Watch disasters on the news with confidence if you have read How to Survive Anything, Anywhere. This is a book jammed with stuff you should have learned at Outward Bound if you had gone to Outward Bound, or Girl Scout/Boy Scout training camps, and a few occasional articles in various magazines under "My arm was eaten off by a grizzly until I sprayed PAM in it's eyes." And why did you have PAM on a camping trip? Well, this book will prepare you far, far better than any magazine article. And, yes, this book includes dealing with urban terror events. I gave this book as a Christmas gift and then the recipent was so intrigued they ignored me for the next couple of hours. Excellent gift. Now I want my own copy.

Introducing How to Survive Anything, Anywhere (edited by Chris McNab). Self defence, finding food, signalling, extreme weather, first aid, water saftey... This book has everything.
I really recommend it for writers who are writing fantasy, action/adventure, or really in any genre that might need some of the skills used in this book.
Even if you aren't going to put your characters through the tough situations described in this book, it could serve as something to flick through when looking for inspiration. I do that sometimes when I'm trying to think of a unique place to set my fantasy novel in. The story I am currently writting is set in a desert. This book describes the climate, shows the desert regions on Earth, shows me how to find water, what clothing is optimal to wear in the desert, edible desert plants, how to catch rabits, the dangers in the desert, health, navigation and movement, how to make shelters.... Very helpful stuff!! Every page is illustrated with clear pictures that make the book easier to read.

Grammar by Diagram is a book designed for use as a textbook at the college or advanced high school level, or as a book for the educated general reader who wishes to improve grammatical understanding and skill. Organized into thirteen chapters and complete with answers for all exercises, the text begins with the traditional eight parts of speech and moves on to ten basic sentence patterns. Making use of traditional sentence diagramming, the book proceeds to explain how the ten basic sentence patterns can be expanded into compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, and how verbals (infinitives, gerunds, and participles) can provide further versatility.
Chapters dealing with the structure of the English language and diagrams to illustrate that structure are interspersed with chapters dealing with usage. The text addresses the most frequent usage errors by explaining how to distinguish between adjectives and adverbs; how to avoid problems of pronoun case, agreement, and consistency; how to ensure that verbs will agree with their subjects and will be appropriate in terms of tense, aspect, voice, and mood; and how to phrase sentences to avoid errors in parallelism or placement of modifiers. The concluding chapters deal with punctuation, capitalization, and the use of structures such as the cleft sentence, the sentence appositive, and the nominative absolute.

Clear, comprehensive, correct grammar/diagramming textbook for not much money.......2007-04-28
This thick, spiral bound volume on high grade paper is structured like a textbook, right down to the Times Roman typeface. Sixteen chapters cover the eight parts of speech, complex / compound sentences, punctuation, common errors in grammar, conjugations, and even additional exercises for which no answers are provided. Lessons have questions with room for answers on the page. Solutions are in the back of the book.
Each chapter is logically laid out. The "Usage Problems Associated with Verbs and Verbals" chapter, for example, covers: "the subjunctive mood and three pairs of commonly misused verbs, ... dangling verbals and elliptical clauses...[and] parallelism [which] requires a clear understanding of all the grammatical structures in this text." Doesn't that sound fun?
This textbook is wonderful for testing your grammar knowledge, or for home-schooling your kids. 6th grade advanced placement level and beyond.
The book revived memories of white chalk on slate blackboards and lessons from nuns in black habits -- a real treat!

Greatly Disappointing.......2006-01-16
For all the raving about this book, I found it disappointing. It has no oomph, no strong examples, and it's not much fun to work with. There are other books out there that I believe are more engaging and useful, and certainly better teaching tools, such as "Grammar & Diagramming Sentences" by Nan DeVincent Hayes, and "Rex Barks," by Phyllis Davenport, or "Diagramming: The Key to Understanding." I think students--whether in school or homeschooled--would be better off with Dr. Devincent Hayes' easy to use guide.
Almost thrilling.......2006-01-13
Even if I wasn't a homeschooling mom having to teach my daughters grammar I hope I still would have discovered this treasure. The neatness of the grammatical system of the English language is what shines, but Vitto's sparse and accurate text inists on the readers enthusiasm. Fun.

