples. Also, much of the artwork did not give creative credit to the artists who drew them and sometimes the year was left out. These should be considered minor points.
If you do like this book my I suggest that you also read Jim Steranko's The History of Comics Volume I and II.

very informative.......2006-11-10
Beautiful and very helpful book. I am very happy to have it in my reference book colection
Unique reference book for southeastern gardeners.......2006-10-03
This is a gorgeous book overflowing with beautiful color photos and sure to motivate any gardener. The intent is to help gardeners select plants that are compatible with specific growing conditions. It is comprised of three parts: Part 1 features "The Ten SmartGarden Tenets" which includes detailed sections on factors like assessing your site, choosing the best plants, working with nature, managing pests, keeping a garden journal, etc. The bulk of the book is Part 2 which is a plant selection catalog and features plants in every conceivable category (examples are "Drought Tolerant Trees," "Winter Flowering Shrubs," "Shrubs with Gray or Blue Foliage," "Vines for Small Arbors," etc.) Every plant has a photo and basic, general information is designated by a symbol. Part 3 covers gardening techniques with excellent step-by-step photos and directions on selecting plants, planting, pruning and propagation. Appendices includes gardening resources, web sites, horticultural organizations, and botanical gardens and arboreta in the U.S. The only issue I have from giving the book 5 stars is that even though the plant categories are endless, each section contains only about 8 or 10 plants and sometimes that just isn't enough to choose from. Still, the photos along are worth the price - this is a beautifully designed book.
A reference to over 3,000 plants.......2004-06-07
South-eastern gardeners won't want to miss the Society's Southeast Smartgarden Regional Guide, a reference to over 3,000 plants which grow well in the Southeast. With literally thousands of color photos accompanied by step-by-step gardening sequences and techniques, this is packed with fine detail.
Book Description
More and more Americans today are paying attention to how their cars are designed. Auto designers are now celebrities, and the look of your car has become as important as the clothes you wear. According to the New York Times Magazine, You are what you drive. Your car is a bold statement of individual identity. American Car Design Now is the first book to take a critical look at this phenomenon, with in-depth examinations of the creative process behind more than thirty contemporary models that embody the trends of the future, including the Crossfire, Mondeo, Thunderbird, Continental, Mark 9, Bengal, Vizon, Cien, and CTS.
The product of more than three years of research, this volume collects the author's essays and interviews with the design directors of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. The author gained unprecedented access to the notoriously secretive and guarded design studios of these car giants, and the result is an insider's perspective on the making of new American cars, of new American dreams.
American Car Design Now delves deeply into the individual characters behind the industry and shows how their different creative and managerial techniques translate to the finished models. With this unique analytical approach, American Car Design Now is a great addition to the shelves of not only auto industry professionals but designers and car enthusiasts of all types.

Brain food for your eyes.......2005-11-23
American Car Design Now is the benchmark book in car design as business management, as sculpture and as psychology. It lays a foundation and sets a standard for intelligent writing on car design, writing that trains your eye to see more. The book is built on interviews with key designers and design managers at Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. In three major sections it reveals and explores how managers make decisions about the broad concepts and how basics such as proportion and line, as well as defining details make or break the visual success of a design. The author coaxes inarticulate designers to reveal how they work, how the mind, the eye and the hand create car designs that thrill or bore us. Visual concepts in the mind of the author reveal things that would go unnoticed by designer and observers unequipped with these concepts. Visual analyses of the designs of specific cars show how and why many great car design concepts become dull blobs when translated into production cars. Analyses refer to photos illustrating the author' points. A rich set of interviews with significant car designers is appended. Finally there is a fundamental glossary of car design terms that is a must-have.
Car-design is a complex intersect of art, business and psychology that this book captures but does not simplify. You will earn what you learn from this book, but your effort will be rewarded. My only complaint that this book's handsome graphic design often does not track the text closely enough. Some photo references are incorrect, missing or distant from their discussion. Nevermind that: this book is essential reading for anyone involved in car design. Buy it now; get express shipping; take time off to read it.

Inside Design Now.......2003-09-24
The catalogue for the National Design Triennal at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum is an elegant distillation for those who cannot make it to New York before January 25, and includes essays by its four curators. The theme, in every aspect of design, from furniture to graphics, lighting to fashion, is pluralism. Standouts include Yusuke Obuchi's Wave Garden-a poetic alternate energy generator that rewards frugal consumers by becoming a maritime park at weekends; Loyand Ford's deconstructed clothes; and Stephen Wolfram's graphic portrayal of simplicity generating complexity-an inquiry that might, one day, summarize the workings of the universe in a few lines of code. Get the book and try to see the exhibition: both will stretch your mind and broaden your appreciation of what designers can do. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
Look, Read, Think.......2003-07-23
If you can't make it to New York to see the actual Triennial show at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, then this book is your best bet for a provocative survey of contemporary design. This is particularly true if you think of design as a big idea connecting print, interaction, motion, products, architecture and environments. You'll find a good balance of critical writing with images in this book. So it is something both to look at and to read and think about.

I am a fan of Maya's and I 'm familiar with her words of wisdom. She personifies the black literary scene in poetry. The insight in which Maya as a woman allows you the the reader to feel as the essence of your being is truly wonderful. I am a aspiring poet and one of my favorite pieces is Phenomanal Woman. I love to interpete this poem with advantgarde jazz dance movements, she is a great poet and teacher. This new release is sure to be just as great as her past books of poetry and essay's. The insight into the true black intelligentsia honest, bold and truthful.
Thanks Maya for your inspiration!
