Absolutely the Best!!.......2000-10-04
This book is old school and it's obvious that the author really cares. Great photos, great maps and great writing. It was the first (I believe) guidebook for biking written about Moab area and having bought and subsequently tossed all the others, I think it is still the best. We have made the Moab pilgrimage every year for the last eight and this book is the only one worth lugging along.
Out of date, but still helpful for those who know already.......2000-09-13
I used this book for years and had a love/hate relationship with it. It got me lost lots of times, but also turned me onto some great rides. The real negative is that the book is woefully out of date and some of the rides have changed drastically. If you use it in conjunction with a more recent guidebook like Mountain Bike America:Moab then you will indeed have a powerful tool for deciphering Moab.
Best guide book to cycling in Moab.......2000-07-06
Comprehensive and accurate descriptions of all of the most popular rides in Moab and the surrounding area. Great history, geology and insight into the local area. A must for any Moab cycling trip.
Thorough technical description of Moab area trails........2000-05-16
Todd Campbell wrote this book from experience. His details regarding the trails, how to find them, what to watch for, and what to avoid, are excellent. Although written in as if a technical manual, (the lack of down-to-earth humor such as found in Cosmic Ray's books in Arizona) can be overlooked due to quality content. If you can secure both the Moab East and the Moab West topographical maps with the book, you will find the information infinitely more useful. Book contains details such as type of ride, length, difficulty, best seasons, elevation, land agencies, route summary, options, attractions, riding surface, logistics, trailhead access, and mileage log and route description.
Product Description
Descriptions of 40 mountain bike rides, covering 11 different areas of southeastern Utah. Contains over 80 maps and 175 photos of the area. Discussions of geology, hisotry, lore and local environmental dynamics. Includes descriptions of multi-day rides, rides in the mountains and high country of the region and information on rides to avoid.
Book Description
From renowned outdoor writer Jim Fergus comes this collection which represents a kind of extended journey across the country from Colorado to Florida and points beyond. From pheasant hunting at Nebraska's Fort Robinson to bone fishing on the flats of Grand Exuma, Bahamas, these 32 essays, arranged by season, chronicle Fergus's most memorable travels hunting and fishing over a period of 6 years.A book about the natural world and man's place in it, The Sporting Road is also a book about relationships, which for Fergus include old friends, new acquaintances, and his trusted yellow lab, Sweetzer.
Customer Reviews:
Sportsman's Travelogue of USA.......2007-08-09
The adventures of Jime Fergus and his lab Sweetzer as chronicled in this book make me wish I had chosen a much less restricted life style over my 60+ years up to now. The writing creates strong images in my mind's eye that bring the events to life for me. I enjoyed the book immensely and recommend it highly.
A book for non-sportsmen, too.......2000-05-27
If you've ever thought about a fisherman's life on the banks of a trout stream or knee-deep in the Bahamian surf, or just contemplated why the seasons change colors, you might want to hitch a ride with Jim Fergus.
The self-described "hook-and-bullet hack" -- in fact, one of the most thoughtful hunting and fishing writers in America, a field editor for Sports Afield magazine -- travels "The Sporting Road" like Kerouac with a fly rod and a 12-gauge, where every stream is a stream of consciousness. As you cruise the blue highways from Washington to Florida, Fergus muses about hunters' patient wives, sharptail grouse, bamboo fly-rods, the coming of snow, bonefishing, Native American culture, lives worth living, the perils facing small towns, good dogs and good friends. There's a certain poetry that emanates from somewhere deep down, an echo of a primitive time, brought up-to-date by Airstream trailers, Coleman grills and, for better or worse, Eddie Bauer.
This is a good book for non-hunters and non-anglers, the most militant of whom assume avid sportsmen have little conscience or intellect. Fergus proves otherwise. He is an eloquent spokesman for the sporting life, not defensive and clearly thoughtful. If you've ever wanted to understand the allure of frigid mornings in high-plains cornfields, or soggy nights on the banks of an unknown river, or why a hunter would drive for two days for a fleeting glimpse of a bird too small for dinner on its own, read "The Sporting Road."
This book took me back to a time ... not long ago........2000-05-27
Unfortunatly, for me, I was well past middle age (55) before I ever ventured into the woods with a shotgun looking for some game.
I was very excited about my first hunt and after three days of not seeing any game, I realized that during that time, I had changed ... from a novice hunter to a man in love with the outdoors.
I may not have seen any game but I saw the trees (seemed like the first time) ... and the grass, the river, the lake, the fields, the sun and shadows, the clouds drifting overhead.
I listened to the wind, the sounds the trees make when they rub together, the rustling of the grass.
In spite of the fact that I carried a weapon and moved thru the woods in a preditory mode (or maybe because of it) I experienced a sense of peace and wonder that I hadn't known since I was a child ... and I loved every moment of it.
I felt safe, at one with my surroundings ... I felt like I belonged there.
Reading this book brought me back to that place ... and it made me long to get back in the woods as soon as I can.
This book spoke to my heart.
Thank you Mr. Fergus.
A MUST READ.......2000-02-25
Jim Fergus is one of the few outdoor writers who has succeeded in "crossing the line" that very few of this literary ilk have ever accomplished -- Hemingway, as example, for one. He is no "hook and bullet writer." He is an American writer and, with his best-selling ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN, an American novelist. Jim's talent lies in his ability to place himself, the storyteller, at a distance in order to come up close and personal with the people, places and inspirations that surround him. In this book, as in HUNTER'S ROAD, what he encounters while on the road, hunting birds, with his companion Lab, Sweetzer is his own, personal, high adventure. In recounting these things, Jim does so with the perception of a child -- full of excitement and wonderment -- yet crafted with care by the masterful wordsmith that he has proven to be. It is a potent combination -- and what makes all of Jim's works so unique and compelling. A MUST READ.
A story about Hunters more than hunting........1999-12-09
I finished reading "The Sporting Road," by Jim Fergus, last night. I really enjoyed the book. He is a very good writer, however, I am not "old hat" at most of the wing shooting and other sporting pursuits so I would have enjoyed it more if he had told his story with some more sporting "nuggets" (tips). Jim has a few "nuggets" when he goes to Shooting School and when he and friend Fly Fish in a stream next to a resort town's favorite jogging path. I would have liked for him to go more deeply into hunting methods and skills. Fergus is a humble hunter, almost to fault, he dose not brag much. I would have liked him to brag on his dog a bit more. He seems to have a great hunting partner in Sweets, At one point she makes a retrieve of a bird that he did not think was dead. More of the book is spent on the life of a hunter, on the road, than on the hunt. But I guess those are the things that stick out in his memory. "The Sporting Road" romanticizes the life of hunters who are rarely understood in today's pop culture. If any one has ever understood that the journey is more important than the destination, it would be Jim Fergus.

