Fun Book.......2007-05-21

Easy to read book with lots of humor. Very helpful for those who know little about this great sport.

Football for real dummies.......2006-11-11

I had originally gotten the book Football for Dummies to prepare for my grandsons' first season playing Pop Warner football. I found that I was too dumb for Football for Dummies. Nowhere was there an explanation as to whether a team's goal line was the goal they were defending or the one they were heading for. Everything else in the book depends on an understanding of this one principle. Nor could I find an explanation for a safety that made sense to me. Then I saw Snot Bubbles on Amazon. com and thought it was worth a try! Thank G-d for Snot Bubbles! A book that even a grandmother can understand. It gave me a good basic education in football and allowed me to graduate up to Dummies. (I learned things that even my daughter didn't know.) Now I even watch NFL games on TV and can have a fairly educated conversation with my grandsons.

A first year football mom gets a clue with this book.......2006-08-27

The first benefit I received after reading this book was that I was able to immediately identify the position my 5th grader is playing by recalling from memory the diagram of player positions in this book. After a few more reads, I can spot offsides, know who the ineligible receivers are and finally know what clipping means. I even know that offensive tackles don't actually tackle anyone. I'm a little creeped out by all the references to "sexy" football players and "tight ends" (and I'm not talking about the position here), especially since my player is 10 years old, but the author seems to hop back and forth between talking about hot, sweaty, grunting NFL players and sweet, little, innocent youth league players who need praise and encouragment from their parents, so if you can flow with her meandering about, it's not that big of a deal.

A good and useful book overall.

perfect for first-time football moms.......2006-08-21

This book is exactly what it purports to be: a very basic introduction to the game of football, written for women. Before I read it, I knew where the goal posts were and where the 50 yard line was. The book started with these basic concepts, but by page 3 I was learning new information in a simple straight-forward way. It defines several key terms and has an illustrated guide to referee calls. It is also geared for women and, while it could be useful for a male who knows nothing about football, the book is very female-oriented. (comparing the purpose of the game of football to a 90% off sale on cashmere sweaters at Macy's, for example).

This book would be mind-numbingly oversimplified for anyone who already knows anything about football. However, for a mom who has no background in football and wants to take an active part in her son's life, it will enable you to ask intelligent questions and make at least a few intelligent observations.

Bonus: it will fit in a large-sized purse, so you can take it to games.

A Good Primer.......2005-10-14

This is a great little book if you know nothing at all about football. I appreciated the descriptions of each of the positions and cute drawings of ref's to explain all the different calls. I guess I know more about the game than I thought, because I think I'm ready for a more in-depth book. Luckily, the author has a list of suggested further reading.

Since I love to work crossword puzzles, and quite a few have some interesting quotes in them, I thought it would be interesting to see what else was out there. So when I saw this book and another book of quotes, I couldn't resist. This book fits the bill! Some of the quotes are thought provoking, and others are just plain funny. If you like to laugh, or just looking for a good line to share with others, this is the book for you.

This book is a real deal for the money because it's three of the authors quote books all compiled into one - "Up Words for Down Days," "The Change Your Life Quote Book," and "The Lift Your Spirits Quote Book". They are inspiring and funny and categorized by stress, success, failure, love, etc.. And these aren't miscellaneous boring stupid quotes these are brilliant quotes by an incredible range of mostly famous people including Frank Lloyd Wright, Kahil Gibran, Helen Keller, Norman Vincent Peale, Douglas MacArthur, Oprah Winfrey, Bette Davis, George Burns, Pearl Buck, Dale Carnegie, Albert Schweitzer, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bette Midler, Joan Baez, Anne Frank, Margaret Mead, Oral Roberts, Pablo Picasso - the list is phenomenal and seemingly eternal. And by the way, this isn't one of those mostly paper quote books with one quote per page, it's well laid out with an average of 6 quotes per page, 441 pages. Perfect gift for the person who has everything (and I bought one for myself too!)

For better or worse--it depends who you're talking to--Robert Crumb's comics come barreling out of his acid-drenched id. Basic desires, racial stereotypes, and blinding rage are all poured into little panels. While that form of expression's not as novel (or liberating) as it once was, Crumb is still one of the 20th century's true American originals, and Carload O' Comics is an excellent overview of his work.

This funny, grotesque book trots out all the old favories--Mr. Natural, the Snoid, Dale Steinberger Jewish Cowgirl, and of course, Crumb himself. Some strips are, um, gynecological, some are self-indulgent, and others are just plain weird. Crumb's a faithful mirror of his times: he depicts two guys smoking dope while floating down the river in a barrel--when else but the 1960s?

