Book Description
A beautifully illustrated volume depicting adventures and travels around the world gathering wildlife for zoos and circus. P. T. Barnum was America's greatest showman. This is a fascinating volume which in the back has a section on animal behavior. A highly regarded book of its day originally aimed at young adults when it was published in 1888.
Book Description
The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District currently has 25 preserves (24 of which are already open to the public) containing about 220 miles of traits open to the public. This book serves as a guide to and celebration of these 25 preserves.
Customer Reviews:
a hikers delight.......2007-08-31
Having a group of friends whom I hike with everyday we run out of places to go, well we did before I got this book. It's very comprehensive, including descriptions of each area, map of the area, facilities available and a bit of history. Even the appendix has useful information, with websites for many organizations that can provide addt'l info. I recommend this for anyone in the bay area who wants to explore our beautiful preserves.
A must have.......2006-02-28
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in hiking the hills on the Peninsula. It is very well organized and easy to use. Good for everyone from a casual hiker to serious outdoors enthusiasts.
More Tales, Less Trails, Please.......2005-12-31
I really don't think this should have been written as a guidebook. The idea of including at least one hike from each preserve works well in a few cases, but is almost laughable in others. However, the history and background given on each preserve makes up for this poor guidebooksmanship.
A good example is the Saratoga Gap OSP. Saratoga Gap has only one trail, with virtually no redeeming qualities except that it connects users of Long Ridge OSP and Upper Stevens Creek County Park to the plentiful parking at the summit of Hwy 9. The book recommends that hikers walk down the trail and enjoy the "feeling of seclusion" as cars whiz by 50 yards away on Hwy 35. Yet the section is redeemed by its archaeological and botanical notes. I was also interested to discover that the preserve contains wreckage from a 1959 plane crash, one which my local fire department responded to.
I recommend this book to anyone who uses these preserves, and wishes to know more about the stories behind them.
Local History, Hiking and More!.......2005-04-01
The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District came into existence in 1972 as the result of an overwhelming vote in 1972 to preserve lands from rapid development. In 1976 the "open space" concept was extended into San Mateo county and in the nearly 30 years since the MROSD has come to manage almost 50,000 acres in an area where even small amounts of real estate command a huge premium. Divided among 24 separate "preserves" and managed for low impact recreation, MROSD lands protect much of the natural beauty of the bay area.
An accomplished hiking guide author, Weintraub's book does indeed list and describe one or more trails in each preserve. Distances covered range from short half-mile strolls in Foothill Open Space and Skyline Preserves to a 10+ mile jaunt through Purisima Creek Redwood Preserve. The vast majority of the hikes however are 5 miles or less and are more suitable for a contemplative walk than a strenuous workout. Accompanying the descriptions are some useful map sketches with mileage between key points carefully delineated.
The hikes, however, are not the centerpiece of the book. The real highlights are the local history selections. In addition to relating the history of MPOSD, Weintraub delves into the local history of each preserve. Old photos accompany Weintraub's descriptions of historical logging in the Purisima Creek area, wine making at Picchetti Ranch, and the former stables of Los Tracos Reserve. Better yet, Weintraub's talent as a professional photographer shows in the many beautiful plates and pictures that adorn this book and capture the beauty of the bay area. Finally, the book has numerous interesting sidebars that cover everything from wildlife in the area to the mechanics of trail building and maintenance.
Local history buffs and frequent hikers in the south bay area will certainly want to purchase this book. As a hiking guide it is a little limited. Unlike Weintraub's other guide books from Wilderness Press, this one is more narrowly focused. The reader is compensated by getting more wonderful prose and photos than the traditional guide book format allows. All factors considered, this is a wonderful book.

Excellent!.......2002-04-25
This is an excellent book to start French on. It is easy to understand and the glossary at the back practically provides every single word you would come across in this book. The workbook is also excellent because the answers for self tests are at the back. The sections are divided very well into Vocab, structure, conversation, pronounciation, culture knowledge, different places in the world, and chapter review. Again, it's one of the best books out there for French beginners.
Some thoughts.......2001-03-21
I am a student at Moscow State Pedagogical University. I study twolanguages English and French. When I graduate this University I amplanning to be a French language teacher. I have bought this bookbecause I have a friend who is a middle school student in USA. Heasked me to help him with his French over email. He also told me thatthey are using this book in class/ This was a very interesting andchallenging task for me. So once I have got the book I've startedanalyzing it. In this review I would like to share the results of myWork with... shoppers who might want to purchase this book.
TheEnglish language is used only when it is absolutely necessary. Topicalvocabulary, which is given at the beginning of each lesson, usesvisual support technique to convey the meaning of the new words andphrases. Grammar explanations are very short and clear. There are alot of oral and written and communication activities in each lessonfor students to choose from. Reading & Culture sections givestudents some pieces of information about the culture of the countrywhose language they are studying. The only minus I can see in thisbook is that there is not enough texts for reading in it. I shall notsay that this is the best textbook one can find for teaching French inmiddle schools because I do not have the latest US national curriculumfor this subject but I shall say that I personally like this book andI am pleased to know that my friend is using it in his study process.
A useful tool for those learning French.......2000-10-16
In my French 1 Class, we used this book and its companion workbook. I found it to be very useful, and an enhancement to my learning experience. I think that --by far-- the most useful feature of Bienvenue! are the French-English and English-French indices in the back. If you weren't completely sure what something said, it was easy as tourte to look it up.
Excellent start for beginning French students........2000-09-13
This book is an excellent start for beginners of the French language. The vocabulary lists relate to the same topic and grammer is explained in detail with many excersises. I used this book when I took French 2 years ago. I highly recommend this book.

