This is a facinating look into lobster fishing as practiced on the Maine Coast and at the animals and their habitat. The edition I read was updated in the 1970s from the original 1960s copy-right. So some of the ideas suggested in the book have been examined and discarded or adopted since; such as conversion from wood to wire cage traps.

A good perspective on being gay in the late 1970s........2006-07-14

This is a very down to earth easy to read book, one that any gay teen could easily understand. This was written in a time before AIDS, though I found it somewhat disturbing that he engaged in sex with other elementery students as a child, that certainly didn't take place on our playgrounds! It's a quick read also, and flows smoothly, and the author has good dialogue with the reader. Full of humor and emotion, I would recommend this book for gay teens to read to realize they are not alone with these feelings.

A fun work of fiction.......2006-02-19

I knew Aaron quite well. Not in 1980, but from about 1985 - 2000. We even lived as roommates together on more than one occasion. Reflections of a Rock Lobster is a great read. It is also mostly a work of fiction. Sure, Aaron did sue for the right to go to his senior prom with a male date. His reasons for doing so - fiction. Aaron was catapulted to prominence when he unknowingly arrived at his prom to TV cameras and the news media. His law suit received an enormous amount of attention and soon Aaron was being asked on to the talk show circuit. He knew a good thing when he saw it. It was then that he became the gay spokesperson people believe him to be. In fact, Aaron's initial motives were only self-serving: he wanted to get back at his high school principal. After years of bailing Aaron out many jams - including drug addiction, shoplifting, prison, etc. I finally said good-bye to Aaron by having him forcibly removed from my home in San Francisco. Aaron wrote an important book. That is for sure. It has touched many people's lives including my own. It is definitely a good read, but please let's get the story "straight".

Where is Aaron Fricke now?.......2000-09-12

This is a great book for both teens and adults who are coming out, along with Best Little Boy in The World. The author of the latter revealed himself to be Andrew Tobias a well-known financial writer, and he wrote a sequal to let us know how things turned out for him. But, I haven't been able to find out what has become of Aaron Fricke. (He hasn't written anything since the book that he wrote with his father in the late 80's). I hope that he is doing well. Does anybody know what has become of him?

A must read for any gay teen - or anybody!.......2000-05-18

The first person I 'came out' to was a great friend, he reccomended this book to me, and it was the most worthwhile book I'd ever read. Anyone who is coming out, has come out, is thinking of coming out, or knows someone who is coming out should read this book. The first person perspective is endearing, and you can really feel for the author.

A helpful book for gay teens.......1999-12-20

When I came out at fourteen my mother bought "Reflections of a Rock Lobster" for me as her way of showing support. This book was very helpful to me at that time in my life. It was well written and kept my interest. The fact that it dealt with feelings and issues many gay teens face made me feel more comfortable to be myself. I would recommend anyone who knows of a gay teen who has just come out and needs support, or any teen for that matter to have them read this book. If you have read this book and liked it I would also recommend "Not Like Other Boys--Growing Up Gay, A Mother and Son Look Back" by Marlene Fanta Shyer, Christopher Shyer.

High quality book by an Exceptional Sifu!.......2005-09-11

I have seen a number of books on Jeet Kune Do, but few that put it in terms so easily understood. I came to the study of Jeet Kune Do with a background of familiarity w/ Wing Chun. Many other books on Jun Fan seem to bear only slightly on the Wing Chun connection. This is understandable as Bruce Lee parted ways with much of that art, but it is at the root of his system, and Sifu Seaman does a wonderful job of showing Jun Fan's connection to Wing Chun principles. I would also say that, having spoken to him on the phone, his spirit of Hing-Dai (Kung Fu brotherhood) is most refreshing in a world of inflated egos. If you seek to understand the path of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, you really only need this book!

Great textbook on Jun Fan Gung Fu.......2005-04-28

I take Jun Fan Gung Fu with an Inosanto teacher, and this book is the perfect textbook for what we do in class. The author does an excellent job of discussing principles, but also techniques. The pictures are clear, and the text only really contains things you need, without extra extrapolations on stuff you don't need to learn. This is an excellent textbook on JKD/Jun Fan.

The best in traditional Jun Fan material.......2005-02-01

Personally, this is one of my favorite books on the subject of Jeet Kune Do. It is different in that it presents the more traditional Jun Fan Gung Fu as opposed to the method of Jeet Kune Do. Not many books do this, as they go right into "what's new" in Jeet Kune Do. Although there is nothing wrong with that, Mr. Seaman shows the reader the value of the original Jun Fan material. He covers basic trapping, Jun Fan kickboxing kicks, boxing, stance movement, etc. Overall, this is a treasured book in my martial arts library, as it is rare in that it shows techniques and ideas that other books gloss over. Just my opinion.

Great Supplementary Literature on JKD.......2004-01-08

I have read most of the Bruce Lee library, small to big. My never-ending search for more knowledge brings me to other authors such as Sifu Seaman who was instructed by Sifu Dan Inosanto (no introduction needed there). Not having any limits is what Sifu Bruce Lee always insisted. Also having now way as "way". Never stop learning. Never stop practicing. That's what I live by. This book is a great addition to any JKD practitioner. Improving the fundamentals of JKD is the core. You move to your own path from there.