a classic on attracting audiences.......2006-01-30
Danny Newman provides a rigorous approach on building arts audiences. He shows what's arts marketing really is about - win the customer for a series of great artistic products - and provides the tools to be succesful
Theatre Know-How.......2000-07-03
My first job was as marketing director of a regional music theatre company. I was a journalism grad with little "arts" experience. This was a wonderful book. It really helped me understand our audience. It was at my right hand throughout the two years I held that job.
Danny Newman is my god.......2000-05-02
As the volunteer box office manager for a small theater company in the Midwest, I have found Mr. Newman's book the single most valuable arts marketing book I've ever read. It is filled with many wonderful, practical ideas to help a company bring in an audience. I've used many of his suggestions to build our subscription by 25% a year for the last three years. Newman provides clear directions to put his ideas into practice. His Keep It Simple Stupid style is easy and often amusing to read, and he provides a wealth of examples for the non-professional marketer (me). *Most* important, this book brims with optimism. When confronted with kindly but dim-witted audience members and tempermental artistic directors, Mr. Newman is the little voice that says "You can do this, and it will be great!" I love you, Danny.
Book Description
Monsters, demons, mythical creatures, and other supernatural beings abound in this unique and useful CD-ROM and book collection. 418 black-and-white illustrations range from prehistoric pictographs and medieval gargoyles to nightmarish visions — fish with human legs, birds with human faces, haunting masks from Africa, and a host of other fantastic fictional fauna.
Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment . . ........2006-08-15
Page after page of creatures of myth and ancient culture, yet not a single name to go with the face (or fish, or stone carving, etc.). What a disappointment. As a picture book, its ok. As an art tool, its a bit frustrating. Many of the images are instantly recognizable, but many more are a mystery - I would have loved to see a brief notation stating where and when each of the creatures contained in this book originated. All told, if you just want a book of strange things to look at, this is for you. If you have any interest at all in what it is exactly that you are looking at, please pass this book over.

