Book Description
True stories about the furry, hairy, wooly and feathered animals who lived at Lochbur, the home of the author, a sequel somewhat to A Horse in Your House. Some are happy, others sad, other educational or surprising - all worth reading about.

Entertaining; Hurmorous way of writing.......2005-02-15
This book is a really great read if you want to get a feel for Lillian Gilbreth's personality (which is a hurmorous, optimistic personality)or if you want to learn about her family life. But if you're writing a term paper, like I am, and trying just to get facts about her life and not cute stories about the children getting their tonsils out, then this is not the book for you. This is an interesting book, and I would recommend it, just not for the facts it gives you.
Shedding light on an Oakland girlhood.......2003-12-31
As a city of Oakland resident, interested in 19th century life there, I was very happy to come across this book and read Mrs Gilbreth's childhood memories, visiting Lake Merritt, spending time with cousins, visiting her well to do grandfather at his grand estate (he is known as Oakland's first millionaire). I intend to share it with others I know who share an interest in Oakland's early history.
Excellent for Gilbreth researchers; not for entertainment.......2003-05-15
While I agree with Ms. Collins' assessment of this book, and realize it is Mrs. Gilbreth's unedited writings, I found the book to be only a rather dry collection of memories. I guess I hoped to find another "Cheaper by the Dozen" or "Belles on Their Toes" for entertainment, which is a rather unfair expectation. Mrs. Gilbreth does not write to entertain. Her writing style is completely unadorned by either humor or color; she states facts alone (Frank and Ernestine must have inherited their father's humor).
What did irritate me is her attitude toward her daughter, Mary. Perhaps not well-known, this attitude was mentioned in "Time Out For Happiness." The Gilbreths buried their understandably overwhelming grief for Mary and never spoke of her again. This book confirms that fact. Nowhere is Mary mentioned after her death. Mrs. Gilbreth spoke of Mary as part of her husband's 'project' and not a living, breathing child, whose brief life should have been celebrated, not mourned. She says the services of a psychiatrist would have 'adjusted' the situation, 'but it was not adjusted, and it left a permanent scar.' As much money as they apparently had, why they did not seek psychiatric help in the aftermath is beyond me. I was overjoyed to see a picture of Mary; in fact, the pictures throughout the book are fascinating. Mrs. Gilbreth was a wonderful woman, who contributed greatly to humanity, and should be so honored. But she wasn't a writer.
An insightful reminisence.......1999-01-18
After reading "Cheaper by the Dozen", "Belles on their Toes", and "I'm a Lucky Guy", this book filled in the essential details for throughly understaning the Gilbreth lifestyle. The aforementioned children's books provoked my interest, leading me to seek further information on this remarkable family. This book, aimed at the adult level, depicts in acute detail Dr. Lillian Gilbreth's family history, childhood, education, and motion study work. Exciting recolletions of work and travel fill this volume, which is entrancing form cover to cover. The style in which this book was written provokes thoughts of listening to a warm elderly woman, carefully sharing how a shy child became a "pioneer" in women's work, and a marvel in her day. There are numerous typographical and grammatical errors in the text, which are pardonable if the reader considers that these are the actual written words of Dr. Lillian Gilbreth, apparently unedited. The only other disappointment is that this manuscript was unpublished for so many decades that it has not been updated. It does not elaborate on her lasting contributions to industrial engineering today, nor does it reveal which of her children are still surviving. However, there are many useful addresses and contacts mentioned that would provide some update on the issues of industrial engineering. I would recommed this book to anyone interested in the life and work of Lillian Gilbreth or her field, as she should be an inspirational role model for all young women.

