Customer Reviews:
Not for non-watercolor painters.......2006-03-26
Chinese brush painting is difficult if you lack enough experience with watercolor painting (I have painted with acrylics mainly). The pictures in the book are beautiful and the book is good as just a coffee table book to look at if you are a curious person and wonder how Chinese (or Japanese)painting is done.
Capturing the Spirit of Chinese Brush Painting.......2004-03-27
What a delightful treat for painters of all stages!!! Nan Rae's book is a very lively and spiritual work that draws you to her obvious passion for her art. I'm a beginning painter and have bought several brush painting books. The Ch'i of the Brush is a very dedicated book with beautiful illustrations that are easy to follow-her directions and explanations make you feel that she were giving you the lessons right in your own home!! This book gives you an exciting confidence and enthusiasm for the art that makes you want to learn all that you can do. The histories and works included are very appreciating and thorough--very interesting to read. Plus, the most beautiful part--Nan Rae's wonderful illustrations and paintings are displayed page after page and her happy spirit lifts right off of those pages!! If you could pick only one book on Chinese Brush painting, this is definitely the one to have.
Lacks the True Spirit of Chinese Painting & Culture.......2003-12-09
Being a collector of traditional and contemporary Chinese paintings for over 25 years, I am also very interested in the variety of techniques different Chinese painters use. This book covers the basics of Chinese brush painting, ideas and concepts taught for hundreds of years so there nothing new in this book. Not seeing Nan Rae's work prior to purchasing this book, I was very surprised by the mediocre level of her paintings. Her paintings have a western influence but her ability to merge the two cultures just doesn't work. For myself and other fellow collectors, her paintings in no way capture the essence of what true Chinese culture and its painting is all about. Another disappointment about her work (from this book and website) is that many of her paintings are copied (and not very well at that) from older Chinese paintings and famous artists works. If your really interested in Chinese painting techniques, find books by true Chinese painting masters such as the Chinese painting series by the Asian based publisher Art Book Co. (with English text) and not someone who paints as if it were a casual hobby. Buy this book if you're interested in "reading" about simple Chinese brush techniques but once your actually begin painting, find some reference paintings created by actual Chinese artists who capture the true spirit of Chinese painting and the culture.
A Must Have Book! A Real Treasure!.......2003-11-04
This is a book filled with beautiful art. From the helpful detailed instructions for the beginner to the inspirational techniques and compositions for the experienced artist, this is the one book you must have on oriental brush painting. I teach brush painting and every student lights up when they look through this book. This book goes to every class I teach and every student wants a copy to take home. I have many books on brush painting but this is one I will always treasure.
Exquisite Eloquence: The Art of Explaining Art.......2003-09-22
The first thing that struck me as I thumbed through this graceful publication was how visually beautiful it was. I thought perhaps I had purchased a lovely coffee table book! Ms. Rae's work is beautifully reproduced on its pages and alone is reason enough to buy this book. As I dug deeper, I have discovered the author writes as eloquently as she paints. Her explanations are clear and concise and the illustations are very helpful. But more importantly, perhaps, woven throughout the book is an underlying sense of encouragement. This author doesn't just want to show you "how-to," she wants to inspire you. And I must say, she succeeds. I also suggest checking out her website. She is a prolific and exuberant artist!

Book Description
Available November 2003 In essays with settings that range from the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, to the mountain town of Leadville, Colorado, to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, Trudy Dittmar weaves personal experience with diverse threads of subject matter to create unexpected connections between human nature and nature at large. Life stories, elegantly combined with mindful observations of animals, plants, landscape and the skies, theories in natural science, environmental considerations, and touches of art criticism and popular culture, offer insights into the linked analogies of nature and soul. A glacial pond teeming with salamanders in arrested development is cause for reflection on the limits of a life that knows only bounty. The hot blue lights of celestial phenomena are a metaphor for fast, flashy menhe loves of a lifeand a romantic career is interpreted. Watching a pronghorn buck battling for, and ultimately losing, his harem leads to a meditation on a kind of immortality.
Fauna and Flora, Earth and Sky is testimony to the bearing and consequence of nature in one life, and to the richness of understanding it can bring to all human lives.