Customer Reviews:
Good book. You can tell the author genuinely cares about cats........2007-03-28
I hesitate to give any item 5 stars--indeed a search will show most of my reviews give mixed or low marks to products. I would have preferred to give it a 4.5, but if between a 4 or 5, I will give it the extra notch.
Overall, the book is not just useful health information on elderly kitties, it is also an homage to them. It attempts to take the reader into an understanding of the difficulties elderly cats face, and how not just to recognize and treat them, but also how to give them a better quality of life and more happiness.
If you want a medical veterinary guide, this book is not in-depth enough. If you want a good guide on elder kitty care and what to do in emergencies to give your cat enough time to get to the vet, this is a good book.
A terrific & moving book........2006-06-21
Not only is this book full of vital information & guidlines, it emphatically displays this author's true love & respect for cats. It's full of beautiful & touching pictures of cats. It is also very orgzanized in its format. I liked this author so much that I am ordering another one of her books. This is the best book I have read on cats, yet.
Gets right to the point.......2005-10-14
Easterly isn't just a sensitive and knowledgeable writer. She's certainly that, but instead of offering up merely entertaining anecdotes and wistful musings, she gets into the helpful details straightaway. The book is slim and beautifully designed, and the photos and illustrations are easy on the eyes, all of which lends an effective visual frame to Easterly's excellent data and advice.
This isn't a cute-kitty book. Those who are committed companions of older felines will find a wealth of compassionately practical and useful information in this terrific book. Highly recommended.
Great Book for Caring Cat Owners.......2003-11-14
This is a great book for caring cat owners. It starts out explaining the aging process in cats, which is NOT as simple as the "seven cat years for one human year" formula we used to hear. There's information about preventative care, first aid, age-related problems, and - of course - the final decision you may have to make for your cat. There's even information about grief and mourning, both yours and that of other cats you may have.
"Your Older Cat" is full of photos, charts, graphs, sidebars, and other materials that make this an easily accessible book. Cats are not complainers, and if you have trouble figuring out when your cat is in pain, Easterly's book will help.
This is not some thick, academic tome. It's a well-written, easily-read book you can turn to when you're worried. Or you can pick it up and enjoy the beautiful photos of cats. There's also a great resource section, with books, magazines, videos, and organizations listed.
Great cat book - even if your cats aren't old.......2002-10-03
"Your Older Cat" by Susan Easterly is for every cat owner. Even if your cats aren't old, you should read this book. It provides state-of-the-art cat advice... techniques that most people haven't heard about yet that can help prevent problems in later years. And it gives comprehensive, compassionate advice for dealing with older cats. Very well written and organized, beautiful pictures and great design, "Your Older Cat" is fun and easy to read. I recommend it highly for yourself and others.

Customer Reviews:
An amazing resource.......2005-09-16
I highly recommend this wonderful book for owners of adult cats of any age. The information is very well presented, complete, and useful to any cat owner. I would definitely recommend that a cat owner have this knowledge BEFORE their cat is old so they can be informed and prepared what to look for in their cat and get proper supportive care before the cat is too ill.
I also think it's fascinating to know that there are certain conditions found in specific breeds. This would help anyone who would want to acquire a cat in the future to be informed about everything they would need to know about the breed they're considering.
Huge kudos to Amy Shojai for writing "Caring For Your Aging Cat."

A must read!.......2003-07-18
Cats are living longer and there's more advanced care available for them. This book clearly talks about all the issues related to the older cat. It has something for everyone in that it give details about complicated information (such as cellular aging) which will be read with interest by those who have some knowledge about cats....but it also explaine things in simpler language for the lay-person.
This book is a must read for all people who cherish their cats and want to make their cats' golden years more comfortable.
Both practical and heartfelt...a real boon to cat lovers..........2003-07-08
Amy Shojai has written perhaps her best work with this book--a touching, caring, hopeful tribute to the aging pet. We who are pet lovers have to face that there will be an end to our beloved pets' lives, but Shojai's book combines practical advice and emotional support to help ensure your aging cat lives out the rest of her days in comfort and happiness. Including chapters on nutrition, exercise, play, and that last sad choice we are sometimes forced to make--euthanasia--Complete Care for Your Aging Cat is a vital addition to any pet lover's bookshelf.
Amy Shojai is an author with a heart, as well as a brain. Her books reflect her love and passion for the animals in our lives, while giving us the advice we need to keep them healthy and happy.