Book Description
Here are innovative ways to bring out an aquarium's natural beauty and make it the centerpiece of the home. At the heart of this volume are detailed instructions for creating thirty different stunning aquarium design themes. For instance, the "Transparent" theme uses glass beads instead of gravel, incorporates bottles of different shapes as fish shelters, and suggests stocking the tank with semi-transparent glassfish and glow light tetras. Other decorative schemes include a "Zen Garden," a "Rocky Mountain" look, a tropical jungle-like "Color Frenzy" theme, and others. More than 200 full-color illustrations include photos of finished aquariums, detail photos of fish and plants, and diagrams of the aquarium plans. General advice includes basic instructions on correct heating, lighting, filtration, and airflow features. Live plants are also discussed, both as ornamental features and retreats for the fish.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on fish in the world ever... volume 2.......2004-08-27
Well, Matthew Christian what can i say... some of your critics (envy's a horrible thing) claim that you're nothing but a fish murdering so and so, i strongly disagree because as you rightly say in your superbly detailed magnum opus does a fish really want to die in a bland fish tank at least if it goes it goes in style baby.
I was so engrossed by your work, i couldn't put it down.
My only complaint was the lack of photos of the author, i feel it would have added more depth to the books feel. Maybe it's something you can add to your next spectacular fish book.
I have told my only friend and we are in awe of your talent.
PS, when we googled your name we found your personal website- we are your biggest fans.
we love you,
if you are in Miami, please give us a shout as we would love to accomodate you in any way possible.
We await with baited (get it) breath for your no doubt fab project
OBNOXIOUS Suggestions, INACCURATE and INHUMANE!.......2002-09-10
This is one of the WORST books I've read on fish keeping. This book offers recipe style layouts for plants, rocks and fish. On page 40, author suggests using 150 cardinal tetras for a "medium-sized" tank. What is a medium sized tank to you? 30, 40, 50, 60 gallons? Well, if you are going to house 150 tetra, you'd almost need 150 GALLON if you use the 1" fish/gallong rule. I don't know about you, but 150 gallon tank is not "medium" sized in my mind!!! On page 122, author tells you to use 30 spotted scats in a medium-sized tank. These fish can grow to be 12" each. You'd need a 360 gallon tank to house all the adults. This book does not take into consideration the adult size fish. If you are new to fish keeping, RUN from this book like it's on FIRE! This book forsakes fashion before function in the worst manner. It would be INHUMANE to use ANY of these suggestions. Overcrowding fish can only lead to stress which can result in disease, stunted growth and possibly death.
Great for aquarium design ideas.......2002-05-01
This book is great for aquarium design ideas. It's got beautiful pictures too. I must say though that this book is probably best for people who have had some experience with aquariums. But, wow, you can get a lot of inspiration from this book. There are ideas in this book that I never would have thought of. And then there are some ideas that I would never do. But all in all, I think this is a great book.
Original, Imaginative, but Some Dangerous Ideas Too.......2001-10-01
I gave this book 4 stars to reflect the authors imaginative approach and his originality. There are some truly beautiful aquariums represented in this book.
The dangerous ideas all fall under the category of placing unsafe (for the fish) items in the tank. The author glosses over the precautions which must be taken for many of the items, such as metal objects and sedimentary rocks.
However, I was truly inspired by the fossil aquarium design, and have created an improved version myself. I DID have to coat the limestone fossil plates with aquarium-safe marine epoxy, but the results were spectacular.
Disgusting.......2001-06-06
I saw this book at a local book store. The cover made me think it would be photos of beautifully decorated natural aquariums. Instead, I was disgusted to find most of the decorative themes could best be described as industrial. One suggested setup had a tank with eggbeaters stuck into the gravel, instead of plants! Others are just as attrocious. If you want a book about aquariums with style, buy any of Amano's _Nature Aquarium World_ series.

Great Series .......2007-10-05
Highly recommended for any serious about mycology. This series is key to understanding mushrooms on a higher level.
Book Description
Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, internet information for each listing, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. A strong believer in eco-tourism, Harris guides travelers to the natural and cultural attractions that have made New Mexico world-renowned, while helping readers understand how to both enjoy and preserve them. Complete details on campgrounds, hiking trails, biking paths, ski resorts, and whitewater runs are included. Hidden New Mexico offers reviews of locally run hotels and recommendations of over sixty restaurants serving Mexican, new Mexican, and Nouveau Southwestern cuisine, as well as information on cooking classes where visitors can learn to make their own hot and spicy favorites. With eight pages of full-color maps, this is the perfect insider's guide for visitors from near or far.

Frommers Took the Best Ideas.......2005-06-08
This is probably a good book, but if you buy the Frommers Guide to Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque you get the same "hidden" details and more accurate reviews. Brought this book on my vacation and maybe got two bits of interesting info from it once after I got there.
A great travel book on New Mexico.......2001-03-20
We live in New Mexico, and every holiday or free weekend we use this guide to lead us to new exciting and beautiful places. This book is the perfect travel companion for anyone interested in smaller, off the beaten path places. This book led us to discover Las Vegas, NM, a (yet) not so touristy place unlike Taos or Sante Fe. Thanks to this guide, we enjoyed the free road side Hot Springs located in a pristine alpine valley, and delicious restaurants that put the more known places to shame. It has small eateries and interesting museums, parks like the little known Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument with thousands of drawings, on the way from Socorro to Alamogordo. Yet again, this is a place not mentioned in other tourist maps or books. I would recommend for anyone really interested in traveling through New Mexico to also have DeLorme Topographic Map of New Mexico with them for references and the smaller roads. The general RandMcNally or AAA maps just don't cut it. Those topo maps are only about 16 dollars and will work great with the Hidden New Mexico book or any travelguide. Check out Chaco Canyon National Monument as well, and stay in El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, you will not believe your eyes! That was also a tip from the Hidden New Mexico book. Enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation (I am biased, I know)!
Doesn't shed much light.......1999-12-23
This book gives virtually no driving directions or driving times - an email query to the publisher was not acknowledged. It claims that the only way to fly in is to Albuquerque - in fact, United flies to Santa Fe, as I discovered while boarding my plane to Albuquerque - giving me an extra hour's drive coming and going. The maps are inadequate at best - few of the attractions/lodgings mentioned are shown. Hotel listings are incomplete, and biased toward the high end. Admission fees to attractions - often as high as $10/person - are not given. Many sights are mentioned (Anasazi cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde) without a description, but are not in the index. No chart of annual temperatures was given - that I could see - I found out the hard way that it gets very, very cold in the winter. In short, using this book to plan and travel was an extremely frustrating experience.

