Want to learn how to play basketball or just improve on your skills now? Then pick-up a copy of Oscar Robertson's, "The Art of Basketball." Everything you need to begin playing basketball or being able to push your current skills to the next level of competition is in here. Oscar takes you from physical and mental conditioning to all of the skills necessary to play the game. Shooting, passing, rebounding, offensive and defensive tactics even a section on what to do when you are mismatched in a game. The book is excellent for coaches to use as a teaching manual and to recommend to their team as a guide for practicing on their own. Oscar mentions in the book that the best way to improve is to work on the fundamentals and he shows you how even if you have never touched a basketball. You can't go wrong learning from a true master of the game, and if you have any doubts just check out Oscar's stats in the back of the book.

Every basketball camp for youth and adults, should provide........1999-02-23

The" Art of Basketball" by Oscar Robertson, and"They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, are the two books all basketball students, players, and coaches should have. The" Art of Basketball" provides detailed explanations with photos, of fundamental techniques all players need to master. It is fantastic, the player who averaged triple double statistics over multiple NBA seasons, has documented his fundamentals for others to learn. I found Mr. Robertson's comments concerning the mental aspects of the game, such as developing confidence, to be particularly insightful. At its current price, this book is the best value for instructional basketball books, that is available today.

Oscar Robertson's new book is a great coaching tool........1998-12-08

I highly recommend this book as a coaching tool. I found it to be very helpful in teaching young athletes the game of basketball. I especially like the way Oscar keeps fundamentals of basketball as the emphasis of this book. The review at the end of each chapter is very helpful along with the suggested workout programs. I had each girl on my team buy one and we have them read a chapter a week. At our practices we review what they read then we incorporate Oscar's program into our coaching program. I highly recommend this book to anyone who coaches youth basketball...it's a great tool. Every kid who plays basketball or who wants to improve their game should have a copy of this.

Okay, but there are better, more reasonably-priced alternatives.......2007-06-28

This is a comprehensive treatment of Arabic grammar that suffers from (1) extremely strange organization (important, common topics are discussed after much more obscure ones have been treated) and (2) a price that seems, to me, to be too high for what you get. Additionally, there are many typographical errors.

However, the reviewer who critiques this book based on what he thinks he learned in first-year Arabic is misinformed. The Arabic verb system is commonly described as "perfect" and "imperfect," rather than "past" and "present," by many Arabic grammarians; this isn't a quirk of Schulz's, much less something Schulz does just to be difficult! Additionally, the "anaa, anta, anti" order of presenting verbs is not the way verbs are traditionally presented in the Arabic world - this order was borrowed from the traditional way of teaching European languages, and although many English-language Arabic texts use it, there's nothing particularly odd about using the Arabic system instead.

Finally, the vowel marks the other reviewer thinks are "extra" or "added" are perfectly standard in formal Arabic. (They're not normally spoken aloud, and as a result many introductory Arabic classes omit them ... but they're certainly not wrong!)

A little too complicated for the beginner.......2005-12-15

Schulz's book is too complicated for a beginner; I would recommend it only for the advanced or intermediate student of Arabic. I don't like that it calls the past and present tenses "perfect and imperfect" (why not just call them past and present???) just to confuse you. To add insult to injury, the charts of verbs are different than those I learned in school. Instead of being arranged: ana, anta, anti, huwa, heya; nahnu, antum, antunna, hum, hunn...the pronouns in the verb charts are just arranged any old way. Plus, this book doesn't even cover in depth something very important: the Masdar! I think, though I'm not sure because I'm not an advanced scholar, that there are "added" extra marks above some of the letters, like the spelling is slightly different than what I have learned. Like a double dumma at the end of a word, or a kasra under a ta-marbuta for no apparent reason.

Ok, that said it certainly is very thorough, and probably appropriate for the advanced student who already knows what it is talking about. It is just not what a beginning or intermediate student needs as a reference grammar to have at his side to correct his homework or whatever, or look something up. I do not think it gives enough examples, nor does it clearly explain what it is demonstrating. This is clearly an advanced book; not something I would want to fool around with (I'm just ending Arabic 102).

The best handbook ever for trainers!.......1998-03-19

Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The only book on the subject, and a good one........1999-10-24

How many times have you seen one of those big old French marble clocks for sale at auction or in a shop? Were you intrigued by the craftsmanship, curious about the history, or just impressed by the size? Wonder no more, now that Nicolas Thorpe has written this useful guide to these relics of a past age.