Excellent addition to any serious martial artist's library.......2003-04-18

This book is an excellent overview of the basics of Jun Fan Gung Fu, the Gung Fu system developed by the late Bruce Lee, using the concepts and principles of Jeet Kune Do. It is very well organized and well written and everything is very clearly explained and illustrated.

One thing in particular that I really like about this book is that the first two chapters cover Jun Fan's footwork (as in stance, mobility, etc., not kicking), the foundation upon which everything else is built, which makes it an excellent companion to Chris Kent and Tim Tackett's books "Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing" and "Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do: The Textbook" which are also very good, but do not cover stance or footwork very well.

Excellent study guide for any Jun Fan / JKD student.

Fun Dog Fun Book!.......2006-08-27

Audrey Pavia"s book portrays the Labrador as an all around fun loving family dog. If you don't own one after reading this book you will probably want to acquire one. She is very thorough in her chapters on health and training. Her chapter five (Understanding Your Lab) is an excellent and easy to understand study of canine behavior. Her chapters on whether to breed or not to breed your Labrador are very thoughtful. It is a well written,handy manual for a Labrador owner... or would be owner.

Okay book, but not a lot of new information.......2005-07-22

I have got this book along with another yellow lab training book. This is the one I finished first. I am not that amazed of the quality of the content. Of course, you should love your puppy and treat him/her with properly. If not, why would you get one? It has a bunch of "do's" and "don'ts" which may or may help you. I have got some ideas, but me and my puppy also attended a local "puppy kindergarden" which I found fun and beneficial for both of us. My puppy is over 14 wks now, and he sure is growing and handful.

If you are going to get this book, check out the content. How would you do it? You may have to buy it. But it is okay. It is a decent book overall.

Have fun raising yours. We are having fun!

Nice Book On Labrador Retreivers!.......2005-01-21

This is an inexpensive but quite accessible book about training Labs, a no nonsense nuts and bolts primer for the new caretaker of a the best dog breed yet devised by the Heavens; the Labrador Retriever. As someone who shares his house and life with four of God's single most nearly perfect craeature, I can testify as to the accuracy and relevance of all the information in this wonderful compendium. It is a literal treasure trive of data about how to raise and care for your new best friend, and it covers everything from potty training to kennel care.

As a personal note, it is improtant to remember how sensitive Labs are, that one never ever strikes one, and that gently scolding them will get you the reaction you want much more efficiently than would any unjustified corporal punishment. Just remember, friends, there are really no bad dogs; only ignorant and incompetent people trying in vain to train the dogs. What you need to avoid such pitfalls is all here! Enjoy!

Very useful.......2004-02-05

A few months ago I found a puppy lab, and I had NO CLUE as to what to do or how to train him, and I knew I wanted to keep him, so I got this book, and I really went "by the book" with him. It has been very useful. Reading about labs has allowed me to be a lot better parent to him. It has a very good section about training tricks (sit, down, shake), it explains very well what to expect from a lab (they are crazy dogs). It tells you how to deal with his nasty chewing habits, and several other things that you need to know in order to be a good pet owner.

This is a great start for the first time lab owner. Our puppy will not arrive for four more months, but this book helped us prepare and plan for our new arrival.

An Informational Labrador Book.......2002-08-17

This book is very helpful when it comes to learning about and understanding this intelligent breed. This book covers the following subjects: Puppy Care, Adult Care, Feeding and Food, Grooming, Health, Breeding, Showing, the Working Dog, and a special chapter called "The Dog For You", which introduces you to the Labrador breed. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering or already owns a Lab.

A good book.......2000-02-09

I liked most of this book. I have a male chocolate lab and wanted to know more about the breed. It covered every area from showing, to the breed standard to lab behaviors. The only subject I was dissapointed about was the lack of information on breeding a male labrador. I wanted to know more about the basic steps to take when breeding my male lab with a female. For example, when can I breed him? How do I get the word out that I have a male labrador to breed? If you're an owner of a female labrador, this book covered those areas. However, there were only a few lines on breeding a male.

I purchased this book after viewing many. I found that this book had all the essential elements of Labrador care, characteristics and training with a very nice picture illustration. I bought this book for other Labrador (1st and multiple time) owners who also enjoy it. Some things the pictures present may otherwise be difficult to explain. I recommened this book highly to all Labrador lovers.

Precious Moments 2000 Edition.......2000-02-28

This new 2000 edition is a fastastic guide for all Precious Moments collectors. It is concise and contains all the necessary that a Precious Moments fan asks for. However, I am disappointed with the quality of the pictures in the Guide. If you compare this 2000 edition with the 1999 edition, the 1999 edition's pictures were much better in term of the sharpness and the colour quality.

This book is a joy-containing not only the facts about the Medieval herbs and plants-but also charming references to the amazing character of Cadfael.

Cadfael's pictures.......2002-04-04

This is most useful as a guide to Elis Peters' novels. The index of plants is oriented toward the fictional Cadfael and his uses, rather than to mediaval practice.