This is a beautiful illustration of Central Asian silk ikats.......1997-06-25
Ikats are carefully crafted fabrics that are totally unique. This book demonstrates the vibrancy and beauty of many silk ikats collected from Soviet Central Asia.
The book is more photographs than text, but it requires pictures to fully appreciate the beauty that is Central Asian ikats and the Rau Collection.
It is amazing that these silks are custom dyed and designed. In ikats, traditional textile art is maintained.
Anyone who has an interest in textiles, Central Asian crafts, or in viewing the beautiful silks that make up the Central Asian woman's wordrobe, should view this book. It is truly unique.
Book Description
This book compiles vital information for gardeners in the unique climates of New York and the Mid-Atlantic area. This indispensible guide includes valuable expert advice, a list of hot and cold tolerance zones for each plant, web sites for information from state universities in the region, and a listing of botanical gardens and arboreta in which to view the listed plants.
Customer Reviews:
Book of Lists Review.......2007-01-18
This is a book that no serious gardener in the Mid-Atlantic Region should be without. It is well organized and easy to use and really answers the question on what plant one should place in a specific location.
Excellent guidebook.......2004-03-26
Our gardening consultants use this book constantly to help homeowners decide which plants work best in different areas of the landscape. There is one or two minor outdated listings, such as recommending leyland cypresses which have been overplanted in this region and recently have been found to suffer from an incurable canker disease that can kill whole rows of trees. However, customers can use this terrific guidebook and then call their extension office or trusted nursery to confirm their selections before making big purchases. A little homework before planting will reward them with healthier, longer lived plants and minimal need for the use of toxic chemicals.
With more people making major plant purchases based on price at big box stores, instead of wisely going to nurseries where the employees are more knowledgeable, it is important to have a book like this available to the average homeowner. Also, this book is geared specifically to the mid-atlantic region's unusual weather challenges.
Excellent book, well written and well organized, a great gift for most gardeners.
A highly recommended guide for tailoring a garden.......2002-08-08
The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists by Bonnie Lee Appleton (Professor of Horticulture, Virginia Tech) and gardening journalist and writer Lois Trigg Chaplin contains more than two hundred lists to help regional gardeners select the very best plants for their particular interests. Ranging from plants that attract butterflies, to shrubs that offer fall color to hardy annuals for early spring bloom, The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists is also laced throughout with practical and insightful tips for gardeners. The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book of Lists is a first-rate, "user friendly", highly recommended guide for tailoring a garden to suit the needs and interests of gardeners in New York and the other mid-Atlantic states.

Book Description
Ingessana presents the results of field research carried out in the Ingessana Hills area of Sudan, between the White and the Blue Niles, among a people who maintain a proud tradition of cultural independence. The book examines the religious institutions of the Ingessana people, attempting to understand how their history and development has been affected by interaction with powerful neighbours, such as the Islamic Sudanese, Nilotics and Ethiopian groups. The Ingessana have always sought to define this engagement in their own terms and in such a way as to preserve their distinctive identity. The analysis shows how the Ingessana have created a unique religious tradition as part of a wider culture of resistance.

Props always to the King of Pop.......2006-10-01
first&Foremost anybody who writes negatively on Michael Jackson obvisiously don't know much about Music. He single handly changed the course of Music twice. He ruled the last century period. the Greatest Musical Figure of last century period. I get so tired of folks trying to downplay this Man's Musical legacy. nobody can deny the lasting impact he made. he truly is aone of a kind. he owes nobody nothing. this Book showcases all of his Motown through Epic Era material&does a Wonderful job. alot of books want to eat off his name, but they don't acknowledge that He opened the door for many. He could have retired after "off the wall&thriller" His Legacy would have been enshrined for always. I mean Michael Jackson is the "M" of MTV&for the Last Century he was the "M" of Music. ain't too many Artists that can boast or Brag that they have done what this Man has done Musically. 3 plus Decades. if you came out after MJ then you are in debt to Him Musically period. He changed the course of Music in all styles&vibes period. truly a One of a Kind Musical Genius&Force.this is a Must Have Book.
MJ The Solo Years.......2003-09-08
Michael Jackson The Solo Years is a one of a kind book. I would suggest this to all MJJ fans from all over. The best part about this book: IT IS PURE MUSIC!!!! The authors themselves are true fans, and you'll find this out while reading it. MJJ The Solo Years is out now, and it is AMAZING!!!!
"A collectors dream," for all fans.
