This is a great text about understanding media in all its forms. The reading was little complicated but when Dr. Baran explained what it all meant, I became more involved in media ranging from print to the internet. If you want to understand the media and how business, such as advertising, uses this it's a real eye opener. Read this book! It'll make you think about how our world is working right now.

Could Have Been Better.......1999-12-19

It may seem odd reviewing a flip book, but I expect a better quality product to come with Pixar. The first side has the record player scene from the cover. The horse is all but jammed inside the binding of the book. The whole scene should have been moved over to the right more. Secondly, they use the motion blur effect on the characters. While this may work on the large screen, it's irritating in a flip book. I would much rather have seen the characters sharply on every page. Finally they could have chosen a better scene for the second side then the Rex/Slinky Dog segment. Like their previous Bug's Life flip book of Dot running toward the camera, there are better scenes in Toy Story 2 to draw from that illustrate the magic and appeal of CGI. The Rex scene in the book is stiff.

Good book, not as comprehensive as Barron's Handbook.......2004-06-28

Diane Grindol has written another useful and interesting book for the bird owner's library - THE CANARY. This little book is a good basic volume with diet, grooming and other health care tips including a section on various ailments such as mites, cysts, and canary pox. In various sidebar sections Grindol includes a recipe for pellet muffins, the benefits of formulated diets and and how to turn seeds into nutritious treats by sprouting them. Her sections on cages and cage supplies, as well as perch choices are probably cover some of the most important aspects of canary ownership. Apparently, canaries can become ill if they sit on the same sized perches all day.

I did not find this book any more useful than the Barron's handbooks on canaries although it does include a few different features. My book is a hardback and will probably last longer than the books with paper covers. This book includes many charming photos as do the other books I purchased - however, two of them show a canary with a Siamese cat, which made me wonder about the advisability of letting a cat so near a canary, even for a photo op. The book includes a description of the most common canary, the `German Roller' which apparently has the most beautiful song. A useful feature of this book is the list of Internet sites you can visit if you really want to investigate canaries in detail.

This is a great book for any canary lover. Before I read this book I did not know much about this animal other than seeing him getting chased by Sylvester. Diane writes wonderfully, you will be through with the book before you know it! Clearly an expert in the field, her love for these birds is obvious as you read this book. Whether you own a canary now, or are just thinking about getting one, you must get this book!

The french seem to know how to enjoy life. They have even created their kitchen gardens as works of art. I looked long to find a good book on potagers with pictures of real french gardens after reading "Four-Season Harvest" by E. Coleman. And here they are!

More of a coffee table book of beautiful photos of gardens then a how to/design book. But still full of great ideas that will get you motivated and reworking your garden immediately.

These gardens are very functional and very lovely. Not as structured as others, which I rather liked.

Great value for the price...........2003-03-23

At first glance you might think IN THE FRENCH KITCHEN GARDEN is nothing more than a good door prize. This pretty little book is not very expensive and whereas cheap and beautiful often suggests a void, FKG is packed with all sorts of good ideas for creating your own little kitchen garden. From Ms. Brennan's perspective, the French kitchen garden is a soup garden or potager where one grows vegetables, herbs, strawberries, melons and "cutting flowers, such as zinnias and nasturtiums." She also suggests that although the proper garden would not include trees which shade vegetable plants and flowers and reduce production, occasionally, one includes a fig tree or some other small fruit tree. Generally, the produce grown in the potager is consumed as the season progresses (soup to soup so to speak) with nothing leftover for canning or preserving although some items such as winter squash and potatoes might be stored in a cool dry place for a short while.