The Opal Desert: Explorations of the American Southwest
ASIN: 0801865050 |
Book Description
An ardent early suffragette, Edna Brush Perkins set out in 1920 with her friend, Charlotte Hannahs Jordan, to journey into the Mojave, both women seeking to escape civilization and their struggle to secure voting rights for women. The Mojave at that time was considered to be a desolate, inaccessible region--part of the fading American frontier. Originally published in 1922, The White Heart of Mojave is Perkins' account of this journey.
Perkins' evocative writing describes the landscape and the people she encounters. As editor Peter Wild writes, this is ultimately the story of two wealthy women who enter Death Valley "as a sort of middle-aged lark" and "emerge from the trip profoundly changed."
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Tale of Old Death Valley.......2004-05-07
The White Heart of Mojave is an old classic of desert literature, recently brought back into print as part of the American Land Classics series. Centered around an adventurous trip through Death Valley by two women in the 1920s, it gives a fascinating glimpse into the region and some of its eccentric inhabitants before it became a National Park and popular tourist destination. The book was written at a time when real American wilderness was beginning to disappear, and the deserts were first coming to be appreciated for their remoteness and solitude and austere beauty, rather than as simply wastelands to be exploited for mineral resources. Edna Brush Perkins, along with a few other desert pioneers like Mary Austen and John Van Dyke, was among the first to contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of the great American deserts. Aside from its historical significance, though, the book is well written and is sure to be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in this harsh but fascinating region.

Book Description
Here is a complete training program designed to help the aspiring sword fighter become proficient with his weapon of choice and truly dangerous to an adversary. Covers mental conditioning, air-cutting drills, slow-motion and exaggerated-range-of-motion practice, extra-heavy sword drills, isometric and resistance training, point-sensitivity drills, aggressiveness and power training, speed and accuracy drills and more.
Customer Reviews:
pretty good.......2005-07-07
Give this guy a break. I bought the book and I like it. The illustrations are a hoot. OK so he doesnt seem to be playing with a full deck when he seems to think that the sword is a legit weapon for self defense (not in my county they arent). But the exercises are for real. Definitely good exercise for a swordsman or martial 'artist'.
Disappointing.......2004-01-07
FIne as an additional training tool but no real substance- yes it tellls you how to practise slow motion drills but not how 2 actually put it into parctise. I wanted to no how to defend myslef, not how meditation could help my fighting. And you expect a 12 year old kid to carry around a bloody sword cane!
Disappointing. Just disappointing
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!.......2000-11-04
This book is down right awful. The drawings in it could have been done by a 5 year old, and from what little I forced myself to read I've determined that the writing is somewhere around the 10'th grade level.. What is really bad about this book, is that after laying out a disclaimer that the author and publisher aren't responsible for your injury, you are told about a dozen different ways to very likely kill yourself. I am not kidding. The techniques in this book are extremely dangerous, and the pictures are misleading.
Please do not buy this book. You will learn nothing you can't glean from watching a highlander movie or even 1 episode of the series. Literally. A total waste of money, and I am ashamed to have bought this utter garbage.
Don't waste the money.......2000-06-03
Everything in this book is so basic, I might have gleaned useful information from it back in third grade. You could learn more from watching "The Highlander", or an Errol Flynn movie.
a very good training tool.......1998-11-27
This is a great book on training techniques, not only for the sword, but as well ( with a little bit of adaptation ) for the knife, stick, or any weapon user.
Book Description
Discover the stylistic techniques behind influential speeches!
- Design speeches so that listeners anticipate key words
- Depart from the common idiom by using "rhetorical shorthand"
- Create credibility without a publicity advantage
Under the influence of the media, it is easy to forget the tremendous impact of the speaker on an audience. Today's media enables speakers who once addressed hundreds in auditoriums to increase their public to millions through television. Dr. Carpenter's relevant research and careful scholarship about how to pick the best words and arrange them in the best orders will help the speaker become a stylist and slogan-maker whose sentences may become sound bites on the evening news or quoted in newspaper accounts the day after the speech has been made. This book prepares speakers to potentially change one little corner of the world - and perhaps the world itself -- through powerful words.
Ronald H. Carpenter Ph.D. is Professor of English and Communication Studies at the University of Florida. A prolific and prize-winning scholar in rhetorical theory and the history of American public address, he is the author of the History As Rhetoric, other books on rhetoric of Douglas MacArthur, Father Charles E. Coughlin, and Frederic Jackson Turner, and numerous journal articles about the language of political discourse. Dr. Carpenter conducts his "Write Well - Write Now" training program for corporate executives, business groups, lawyers and judges, public relations professionals, incoming classes of officers at the U.S. Naval War College, and other people whose success and leadership depend upon persuasive communication.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2006-02-22
This is a great book. I purchased this book for Dr. Carpeneter's class at the University of Florida and I can attest that he knows his material. Whether you're using this book for simple toasts, business meetings, or public addresses, it will most certainly sharpen the stylistic content of your message.
Generally Disappointed.......2002-11-11
Dry and overly technical. As an aspiring lawyer and an armchair orator, I didn't find very much that I could readily apply to the nuts and bolts of my speech writing or delivery.
My Ears Are In Ecstasy........2000-09-26
Great Wine makers provide pleasure to the palate, but my ears are in ecstasy thanks to Carpenter. If you are like me I did not understand antitheses, metaphors, point and counterpoint. I just enjoyed these techniques in a great speaker. Now I know how to add these great tools to my speeches and communications. This book opened up areas of speech writing I did not know existed. Having written thousands of pages of business reports I can't go back and do it over, but within hours I was applying these excellent new tools.
Book Description
For people who want to start drawing manga, this book gives a good overall picture of what it requires. First, one learns what drawing tools are needed, then how to use them, how to draw characters, and fill in the tones. From there, one learns how to make it all look manga-like, and how to handle backgrounds. It's all here in this single volume.

