Book Description
The '25, '61, '78, '79, and '92 national championships, the first game under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, and twelve more power-packed memorable moments make up the legend of Alabama Football. Eli Gold brings these memories to life with the same clarity and fervor that fans have come to love as they listen to football on the radio.
Featured are legendary Alabama players and coaches including Joe Namath, Johnny Musso, Kenny Stabler, Gene Stallings, Harry Gilmer, Don Hutson, and other names that are still part of everyday conversation in Alabama, regardless of when they attended the university. So much of what was great at Alabama is because of the leadership and influence of Bear Bryant, and his story is told as well as his part in the story of every one of these important moments.
Set roughly in chronological order with photographs throughout, Crimson Nation is a journey back through time that every true Alabama fan must own.
Customer Reviews:
An Easy-Read book on the Crimson Tide.......2007-01-18
As a life-long Alabama fan, I was excited to read Eli Gold's new book on the Crimson Tide. Written in typical Eli Gold style, the book was an easy read that makes you feel you're sitting around a table with other Bama fans talking about and reliving the great moments in Alabma football history. The chapters on former UA President George H. Denny, Wallace Wade, Harry Gilmer, Don Hutson and Frank Thomas were really good and informative, but the stories in the chapters on Joe Namath, Pat Trammell, Kenny Stabler, etc. really offered no new insights and would be well-known by old-timers like myself. Overall, it is still a good book and would make a great read for any Alabama fan
Nice overview of Bama history by the Voice of the Tide.......2006-11-03
When Eli Gold took over as the play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide radio broadcasts, I was initially put off by his high-pitched voice. After decades of classical callers like John Forney, Paul Kennedy, and Doug Layton, Gold sounded downright shrill. But he has grown on me over time - and his voice sure cuts through the din of a crowd!
Eli has had sports connections within the state for years and it certainly shows in this volume. There are anecdotes to spare. Honestly, many of the stories are well-worn to old-timers like me. But if you're a relative newcomer, if you're making your first Tide-related book purchase, or if you grew up in the 1960s and '70s and simply love to relive the days of perfection (sigh), you can't go wrong with this one.
Warm and insightful ... a great read for any sports fan .......2006-08-30
Eli Gold, the voice of NASCAR and University of Alabama football, came to radio via his humble roots in Brooklyn, NY. How he did, and how he became such an integral part of the Alabama family, are an interesting sidebar to a larger story that Gold weaves--a rich tapestry of football, culture, and camraderie.
Gold has done his homework, but this book doesn't get bogged down in the arcane. It's simply a warm, broad overview of Alabama football history, including some of the key coaches, players, games, characters, broadcasters, locations and moments that make Alabama football such a national treasure.
One of the strengths of the book is that Gold writes like he talks--you can really "hear" him as you read, which is a good thing, given that Gold is one of our nation's finest sportscasters. He is also gracious, and goes out of his way to honor his colleagues and predecessors in the broadcast booth. His descriptions are colorful and accurate...and always interesting.
This is an excellent book; a must for any Alabama fan, but also enjoyable for fans of sports everywhere.
Good Book On Alabama Football.......2006-07-17
If you are a big alabama fan like I am then you will like this book. It is simple and well written and gives a brief and short history of some of the teams. It majors on the late great "Bear" but over-all is a very enjoyable book. Michael Beck- Florence, Alabama
Customer Reviews:
History that's great reading, and interesting .......2006-07-04
This captures the sense of "being there", and pulls the reader into Appalachia history, like reading a good novel.
Concisely edited for maximum impact, without loss of content.(a fine balancing act by the editors, that took over a decade to compile!)
This is so engaging, tha I have bought several as gifts.
Outstanding documentation, and great storytelling abound.
Reference, coffetable, and personal library uses are a must.
Exciting Overview of Appalachian Culture, Music, Literature & Religion.......2006-06-21
As a undergrad who is finishing up my studies in History with a minor in Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State-I will go on and get my master's in Appalachian & Bluegrass studies .
This is a well-written resource that is full of any information of the Appalachia's. From literature, religion, mountain music, conservation, culture, movies, Foxfire,-more than you can digest in one reading.
The author breaks each catagory down in sections that deal with a specific topic. This is a must for your library. This is a thick volume that should have been broken down into 4 volumes. the book is very bulky and heavy. I guess all the education and reading does weigh a lot!
