A Great Book to Learn From.......2002-07-08
This book is truly a very good book for learning how to play the wonderful game of hockey both at the beginner level and advanced level. At the beginner level it shows and tell you how to skate, stop turn, foward and backward crossovers. It also has rules of the game which are especially helpful for the beginner level. It has drills that one should perform to get better. For the intermediate through advanced level it has even more drills and techniques that even the beginners should get to know. It shows how to shoot the puck defensive, offensive and even goalie tactics. It has a conditioning with nutrition chapter, pregame stretches and even the mental game. And finally at the end it even tells you how to build a rink and how to organize and coach a team. Even if you think you know everything about hockey I can almost guarantee you there is something in this 220 page hockey-training masterpiece. I've been playing for only two years and I have learned a ton from this book and you will most definitely too.
A comprehensive guide for new players.......2000-08-14
I've bought about 7 or 8 books on various aspects of hockey over the past few weeks, and each has taught me something, but I really needed one that could tell me *how the game is played* -- where I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to be doing in different situations. This book did just that by explaining the basics of offense and defense with both text and easy-to-follow diagrams. I have a good overall sense of the game now, as well as specific admonishments to keep in mind (like not to chase a puck carrier behind the goal, and not to follow crisscrossing forwards when backchecking). I plan to read this book again in a month (after I've played a few games on an organized team), and I fully expect to absorb even more.
Excellent for beginners learning the basics of ice hockey........1998-11-30
My team, the San Francisco Earthquakes, has several beginner players. Most of them had been to beginner hockey classes, but they still didn't know many of the basics. I set out to find a book that would provide these basic lessons and answer many of the new players' questions. I looked at several books, but this one had the best fit. It is written for beginners, but will also serve experienced players who need to review the basics. What to do, where to be, how to shoot, when to pass? These questions and many more are all answered clearly and simply. This is a book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced players may be looking for more insight than this book provides. My teammates now know what to do most of the time. If they'd only skate a little harder...
Book Description
This revised edition of Deborah Tannen's first discourse analysis book, Conversational Style--first published in 1984--presents an approach to analyzing conversation that later became the hallmark and foundation of her extensive body of work in discourse analysis, including the monograph Talking Voices, as well as her well-known popular books You Just Don't Understand, That's Not What I Meant!, and Talking from 9 to 5, among others. Carefully examining the discourse of six speakers over the course of a two-and-a-half hour Thanksgiving dinner conversation, Tannen analyzes the features that make up the speakers' conversational styles, and in particular how aspects of what she calls a 'high-involvement style' have a positive effect when used with others who share the style, but a negative effect with those whose styles differ. This revised edition includes a new preface and an afterword in which Tannen discusses the book's place in the evolution of her work. Conversational Style is written in an accessible and non-technical style that should appeal to scholars and students of discourse analysis (in fields like linguistics, anthropology, communication, sociology, and psychology) as well as general readers fascinated by Tannen's popular work. This book is an ideal text for use in introductory classes in linguistics and discourse analysis.

