Book Description
Here is the original, rarely seen Tai Ji Quan developed by Yang Lu Chan's best Imperial Palace Guard student, Quan You, over 150 years ago. While other styles branched off into sport, health, and meditation, Quan You's disciples preserved the traditional ways. This book covers the principles, characteristics, and essentials of the Wu method, along with its famous masters. The entire classical form is illustrated step-by-step, and includes weapons skills.

Northern Wu Style Taiji and Sword Forms.......2007-06-17
Although it is always preferable to have a teacher, this book goes a long way towards providing the images and text for learning Taiji on your own, which is an unusual occurance. The images are sharp and there are many of them. Using figure numbers, the images are linked to the text, which is as clearly written as is possible.
The introduction gives excellent background on the evolution of Northern style taiji and provides biographies of the people that developed and spread the art. The introduction is followed by a section on the Principles of Wu Style Taijiquan, which provides interesting information on the differences between the hard and soft, and the external and internal martial arts styles.
The Wu style described in the book consists of 83 movements with images covering the beginning and end of each movement plus images for all key changes in posture.
In addition to the Taiji form, the book contains a good section on Push hands, which incluses more than 50 images showing fighting applications using the Wu style movements.
The Classical Sword Form is also presented and the presentation is just as well done and extensive as the Taiji form.
The book is a well done, authoritative, excellent addition to the martial arts literature.
A Very Useful Art in Many Ways.......2007-03-09
This is a Great Book by Tina Zhang and Frank Allen on how to do Northern Wu Style Tai Ji. Having studied Wu Style Short Form for 6 months with Frank Allen I can honestly say that many things he taught me in person are explained in great detail in this book. All students of all styles of Tai Ji will benefit from reading it and incorporating its techniques into their daily practice. If you are interested in Tai Ji You Must Get This Book !!!!!
Lifelong Reference on Wu Style Tai Ji Quan.......2007-02-20
This is a great book on the art of tai ji quan (tai chi chuan). It offers an excellent overview of the internal martial arts principles of Wu style tai ji quan, and addresses the aspects of the art that contribute to good health and longevity. The history of the Northern Wu is very interesting and includes rare archival photographs. The form and practical application of the postures are well presented, as is the section on the Wu sword form. This is the kind of book you buy to keep as a lifelong reference as you develop the skills of tai ji quan - from knowing the techniques (zhao shu), to understanding internal energy and gaining tai ji quan power (dong jin), and progressing to the advanced level where the spirit is calm, happy, relaxed, and free to use flowing techniques at will (shen ming). (See Chapter 8.) I can't wait for the authors' book on Bagua, due out this summer!
Thorough, complete and compelling.......2006-12-28
On the bookshelves of the martial arts section there are few books that can truly be called thorough and complete. The "Classical Northern Wu Style Tai Ji Quan" by Tina Zhang and Frank Allen in one of these few.
The history section is a concise look at the history of Tai Ji Quan from the perspective of the northern Wu style school. Instead of just regurgitating the usual legends, it tells an interesting story and gives the reader a quick introduction to the confusing and convoluted field of martial arts history. Unlike many Tai Ji books it actually has some new information, specifically about the Northern Wu style so that any Tai Ji player will get some new perspective on the development of the art.
The principles of practice are well laid out and to the point. There are many facets to be worked on here from alignments, to breathing, vision, and more. Very interesting are instructions on Compression and Expansion which is often absent in Tai Ji practice, yet is one of Tai Ji's most useful and enriching aspects.
The form is taught carefully with full instructions, yet not overlong or boring. Tai Ji enthusiasts should be able to make a close comparison of this with their own work and see how it is the same and different. The sword form is also fully taught and should also be quite useful for comparison.
A note on the combat applications. Any Chinese martial arts book that is missing the fighting uses of the form should be considered useless. This is where the hard gongfu training is demonstrated. The creativity and proficiency of the author is always shown best in the applications. Your form may be great but are your fighting moves silly and wrong-headed? In the case of "Classical Northern Wu Style Tai Ji Quan" the answer is decidedly not! The applications are a short section, but instead of wasting endless space on explanations, the pictures are worth a thousand words. Each shows the essence of a fighting technique, and almost all of the Wu style form movements are demonstrated in combative use. The demonstrations are clear and provide much fodder for exploration and experimenation by the reader. They are simple and direct so you can grab a friend and quickly get to work trying them out with no wasted time.
Finally the theory and translation of the Tai Ji classics in the end is of course another mandatory part of a good Ta Ji book. The special points of Northern Wu Tai Ji are also translated so the reader gets a small taste of what makes this style unique.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all Tai Ji Quan players, and all who want a close look at the intricacies of Chinese martial arts.
Sincerley,
Jess O'Brien