Customer Reviews:
four paws for me.......2000-03-15
This book isn't really meant for pet owners, but for those interested in biology, its a good resource. Despite a fairly thorough review of what's known about ferret bio, its decidedly lacking in some areas. One example is the coverage of vision, which is so small it seems a mere afterthought. We're not even treated with a cross-section of the ferret eye, nor any kind of detailed analysis of rod/cone density, optic nerve cross section, and how these might influence visual resolution. Each chapter, however, does include a list of references.
I'll give five paws.......1999-05-15
this book is a must for caring ferret owners, especially for those who live in a region where medical information about these animals are not so readily available.
An excellent resource for technical ferret information........1998-07-11
Whilst this book isn't for every ferret owner, it is certainly a signifcant reference for veterinarians, animal technicians, biliogists or the really serious ferret owner. With indepth articles on certain topics (theres a massive section on neurology) most aspects of ferrets biology and diseases are covered in this text. Although the information is becoming a little dated, an update to the text is due out soon. A worthwhile read for anyone who has the time and patience to study it.
excellent resource.......1996-12-01
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who would like to learn about the biology of ferrets. There are lots of pictures, both illitrations and photographs of the interal workings of the ferret. It's a great way for anyone interested in ferrets to learn how they work. This book isn't a large one with 330 pages of text and illitration, but the information that it contains is seeping out it's binding. It is very extensive covering everything from ferreting to breeding and the reproductive cycle to common and not so common diseases. With illistrations showing you exactly what everything looks like. This is something every ferret owner should have, and never be without

Book Description
At 10,000 feet, the Eastern Ridges (Cerros Orientales) of the city Bogota are a dominant feature of the city's landscape. These mountains are an integral part of the public space of the city and influence its culture as directly as any river or ocean shoreline. This book presents them in a new way, one that recognizes their remarkable natural features and appreciates their enormous ecological potential. On foot, and at times from the air, it allows us to enter into a world that conserves a remarkable amount of High Andean tropical vegetation and wildlife within an urban area of 7 million. This book aims to encourage a much-needed reappraisal of these ridges, regarded as sacred by the indigenous Muisca society, and still a natural wonder for visitors and the residents of Bogota.

Book Description
In this collection of essays woven with poems and folklore, Judith Ortiz Cofer tells the story of how she became a poet and writer and explores her love of words, her discovery of the magic of language, and her struggle to carve out time to practice her art.
A native of Puerto Rico, Cofer came to the mainland as a child. Torn between two cultures and two languages, she learned early the power of words and how to wield them. She discovered her love for the subtleties, sounds, and rhythms of the written word when a Roman Catholic nun and teacher bent on changing traditions for the better gave her books of high literature to read, some of which were forbidden by the church. Later, as an adult, demands from her family and her profession made it difficult for Cofer to find time to devote to her art, but her need and determination to express herself led to solutions that can help all artists challenged with the limits of time. Cofer recalls the family cuentos, or stories, that inspire her and shows how they speak to all artists, all women, all people. She encourages her readers to insist on the right to be themselves and to pursue their passions.
A book that entertains, instructs, and enthralls, Woman in Front of the Sun will be invaluable to students of poetry and creative nonfiction and will be a staple in every creative writing classroom as well as an inspiration to all those who write.
Customer Reviews:
Summoning Females to Macho.......2002-12-03
I have only recently become acquainted with Ortiz-Cofer's splendid honesty and stretching creativity, yet I am overwhelmed with the power that she exudes in "Woman in Front of the Sun". Having read "The Latin Deli", I was ecstatic when I found another collection that calls her memory and lessons learned to dance for the curiosity of her readers. Aside from the traditional definition of the term, Ortiz-Cofer is powerful through the pure simplicity of her accounts of life. In "Woman in Front of the Sun", she places value on what is valuable, she learns through the grades of life, and she exposes her tender realities to those she hopes will appreciate her. She inspires readers to find the innocence in being "Macho", the same value others might call confidence. By opening the pages of this book, you'll find a comfort similar to that of your own thoughts.
You cannot be passive and create........2001-03-31
I stumbled upon this title while reading an issue of The Oxford American and decided to give it a read. What a revelation! I am not familiar with any of Judith Ortiez Cofer's other works, but if this is any indication, I will be reading them all. A collection of essays, poems and folktales, this book blends the author's emergence as a writer with memories of growing up as a Puerto Rican in Patterson, New Jersey. The influences of the island her parents left behind, the Catholic Church as well as the emerging women's movement, combine with a Growing knowledge that the author wants to write. This is not only an autobiography, it is a compelling argument of why she has answered the call to write, and the struggles with self, that she, as a writer has faced. It examines the drive to create, the forces that pull one away from writing, and the quest to have a place of one's own. In clear, lyrical language, she encourages women to seek a life of truth, no matter the route or medium. She reveals some of the writers (a diverse group) that ignited her imagination and passion for writing. "Take what you can use and let the rest rot" is an expression used, and this book is invaluable to women, actually , to anyone who loves to read and who longs to use words to reach others. The best "writing" book I have read in years, and a treasure to keep.