Book Description
This fascinating text presents what is probably the largest selection of antique lamps illustrated anywhere—647 in all. Included are "Betty" lamps; petticoat and tumbler lamps; pierced tin lanterns; candle lanterns; Sandwich glass candlesticks; mantle and astral lamps; luster lamps, Bennington ware; chandeliers and other lighting devices in use up to the 1880’s. Introduction.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to Follow.......2000-08-22
The author gave many cutesy anecdotal examples of how lighting related to ordinary life in the 18th and 19th century, but his approach was so scattershot that the book became very hard to follow. e.g.(you might be reading on page 100 of the book and the author would refer back to a photo plate on page 10 and then to another photo on page 137). The writing is not structured along a logically progressive timeline as most people are used to following in modern research texts. Also the photgraphic plates yield photos of lamps and candlesticks which are quite small with difficult to determine details, due to the large number of items displyed in each plate. The plates are in black and white and the paper is not the best quality for photographic reproduction.
However, on a more positive note, the anecdotes were a refreshing change from an otherwise boring treatise. I wouldn't recommend this as your first or only choice for scholarly study of the field, but as an adjunct to other texts and for some interesting background material it is fine.

Love this book!!.......2007-09-11
I have so many landscaping books that I never opened again after the first week I bought them. This is not one of those books. It's by far so much better than most of the other ones out there. It's well organized for info, and the plans are numerous and easy to follow. Not just for beginners. a really great book!
Curb appeal made easy.......2007-08-31
It's great the way these books are customized for each individual climate area here in the U.S. Saves a lot of wasted planning with the wrong plants and materials.
One of my favorites.......2006-05-19
I recently became interested in gardening (now that I have a yard in which I can plant). This is one of my favorite books on gardening and landscaping. Great resource for those of us living in the northeast. Full of wonderful photos, explanations and illustrations. It gives many ideas for addressing certain areas of your yard (i.e. front entryway, patio, rock wall). Explanations are excellent; I learned a great deal from this book. Very well written. Highly recommended.
Have my own and now purchasing for a neighbor!!.......2005-07-15
A neighbor showed me her copy and I had to get one for myself. Great layouts, great plant selections, this book offers great ideas and variations and is FULL of information! I showed another neighbor the garden I am planning and now I'm buying her a copy as well. We are going to have a GREAT looking street!!
This book is wonderful .......2005-05-26
Home Landscaping: Northeast Region is a very informative book filled with beautiful photos. I don't think I will need another book while doing our landscape planning. Landscaping designs, expected sizes of plants and trees and shrubs, different colors and species, how to's, this book will cover all your landscaping needs if you live in new england.
