Useful Preparation Guide in Preparing for Running a Marathon.......2006-01-28

Richard Benyo is an experienced marathon runner and ultra marathon runner. His writing style is easy to follow and very helpful. He talks of the pitfalls of bad exercise habits and talks about nearly every imaginable aspect related to running a marathon. I say "nearly" only because I have yet to have a question that his book hasn't answered.

I've twice went against his advice only to have his excerpts staring back at me as if to say, "See? I told you so. Next time follow what is here or you'll see, as I've written, what will happen."

The book is broken down, for easy reference, into various sections from "Twenty Questions 2 Months Prior to your Marathon" to "Lessons from Great Marathon Runners" excerpts on the day before, day of, and day after, and many other chapters that deal with subject matter ranging from injuries, diet, training plan and running beyond the marathon distances.

I refer to his book daily and in my training for my upcoming marathon, I feel much more confident with the ideas he has presented here which have become a sort of mantras in my focus to accomplishing my goal of completing a marathon successfully without injury.

Excellent help for my first marathon.......2000-10-20

I was never a runner but I wanted to run a marathon so a friend recommended this book. It is an excellent "how-to" manual and I followed it word-for-word. Benyo gives advice from day one through the actual races (mile by mile) and post race recovery. I hope this book makes it back into print because it is an excellent guide to running a first marathon.

OOOOOPS.......2007-03-26

I did a search for a very specific title AND edition (7th) and then hit purchase even though an image of the item was not available (I knew I needed a "purple" book). Boy was I surprised to get a different edition of the book (6th) with a yellow cover. So, after having paid for overnight delivery because I was already two weeks late in getting a book I needed for school, here I was with a book I couldn't use and now I was looking at being three weeks late and behind in my schoolwork! Long story short, I gave them another chance and this time I got the right book and Amazon gave me 100% credit for the 1st book, including the return shipping. Way to go!

Delightful.......2005-11-17

Having been a student of german for several years now, I have been able to study from several texts and I find this one the most pleasant. I appreciate the layout and the vibrant colors which help to make the book more fun. I wouldn't say either that the book is tough - however it is what it says it is - an intermediate text. Anyone with the appropriate background and a desire to learn more German could get through this book. I would recommend it - it is my favorite german text.

Decent.......2003-09-07

I have been studying German for three years now and this book is probably the best I have ever had. This is not to say that it is excellent though. The book's layout is somewhat confusing and the non-Grammer sections could be a lot more clear. The Author's use of vocabulary can also be intimidating at times for the beginner. Overall though, a decent textbook that could do with a revision or two.

Kaleidoskop - A good mix of topics.......2000-03-22

I am a student in my third year of German tutoring and this is my fourth text book. It is refreshingly different when compared to the other texts that I have used to date. It mixes in relatively current articles from magazines and utilizes videotape to help with listening exercises. We have not used the audio tapes at all. It has a good variety of topics and exercises that are supported by the grammar sections at the rear of the text. The grammar is not embedded in the chapters. Instead, it is in sequential sections at the end of the book which correspond to the chapter progression at the start of the book. I definitely prefer it over the Themen and Wie Geht's books.

A little bit of everything.......2007-01-11

This is a wonderful book for fans of DTWOF with little cartoons from calanders and what not. However, it is not a part of the series, so people looking for additions to the narrative of the books will be disappointed or a bit frustrated. But aside from that, this is a book full of goodies, perfect to savor a little bit at a time.

Unusually insightful and fresh for such a long-running show.......2002-05-15

Even as a white middle class hetero, I enjoy following on an ocassional basis the progress of Ms. Bechdel's cast of characters. It's rare to find a cartoonist who has so sucessfully kept a shtick going so long without becoming hopelessly stale (although perhaps it's a bit easier for a self-consciously running commentary on society and politics wherre the material is a little more dynamic than, say, the antics of Dennis the Menace or Little Jeffrey)....

You Must Have It.......1998-10-10

Bechdel's prose here is as smart and funny as readers of the regular strip would expect. It starts as a memoir as she describes her beginnings and progression as a cartoonist, and includes lots of early drawings and strips. The bulk of the book is made up of stuff never seen in the DTWOF volumes: strips from her calendars, strips made for other magazines or special occasions, and autobiographical work. It's great stuff, always funny, and everyone with a sense of humor should buy it right away.

Ever wished you could meet the author of DTWOF?.......1998-05-05

This book is the next best thing.

It includes her earliest drawings (as in, from age 3), comments on what was happening in her life at the time that certain strips were drawn, what her mother thinks of certain storylines and who she was actually writing about in some of the more intimate one-shots.

Since Bechdel has stopped publishing calendars, there's a section that includes each one from 1990 to 1997. Also, there are stills from the "factory tour" screen saver, the results of an artist jam, a story timeline, and strips that were published elsewhere (for certain causes, specials for various magazines, and so on).

If you've got all of the other previous DTWOF books, this won't make your collection complete (there's a strip for teenagers about how to deal with a friend coming out that I just couldn't find in this book), but it will certainly help you get there. Warning: there is some overlap if you have all the books.

This was a neat surprise to find at Amazon.com -- I had no idea that Bechdel was working on this compliation. Definately add it to your collection!

Simple to follow but profound.......2003-12-09

I have used Wolff's books - for the dogs as well as for the cats - for years (the German versions) and buy it now for all of my friends in English. It is very easy to use and has profound advice, teaching a lot of things necessary to keep your four-legged friends healthy with homeopathy and telling you where the limitations for home cures are.