A "Must Have" for the Internal Martial Artist's library... .......2006-12-19
Not only does this book offer a detailed description and clear photography of the Tai Ji Form and Sword Form, for these alone would be reason for those practicing or interested in Classical Northern Wu Style.
What makes this book invaluable for ALL internal martial artists is its direct and straight to the point explanations of the martial applications, how to apply the qualities of a Tai Ji practice to become more effective, and specifically what training methods the internal fighter will utilize in contrast to an external stylist. It is within these teachings that Tina Zhang and Frank Allen show their understanding of the complete art, integrating all the components into a whole... which is the essence of Tai Ji.

Book Description
A lyrical, lively natural history and illustrated guide to the wonderful world of...pigs!
Not all animals are created equal. For a start, pigs have it, sheep don't; that is, that special quality of intelligence, a sense of play, and a gregariousness that make these tragically misunderstoodyet no less endearingcreatures more like us than any other animal. Best-selling author Lyall Watson takes a delightful look at the occasionally amusing, often instructive, and completely admirable qualities of pigs in this indispensable book, not only for everyone interested in natural history but also for fans of Babe, lovers of Piglet, readers of Charlotte's Web and Animal Farm, gourmands and truffle hunters, folklorists, and, of course, believers in meaningful interspecies communication. The book is filled with both realistic and wonderfully fanciful illustrations of pigs that illuminate everything you could possibly want to know about the extraordinary family of Suids, from their origins and evolution, rich social lives, and combat strategies to their special relationship with truffles, popularity in art and literature, and increasing use today in cutting-edge medical transplant technology. 50 color, 30 b/w illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
---------------.......2004-12-24
These days the majority of us are city-bred and virtually clueless when it comes to farm animals. Rarely do we get much closer to these domestic denizens than the kindergarten song about Old MacDonald's boisterous barnyard. Except, of course, when we lift our forks, at which point such creatures hardly resemble their living selves. Perhaps this mollifies our consciences, i.e. that pork and beef, lamb and fowl seem nearer those edibles springing from the earth (corn and cabbage) and less like our not-so-distant, four-legged cousins.
With his 24th and latest book, Lyall Watson may inadvertently launch a new wave of vegetarianism, so charming is the porcine portrait he paints. (To counterbalance any economic shock to the meat industry, it should be mentioned that earlier in his three-decade writing career, Watson also penned a couple of essays on the topic of whether or not plants feel pain.) At any rate, once you have delved into "Whole Hog", you cannot help but come away with an altered perspective and just a bit of guilt about this `star' of so many meals.
Watson describes not only the hog versions with which we are familiar, but contrasts them with their wild varieties, as well as, their close relatives, the peccaries. He intersperses scientific fact with fanciful information such as the origin of piggy banks and the distance covered by a single year's worldwide sausage production.
This ode to pigs will likely bring criticism for something that has long been the bane of naturalists: anthropomorphism. Anything smacking of benevolence towards, or support of, animal consciousness elicits supercilious smirks from humans. (Are we inherently so unsure of our place in nature and our tenure as its `rulers'?) Loren Eiseley, who during his years as Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, won more awards and accolades than any predecessor except Franklin, addressed this. "There is a sense in which when we cease to anthropomorphize, we cease to be men, for when we cease to have human contact with animals and deny them all relation to ourselves, we tend . . . to deny our own humanity."
Watson, too, weighs in on the issue with, "It is indeed difficult to demonstrate true awareness or consciousness in other species, but it is becoming more difficult to deny the possibility of animals having minds and using mental experience in the practice of their behavior."
This book is filled with sober and comical photos, statue renderings, and drawings of pigs in various situations. Several are downright endearing, reminding me of someone I knew who, in raising an occasional hog to feed his large family, maintained detachment from the animals by giving them names such as `Food' and `Dinner'. If you have read any of Lyall Watson's books, you already know the smooth, effortless quality of his writing. If you haven't, let "The Whole Hog" be your introduction to it. You may well want to go back and read others ("Dark Nature," "Supernature," "Gifts of Unknown Things") representing this author's broad range of interests.