Excellent Pair: Two Books That Change The Way We See Appalachia.......2006-05-15
Like Amazon's pairing, and featured on National Public Radio, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia and The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America, are two excellent and landmark books in understanding the history, cultures and social importance of the Southern Mountains to our country. The Encyclopedia is divided into several sections: land, people, economy, culture, and institutions (such as schools, media). Like any encyclopedia, the entries are short but concise, and provide just enough information to inform but not bore you and give a long list of resources for more scholarship. The experts and authors that contributed to the book come from colleges around the South and nation. Just leafing through this opus is rewarding. The richness and diversity of the region come through in every section. The United States of Appalachia is similar in its theme -- that Appalachia has been overlooked and undervalued -- but it provides more in-depth and inspiring portraits of Appalachian Americans who have been on the cutting edge of American innovations and social movements. It is divided into several parts: music, American Revolution, abolitionist movement, labor movements, literature, civil rights movement, and the environment.
Both of the these books are indispensable and highly recommended for all readers interested in history and life from one of our country's most misunderstood regions.
The Reference for the Region.......2006-03-25
I was priviledged to be at the Appalachian Studies conference where this mammoth work was unveiled, and it achieves it's purpose: it is a tremenous reference for all things Appalachian. I first knew about the encyclopedia when my father was contacted a few years ago to author a few articles for inclusion in the agriculture section. The editors have worked hard to find the most qualified people to write in every section- my dad grew up in Buchanan County, Virginia on a sustenance farm, and is now an agronomist who works for the University of Kentucky. Every contributor is this qualified!
One note: if you are looking for an "introduction" to the Appalachian Region, this is not it. This is more of a reference, reading this cover to cover would be somewhat comparable to reading the dictionary through, I would imagine. If you want an introduction, go for "A Handbook to Appalachia", by University of Tennessee Press, or, for a less scholarly but quite interesting take, the Foxfire series.
When I got my copy of the Encyclopedia, I was very impressed. I can't wait until I have time to sit down with it for a long while and simply browse through its pages and see how many new things I learn. As an undergraduate researcher in Appalachian Religion, I look forward especially to reading the religion section as edited by Howard Dorgan (whom I luckily had the chance to meet at the conference), the premier authority on religion in Appalachia.
For all scholars of Appalachia, this reference is invaluable.
Comprehensive.......2006-03-15
Comprehensive tome on every aspect of life in the Appalachian region. Some 1800 pages, 30 sections. 170 articles on music alone. Appalachia is not your grandfather's mountain anymore!
If you thought the hills were about hoedowns and yee-haws, this volume will make you think again. Consider, for example, that just in the musical sphere, Jimmy Blanton, Bessie Smith, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, and Edgar Meyer were all born and raised in Appalachia.
Book Description
Moving beyond racial designations of "black," "white," and "Indian," this volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture complicates and enriches our understanding of "southernness" by demonstrating the extent to which it exists as a fabric of many cultures. This exploration of southern ethnicities examines the ways people "perform" their cultural identities through, among other things, dress, dance, and family tradition. Contributors identify 88 major ethnic groups that have lived in the South from the Mississippian Period (1000-1600 C.E.) to the present.

Customer Reviews:
Not much to look at.......2007-09-13
I found that that designd in the book were all very similiar and not much in the way of sparking any creativity. Don't bother with this one since there are much better ones out there. Go with "4000 Flower and Plant Motifs"
Useful if..........2007-07-24
This book has a lot of designs of more or less the same style (like that you see on the cover.) If you're into leather tooling, embroidery, or rugmaking, you might like this book, as that's what these images remind me of. The book does mention that they're all from the same antique source, so while there are a lot of very nice designs, there isn't a lot of variety. If the style of the images on the book's cover don't appeal to you, then I wouldn't recommend buying this book, because that's the one and only style of image this book contains.
Just as I thought it would be..........2007-05-11
I am a freelance artist and was looking for a good source of stylized florals/paisleys for some drawings that I wanted to do...this book fits the bill perfectly! The designs are full of detail and the book carries enough variety to supply my needs for a very long time.
With the added use of my own imagination, I can see myself happily referring to it for when ever my needs cross over into this type of theme. The only way to make it better would be to make it hold even more than it already does...
Well done!
Dover does it again.......2006-11-05
Another excellent book from Dover. Unlike many design books, this book has many variations on stylized flower designs.
Interesting starting point for floral graphics.......2001-07-31
The graphics are crisp and very reproduceable. The majority of the flowers are a little dated, but easily altered. There is a wide variety of different motiffs from traditional colonial to Indian in orientation.
Book Description
Here in words and color illustrations are clear and humane methods for breaking annoying and destructive canine habits, and teaching the family dog lessons it will always remember. The author describes how dogs learn, then emphasizing humane treatment of animals, he explains how to control a dominant dog . . . how to make a dog respond when it is called . . . how to stop excessive barking . . . how to end destruction of furniture and garbage picking . . . how to deal with the dog who steals food . . . how to paper-train and house-train even the most difficult dog, and much more. The book is filled with more than 350 color, time-sequence photos that demonstrate training methods step by step.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2005-02-24
This book cured my dog of moderate Separation Anxiety. I would highly recommend it. The chapters are organized according to the kind of problem, so you can find what you're looking for fast. The directions given are concise and easy to follow. Finally there are tons of pictures to help you along.