These clocks were made during the 1830 to 1930 period, and they fall into my definition of an investment antique. They were expensive when new, still useful, and won't be made again. Yet they seem undervalued in the market. Thorpe discusses the aesthetic, historical, and practical aspects of these behemoths. Much of the book is a simple, practical course in cleaning and restoring these cases and movements. It is directed at the LAYMAN, not the expert. If you have never repaired a clock, if you are reasonably handy you can follow Thorpe's directions and do it right.

Even if you only own one French marble clock, you should have this book. Whether it's a petite boudoir timepiece or a fireplace mantel juggernaut, your understanding and enjoyment will be enhanced by this book.

INVALUABLE REFERENCE GUIDE!.......2005-09-26

This is an absolutely invaluable reference guide for the Michigan gardener. It gives lots of suggestions of the different perennials that thrive in Michigan and has LOTS of pictures to show you what type of plant you're looking at. I use it very frequently.

Excellent, well-written, well-organized guide.......2004-07-08

I don't believe I've ever seen a gardening book where the information was as well-organized as it is in "Perennials for Michigan." Often books of regional interest are thrown together and published on the cheap, but this book is tightly-bound, full of color illustrations, and above all, well written. And it's really about Michigan climate and Michigan soils. Someone didn't just go through and change, say 'Iowa' to 'Michigan' with a word processor, then rename the book.

The authors make a point of informing the reader which perennials are native to Michigan--another bonus. The best varieties for a particular garden are also described, e.g. the 'Gardenview Scarlet' variety of Bergamot resists powdery mildew more effectively than some of its relatives.

The book begins with a pictorial guide called "The Flowers at a Glance" where photographs of the perennials are listed in alphabetical order, by common name. There is a no-nonsense introduction to suitable perennials for the Michigan climate and its USDA hardiness zones. The zone map is more detailed than usual, which is useful for me because I've lived in my new location for less than a year, and the map tells me I need to select perennials that will survive at -20 F. In my former location, temperatures rarely dropped below -5 F.

The next few sections explain how to start, maintain, and propagate a perennial garden. The authors detail which plants can be started from stem, root, and basal cuttings and which can be started from rhizomes. There is the obligatory chapter on 'Problems & Pests' before we plunge into the heart of this book: the alphabetically-arranged sections on each of the 681 selected perennials.

Each species is described, including origin and bloom time, and whether (thank you! thank you!) deer find it hard to digest. Each has subsections on 'Planting' (how and when to start your plants), 'Growing,' 'Tips,' 'Recommended' varieties, and 'Problems and Pests.' Colored photographs, usually labeled by variety, accompany the descriptions of each perennial.

Lone Pine Publishing, you've put together an excellent, well-organized book for Michigan gardeners (even if you are located in Edmonton, Canada). I'm going to order copies for my sister and all my friends who garden in this state. Highly recommended!

George Washington Carver (c. 1864 - January 5, 1943) was an American botanical researcher and agronomy educator who worked in agricultural extension at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, teaching former slaves farming techniques for self-sufficiency.

This biography is an incredibly easy to read book and an excellent portrait of perhaps America's most significant botanist and agricultural scientist. His story of perseverence and faith, while confronting the racial bigotry of his time, is truly inspiring. If all you know about George Washington Carver is that he invented peanut butter then you need to read this book!

This summer I read. The incredible inspiring novel called George Washington Carver, a biography written by Sam Wellman .The book was about George Washington Carver an inventor and educator. This book showed that George Washington Carver's life was very tough back in the 1870's.The book let's you see life back then, but not just anyone's life a person's life that anyone in some way can relate to.

One non-stop turning point thought out this book was that George Washington Carver being on his own and growing up all by himself .One of most the interesting things in this book was the passage "Born the Son of Slaves, he would work with Gods Help to free the South". That was a remarkable description of what George Washington Carver meant to some people, because he believed so much in God and so did everybody else and also because he did every thing he could for the south. Thougthout the book it was very easy for me to keep track of the main character because the book was a biography. A book about someone's life. In the whole book I can really say, "It felt like George Washington Carver really played his role in history''. (1871 - 1943)

I would recommend this book to any person looking for an exciting book,. The type of reader for this book would be a person who likes to read about other peoples history or life story, a person who can put their self in a place like George Washington Carver's and understand his point of view, or someone who is willing, and has faith in God should read this wonderful book. I liked this book a lot. And I also enjoyed it because of the fact that the author of the book wrote many other titles.