This charming memoir of the author's life in Paris with the little stray, half-starved beagle she rescued and nurtured is now once again available.
Customer Reviews:
Lauren's Story: An American Dog in Paris .......2007-08-23
Yes, it was cute...but I felt like I was reading a rather bland, repetitive diary. Yes, if you love dogs, there's a lot to relate to here. A bit of salvation in the epilogue...for a woman who loved animals so much, I was a bit surprised it took her so long to reach a vegetarian way of life, but at least she got there!
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE BETWEEN LAUREN AND HER OWNER.......2007-02-28
This is a wonderful life between a beagle named Lauren and her owner who spent every part of every day together. This is a love story! The love between a beagle and it's owner. Some love stories are not even this close to real love.
I felt like I was there with them with every word that I read. I longed for more when I realized I was on the last page. BRAVO for LAUREN to be loved so dearly By Kay and For Kay to be loved so dearly by Lauren.
Best Dog Book Out There.......2006-09-03
Kay's deep love for Lauren - and all animals - includes the necessary ingredients of joy and humor. There are moments throughout the book, especially toward the end when Lauren begins to fall ill, that you, the reader, will hold your breath for too long until the crisis is resolved. And, equally, there are moments of such hilarity, that you will stop breathing simply because you are laughing so hard. Lauren's Story literally has it all: heartbreak, despair, courage, joy and always, love. You definitely want to own this book, and buy it for everyone you know.
Lauren's Story, An American Dog in Paris.......2006-04-04
This is a lovely story about a woman's love for her dog and the love she felt in return. The reader will also enjoy the genuiness of a single woman living -- and dining -- in Paris, a city that seems more tolerant of dogs in its cafes than it is toddlers. It is a great book for anyone who is an animal lover, especially those who are self-proclaimed dog nuts. Others need not apply.
Dog days in Paris.......2006-03-15
I read LAUREN"S STORY:AN AMERICAN DOG IN PARIS, by Kay Pfaltz in one night. I couldn't put it down despite the awful day I had had at work! Lauren and Kay and their adventures helped me forget all the stress and enjoy a romp through Paris. It's not often that a book can get us to laugh out loud and shed a few tears. This is a great book for all dog or travel lovers.

Customer Reviews:
No Vegetables what a bummer.......2004-02-09
Do not purchase this book if you are looking for advice on starting vegetables, because even though veggies are annuals that bloom, they are not covered in this guide. If you prefer to reference your plants by the common names (e.g. Lilly of the Valley - not Convallaria) or a color photo, then this book will be hard to use, because the plants are ordered by their taxanomic/latin names and all of the drawings are black and white sketches.
If you are able to find the plant that you are looking for, then the propogation/seed starting information is pretty good.
Bottomline, probably not the best book if you are just beginnig to experiment with the hobby of growing your annuals from seed.
Good on the seed, but not on the bloom.......2002-04-09
I have been planting flowers from seed in my home for almost 5 years now. Last year I had over 1400 seedlings on multi-level shelves under flourescent and natural light in my dining room. (Boy do I need a greenhouse!) So this book was not a lot of new information to me. A lot of what is listed can be found on the back of a seed packet, but it's not practical to sit on the floor of my favorite garden supply store and read every seed package for suggestions before I buy it. (This is important, because I'm not interested in refrigerating my seeds 3 weeks before I plant them or doing other such preparations required for some seeds.) One major thing missing from this book was photography. There were drawings, but I'm sorry to say that they were mostly a way of breaking up the monotony of the text rather than a reference tool. On the good side, this book did an excellent job of providing the proper germination environment, and each plant had a quick reference in a shaded box that listed the type of plant (annual, perennial, etc), its hardiness zone, and its flowering season. This allowed me to quickly eliminate the plants that were inappropriate for my zone. The regular index wasn't very useful, but one wonderful addition was an index of the common & latin names. I refer to this when looking at some of my books that include the full color photography I was missing. (Almost makes up for it....almost!) Of course, there is the standard hardiness zone map, but they also added a map each for the probable first and last frost dates. (Nice!) Also included was a directory of seed companies and their addresses. All in all, this book does a good job of covering the seed part, but a poor job of covering the bloom part.
Indispensible.......2002-02-20
I am a plant propagator, both at work and at home, and I have access to all the seed starting handbooks. This is the one I turn to the most often. It's comprehensive and easy to use. In fact, if it included vegetables, it could pretty much stand alone. The only thing that would make it a little better would be illustrations of the seedlings.
Best reference on seed starting.......2001-05-08
This is a great reference book for gardeners who are interested in starting plants from seed rather than buying the same old stuff from their local garden centers each year. This best thing about this book is that it rates each plant on its degree of difficulty when it comes to growing that plant from seed. Unlike the seed catalogs which imply that all plants are easy to grow from seed, this book breaks it down into detailed instructions as to how to get the seeds to germinate and what conditions they require once germination takes place. It is a great reference when browsing through the seed catalogs as to which plants are worth trying to start from seed and those whose needs may be way too much time, money or environmentally demanding to even bother with.
Invaluable reference guide!.......2000-01-17
This is an indispensable book for the home seed-starter. I teach plant propagation classes in addition to starting a thousand seedlings in my basement every year and this is the book I recommend. An encyclopedic format with plant-by-plant listings of both indoor and outdoor sowing requirements, transplanting and care information, plus line drawings of each plant make this an invaluable reference guide!
