Customer Reviews:
Great photographic guide!.......2006-04-05
If you love marsupials, check out this book! It's fairly comprehensive, with photographs for nearly every species.
The only thing I dislike somewhat about this book is it's small, narrow "field guide" format which means that it's a little awkward to actually sit down and study, and many of the photos are too small to be used as anything but a basic visual reference.
Nevertheless, anybody who collects photographic field guides, likes good pictures of animals, or wants to learn more about Australian wildlife should pick up a copy of this book.
Book Description
The New York Yankees. The Boston Red Sox. For a hundred years, no two teams have locked horns as fiercely or as frequently – and no two seasons frame the colossal battle more perfectly than 2003 and 2004. Now, with incredible energy and access, leading sports columnist Mike Vaccaro chronicles the history of the greatest rivalry in sports, and the two stunning American League Championship Series that define a century of baseball.
October 17, 2003: A night no Yankees or Red Sox fan will ever forget. At 12:15 am, bottom of the eleventh inning of game seven of the ALCS, New York third-baseman Aaron Boone launches a ball over Yankee Stadium’s left-field fence. The Yankees win their 39th pennant – and send the perennially vexed Boston Red Sox home . . . again . . . suffering another devastating loss to their longtime nemesis.
October 20, 2004: A year later, an eerie reprise – but this time things are different. After losing three straight to the Yankees, Boston has charged back to win the next three, forcing a decisive game seven. From the start of the game Boston is in control, and by winning this game they march toward their first World Series victory since 1918.
These two explosive years define an extraordinary, epic rivalry – from Mariano Rivera and Roger Clemens to Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling, Derek Jeter and Aaron Boone to David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, from nearly a century of Yankee domination to the undisputed breaking of “The Curse.” With the razor-sharp instincts that have made him a top sports journalist, Mike Vaccaro delves into the history of the rollicking rivalry: a vicious collision in 1903 (between the New York Highlanders and Boston Pilgrims) that draws first blood; the era of Babe Ruth and his legendary trade from the Red Sox to the Yankees, ushering in the notorious Curse; the golden age of DiMaggio and Williams; the unstoppable power of Mantle and Maris; the heart and soul of Fisk and Yastrzemski versus Pinella and Munson; and the modern era of dueling owners, skyrocketing payrolls, and a renewed rivalry that attracts sell-out crowds even to Yankees-Red Sox spring training games.
EMPERORS AND IDIOTS is as lively, fascinating, and raucous as the teams themselves – a must-have volume for any Yankees or Red Sox fan.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me relive some of the baseball seasons that I personally followed.......2007-01-02
Enjoyed listening to EMPERORS AND IDIOTS by Mike Vaccaro,
the story of the 100 year Yankee-Red Sox rivalry . . . it emphasized
the very exciting races in both 2003 and 2004, while also interspersing
tales from 1904, 1919, 1941, 1946, 1949, 1977, and 1978 . . . and
that leads to my only criticism of the book; i.e., it was a bit
choppy . . . personally, I would have preferred a more linear approach.
Yet I quibble . . . what a thrill to relive many of the seasons that I
personally followed . . . (NOT the ones prior to 1977!) . . . and even
then, I enjoyed hearing about DiMaggio and Williams, and the fact
that they almost got traded for each other . . . also, it was fun
getting to again hear names from my not-so-distant past, including
Mantle, Maris, Fisk, Yastremski, Pinella, Munson, Jackson and taking me
through the present era of Martinez, Jeter, Damon, and Rivera.
The CD version had an added bonus: interviews with Bill "Spaceman"
Lee and Yogi Berra, two players who had actually experienced the
rivalry . . . to quote Berra, "You really have to go through it to
know what it was like to go through it."
This book gave me a feel for just that . . . fans of either team--or
sports, in general--will like EMPERORS AND IDIOTS.
Not perfect, but a good read.......2006-07-09
For all the criticism I've heard about this book being yet another in a steady stream of noise about the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry over the past three years, I can confidently say that isn't true; this is a book about the past 102 years in the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. The dramatic story of 2003 and 2004 is interspersed with stories from 1904, 1919, 1941, 1946, 1949, 1977, and 1978, all well told and well researched.