The best dog training book I have ever read!.......2004-01-01
After adopting an out of control dog a couple of months ago, I have purchased many books on training. Most books say the same things, how to train basic commands. That would be easy if the dog would listen to you in the first place, but many dogs have behavior problems that make training impossible. Every chapter in this book was VERY helpful and informative. I would HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone who is at their wits end with their dog. My dog behaves much better now and I am able to have guests come to my home again.

Healt-felt words and pictures for the Schulz Collector........2002-05-07
Wonderful and warm. Shows the heart and soul of Peanuts collecting. It's not just a price guide, it's a friend.
Peanuts Collectibles Book.......2001-07-16
This book was an big disappointment, and not as advertised. It only contains an small amount of information on Peanuts Collectibles. I would not recommend it.
Extremely Helpful.......2000-03-06
If you are looking for a single book that displays a wide variety of Peanuts Memorabilia, this is the one for you. I was surprised to see almost every item I've collected over the years presented in this book. The only downside that I found was the lack of space given for plush items, and toys. Nonetheless, you will not be disappointed.
A Beautiful Guide To Peanuts Collectibles !.......1999-12-16

peanuts collectibles identification and values guide.......1999-12-04
Ten times better than the first, Andrea has put her true expertise into this perfect handbook for all the crazed fans of our favorite Beagle. So many beautiful pictures of Snoopy-Stuff. GOOD GRIEF I LOVED IT. Two enthusiastic paws up.
Book Description
Peanuts collectibles are amazingly diverse, ranging from lunch boxes, ceramic eggs, and household furnishings to skateboards and bubble bath. The book is organized by "room," with the collectibles described and depicted in chapters corresponding to rooms where they would logically be found: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and so on.
Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Book!.......2005-08-24
I'm not truly a peanuts collector per se...I don't pursue any item I can find depicting the Charles Schulz characters. But I am a big Peanuts fan and I do collect certain items such as holiday themed items and other odds and ends. There are a few other Peanuts guides out there but I think this is the best. It lists over 2000 items with over 1000 photographs. In somewhat unique fashion the author has categorized the items by the room in your home where you would find these pieces. In case that doesn't work there is a very thorough index.
The information provided is about as thorough as one could expect with the name of the maker, date, price, size, etc...In addition there is some good reference material noting other Peanuts collectors and clubs. Nicely done.
A must for every Peanuts Collector.......2005-06-14
I have been collecting Peanuts for over 15 years. This book is the first I reach for when deciding to purchase an item. The index thoroughly covers the book making it easy to get to an item right away. The book has a great coverage of Peanuts collectibles in a logically organized manner. The pictures are professionally taken and in full color. The item descriptions are helpful and concise with production dates, manufacturers, dimensions and price ranges.
Beyond being a pricing guide, this book also contains a tribute to Charles M. Schulz, an overview of how the evaluations of price were determined, collecting tips every Peanuts Collector should know, a collector's corner with photos of Peanuts Collectors' collections, Peanuts Collector's Clubs and activities, and more.
I highly recommend this book for every Peanuts Collector.
More of a love of self, vs a love of Peanuts collecting........2002-05-07
I was greatly disappointed in the book. While it has lots of Great pictures and information, the editor, freddy Margoline has to let us know time and again how big her collection is or how she has personally met Mr. Schulz and stuff like that. I just never got a "Happiness is" feeling from this book like I got from the Andrea Podley and Derrick Bang book. That book (Peanuts Collectibles: Identification & Value Guide) really does give the "Happiness is a Peanuts Collection" feeling in the spirit that Sparky would appreciate. So if you can only get one book on Peanuts Collecting, get the Podley one - it has a "Happy" soul.
A Must Have for the serious Peanuts Collector!.......2000-07-31
This is the best Peanuts Collectors' book ever! It contains excellent pictures and the price values are right on target. These Peanuts collectibles are organized by where you might find them in your home, so it is user friendly. (i.e. Peanuts in the kitchen, bathroom, playroom etc.) It has been very helpful for shopping at auctions on the internet. I have even been able to find items by their discription when the seller has not provided a picture. This book is great and well worth its price.
The Ultimate Peanuts Collector Guide.......2000-04-19
Freddi's book is a MUST HAVE for anyone collecting or dealing in Peanuts memorabilia. The layout of the book is fabulous and you only have to go to the index to find exactly which page you need to be on unlike other guides that give you a ballpark topic. You want bobbleheads, look up bobbleheads etc! The pricing is fair and not out of this world. Some folks like to charge outlandish prices for Peanuts items but this book gives you the real scoop on what something is worth, so don't be fooled by those who tell you an item is rare and worth $100 when this book will tell you it was made yesterday and on;y worth what was originally paid for it.