Understanding Misunderstandings.......2002-02-10
Deborah Tannen's book hit me with what should have been obvious years ago. During a recent conversation, a fellow student at the American University voiced some hesitation about applying for a master's degree in Sociology, because her undergraduate degree was in Music. Lacking a background in Sociology, she felt inadequate for the task. I replied that she might be surprised how much she her previous degree might open unusual research fields for her in Sociology. I commented that she could draw on her background in music to do some kind of research on the impact of music in people's lives or the similarity diversity of music across cultural lines. She then commented that finding funding was difficult and again, I said, "You can." Just search the Internet. There are so many scholarships and grants. You can do it.
Oddly, her body language when she shook my hand and said good-bye gave me the impression that she felt more assaulted than assured by our brief conversation.
Deborah Tannen's book explains in large measure what may have been happening. Tannen's book takes a simple dinner conversation between six people and shows what works and why as well as what fails and why. Among her examples is a matter of differing opinions about turn-taking. The "New Yorkers" in Tannen's book feel uncomfortable with silence. The British girl in the book feels a need for silence in order to contribute.
Tannen examines differing views of conversation pace, overlap, rate of speech, personal and non-personal topics and more. Tannen shows that some people feel discussion of personal topics is a method for building rapport, while others feel it is an invasion of privacy. Some feel more comfortable when discussing impersonal topics and this allows them to relax more and allows rapport to be established. Some of the participants in Tannen's study felt that a rapid response implied an interest in the topic, others felt that a rapid response implied a desire to move on to a more interesting topic.
Although Tannen's research did not touch on cross-cultural gaps, it inspired me to think about how conversations went wrong in Japan and in Egypt and why. What expectations were different between myself and my international friends. The woman thinking about seeking a master's degree in Sociology was an upper class Egyptian. Her sense of timing, ideas about appropriate topics for discussion, sense of physical space and ideas about appropriate tone are very different from mine. Interestingly Tannen notes that speech behavior patterns are learned early and remain largely unchanged throughout a life-time. While much of the data in this book was useful, this aspect seems invalid when examined in relationship to learning new languages. B.F. Skinner and Pavlov have shown how behaviors can be modified. No doubt that for the participants of Tannen's study who appear to spend most of their time within an American culture, her statement seems valid. However, taken to Marine Corps boot camp, where behaviors in general are changed radically, I believe a more detailed linguistic study would show a marked change in behavior patterns of participants before and after military training. Moreover, taken internationally, speech patterns learned through cultural immersion into a foreign language might also have a marked impact on speech behaviors. My Japanese is considerably lighter in tone and accompanied by a mild body language compared to my English. Similarly, my Arabic is considerably louder in tone and accompanied by a more expressive body language than my English.
Tannen notes at the end of her study that there is much more work to do in this field. Cross-cultural studies are one of the topics that she mentions as specifically worthwhile. Her concluding notes about rhythm, poetry and the literary parallels of spoken language made me think of the movie Matrix where the aliens enemy agents speak English, but with a decidedly odd and uncomfortable rhythm. Her comments about appropriate content make me think of most of the dialog in the movie Pulp Fiction. This movie was decidedly odd because it addressed issues in unusual contexts, such as religious discussions between gangsters participating in an assassination. These are, of course, extreme examples of odd content and form, but being extreme, they make the topics in Tannen's text easier to grasp.

Customer Reviews:
Great book with beautiful pictures.......2005-12-22
I do not own a lovebird and had never owned any pet bird at all, but I had received this book as a gift and had read it several times since then! Some of the pictures are beautiful and high in quality, and if I had a lovebird, this book would have all the information I would need, from where to buy a lovebird, to breeding and hand-feeding babies. The endearing traits of lovebirds described in the book, such as an "affectionate lovebird [hiding] in it's human's clothes or underneath long hair" has definitely made me want to own a lovebird as soon as it becomes possible for me.
Helpful and Informative.......2004-05-25
I've had lovebirds for a few years, and I'm always looking for new information about them. This book is one of the best I've found. The text is clear and the advice is easy to put into practice. The photos are pretty as well. I highly recommend it.

Not that great of a kit.......2000-06-06
The folder that you put the quarters into only shows one side of the quarters. For these new quarters, I wanted to be able to see both sides of the quarters. Whitman's other binder is much better.
Book Description
Loaded with plants that conjure visions of tropical islands and pina coladas, this book makes real every gardener's dream of living in a private Eden. Detailed, step-by-step instructions guide gardeners through the process of cultivating their own tropical gardens with thick foliage and bright, bold plants.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent how-to book on tropical garden plants!.......2005-07-19
This book is an excellent collection of tropical garden plant types and the zones they do best in. It will give you an idea of the zones many tropical plants and sub-tropical plants will do best in, however, some will even do well outside of the specified zones if they are in a microclimate. It also contains information on how to propogate many of the plants therein.
If I had one bit of advice for the author, it would be interesting to re-organize the book by zone, such that those who live in various zones could easily find which tropical style plants are best suited for their particular zone (as well as which are in an adjacent zone and therefore might make it if given a bit of a micro-climate).
Oveall, a great addition to my tropical gardening library!
OUTSTANDING BOOK ON TROPICAL GARDENING.......2003-08-04
This is the best book on tropical gardening I have ever found. It has beautiful pictures & also lists what plants to group together to make a showplace out of your yard. Also tells you which plants are cold hardy! The cold hardiness is something that a lot of books fail to mention, which means constantly looking through reference books for more info. This book goes with me everytime I go to purchase plants. Excellent book!