A must for those interested in biblical coins.......2003-01-22
I have been a collector of biblical coins for more than a decade, and Hendin's writings have been a tremendous help. I enjoy his insights, stories, and overall knowledge. The illustrations of the coins are wonderful, and the pictures in the back of the book are of top quality. I believe Hendin is the foremost expert in the world today when it comes to the coins of the Bible. Of course, these books are a bit pricy. I own the 1st and 3rd editions, but I've held off on the 4th just because I think I'll keep the pattern going and wait for the 5th ed. (2004 perhaps???). But if you own nothing, this edition is better than none. I highly recommend it, either as a resource manual or a book to read from cover to cover.
Interesting for everyone, essential for collectors........1997-10-14
For collectors of ancient coins, especially those of Biblical or Judaean coins, this work is essential. Now in its 3rd ed., Hendin has re-cataloged and listed coins that were in use from the time of Alexander The Great, through the first and second revolts, and to the city-statesunder Rome. The coins are not only described ingreat detail, but their HISTORY is clearly laid out so that it comes to life. Reading about them, even if one can't collect them, takes you back tothe time of ancient Greece and Rome. Biblical stories are set in context and become all the morereal.
Book Description
This is the fourth edition of the most widely used reference in the field of ancient Biblical and Jewish Coins, with more than 10,000 copies already in print. It is also the most complete edition yet, listing more than 550 different coins while maintaining the same numbering system as Hendin's popular third edition. Hendin has dramatically expanded the text with extensions and significant new material. This new edition contains a full 38 pages of photographic plates illustrating more than 500 coins and weights. Aimed at both beginning and advanced collectors, Hendin compiles the knowledge he has accumulated in the 34 years since his year-long stay in Israel as a volunteer of the Six Day War. At that time his weekly trips to the markets in Jerusalem led him into one of the world's most fascinating hobbies--collecting Biblical coins--with which he has remained fascinated every since.
The noted professional numismatist Herbert Kreindler has for the first time evaluated the coins in two grades for the Biblical coin series. Kreindler is also widely known as an expert in Biblical coins, and the evaluations are based upon worldwide auction and private markets of the past decade.

to own such a useful book
Biblical coins as witnesses to history.......2007-05-31
Few people have the resources to own ancient art unless it's in the form of coinage.
Likewise, few people have the ability to assemble their museum of bible history again unless it's in the form of coin ownership.
In this book you will discover that you can come to own the following coins all for less (sometimes significantly so) than $100 a piece:
1) Coinage from the time of the creation of the Second Temple. Minted under the Persians and later the Greeks these small silver coins are known as Yehuds for the use of the Hebrew letters for Y H and D on the coinage minted to denote its use in the Judah or Yehud district of those empires;
2) Coinage from Hasmonean reigns. Referred to as "Widow's Mites" in the New Testament, these coins overwhelmingly minted during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (103 to 76 BCE) and remained in common circulation for over two hundred years...well through the New Testament era;
3) Coinage from Pontius Pilate. In the years 29 and 31 Pilate minted two different varieties of small bronze coins. They have obvious value today for their connection with the events mentioned in the New Testament.
4) Coinage from the First and Second Jewish Revolts. Just as today, the Holy Land in the first century was a hotbed of action and political turmoil. The two most prominent manifestations of that turmoil were during the years 66 CE and 73 CE (during the First Jewish Revolt) and during the years 132 ant 135 CE (during the Second Jewish Revolt). In each case, it took the full weight of the Roman military to restore Roman control.
In this great book, Hendin also describes other coinage issued from the ancient Holy Land and shows copius pictures so that you can at least view the coins that may exceed your purchasing power.
Great read and a wonderful reference.......2006-08-14
I first read this book as more or less a total newcomer to the world of ancient Jewish coins. The stories of Hendin's introduction to the subject and his experiences in the world of ancient coin dealers are fascinating. The historical information presented in each chapter is informative, reliable, and will be appreciated by anyone with even a passing interest in the history of ancient Israel. Of course, the real reason for owning this book is that it is an indispensable and authoritative general reference on ancient biblical coins, and probably for the library of anyone interested in collecting or studying them. If there is one minor improvement that I might wish for in a future edition it would be to update the photographs of the coins with higher resolution images, preferably in color. Still, even in black and white the book is worth every penny.
Essential reference for collectors.......2006-05-16
Having collected ancient coins, mostly Judaean (and related Greek and Roman) for over twenty years, I use this reference more than all others combined. My collection is organized by "Hendin number".
I would recommend that any potential collector buy and read this book BEFORE buying their first coin!
Aside from its value as a reference, the stories alone are worth the price of admission.
Well balanced text for the collector.......2002-09-10
David Hendin makes not only great standard references, but includes many wonderful anecdotes about his experiences as a collector. The chapters are well divided, and there are plenty of plates and line drawings. A must for the Biblical coin collector, and makes for an interesting read even for the non-collector.

