My five-year old adores this book. It has great illustrations and an engaging story line about a monster hiding in the cave that turned out to be a tiny caterpillar. It is hillarious and involves child attention. After the first reading my son knows who is hiding in the cave and tries to reasure all the scared animals every time we read it. This book is a joy to read for both a parent and a child and has a great message that what we fear often turns out to be small issue.

Age Appropriate Attention Holder.......2000-05-13

This book holds the attention of its intended audience beyond belief. The repetitious phrase, spoken by the would be monster, enables young readers to stay involved as they anticipate each animals incounter. Older readers can't wait to find out the monster's true identity. Best of all the illustrations don't give the monster's identity away until the appropriate time. All during the story it is evident the children's imaginations are whirling wildly. A must have for any teacher or reading volunter.

If you like to paddle on the Calif coast, this is the book for you. My wife and I have paddled (we thought) most of the coast, this book brought us to places that we could only dream of. They way its laid out, you can plan for a part/full or overnight trip. Tips on where to go, what you might see, camping, lodging, ect are great. If you paddle the Calif coast, you will be happy to have this book.

Icones Historiarum Veteris Testamenti (Images from the Old Testament) represents a pivotal moment in the history of Bible illustration. The woodblock prints by Hans Holbein (1497-1543), one of the foremost Renaissance artists of northern Europe, transformed the traditional late medieval iconography of the Old Testament into a major landmark of book illustration. He conveyed emotional depth through nuance of facial expression and body language, by his solidly contrappostal figures within clearly defined spatial settings, by beautifully structured compositions, and by enrichment of the images with ancient as well as contemporary costumes. Despite their small size, the Icones illustrations are monumentally conceived and many of them could easily be enlarged to the size of murals.

Holbein was one of world's great portraitists, but he was also recognized for his large body of graphic works which includes ornamental borders, printers' devices, initials, and especially his woodcut illustrations. His most significant graphic works were his two major woodcut cycles, both printed in Lyon in 1538 by the brothers Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel: The Images of Death (sometimes called the "Dance of Death"), and the cycle of Old Testament illustrations known as the Icones (represented in this Octavo Edition). The edition reproduced and translated here appeared in 1547 and has Latin text above the pictures, as well as French explanatory text below.

This book was a bit of a disappointment as I was looking for some specific info on Border Collies and I felt as if any breed's name could have been substituted where they used the name Border Collie. As a general beginners book on dogs and dog training it was OK and would be worth a few bucks to buy it. Other than some nice photos of Border Collies it had nothing in it specific to this breed.

What a disappointment.

The majority of this book is about dogs in general. If you're looking for information specifically about the Border Collie breed, as I was, don't waste your money. You can get 90% of what was in this book by picking up any book on dogs, and you won't know any more about Border Collies than you did before you read it.

This Book is Great.......1999-11-07

I first read this book when I checked it out of the library and I totaly loved it. I had checked books out before about other breeds, to find out which one would be the best for me, and all of the other books were so full of things that didn't understand that it made it hard to choose. But when I read this book, not only did I find out that the Boder Collie was the right dog for me, but I also was able to understand everyting the author was talking about. So if you're looking for a book that is easy to understnad and yet informative as well I would recomend this book, it's great!

A really great border collie book.......1999-06-16

I found this book at my local library and, a big fan of border collies, was eager to check it out. I was pleased by the full-colored photos instead of black and white ones. The book provides true and top notch information, and the author reflects on her own experiences with border collies several times. There are chapters on feeding, grooming, training, behavior, and equipment. If you need a border collie book, get this one. It's the best one I've ever seen.

I am a new collie owner. I have had dogs before, but never a collie. This book aquainted me with the finer points of how a collie is "different" from other dogs...and they need to be trained and raised as such. Buy this book if you are new to collies.

It is very well-written and contains a lot of important topics concerning proper collie care and what to look for and expect when purchasing a collie. Better to buy Anderson's Book.......2006-05-18

I recently bought this book after purchasing a few Lophophora specimens, and was somewhat dissappointed. Much of the information is sparse or inaccurate, and overall you come away having learned little. It is vague in describing the effects and chemistry of the plant, and minimal effort is made to try and describe different species and varieties.

A much better book to buy would be "Peyote: The Divine Cactus", by Edward F. Anderson. It gives a detailed ethnographic history of peyote, describing the modern ceremonies of the Navajo, Plains, Huichol, and many other Indian Tribes. He studies its effects on humans in detail, its chemistry, legal aspects of peyote, and (most importantly!) the botany of Peyote, giving a comprehensive view of the species as well as its different taxonomic varieties (eg. L. williamsi, L. diffusa, L. jourdania, L. fricii, L. decipiens, etc.). Much of the information contained within cannot be found on the internet.

Although most of Gottlieb's material is dealt with in Anderson's book, nevertheless the practical information on grafting and mescaline extration is much more detailed in Gottlieb's (probably because of the different target audiences :-)

All in all, still good to have as an accompaniment.

Not so impressed.......2005-10-11

This book is ok, if you want to learn about native use and things like that. It has good descriptions of lots of rare entheogenic cacti. If all you want to know how to do, is cultivate Lophophora and Tichocerous, the internet has better information.

PeYoTe.......2000-03-31

This book provides good information layed out in an easy to read format on the cultivation, consumption, legality, and history of peyote and other similar cacti. It also gives a breakdown of the alkaloids in peyote and gives detailed methods for mescaline extraction (you know...for resaerch purposes). It also includes pictures and descriptions of other cacti containing alkaloids similar to peyote. The only shortcoming I find in this book is the lack of any research reports on the harmful effects of peyote, but that could be because there has been very little research done on it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in peyote for any purpose.

The prevailing publishing ethic has insisted that typography-the selection and arrangement of type and other visual elements on a page-should be an invisible, silent, and deferential servant to the text it conveys.

This book contests that conventional point of view. Looking at texts ranging from the King James Bible to contemporary comic strips, the contributors to Illuminating Letters examine the seldom considered but richly revealing relationships between a text's typography and its literary interpretation. The essays assume no previous typographic knowledge or expertise; instead they invite readers primarily concerned with literary and cultural meanings to turn a more curious eye to the visual and physical forms of a specific text or genre. Outstanding Collection! So Well Put Together!.......2006-01-19

This collection is outstanding: it is so much more than any single author could possibly
do and, as it is carefully curated and connected (using bridge mini-essays
between chapters), it connects as a treatise on the topic. The only weak
contribution, in my reading, is the essay on Nella Larsen; though it is
interesting to to read about how Larsen's type changed as a way of making
her more appealing to contemporary scholars, that argument (and the aligned one
about connections w/ Von Vectin) cannot compare to the complexity of the
other chapters. Each chapter is outstanding. Includes chapters on the typography of the King James bible, Poe, Whitman, comics, etc. Very comprehensive.