Book Description
Ancient Palestinian & Babylonian legal thinking developed in a context of constant exposure to and challenge by the dominant Graeco-Roman and Babylonian cultures. The contributions to this volume, which is the outcome of an interdisciplinary conference held at Trinity College Dublin in March 2002, address a variety of issues in this regard. Both internal and external aspects of Jewish and non-Jewish legal texts are investigated, documentary texts are discussed alongside literary texts, and the Graeco-Roman context of Palestinian legal traditions is supplemented by the Sasanian context of Babylonian halakhah. In addition, the general legal situation in the Roman Empire at large and Roman Palestine in particular is elucidated.

Book Description
These six poignant vignettes recall Miwok Indians whom the author knew as a boy in Murphys, California, during the 1920s and 1930s. The Miwok were hunter-gatherers in the Sierra Nevada foothills when the gold rush overwhelmed them in the mid-nineteenth century. By World War I decades of violence, disease, and poverty had reduced the Miwok to 670 souls scraping by on the social and economic fringes of Anglo society. In twenty more years, Miwok culture had nearly vanished.
A few of the survivors come to life in Burrows's powerful portraits of Miwok old timers such as Mary, Walker, and Aaron who could recall the old days of Miwok autonomy and who still found strength and dignity in indigenous culture. Fading cultural memory, social alienation, and economic desperation, however, drove the younger Miwok such as The Brothers, Andy, and Dickie to destructive choices and behaviors that ultimately ruined their lives. Since World War II, the Miwok have re-established themselves as an indigenous tribe and continue to practice traditional rituals and ceremonies.
Customer Reviews:
Making History.......2003-01-10
As a member of the Miwok tribe, I probably viewed this book somewhat differently than most others. Family remembers the histories and characters from Jack Burrow's book somewhat differently than depicted. Burrows adds a bit too much color to real characters already filled with color, in order to make entertaining tall tales ala western novellas. This book demonstrates how tales of Miwoks, as told from a slanted, white outsider's viewpoint,(no matter how well intentioned), combined with local gossip, can be retold as history. Views towards the Miwok is more clearly understood, as well as the Miwoks' defensive attitudes. Albeit somber and depressing, entertaining tall tales of Indians in the Gold country.
Much More than a Historical Memoir.......2001-01-19
I grew up romanticizing the people who settled California and of the Native Americans who were forced to give up control of their own lives with the westward migration. This wonderful book turns most of my old beliefs to dust. This is a very personal and unvarnished memoir of a young boy who found himself drawn to the Miwok people living around him. He learned much from them. He learned about what survived of their culture and language, about their subdued dignity and sorrows. He shows us, in a very visual style, how they coped each day in that harsh and hostile environment of "white" Murphys. These violent, sad and poignant tales give the reader a brand new perspective on this time and place and, indeed, on the people both native and white who inhabited the Sierra foothills in the 20's, 30's and 40's.
An evocation of memory.......2001-01-17
Jack Burrows, previously known for his groundbreaking study, "John Ringo, the Gunfighter Who Never Was," the first book to use modern historical methodology to separate legend from fact in examining the Tombstone story, has used a different approach in this small but wonderful book. Burrows has taken it upon himself to preserve the memory of the virtually extinct Miwok Indians, possessors of a unique culture largely destroyed by disease and environmental degradation, a people with whom he grew up in northern California. But this time historian Burrows has, properly, chosen to tell his story by approximating oral tradition. He writes about his memories of a handful of surviving Miwok recalled from his own pre-World War II childhood, memories he feels the responsibility and the destiny to pass along to history.
Burrows writes beautifully about the humanity of individual Miwok, a humanity that runs the gamut of human behavior, oft-times loving, sometimes glorious, occasionally comic, and still at other times violent and self-destructive. He narrates the ultimately tragic stories of these mostly gentle Miwok colorfully and effectively, yet without sentimentality, and for this his story is all the more poignant. As Burrows preserves their memory, individual Miwok, despite alienation, depression, and degradation on a daily basis both random and systematic, have an inner dignity that will be hard for the reader to forget.
