Good hints and strategies..........2007-05-22

I am giving 5 stars because I think this is a good book, easy to read, and has some great hints and strategies in it. It's probably good for the first time online learner. To me, however, it was a bit simplistic...probably because I've have `been around the block'. I am great with organizing and prioritizing so some of the chapters weren't really for me.
Still, I think that many people will find valuable hints regarding making online learning fun and meaningful. The section on preparing your computer is also very helpful.

If you are unsure about online learning, this book is certain to help you.

An essential companion.......2004-05-09

Not only is the online classroom a new environment for learning, it is also one for which few learners have been formally prepared. A great book for new sheltie owners........2004-08-28

After losing our beloved dog TJ after 16 years of great companionship, I was looking for a good book to get back into the swing of owning a puppy. This book is very good at covering all the basics of dog ownership and also touches on the advanced aspects of ownership. All the info. is up to date ( unlike the Sheltie "bible" Sheltie Talk...which hasnt been updated since the mid '80's.). Very nicely illustrated with drawings and color photos..with a nice back section to put in important info about your sheltie and a nice baby photo!

Lovely how-to on adding illumination to calligraphy

In the under $15 range of books regarding the methods of illumination, this little book can't be beat--and it is better then a number of how-to's priced over $15. The book offers a historical survey of illumination, an introduction to materials, 5 projects small enough to be non-intimidating to beginners (without being too simple for those with experience), and a gallery of modern calligraphy.

The book is lavishly illustrated with color photos, and is written in a friendly manner--no difficult jargon here. There is a small glossary for those bits of calligraphy terminology that can't be avoided.

The emphasis of the book is on modern usage; if you are looking for a book regarding historical method, you may be a bit disappointed. The "hisorical" calligraphic hands are all modern adaptations, as are the techniques and projects. On the other hand, if you want a lovely book to assist you in branching into illumination, this is for you.

I do think that the technique section is missing some worthy tips. Too, this book is written for those who dwell in England. This makes the suppliers list pretty useless for anyone not in the British Isles, and makes those who still use English Measurement run for their Metric Convesion Tables.

The Arizona Master Gardeners are a leathery skinned grizzley bunch of hard scrabble gardeners. They cut the dust by biting into raw barrel cactus like most people would a water mellon. It takes a lot of work to become one, and they put on a lot of shows for the public.

This is a great book, but not at $50. Amazon Canada has it for $14. Germany has it for $537, which says something about the dollar these days. So by all means get this very practical book and put it to use, just not at those prices.

Family History With Popular Appeal.......2004-06-10

The author's excellent memory for the colorful details of his growing-up years makes this a vivid coming-of-age story, set within the greater context of the development of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. My own family also came from Eastern Europe to the Eastern United States about a century ago, and I loved recognizing bits and pieces of my own grandparents' experiences in the stories Mr. Nolbay tells in his inimitable, authentic style. His relationship with his father is a particularly moving strand woven into the fabric of the tale, and I loved reading Mr. Nolbay's interpretation of his father's accent, which evoked memories of my own father quoting his dad, who spoke Yiddish and came from a shtetl in the Ukraine to make his way in America.

How the book touched my heart and brought back so many memories... such as... my mother sewing neckties and my father selling them door to door in New York. When he just could not live with that anymore, he worked the graveyard shift for Klein's downtown as a bookkeeper. (He was a symphony conductor in Berlin, Germany -- never touched a piano again) I arrived in New york with my parents in 1938 and lived from 1938 to 1952 at West 98th Street between West End Ave. and Broadway. I loved the book, the places he writes about is like old home to me. .

touching.......2001-02-03

I didn't think I would enjoy this book till I got into it and couldn't stop. The author (or narrator) tells a poignant story of growing up in America during the early part of the Century in such an interesting and unique way, that it almost made laugh and cry at the same time.I hope he writes the sequel soon.