Crumb may not be for kids, but he is funny in a way that a lot of his underground cronies never were. In this age of market studies and focus groups, Crumb oozes authenticity; he's an unrepentant nerdy pervert, but he's just being honest. Bless him for that, at least.

An outstanding sampling of Crumb's early work........2004-01-05

This is the book that turned me onto the brilliant - albeit ideologically controversial - work of underground cartoonist R. Crumb. This compilation first appeared in the mid-seventies and is loaded with Crumb's unique brand of social criticism. Many of the great Crumb characters are featured here (including Mr. Natural, Flakey Foont, and the delightfully impish Mr. Snoid), making this book an ideal choice for the novice Crumb reader as well as the hard-core Crumb enthusiast.

good collection.......2002-08-13

this is a great collection of crumb work from his best art period. classics such as 'my first LSD trip','R.Crumb vs the sisterhood','honeybunch kominsky','dale steinberger the jewish cowgirl' and much more are in this book. it contains 4 mr. natural stories including the 'on the bum again' adventure (adults only) and some of his most disgusting and contreversial comics. if you like R. crumb's early work i suggest this is the book for you.

mediocre Crumb - a disappointment.......2001-11-18

The cover says it's the Creme de la Crumb.
I disagree.

When Crumb is at his best, as in Fritz the Cat,
the Mr. Natural/Flakey Foont tales, or in
_Plunge_Into_The_Depths_Of_Despair_, he's alternately
angry, funny, thought-provoking, and Zen.
If I were emperor of the universe,
his "A Short History of America"
would be given to every kid in school.

This collection misses most of what made Crumb
a sometimes delight, and includes much mediocre
material (pages of tiny panels that don't tell
a story -- of interest to amhphetamine freaks,
I guess).

reading this book you're gonna be dipping into some heavy nostalgia. get into the twisted mind and world of robert crumb and you'll probably never forget the disturbing impression it left on you. this is weirdness at it's peak.

Excellent compilation of classic Crumb........1998-07-08

Stuffed with classic drawings. If buying only one book on Crumb, this is it. It provides an overview of some of his best work. If buying a collection of Crumb, this volume is also a good addition. Will not be a disappointment.

Miller's, most famous for their antiques guides turn their attention to pens and writing equipment, giving some idea of the recognized growth in this area of collecting. This book is intended as a companion for the collector and unlike the companion by Alexander Crum Ewing, this book takes a broader look at the complete range of writing instrument collecting and would be more suited to someone who's tastes run to vintage as well as modern pen collecting.

Covering the complete gamut from early writing instruments to modern limited editions, it covers; pencils, ink, inkwells and other emphemera. This book doesn't waste time with small talk and in common with many companions, facts and details are thrown up at the reader in every sentence.

The run-through from early pens, unusual design pens, pens of the 30's and 40's and with the same attention given to pencils and inkwells it is interesting to note what's included. The usual suspects - 51's, 61's and PFM's all get their deserved mention, but so do more unusual items : Haro Glass nib pens, a 1930's two nibbed Dunhill manufactured by Omas and many other unusual offerings are included.

The book itself introduces a new theme every two pages (this is a mere 70 page book). These are fact filled pages with very good illustrations. The illustration showing the workings of the lever filler, for example, is excellent and the photography in general is very good. However, in common with all Miller's books the real value in buying this book lies in it's pricing guide. Many old items and vintage pens are given a Sterling price as a guide (nominally, a one to one conversion to US$ can be made). These guides can be used intuitively, to make an educated guess at other equipment from the same era, in the same condition.

A factfile is placed in the corner of every second page. They cover more technical or date oriented information, giving the reader a very quick, broad burst of knowledge that would be helpful in an antique store or auction house.

Jam packed with brief historical and pricing information, this really is a buyer's guide and Miller's did well to cover such a broad spectrum in such a short space. Described as an introduction to collecting for the novice, this is more a guide for the mature collector or antiques hunter to wishes to turn his/her attention to writing equipment and is confident in a buying situation. The neophyte collector should look elsewhere and anybody who is looking for an entertaining read will be disappointed.

I appreciate this book on so many levels, it took me back to my own childhood things that I had forgot about. I appreciate someone who is willing to be honest about the racial state of this society. I laughed and felt sad over this book however, most importanly for me I gained some insight into what a White person would face under these circumstances