Limits on wealth?.......2007-07-03
On page 168, the author writes, "People must learn that after the first million or so, there is no more use to gaining more money." What an idiotic and unBiblical thing for the author to say! Many mines that produce the things that the world needs, require capital investment of up to $2-7 billion! Mexican mines are often undercapitalized, and the owners have never saved, nor invested, to the extent that Americans will do. China suffers similarly, from the communist sentiment expressed above, and likewise has underdeveloped mines; from lack of capital, to lack of engineering expertise. Job, Abraham, and Jacob were all extremely wealthy. If Joseph in Egypt did not have the wealth of the entire kingdom of Egypt at his disposal, he would not have been able to spare the nation, and surrounding nations, from the 7 year famine!

With this book anyone can grow grass........2007-10-11
All I can say this is one of the best book I bought about growing grass. I could never get my grass to grow. If your into natural recipes this is the book for you. A lot of the ingredients you need to make the recipes are everyday household items. I have a dog that is alergic to everything I could never use any type of fertilizer on my lawn. This book show you ways to feed your lawn without using a lot of chemicals. So if your like me and never can get grass to grow this book is the solution.
good information.......2007-05-18
I really liked the information, but I found that many of the ingredients were not readily available
Great Book.......2006-11-10
I purchased this book early last summer. I had the chance to try a few of his potions... WOW! They work!
Finally Organization.......2006-08-29
Jerry Baker's Green Grass Magic is a wonderful book for people who want to know more about growing grass (the turf kind) but, don't want to be to technical. He does get into the technical aspects of Grass but those sections are delivered simply and in small chuncks with a dose of humor. What I like about Mr. Baker is that reading his books is a bit like talking with your grandfather, he interjects tidbits about how life was and wisdom from his Grandma Putt, in with his advice for your lawn. Mr. Baker has finally gotten better in orginazing his books. You can quickly find the information that you want. His chapter headings give you an idea about that that chapter is about which makes it easier to find a given subject and the book is indexed. He has put all of the recipies that crop up in the book for his various tonics and such in the back of the book as well as through out the book. It makes it a lot easier to look up what is in a given tonic. I like the tonics that he gives though, the neighbors raise eyebrows when they find that I am buying Beer for my lawn, but, if you do what he tells you to do then you will have a more beautiful lawn.
Jerry Baker's Green Grass Magic.......2006-07-20
Good info. Have used one of the tonics and found that it does work...

Book Description
Desktop publishing is one of the fastest growing applications of personal computers, producing documents that look as if they had been printed rather than typed. Xerox Ventura Publisher is one of the most popular desktop packages because it permits the user to have full control over all of
the typesetting functions. This control also leads to complexity, both in the package and its documentation. Colin Day has written Using Ventura Publisher to bridge the gap between the uninitiated beginner and the user-friendly manual. In a step-by step fashion, he shows the reader how to use
Ventura with a pre-existing style sheet, and progresses to teaching how to design and amend new style sheets. After covering the basic methods, the author discusses more advanced topics in a reference format in the final part of the book.