The Country Americana Price Guide is devoted to early American antiques and their modern-day collectibility. Though "Country Americana" is often thought of as products produced and used in rural areas, editor Kyle Husfloen points out that many items we consider "country" were actually mass-produced in cities. For the guide's purposes, he says "country" refers to "items [which] reflect our yearning for the charm and nostalgia of the 'good old days.'"

With 43 categories, the book covers a vast amount of collectibles from baskets and bootjacks to cash registers to fruit jars to woodenwares and writing accessories. Each section is prefaced by an explanation of what the items were used for, where and when they were produced, and a comment on the current prices. Descriptions are short and clear. For example, "Pitcher, 10" h. brushed cobalt blue tulip decoration, 'Burger & Lang, Rochester, NY,' 1 gal., ca. 1870 (some surface wear & chips along the rim from use) $605." Interesting information, but unrealistic prices........2003-06-04

This price guide has alot of good information and pictures that can be used for comparison purposes, but if a dealer were to base his prices on some of those in the book, he would end up "sitting on" his inventory for a long time. Even a New York dealer or an ebay seller would have trouble getting some of these prices. I'm a dealer in the middle of antique country in Penna., and specialize in 'country' items. Perhaps the duck decoy for $132,000 is given as an example of an extreme, but the book would be more useful if it just covered the average, good quality antique. There's a tendency today to over-estimate the value of antiques (eg. Antiques Roadshow), but in today's economy, that has just become 'wishful thinking'. Would that it were true.

A First Class Volume On Country Americana !.......2000-07-26

This 432 page, softbound, 6 x 9" year 2000 book is really handy to keep with you as a reference guide when you antique. There are about 50 full color and 1000 black and white photos. Year 2000 values are provided. In addition to articles on investing in antiques, major topics range from baskets, butter molds and stamps, cash registers, chalkware and decoys to kitchenwares, laundry room, lightning rod balls, shaker items, tobacciana and writing accessories. Each topic is comprehensively covered, and individual items contain enough detail for easy item identification. It is truly one of the most comprehensive and in-depth price guides ever published on these important cultural artifacts. You'll refer to it often.

Of the many books I've read on southwest gardening, this was the most rewarding. I learned so much about native and adaptive plants that are suited to our climate and growing conditions here in the southwest. Also about the different "microclimates" that determine proper location of particular plants in the garden so they will thrive. After applying the valuable information from this book to my own gardening efforts I see miraculous results! This book is a MUST for New Mexico gardeners interested in beautiful, water conservative plants.

INNOVATIVE THEOLOGY.......2002-01-26

Although terribly expensive, Huebner's monograph is a remarkable achievement because it is the first one in living memory to analyze the little known relations between two early Christian heresies - Monarchianism and Gnosticism. They embodied two absolutely opposing principles, monism and dualism, with mainstream Christianity fluctuating between them. Arianism which shook most of the 4th century most probably sprang up as a Alexandrian reaction against Monarchianism but, in spite of some similarities with Gnosticism, it is a quite a different phenomenon. To sum up, Huebner's book which should be translated into English and other languages is a very important contribution to the current debate about the religious and cultural situation in late Antiquity.

I am astounded by how many of the present reviews here state that this book dwells too long on race. They seem to miss the point. It is all about race and how that is interpreted within American society. Race as it relates to power, power of white over black. Its history continues to have huge resonance within the society to this day. Fatheralong dwells on the impact of racism felt within the fabric of African American families - particularly focusing on how it translates from father to son. A subject that is not happy or pretty, but is conveyed in a poetic, thoughtful, confrontational and heartfelt way. Nothing will change unless people grapple with the enormous fallout of racism. This book is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the dynamics of racism.

Read this book.......2000-08-23

Being a South African i see the effects that the ideology of race has had every day. Yet Fatheralong took my breath away and left me feeling very sad and ashamed but not without hope for the future. Widemans' use of prose is both eloquent and angry, which is also reflected in the structure of the novel. Short bursts of anger are alternated with more lengthy contemplative passages. The flow in prose (and the lack of distinction between him and his father) creates the impression that now, once Wideman is a father himself, he and his father have become one. The seperation that once existed is now erased and the bond between father and son can be mended. But race is not the only issue that gets tackled here. Like Susan Faludi, Wideman is also talking about a generation of men who had fathers who weren't so much absent as silent.

I thought the book was very confusing but I liked the way it protrayed the father-son relationship. I thought that Wideman used many stereotypes of whites in the south that he really didn't need to write about. overall the book was decent but it seemed to jump around a little too much for me.

When you look past the curse words, and incomplete sentences this book makes a little since. Wideman's book makes you look deep down into your soul, and makes you discover that you are a little raciest. The book also reinforces how important a strong family unit can be in the development of a person. In this time, when people are searching for the causes of why our society has so many problems this book brings answers. 412587

Worst story I have ever read.......1998-03-04

In my family, we were brought up to enjoy reading. I always love to read books, even when they are assigned. I must say though, Fatheralong had to be the worst book I have ever read. The number one problem is that it does not stick to one thing at a time. It constanly jumps around and is extremly hard to follow. I did not enjoy the content either. Widman seems angry through out the book. He talks of people being racist, but some of his comments seem to be a bit prejediced toward people. The last thing that I thought was kind of ironic. The whole book was a letter to his son that was in prison. NParri
