Customer Reviews:
Not What I Expected.......2007-06-27
It was a summary of a textbook that I have not seen. It wasn't clear when I purchased it that it wasn't the text. Not able to use.
Not a textbook.......2007-03-12
I can't find any notes in this book, only exercise, i was so disappointed with this book.
Such a great "Hands-On" resource!.......2002-01-25
As a performance enhancement specialist, I am constantly looking for activities and exercies to do with my clients. This book helps to develop PST programs, including various activites to do with your athletes. This book was used as a text in a Sport Psychology class that I took. I have found it to be extremely helpful and fully recommend it.
The best of applied sport psychology theory and practice........2000-09-12
Jean William's edited text is a favorite of mine. I use it in our graduate program at Georgia Southern University. The authors have done an excellent job of presenting both the "whys" and "how tos" of the intervention techniques in sport psychology. Several leading sport psychologists have made significant, easy to understand, contributions to this text. This book has accomplished the rare feat of being able to be used as an academic text AND a "performance enhancement" book for the interested athlete, coach, exerciser, or other performers.
Book Description
Revised and updated to include recent archaeological discoveries and historical events, the World History Atlas is the most wide-ranging portrait of world history ever published. Combining state-of-the-art cartography with historical information and detailed regional mapping, this is a compelling look at the human journey.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful ..........2006-02-12
I've always been interested in history but most of my attempts to learn about it are thwarted by dry boring accounts. This atlas has been wonderful. It has given me a wonderful broad view of history and a better understanding of world geography.
Enjoy
Great Atlas, Poor Binding.......2006-01-06
I bought this atlas for my husband. He's really into geography and such, and he really likes the atlas. My only complaint is that they are poorly bound. I bought it for him for Christmas and by the end of Christmas day the whole back cover had separated from the main binding. I sent it back and got another one, and when I first opened it and looked at it, the same thing was already happening to it, and we hadn't even used it! We decided to keep it anyway since it wasn't hurting anything really and he really enjoys reading it. Just watch out for that problem as it seems unlikely that we would get the only two books that were falling apart in that manner. Also, he said that in the first one we got, some of the maps were right across the center of two pages, so you couldn't see the part that was down in the center where it goes into the binding. In the second one we got it wasn't as severe.
History Written from the Anglo-American Perspective.......2005-12-03
I was actually anticipating something better. There are, of course, some minor flaws and discrepancies, I'm sure they'll all be rectified in the next edition. But there are also many great flops and extremely biased historical expositions, mostly about 20th century issues -whitewashing U.S. and the West, denigrating Cold War opponents, partiality about certain southeastern Europe factions, omitting some of the most important historical carnages(namely, the Armenian genocide and other many atrocious events which took place around world. Prepared by a majorty English team and a general editor, this book will fall short of your expectations and not satisfy you, especially about the the European history part of which I consider the number of maps insufficient and not too detailed as it should be.
Rue the day I bought this atlas. They used to do better than this. Don't spend your precious money on this one if you're really searching out for something good.
Superb integration of pics, timelines, data and maps all in one book!.......2005-10-01
To understand the histories of separate countries, one has to put it in the context of the whole world. And this book is really good by having two parts: Part 1 (over 100 pages) is devoted to the holistic presentation of the evolution of the history of the whole world, whereby the reader can understand the interaction between countries and conduct interesting comparisons and contrasts between them on the same timeline. Part 2 is devoted to the evolution of the histories of separate regions. When one combines the two parts in one's mind, one's interpretation of the world history can never be the same!
History of humankind is full of politics, arts, science, achievements and frailty here and there, now and then. This book, with its superb combination of different data formats, can really give one the primal sense of wonder generated from the history made by human beings.
If you think history is fun and exiting, your view will be confirmed by this book. If you think history is no fun and no excitement, you will have a second thought after reading this gigantic book!
Awesome book!.......2005-08-09
This book is absolutely fabulous. It contains a lot of great information and does a great job of integrating history and geography.
Book Description
With its multicultural orientation and dazzling maps, photos, and artworks, the DK Atlas of World History is the first truly global chronicle of humankind's experience on Earth. Remote-sensed data and digital cartography provide the most accurate mapping ever used in a historical atlas. Every map is enhanced by photographs, artworks, diagrams, timelines, and expertly researched and clearly written annotations and text. Produced in consultation with a team of over 30 academic historians, geographers, and cartographers, the atlas uses a two-tier approach: Part One-the Eras of World History-presents a global overview of the last 60,000 years, while Part Two-Regional Histories-focuses on specific geocultural areas, including coverage of places and peoples often ignored by more traditional atlases. All these elements combine to create a historical atlas that is a joy to explore, easy to use, and unmatched in its breadth and depth of information.
Customer Reviews:
If you didn't get enough falsified history in government schools..........2007-06-03
If you didn't get enough falsified history in government schools, this is definitely the atlas for you. Your first clue is the book's adoption of the anti-Christian "B.C.E./C.E." affectation, denying the undeniable, that Jesus Christ is the pivot point of World History. What one reviewer terms "politically correct" is simply a polite euphemism for this book's pervasive anti-Christian treatment of World History, denying, denigrating, and/or marginalizing 1,500 years of Christendom. Christendom financed and otherwise supported the development of universities, agriculture, exploration, law, medicine, and -- notwithstanding the Black Legends about "Dark Ages" -- science. This atlas does not offer an intellectually honest assessment of World History. Too much government school? Un-brainwash yourself. Start with: How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Thomas E. Woods Jr.
Great reference.......2005-12-02
With so much stuff online, why buy a reference book? I think this one is worth having because it has great illustrations that you just can't find anywhere else. You can scan through the pages of this book and feel like you have a bit of a grip on world history.