The main negatives I saw in the book were a slightly overdramatic prose style (he uses a lot more words than necessary, and certainly tends to overstate things) and some factual errors (for example: he states the Pedro threatened to hit Posada in the head during Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS, which was an inaccuracy stated by Tim McCarver on the air but later proven inaccurate). Still, for any fan of either side of the rivalry, even those who have been around a while, I recommend this book.
Top Notch Baseball Read.......2005-08-17
This is one of the better books about baseball I've read. Mike Vaccaro is one of the top sports columnists in the country and he makes a very good transition to book author. The interweaving
of history and the present is well done and kept me interested throughout. Recommended for fans of either team. Entertaining and informative.
"An absolute must-read for fans of both".......2005-04-15
Invariably, we had to be bludgeoned with an onslaught of Red Sox-Yankees books after the "Greatest Comeback in Sports History." It seems like a dozen or more books have hit the shelves since The Curse was broken, but most were rushed so hurriedly to market to capitalize on demand, that almost none are anything more than time-worn retreads of stories we already knew - or worse, Red Sox fans/authors whose objectivity is questionable at best. But Vaccaro's book was set in motion long before The Babe rolled over in his grave. It's clearly a book two years in the works, since Aaron "Bleeping" Boone's HR, and its exhaustive detail and historical sweep turn over stones even the most rabid Yanks' and Sox' fans had likely never noticed before. For fans of both teams who have a passionate appreciation for the scope of the greatest rivalry in sports, this is an absolute must-read. Forget sports; this is one of the most thorough and insightful history books I've ever read.
Baseball Book "Blood Feud".......2005-04-15
Author Vaccaro obviously did a careful demographic study and then sat down with his accountants and decided to cash in on the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. He has no emotional investment in either team, just a financial one. No humor, no passion. Try reading BLOOD FEUD instead. It has both - and no pandering to the Big Apple. It is well-researched and very funny. A recent Yankee reviewer of BLOOD FEUD complained "Calling one team "divine" and the other "evil" is a joke." Well, "Duh!" Of course it's a joke and a very clever and funny one, as those who read it will quickly discover! This is a book for Red Sox, Yankee, Mets fans - but mostly for baseball fans who love the game.
Product Description
EMPERORS AND IDIOTS is as lively, fascinating, and raucous as the teams themselves a must-have volume for any Yankees or Red Sox fan.
Book Description
Intentionally brief, this book concentrates on the preparation, practice, and presentation of speeches without getting bogged down by theoretical discussions.
The focus on purpose and audience response, which incorporates consideration of cultural diversity, helps readers identify ways to make their speeches more effective. Highly popular, this book is the best of the short books available on the subject.
For anyone interested in public speaking.
Customer Reviews:
Good Basic Speech Text.......2007-09-01
This text is a good one for basic speech students. It amplifies the rhetorical canons and is straight-forward and clear.
Worked for me!.......2006-02-26
I used this book in class and I was totally satisfied with how well I did. I think it covered the material in a really understandable way. If your class is using this book - be happy!
ehh.......2005-09-26
I never received the book! i had to buy it in the expensive bookstore in my school.
For any type of public speaking.......2004-01-03
I agree with the book description above that this is the best of the short books available on the subject.
It's very thorough for a book this size, and would be good for anyone doing any kind of public speaking, whether in church, in business, in college organizations, before the press, in politics and government, or even in high school debate teams or speech classes.
There are chapters on Audience Analysis; Supporting Your Ideas; Stage Fright; Impromptu Speeches; Nonverbal Communication; Persuasion; Deductive and Inductive Reasoning, and even one on The Job Interview! There is a lot here in one neat little package!