I attended parochial grade school and diagramming was a significant part of my grammar education. I don't remember if I loved it or hated it, but I learned grammar. Sometime in the spring I saw a reference to this book. I teach ESL Level 2 of 6 and thought it might offer a more visual approach. I began working my way through the book. Okay, I must have liked diagramming (I like puzzles) because I spent long hours working my way through the book, diagramming the sentences and having repeated light bulb moments about the patterns and structure of English. I had no idea that 'yes' and 'no' were adverbs, but now I know and it makes sense. I am enthused at how my students have taken to this approach.

This book serves as an excellent reference for Victorian furniture and is a great buying aid due to the large number of photographs with captions that identify the maker. Includes profiles of many of the famous makers such as John Henry Belter and J & JW Meeks.

A Tiny Tea Treasure.......2000-08-20
Diminutive in size, but not conent, this is a great gift for your garden lover friend or for your own coffee table. Ann Lovejoy walks you through five different tea gardens with colorful pictures to draw you into her world and prose that is easy to read, while being informative. She gives you specifics on design elements to consider, plantings that are proper for the style, and how to correctly harvest your bounty; all the while weaving in bits of history, anecdotes and personal ruminations to make it just chatty enough to be fun. She adds some herbal tea recipes at the end, but if you are looking for diagrams and plant by numbers, this is not the book for you. Her intent seems to be to plant seeds to stir your own imagination and I think she's succeeded.

Flavius Josephus is without a doubt the most important witness to ancient Judaism from the close of the biblical period to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple in 70 CE. His four surviving works in thirty Greek volumes are widely excerpted for historical purposes, but still not often read in their literary and historical contexts. This project aims to assist every serious reader of Josephus by providing a new literal translation, along with a commentary suggesting literary and historical connections.

Im very happy with this book overall. I actually used it in my preparation for my Quark XPress Expert Certificaton exam. It saved me on a few occasions during the exam as well (open book). I highly recommend this book for all levels of users as it has quick and efficient tricks and techniques.
QXP 7.......2007-04-12
I have always liked the QuickStart Guides because I learn visually and appreciated having them show what the menu, screen and final result should look like. However, while this book does show the new features and there are many, I was extremely disappointed in that they didn't review the powerful new Web layout features that were stressed at MacWorld and on Quarkk's web site. Here, they refer to an earlier book acting as if nothing different has happened. It has and someone, somewhere needs to write a book on just this feature.
Quark showed us in their MacWorld booth the ease of creating both a print and web page at the same time, in fact dragging items from one to the other. For someone who struggles with Dreamweaver, this was web design heaven. Quark does all the heavy lifting and while their own book is good, it hardly begins to show what can be
done.

EXCELLENT reference book. Material is presentedly lucidly, without the superfluous details. The extra visual guides facilitate the learning process extremely well. If you are looking for a book that covers the fundamentals (including flowing text and styling sheets), I HIGHLY recommend this visual quick guide book.
After all, who wants to read a verbose material that never seems to address your questions?

Those of us who communicate in spoken English sometimes despair of technical manuals written by those who don't. This is true even for those of us who are quite literate in computer-speak. This Vistual Quickstart Guide to QuarkXPress 6 is a wonderful exception. Quark is a highly intuitive program that makes sense once one grasps the basics, and I found this an excellent reference guide to learning this powerful program. However, I found it worked best if I was at my computer exploring the areas being discussed in the text. What was most helpful to me were the screen illustrations.

Reading this book in order to learn QuarkXpress is akin to reading the dictionary cover to cover in order to learn the English language. Can it be done? Maybe. But it is not recommended.
This book may be useful as a detailed reference guide on a given subject but it should not be used to learn Quark. After attempting to read this book cover to cover for 70+ pages I had to put it down and find another quick start book to learn Quark.

I have read a couple of the Visual Quick Start books by these authors and find them to be readable and concise.
The way the material is portrayed is precise, and conveys the general idea of the task to be accomplished with a minimum of extraneous information.
Highly recommended.
The only downside is that there is not example material included with the books.

I'll stay away from long reviews. If you have used Elaine Weinman's books before, you know to expect a first-class guide. If you haven't, put down the ... bible and go for this one. I taught myself Quark 4 from one of her books and these are invaluable references.