Great book- brought back many fond memeries

Sentimental Journey to the Past.......2000-03-30

Having grown up in the Bronx, NY during the great depression, seeing my older brothers go off to war, I found this book taking me back to my childhood. Though the author was a generation slightly ahead of mine, the experiences of his family could easily mirror those of my own. The author has absolutely captured the essence of the times in a charming history of a Jewish family from Poland and its Americanization.

The goals and aspirations of the idealist father that were never realized by him, which were brought to successful fruition by the son, is an inspirational story to be appreciated by any reader. Once started it's hard to put down.

My favorite field guide in the field.......2002-11-26

I am a naturalist guide for the San Diego parks department and the local natural history museum. When I carry only one book on a hike, this is it. Benefits: Clear. Great drawings. Light. Easy to carry. A great key. Facts on how the Native Americans used these plants. There are other books with more photos, more pages, etc, but this is light but comprehensive and covers a ton of information in under 200 pages. I carry it on every trip.

Arctic conditions exist even at the top of the Himalayas which lie near the Equator. It is little wonder then that the high peaks of the Arctic and Antartic mountain ranges should be the coldest places on earth.

This extreme cold brings with it problems for the animals that inhabit the regions of ice and snow. The author reveals how nature helps them to survive. She tells of the lined overcoats and snowshoes which the animals need to enable them to live and move about, of how some animals stay above ground in winter whereas others are forced to go underground, of how soft snow becomes solid iceberg and why fish prefer cold waters to warm.

Chatty exchange of letters...........2001-10-11

A YEAR IN OUR GARDENS by Nancy Goodwin and Allen Lacy is a chatty exchange of letters and faxes between two old friends, both of whom have many years of gardening experience to their credit. Ms Goodwin ran Montrose Nursery for many years and is very informed and informing about plants -- native, cultivated, imported, and home-grown.

Dr. Lacy has written many books about gardening and garden design -- centered on his garden in New Jersey and other gardens futher afield. My personal favorite of Lacy's books is THE GARDEN IN AUTUMN, although THE INVITING GARDEN is probably his best selling book. I wouldn't recommend A YEAR IN OUR GARDENS to the novice gardener since it has no colorful photographs and a plethora of Latin named flowers and plants. Even the intermediate gardener searching for tips might find THE INVITING GARDEN a better read.

If you've been gardening awhile and like to read about green adventures from the comfort of your easy chair or need a good book for bedtime reading, you'll probably enjoy A YEAR IN OUR GARDENS. To me it's something of a cross between the books by Elizabeth Lawrence and Beverly Nichols. In fact, if Lawrence and Nichols had written to each other their conversations might have been a bit like the conversations of Goodwin and Lacey.

Goodwin and Lacey both had an affilitation with Duke University as did Elizabeth Lawrence though neither Goodwin nor Lacey is a botonist like Lawrence. Lacey wrote garden columns for the Wall Street Journal and New York Times and until recently taught philosopy and horitculture at Richard Stockton College in New Jersey where he lives and gardens. Lawrence's father was Lacey's professor of English at Duke University, and Lawrence lives and gardens near Hillsborough NC.

Both Goodwin and Lacey have gardens in growing zone 7. As they relate their experiences over the course of the year, it becomes obvious this counts for little. Lacey lives near the Atlantic, has sandy soil he must amend with humus, and experiences milder summers and colder winters. Goodwin lives in the NC piedmont, gardens in clay, and has hot-hot summers. Both have green houses that allow them to cultivate a variety of plants more suited to tropical climates. Lacey tends to grow many plants in pots on a large extended deck, while Goodwin has a much larger property with room for numerous shubs and trees and a woodland garden. Lacey says he prefers summer months for gardening, and Goodwin says she prefers anything but summer.

In addition to the exchange about plants, garden design and the various wildlife sightings, both correspondents share the ups and downs of daily living. Over the course of a year, Lacey undergoes major surgery and Goodwin's husband has eye surgery and her father dies. Both Godwin and Lacey travel to various locations to give lectures and undergo interviews on television and radio. Martha Stewart drops by for a fifteen minute tour of Montrose, and Lacey goes to Disneyland.

All in all this book is mildly entertaining, and a peek into the lives of two relatively well educated gardeners.