Book Description
Authentic, black-and-white African artwork, adapted from motifs on textiles, masks, jewelry, and other sources, depicts 235 dynamic images, among them stylized lions, fish, birds, totemic figures, abstracts, and border configurations. Selected for their unusual qualities and native characteristics, these expressive designs will be valued by graphic artists, designers, and craftworkers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of Dovers better books.......2007-08-17
After purchasing many Dover clipart books this one has one star over the other African Designs book because it has a CD. The designs are plain and unremarkable. Too many masks that all look pretty much the same. Wanted more designs for crafts and card making. This didn't provide it.
Not What I Hoped It Would Be.......2007-01-09
This book didn't measure up to my expectations, I thought it would have nicer designs and more variety. I haven't looked through it again since the day I bought it. I packed it away along with the other design book I bought from this company.
Book Description
Loaded with 376 exciting, black-and-white images, this treasury of African folk art features a splendid variety of ornaments: chevrons, zigzags, pinwheels, and other geometric designs; birds, snakes, lizards, scorpions, elephants, and other animals; and human and godlike figures, along with horned and skull-shaped masks.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Here's the first reference devoted exclusively to laboratory testing for avian and exotic animals. 31 leading experts thoroughly describe how to select, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests for pet birds, common reptiles, rabbits, and ferrets. They also discuss pathophysiology, where appropriate, to help readers understand what various test results mean.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent information, but very technical.......2007-09-29
This is an excellent book, but is more advanced than I, as an animal rehabber, can use. Our members with a nursing, microbiology background really like it.
very fast sending and very good item.......2006-07-24
I'm very satisfied with my item; I'm very happy to have bought from amazon because it was very fast in sending and the item was very neat
Must Have Reference.......2000-05-16
This is an excellent, excellent reference. It is a "must have" lab guide for anyone who treats birds. It provides state of the art information on Avian Laboratory tests and their interpretation.
It is also very good for as a reference for exotic species. There are a number of other contributers to various sections in this book. They are all well known experts in their field.
In this every changing world, this book provides leading edge information.
Unique resource.......2000-04-09
This book provides a solid reference on common clinicopathological features of Birds, Reptiles, rabbits and ferrets, although the title misleads us to believe that other popular exotic species would be covered. The avian section is pretty comparable to other sources, but the reptile section is very unique to this book. The reptile section could benefit from more specific chapters on more diseases, as opposed to only the "LIVER AND GI" (which is mostly liver), Renal and Reproductive. In order for this info to be useful, one has to use the book after having an index of suspicion of a certain disease process and see if the data fits the book's discussions (as opposed to being able to look up differentials for certain enzyme elevations).
Section 3, on ferrets and rabbits, is also very comparable to other published books. I reccommend this book as an adjunct to others in your private library, but not as the sole source of information on this subject.

Book Description
Yoichi Ohira is a Japanese glass artist who has been living and working in Venice for more than twenty-five years. After years of work combining the deep aesthetic tradition of Japan with the centuries-old techniques of Venetian glass-making, he burst onto the international scene with two highly successful gallery shows and is now regarded as one of the premier glass artists working today. His work is in the collection of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Craft Museum, and he has been exhibited alongside works by Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Carlo Scarpa, Alvar Aalto, and others. This deluxe edition accompanies an exhibit of Ohira's work in the fall of 2002. It includes more than 300 works, 100 of them new. All of the works are reproduced in high-quality prints that vividly illustrate the color and luminosity of his art. Essays by Attilia Dorigato, Jean Luc Olivié, Susanne K. Franz, William Warmus, and Rosa Barovier Mentasti accompany the plates.
Book Description
Updated and revised.
This book is both a valuable reference and a practical how-to guide to hundreds of plant species suited for cultivation beneath a canopy of mature trees. Here is all the information needed to get started: design, plant selection, planting and maintenance. These principles can be applied anywhere in North America in any size garden, from large estate to a cramped city lot.
This revised edition of
The Woodland Garden features new, beautiful color images throughout, a larger format and more text.