The concept of a year-round garden is European, and therefore a foreign idea for most Americans whose only spring crop consists of daffodils. So among other contributions, Brennan encourages the reader/gardener and/or novice potager to think differently about the use of space heretofore only used to grow a few tomato plants and pole beans. I have been a 3 season flower gardener most of my life (spring-summer-fall) but in recent years have attempted to have a good-looking winter garden. My winter "crop" has been more structural than not, consisting of dried grasses, dried sedum and other "interesting" plant forms that are decaying and bird friendly. Ms Brennan has inspired me to rethink my approach and seek out more information about four-season vegetable gardening. Winter for example is a great time to plant onion sets and grow leafy items in a cold frame. If you're thinking about growing the old-style Victory Garden, or want to know more about the soup garden, Brennan's book is a good place to begin.

Great Illustrtations & Explanations.......2002-01-13

My wonderful husband just bought this for me for my birthday and my thumbs are glowing green. (Oh, to be an Alaskan and have a gardening book bestowed up on me in the dead of winter!) The author explains many ideas for gardening in great detail, often explaining what could happen if you do things different ways (for instance, what happens when radishes are grown in hot soil in warm climates vs. in cooler ones.) The illustrations are also efficient in that they are in water colour and show detail where needed and show adequate lay-out.

A delightful read, and some sound advice.......1999-04-24

If you are lucky enough to ever meet Gerogeanne Brennan, you know that she is the real thing: down to earth, a gourmand who gardens. You can trust that Brennan speaks from her experience, not from the experience of her "experts."

In this book Brennan does something unusal that you do not usually find in gardening books, especially ones that are geared for begining gardeners. There are no lists of 10 fool proof plants, nor strict instructions to plant something a specific way on an absolute date or face certain failure. (Honestly, why Martha thinks you have to plant peas on St. Patrick's Day is beyond me.) Brennan instead wants you to understand the philosophy of the potager, and then make your own rules.

Brennan suggests what you might want to plant in each of the four seasons (wherever you happen to live) and tells you what typically would be planted in a true French potager at the same season; Brennan gives you sources to find these plants; Brennan even gives you an idea of what size pot you would need if you are restricted to balconey gardening. Very thoughtful. Though I have not tried any of the recipes in this book, they are similar to others you can find in her well-received cook books.

The book itself is small and well made; the paper is heavy. It feels good in your hand. The illustrations are charming without being too cute, and often they illustrate a garden layout that actually makes sense. And of course Brennan's writing is rich and clear.

I liked the book as far as the writing goes, but the plot was limited. In a nutshell it was ONLY about cheating! I was expecting more of Waiting to Exhale meets the church. I just wished the book had given me more subjects to read about instead of cheating...that's not the only drama-filled topic. Reality has enough of that as is!

Too Much Profanity.......2007-09-06

As a rule of thumb, I read good Christian fiction and very clean romance stories. I purchased this book thinking that it was on the clean side. Sad to say it is filthy and I cannot read it...What a disappointment, in order to express oneself why do we have to use 4 letter words. I gave this book to one of my co--workers. Please be aware this book contains a lot of profanity. Can I get a refund?

Always something going on..........2007-08-14

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that there were so many different characters with different but similar stories going on. There was one couple's story that I felt was unnecessary but it didn't drag on too much where I was bored with it. I recommend this book and I hope there will be a sequel.

A memoir reflecting on life after a near tragic accident. Delbert was consumed by fire and in a teen dance hall. After years of therapy and inconprehensible pain, he emerged as a better family man with a sucessful business and consequently sending his two daugthers through college.

An inspiring story..........2004-01-13

Delbert McCoy had it all--19 years old, married, two daughters, working two jobs at the auto plants--and life was grand.

Suddenly, in one night, 35 years ago, it all was ruined. Delbert was trapped at the bottom of a staircase at a dance hall when two disgruntled young men who had been refused admittance to the club threw a can of gasoline into the stairwell, and started a fire that burned over 90% of Delbert's body. This book is an inspiring story of his determination to live (after 108 surgeries, with more to come), and return to making a life of his own.

Delbert's story is told as if it was done as an interview--like he was talking to you across the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. This creates some repetition (and an editor could have been used at times to clean up some of the spelling and punctuation errors), but the story is so powerful that those things aren't irritating.