The pictures are coffee table book quality.

A must for gardeners who are Brother Cadfael fans, or Cadfael fans who are gardeners, but not a serious work.

Not only is this gorgeous books with excellent pictures of plants, it shows a deep insight into Brother Cadfael's herbarium and his respect for plants. I loved the excerpts from the many Brother Cadfael books. I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the layout of Brother Cadfael's garden and perhaps some recipes and potions. Still the authors produced a beautiful book at a reasonable price with the pages crammed with in-depth information on herbs.

Misleading Title.......1999-08-26

I believe that this book is much more of a picture book than anything else. Within the text, it describes Brother Cadfeal more than it does his gardens or how he planned them or used them. This book is nicely done but it is not worth the price if you are looking for a comprehensive reference for how to grow and use herbs. Please look somewhere else. There are many out there which hold better information.

This book was very informitive on the uses of herbs for medicines in the Middle Ages. I happen to be a fan of Cadfael and thought the pictures were wonderful. I had been doing a project on medical herbs in the Middle Ages and it was my best resource.

Black Prisoner of War chronicles the story of James Daly, a young black soldier held captive for more than five years by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese and subsequently accused (and acquitted) of collaboration with the enemy. One of the very few books about the Vietnam War by an African American, Daly's memoir is both a testament to survival and a provocative meditation on the struggle between patriotism and religious conviction.

First published in 1975 as A Hero's Welcome, Daly's memoir had only a brief exposure before it sank from sight. At the time, most Americans simply wanted to forget about the war. But, as Jeff Loeb argues in his introduction, Daly's story is a compelling one that merits a much wider readership.

Raised in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant area, Daly fought to overcome difficult circumstances through hard work and religion. When the Vietnam War intervened, he was denied conscientious objector status, despite his strong pacifist beliefs. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, but only after a black recruiter assured him he would receive a non-combat assignment. Instead, he was sent to fight in Vietnam, where he was denied repeated requests for reassignment. In protest, he refused to load or fire his weapon, even when sent out on patrol.

When his unit was ambushed by the Viet Cong, he began his long ordeal in captivity, first in the jungles of South Vietnam and then in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." As a POW, he was still an outcast: a black "grunt" and pacifist among mostly white air force officers who considered any sort of accommodation treasonable. Such charges were eventually leveled at Daly for joining the so-called Peace Committee and signing a letter condemning American actions in the war. Although Daly's decisions were in keeping with his pacifism and he was later cleared of the charges, he remains a controversial figure for many Vietnam veterans.

Exploring the limits of both accommodation and resistance, Daly's memoir forces us to reassess the POW experience and race relations in Vietnam, as well as the complex relationship between personal belief and public duty.

Switching Sides.......2003-02-20

This book was not worth reading under its 1975 incarnation and is even less so now. All the factual inaccuracies and mis-spellings seem to have survived intact and so has Mr. Daly's boring justification of the unjustifiable, namely why he completely sold out both friends and country while he was a P.O.W. during the Vietnam War.

On one level it's easy enough to empathize with Mr. Daly, an unsophisticated, religious young man, a conscientious objector, who was tricked into joining the army by the promise of a non-combat assignment. Mr. Daly promptly found himself in a rifle company in Vietnam where he was soon taken prisoner and held for several years in the hellish jungle camps run by the Viet Cong, suffering incalculable deprivations and abuse; all American P.O.W.'s did. However, Mr. Daly lost any claim to legitimate conscientious objector status the day he signed a letter written by another member of the infamous "Peace Committee" that asked his Vietnamese captors for the right to join the North Vietnamese Army. He did this not in the jungle but in one of the camps in Hanoi, where he was already currying favor with the NVA by writing and broadcasting anti-American propaganda. In return for these and other actions Mr. Daly and the other members of the PC, always few in number, were accorded special, more lenient treatment. The criminal charges that were brought against Mr. Daly and all other members of the PC after repatriation were dropped when one of their number committed suicide rather than face his imminent trial; none were "acquitted" as the book's jacket states. Rather, Mr. Daly and the others were given a pass on their dishonorable actions in an effort to begin healing the country's wounds from a long and pointless war.

book stands alone for many reasons.......2001-04-06

This book can be rated fairly only as what it is: a very rare narrative from a soldier who had a unique (but not unpredictable) experience. It should be available to all historians of American and Vietnam studies as a view that opens other doors: the events and background that made PFC Daily react as he did. The Army did not well train all soldiers and the 1960's were a very personal journey for all. Daily by his own words was lost before he was captured;lost inside and in society. America let the standard for soldiers slip rather than just this single soldier who was failed by his officer corps and country. I judge a veteran by how he views himself: as a part of a unit better said a family or otherwise. Daily is the failed soldier. I wonder if anything was changed from the first edition? I doubt his exact words were used...........

The entire issue of Officer versus Enlisted POW is truly not well applied in a review of this book and should be studied in other places...3 stars for historical importance and less than one as a reading experience and my regret that the author was not better guided in the book writing as in his military experience.