The pictures are great, lots of them and clear and concise, not to mention they show the item as it should be, in pristine condition.
The Collectors Corner in the back of the book is great too because it gets you up close and personal with others who are just as crazy about Peanuts as you might be. You are not alone in your craziness!
BUY THIS BOOK!
Customer Reviews:
Great work, great photography and writing!.......2000-06-27
I really love a how-to book that uses great photos to illustrate. This book is perhaps that best that I have seen in this regard. The photos are simply superb. I think photos in a book like this should be one part "eye candy" to draw interest, and two parts used to illustrate a point or to inform. Again, this book is the best I've seen on this point.
The writing is also excellent. Its well researched and well written in a simple, yet pleasing style. Of course, if you're into growing giant pumpkins this book is absolutely essential, and you probably have it, or should get it. If you're not into pumpkins but want to write a "how-to" book, get this one to see the best.
Don't go in the patch until you read this book, period!.......1999-10-11
This colorful, informative book covers everything a grower needs to know to grow a pumpkin that will be the envy of the neighborhood. I give a tremendous amount of credit to this book for having helped me to grow an 819 pound pumpkin. If you have any desire to grow a giant pumpkin, then this book is worth its weight in gourds.
Read this book and start a hobby that will last a lifetime.
WONDERFUL BOOK for giant pumpkin growers!.......1998-11-22
I have read and enjoyed this book - more importantly the information was great in helping my pumpkins grow larger. The intended audience is one who wishes to grow BIG, and I mean BIG pumpkins. Growing large pumpkins can be done by anyone (with the help of this book). It is also a fun hobby that you can enjoy with your children. There is nothing like putting a 500+ pound orange jack-o-lantern on your front porch on Halloween and letting the neighborhood enjoy the sight of it. No one I have ever met does not smile when they see a big object like a giant pumpkin, it is guaranteed a great conversation piece. This book helps you learn about seed, soil, growing techniques, watering, and contests and even displaying your fruit after it is harvested. The author has spent lots of time fully researching this hobby and has done a great job of presenting the material of this unique endeavor to anyone who might enjoy gardening or growing large curabits. The pictures alone are worth the price of this book! This book is much better than World Class Giant Pumpkins the previous one by the same author. There are three or four other books or articles regarding this subject that are not as extensive as this one. If growing pumpkins is something you might enjoy or you have already tried to grow pumpkins and were not happy with the results this book will prove invaluable.

Rushed to market, stuck in neutral.......2004-09-06
I ordered this book as a primary text for an intro c*3 class, and I am dissappointed at the large number of typos and poor explanations of steps and procedures. There are many places where in a given tutorial, the instructions do not match to what is required; this left my students forced to guess on how to proceed.
I understand and appreciate the publisher trying to be the first to market, but jeez... have someone actually go thru the exercises with the book at hand! Assuming that all is well has cost my students lots of wasted effort.
Good but rift with typos.........2004-06-01
First of all, congrats for finally getting a book out on Combustion, discreet's amazing motion graphic software. The book covers the surface on many of the software's features. I ordered this for my class's textbook for supplimental lessons at home. However, the tutorials are filled with many typos that would only be caught by people that would know what they are doing and easily found confusing for beginners. The typos have stopped my class in their tracks at home trying to decypher what the next possible step could be, as the book keeps misleading them with incorrect instruction. There are video tutorials of the book's projects on the accompanying cd that demystify the errors but I feel they should've got the printed instructions correct as well. Good book, just watch your step.

The Lift and Death of Martin Luther King, Jr. On April 4, 1968, a shot rang out in Memphis, Tennessee, killing the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The leader of the civil rights movement was dead, felled by an assassin's bullet. Who was Martin Luther King, and why do we remember him? Award-winning author James Haskins chronicles Dr. King's life and the circumstances surrounding his death. With an afterword.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2000-01-22
This book was about the life of a hero, Martin Luther King, Jr. It tells us how he served his community. There were interesting pictures. Our fifth grade class learned a lot about African-American history through this book.
I very much enjoyed this factual book.......1997-12-12
I feel that this book was written very thoroughly. It included indepth facts that really let the reader know what happened. This book was obviously researched heavily, and I congradulate the author on writing such a magnificent book. Although it was not really my choice in reading this book, I am glad that I had, for it has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. I, being a fifteen year old sophomore student of Penn High School, find this a great book to use in researching Dr. King's past events, assassination, murder(s), and conspiracy theories.