Anyone who is discouraged with life ought to read this book--it's inspirational, courageous, and full of hope.

Remembering my past.......2003-09-29

Thank you Dr. Holmes and Dr. Lester for this exciting, informative and historical book. I was raised in the South (LA) and experienced many of the conditions described in Fire in My Soul. Remembering my blessings on this journey, I give thanks for all of my past experiences. My parents attempted to sheild me from many of the conditions of the south and in turn I was shielded from much of the history of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's except for limited TV coverage. Fire in My Soul serves as a personal history lesson for me and is one that I will read more than once. Reading about the personal experiences and the 'inner' workings of the local, state and federal agencies that Dr. Holmes was/is a part of reminded me of many personal experiences in the private sector. Reading Fire in My Soul remeinded me that the absence of compassion for another person is not isolated to any specific location or sector of the nation. Reading the story of one who continues to live her passion for justice offers the encouragement to do what I can where I am for justice.

In Fire in My Soul, Dr. Lester accomplishes a rare feat for a biographer. While she avoids the trap of painting too pretty or too perfect a picture of her subject, including a number of descriptions that are less than flattering, she is at the same time able to clearly allow her respect and admiration for this remarkable woman to come through.
The effect is that we see a real life heroine, warts and all, and we find her all the more admirable for this.
This is an important book, and I look forward to Dr. Lester's next effort.

Joan Steinau Lester and Eleanor Holmes Norton met as college classmates at Antioch College in 1958. They became friends and marched together in civil rights marches in New England. Now forty-five years later, Ms. Steinau Lester, now a journalist/writer reunites with Congresswoman Holmes Norton in writing her biography in Fire In My Soul.

Congresswoman Holmes Norton's great grandfather, Richard John Holmes, escaped from Virginia into Washington D.C. to become a free man and elude his former owner. He eventually became one of the few black firemen in the nation's capital and persevered to become a sergeant in the department. He felt a black man was worthy of equal opportunity and it is no surprise she inherited some of her great grandfather's fire for justice. With a legacy such as this, having descended from a strong, middle-class background, it is little wonder that she pursued a career in law that would one day put her in the limelight.

Already involved in civil rights activities, the Congresswoman, while a Yale Law School student, went to Mississippi in June 1963 to join the voter registration drive as a SNCC member. Twenty-four hours later Medgar Evers was dead, victim of an assassination and Holmes Norton had to make quick decisions concerning other members who were being falsely arrested. After law school, she obtained a clerkship with Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., the first black district court judge, in Philadelphia. She then met her future husband, Edward Norton, also an attorney, a man who was secure enough to not be threatened by her status or activities.

Holmes Norton's status did indeed rise as she ventured further into her profession as an attorney, became more involved with civil and human rights, and eventually going into politics. Her life was not always smooth. Her daughter, Katherine, was born with Down's Syndrome; however, she resisted health specialists advice to institutionalize her when she got older. She was very devoted to her.

This reviewer had the opportunity of seeing the Congresswomen twice this year. She is as formidable a presence in person as she is in the media. Her stature commands respect and her sense of belief in pursuing and preserving the rights of human life comes across instantaneously. She is a cheerleader for the people of Washington D.C., who she represents with candor and is respected by them as she respects them. This was a well-written biography of a powerful woman.

I wish there were more books like this.......2003-07-06

I don't usually read political biographies, but this one gave me the hope I was searching for in the face of the depressing political realities of today. It's inspiring to read about a fiercely intelligent woman who follows her inner moral compass while compromising when necessary to get things done. I wish everyone serving in Congress had to read this book. Every voter should as well!

A must read for political activists.......2003-05-22

This fascinating biography is not only a pager turner, it also an insightful discourse on how to be an agent of change. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is grappling with issues of how to change policy, whether as an "insider", "outsider", or hybrid. It is also an inspirational story of an terrific woman. I couldn't put it down.