Making History a Journey.......2004-08-12
The DK World History Atlas brings the DK uniformity of style and lots of helpful illustrations to something that's more than a collection of maps. I really use this book frequently and find it well-organized and indexed. The companion to this book is the DK Timelines of History. The only complaint is one that another reviewer raised. The 20th century is short-changed given the density of boundary-moving events.
The most politically correct atlas of world history.......2003-12-28
The DK Atlas of World History: Mapping the Human Journey is a huge top shelf book. It is divided into two parts: the first gives the reader a global view of history divided into different eras(e.g.the advent of agriculture, trade and first cities, the age of the crusades, etc.), the second describes regional history (North America, South America, Africa, Europe,West Asia, South and South East Asia, Noth and East Asia, Oceania, the Arctic and Antarctica). In both parts you will find numerous time lines with the important dates, small color illustrations and short paragraphs about the events covered. At the end of the book there is a subject index and glossary and an index with all the place names shown on the maps. Finally there is a two page bibliography.
There is no question that this is a very beautiful book with pleasant pastel colors, pleasant, glossy paper and maps of different sizes and seen under different angles, which avoids monotony.
Having said that, it is also clear for an attentive reader that the editor has been at pains to be absolutely politically correct, which means:
-ostentatious use of BCE and CE instead of AD and BC
-gross neglect of Christianity: whereas the spread of Islam is worth a double page with big maps in both sections of the Atlas, there is not a single chapter or map about the spread or history of Christianity, which is amazing, considering its importance for the "human journey". In the index, Jesus is nonchalantly called "the inspiration of the Christian religion" (is it an abstract character, one wonders), crucified as a "troublemaker in 29 CE". Strangely enough, Buddha and Muhammad are called "founders" of their respective religions, which is quite true but why deny the title to Christ?
The entry for "Christianity" is also enlightening: here we are told that the early Christian faith, which is decribed as an "offshoot of Judaism", split from the very beginning into "many sects". Never mind the same happened to Islam, there is no mention of any heresies or infighting inside that religion at the corresponding entry.
I also could not find a single time line showing the birth or death of Jesus and other great Christians like Paul and Peter.
-neglect of European history: although European history is the best documented, in this atlas it is treated on the same level as Africa or Australia, which means that at least a dozen chapters and scores of maps are missing for the serious student of history.
Being anti-Christian and anti-European are, as some have rightly said, the last acceptable prejudices.
DK hits another home run...like they always do........2003-05-04
DK hits another home run. Measuring 15 x 11 inches, his is one of the most beautiful Atlas books ever printed. DK, of course, produces books that are beautiful to look at, and read, and enjoy over and over again. This Atlas is no exception. It is academically correct, with beautiful photos, maps, and drawings, and makes the "dull study of human history" come alive in a fun and relatively easy way. If students in schools had this book, it would enliven their minds and make them understand world development and history. It would help them connect to the world as it is today, and help them understand why it got this way. It is too bad most students will not have access to this book, thereby making school another dull place to sit around and get bored with. This book is worth buying, no matter what grade, or age bracket, you are in. DK does it again with a great book for all of us.

Book Description
The giant panda is threatened with extinction. Only about a thousand survive in the wild in China, about half of them protected in reserves. In an effort to save this remarkable species, the government of China and the World Wildlife Fund began cooperative research in 1980. The Giant Pandas of Wolong is not only the first report of this joint venture but also the first detailed account of the panda's natural history. It describes the environment, distribution, life cycle, and daily and seasonal activities of pandas in the wild.
Although giant pandas have few natural enemies, the periodic die-off of bamboo, their main food, threatens their survival. In order to understand the panda's vital link to bamboo, the research team has explored many aspects of the animal's life, collecting information on both wild and captive pandas. Though a herbivore, the panda retains the simple digestive tract of a carnivore. Unable to digest cellulose in plants, it receives relatively little nutrition from the bamboo it eats. As a result, it must eat many kilograms of bamboo each day, foraging for fourteen hours or more throughout a day and night.
Known to the Chinese for several thousand years as daxiongmao, "large bear-cat," the giant panda has defied easy classification. The authors review anatomical, biochemical, behavioral, and paleontological evidence, concluding that the animal is neither bear nor raccoon but belongs in a separate family, perhaps with the small red panda.
The giant panda has captured the imagination of the public more than any other animal. By presenting their groundbreaking and crucial research to the public, the authors of The Giant Pandas of Wolong hope to spur further research and action that will help this precious animal survive.

Customer Reviews:
The best gardening book I own.......2005-12-07
This book has the most readable practicle information on every vegetable, herb or fruit I would ever grow plus many others. It covers some history of origin, varieties, cultivation, propagation, container and garden growing, harvesting & storage as well as uses both medicinal and culinary and also some recipies. I have not come across a more extensive book. My son & daughter both in their early 20's and just starting vege gardening use this as their bible. Well worth owning.
Fun and informative!.......2004-01-16
This book is wonderful! Every section gives you a in-depth overview of the vegetable, herb or fruit; detailing different varieties and how they rank in terms of taste and/or hardiness, how to propagate, grow, maintain, harvest and store. Plus gives tips of typical pests/diseases and how to avoid them. Very helpful are the "companion planting" paragraphs, explaining which plants do best next to each other. And to top it all off, each section includes a "culinary" and "medicinal" section, informing you of the best ways to use your crops once harvested. The pictures are beautiful and the wording is easy to understand and to the point. This is a great book for any gardener's reference shelf. Fun to read cover-to-cover, but set up so that you can dip in and out as you choose.