Book Description
Desk-top publishing--one of the fastest growing applications of personal computers--offers the capacity to produce professional quality documents in a vast array of styles. Xerox Ventura Publisher is one of the most popular desk-top publishing packages, now released in version 2.0. Ventura is
very powerful, permitting the user to have full control over all typesetting functions. However, this very power leads to the complexity of both the package and its documentation. The result for many potential users is initial bewilderment and loss of enthusiasm. In this new book, Colin Day
bridges the "readability" gap between the uninitiated beginner and the instruction manual. In a straightforward step-by-step approach, he shows how to use Ventura with a pre-existing style sheet, and progresses to the design and subsequent development of individualized systems. Once the basic
methods are covered, advanced and supplementary topics are treated in a reference format. In the final part of the book, the new "Professional Extension" is described, which allows typesetting of equations, tables, and other difficult material. This is an ideal reference for every user of the
popular Ventura software, whether at home, at school, or in the office.

Book Description
"Mose YellowHorse's 1920 fastball traveled "in the neighborhood of ninety-five miles an hour," and Todd Fuller's bio of YellowHorse is a similarly powerhouse affair. Avid and loving in the tribute it pays to this too-neglected American original, but willing to distinguish Mose the myth from the everyday Mose the man, this deeply researched and widely encompassing journey through baseball, politics, poetry, prose, stats, tribal life, and comic strip shenanigans is surely Fuller's equivalent of having all the bases loaded."-Albert Goldbarth
Mose YellowHorse (1898â1964), a Skidi Pawnee, played professional baseball for nearly a decade, most notably with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1921 and '22. Aside from his baseball achievements, YellowHorse, as a boy, traveled with and performed in Pawnee Bill's Wild West show, later served in the Army during World War I, and also appeared as a character in Chester Gould's Dick Tracy comic strip. After his death, he earned induction into both the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame. His baseball glove remains on permanent display at the Baeball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Using a structural pattern based on an old-time Pawnee Indian storytelling session, many voices and perspectives collaborate to form a multi-faceted recreation of Mose YellowHorse's life. Poetry, oral histories (from tribal elders), critical essays, letters, cartoons, photographs, and newspaper accounts are all included as a way of focusing on cross-cultural tensions.
Todd Fuller teaches Creative Writing and Literature at Drake University. In 1999 he completed his Ph.D. in Creative Writing and Native American literatures from Oklahoma State University, where he researched this book for eight years, with the help of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. The author is donating half of his royalties to establish the Mose YellowHorse Higher Education Endowment.
Customer Reviews:
outstanding.......2004-03-26
I was very impressed by the author's creative way in which he presented this biography. Fuller exercises his gifted skills as a poet as well as delivers a well researched history of Mose Yellowhorse. It's both entertaining and informative.
good read.......2004-01-13
I read this book when I was writting a graduate Thesis for baseball history. Good read to get information. Understand that he wanted a unique way to set up book. Maybe only drawback if reading for information. Is good that it includes oral history of the man, statistical history and analytical history. A good read for entertainment or historical review.
TODD.......2003-11-25
Todd was my English Comp teacher in college, good guy, made me believe I could write and I havent stopped since. I was so proud when I read this book.
Could not put the book down!.......2003-11-07
I don't normally read sports biographies, however, a friend of mine, aware of my interest in American Indian history, recommended this book to me after she'd had the priviledge of attending one of the author's readings. Fascinating indeed! The life and legend of Mose Yellowhorse is told wonderfully and passionately through the talents of Todd Fuller. This book is an amazing journey from start to finish. Take it from me, I could not put the book down!
A book that needs to be on every shelf, in every home.......2003-02-28
Through Fuller's careful research and beautifully written poetry, we get a unique, intriguing, and entertaining biography on the life of Mose Yellowhorse. As a proud member of the Pawnee Nation, I highly commend Fuller for his dedication to see this work to its completion. For without him, Mose's story would have remained untold and what a shame that would have been for Native American history, Native American sports history, the Pawnee Nation and for Mose Yellowhorse himself.
...1) This book is about the first full-blood American Indian to play baseball in the major leagues. That he accomplished such a difficult thing in an era when not even African Americans were allowed to play in the majors, is something that all American Indians should be proud of (not just the Pawnee). 2) From this book, Non-Native society learns that Indians DO exist, not just in the historical sense but in contemporary, everyday existence. Non-Native society learns that Indians CAN accomplish great things, such as, playing major league baseball. 3) It could be that Yellowhorse's own words are absent from this book because he passed away nearly 40 years ago and also, it states very clearly in the book that Yellowhorse left no journals or other writings behind. (Possible explanation for that "emptiness," I don't know).