An authoritative guide for gardeners and landscape designers, this edition focuses on:
- Designing the woodland garden
- Building the woodland garden
- The canopy, plus a list of woodland trees
- The understory, plus a list of woodland shrubs
- Plants of the woodland floor
- Climbing plants
- Planting, pruning and maintenance
The authors list their favorite plants with detailed descriptions of the best woodland garden performers including lilies and rhododendrons. Practical information is provided for soil characteristics, adapting a property, working with a new site and converting an old garden. There are sections on fragrance, water, rocks, pathways, scale and unity, how to analyze a site and much more.
Helpful tips throughout offer useful advice gleaned from the authors' decades of collective experience: dealing with weeds and pests, preparing the land, watering, mulching and propagation.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough but dull.......2004-05-09
This is an updated version of a book that first appeared in 1999. It contains a great deal of well organized information presented in an attractive format. While much of the information is based on experience in the Pacific Northwest, it has validity for other areas too.
The writers are well-known and respected in the Pacific Northwest. They start by discussing the design of the woodland garden on various sites, and then offer ideas for building and developing the garden. This is followed by a chapter each on the canopy, understory, woodland floor and climbing plants. Each chapter concludes with plant lists. There follows a chapter on planting, pruning and maintenance and a list of the authors' favourite plants. There are pleasant colour photographs, black and white designs for gardens and sketches of rock placements.
The writers are knowledgeable and thorough but the writing tends to be dry and tedious to plough through. Other writers have addressed the topic in a much more readable style. I found no inspiration here - just text book-type info.
Impressions of "The Woodland Garden".......2001-04-05
This book focuses on the design and structure of woodland gardens. Content describes the layers of groundcover, upper story and middle layer. Extensive lists of appropriate plants with zone and cultivation information are provided and are very useful. I found the book a great help in thinking about my shady woodland area, and inspiring in terms of design ideas. The focus is on general principles of woodland design rather than giving diagrams to follow. There are some pictures of plants, but I would have preferred more pictures of general woodland scenes. I have read sections over & over and continue to find it enjoyable and useful.

This book, which covers both Windows and Macintosh versions of QuarkXPress, begins with an introduction to the interface, a review of new features in version 4, and help in setting defaults and preferences and managing QuarkXPress files. Part 2, "Page Layout," teaches you how to draw boxes and lines, apply frames and styles, position items on a page, use Libraries and the Document Layout Palette, and more. Part 3 teaches you how to add and format text, helps you import text files, use an Automatic Text Box, use columns and templates, choose and implement typographic specifications, and use the Kern/Track editor. In Part 4, "Adding Graphics," you create illustrations by using the Bezier tool and applying techniques such as merging and splitting items, tiling, and flipping. Next, you add images by importing them into Picture Boxes and positioning, resizing, and cropping them. You also learn how to color images, change image contrast, create halftone screens, work with clipping paths and alpha channels, create text wraps, place text along a path, work with text-shaped objects, specify paragraph rules, and use initial caps. Part 5, "Color and Output," teaches you how to create and apply color, match and manage color, work with trapping, print documents, prepare documents for a service bureau, and output your work to QuarkImmedia, HTML, and PDF formats. The last part explains advanced features, such as XTensions, XPress Tags, book files, indexes, and lists. There's also a glossary of desktop-publishing and design terms. --Kathleen Caster

See Quark Run.......2001-05-14
Merging shapes works more efficiently than USING QUARKXPRESS 4's Bezier tool to draw complicated shapes. Directly appending colors, dashes & stripes, H&J, list and style sheet settings from previous documents gives consistency and saves time. Hexachrome color prints more vibrant, wider color ranges if the print shop also handles high-fidelity color. These are only a few of the countless valuable explanations and tips from expert Kelly Kordes Anton. She came up with the shortcuts for Steven Bain's FUNDAMENTAL QUARKXPRESS 4, and here is her own encyclopedic help desk. Her superbly written and indexed book consolidates Barbara Assadi et al's QUARKXPRESS 4 FOR DUMMIES, David Blatner's QUARKXPRESS 4 BOOK FOR MACINTOSH & WINDOWS, Galen Gruman's MACWORLD QUARKXPRESS 4 BIBLE, William Harrel's QUARKXPRESS 4 IN DEPTH, and Elaine Weinmann's QUARKXPRESS 4.

Customer Reviews:
Great Learning Tool.......2004-03-03
I'm taking a QuarkXPress class at a local community college and this book is used as our textbook. The exercises and accompanying CD are extemely helpful in getting the uninitiated started in Quark. There are other books that could be as helpful further down the road, but without the interactive experience provided by the CD & tutorials, you'll only be reading about it as opposed to actually doing something. The hands-on approach of this book makes all the difference in the world. When trying to learn a demanding program like Quark, any advantage is welcomed. I found this book to be an excellent learning tool.
eh..................2001-07-14
Using QuarkXPress may not be very much fun in itself, but this book didn't even attempt to rescue me from this gutter I was already in. Occasional errors weren't too distractive, but the method of teaching just didn't work. Many times, I found myself instructed to do something, but after having completed it, I had no idea for what purpose and to what end I had just accomplished.
Another querk I found in this Quark book was that it attempted to cram too much information all at once. The book looks small, but the wealth of information is overdone. I learned a lot of stuff, but I also forgot a lot of it afterwards due to excess information spilling out my ears. If only the author would have slowed down a bit and taken a few hundred more pages to explain important concepts, I may have retained more of what I had learned.
I believe for this book to be more of an asset, more "why" comments after the "do this" comments would have cleared things up a bit.

A Must Read for all Sports Fans.......2005-12-05
I purchased a copy of this book after hearing Mr. Love speak to a crowd of over 300 people. I was engrossed in the book from the start and completed the read on my flight home. It is a definite must read for any athlete or person who enjoys sports and believes that life is more than just a game. It provides a human look at the sports world that is so often overlooked, candy-coated and glorified. The poignancy of this book is driven home when you are priviledged to hear Mr. Love speak, see his conquest over his disability and feel the passion he has for youths.
Stunningly honest story thats too painful to believe..........2001-12-11
It's amazing that a one-time NBA super-star ends up mopping floors, waiting on tables and enduring major abuse and embarrasment while trying to make ends meet...every NBA executive should read this to ensure that League policy does not allow this to happen again. I bought this to hear some inside details on one of my favorite NBA players of all time (I remember in 1974 going out to buy "Pro-Keds" sneakers for my season because that's what Bob Love wore)and came away stunned at what Love went through before re-claiming his life. I was vaguely aware that he'd had hard times post-retirement, but not at this level and this account, quite frankly, makes me admire him more. In brutally "straight-forward" writing he details all the problems that beset him and how his inner-strength and formidable character allowed him to keep his sanity and, ultimately, allowed him to get a semblance of dignity back. You won't get too much basketball detail here (his career takes on surprisingly few pages), but I think that this is Love's intent. This is the success story of a man resurrecting his life from the depths, some of which he helped make (failure to face his stuttering problem) and speaks to a higher level than basketball. My heart truly goes out to him and I'm very glad to hear that he's now doing well. An inspiring read!
The Bob Love Story If it's Gonna Be, It's Up to Me.......2000-06-07
The book was a slow read in the beginning. I feel to much writing was spent on his early childhood and tended to be a bit boring. The sequence of events during that time didn't flow well, seemed as though you were going back and forth.
The middle section, the period of college & pro ball was good reading. I don't like sports but found this section a fast read. My mother is a great sports fan, so many of the names he mentioned I knew. There was very interesting detail in this section. The sequence of events flowed very well.
The last section, was also a slow read. It was a bit boring. Didn't measure up to the mid-section. The statement he made in next to last sentence of the book is questionable. He has quite a few victim statements, example, beatings from his stepfather, teasing about his stuttering, negative relations from his second ex-wife and "Government worker" girlfriend(?). How can he not understand why, his girlfriend blew-up? What is behind the scene that he is not mentioning.
Also, his seventh son Nathaniel was born in 1987 not 1988 as mentioned in the book. What's really interesting is that he mentions all of his kids except his oldest daughter Basha. Why?
