Book Description
Shark conservation and management is often hindered by a lack of basic biological information for most species. An understanding of the age structure and growth dynamics of a population is important for effective conservation and management because this information is often utilized for determination of natural mortality and longevity. Ultimately age and growth information is used for calculation of vital rates in population models. Over the last few years there have been advances in the quantitative study of age and growth of chondrichthyan fishes. Novel approaches to ageing of various chondrichthyan fishes continue to arise.
This volume is a collection of papers on several of these topics that include new hard parts (e.g. caudal thorns) for assessments of age, new techniques for validation (e.g. bomb radiocarbon) and reexaminations of previous age and growth models. This volume also contains papers on the importance of assessing the precision and accuracy of statistical formulas, analyses, and models that are used in age and growth studies. There is currently a great deal of research being conducted, some of which is truly "pushing the envelope," in attempts to assess the life history parameters of numerous chondrichthyan fishes.

Description:
The effect of replacing dietary protein with gelatinized cornstarch (GCS) on apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), body composition, growth performance and liver enzyme activities involved in control of intermediary metabolism, was studied in Sparus aurata L. Fingerlings of S. aurata were fed 93 days three diets containing 63% protein and 5% gelatinized cornstarch (LC diet), 54% protein and 18% GCS (MC diet) or 47% protein and 26% GCS (HC diet). Diet HC gave ADC values for carbon, nitrogen and dry matter that were significantly below the corresponding values of the other diets. Fish on MC diet registered higher fresh weight than fish on LC and HC, and higher specific growth rate (SGR) than fish on HC. The lipid body content ranked in the order HC>MC>LC. High correlations between carbohydrate level and liver enzyme activity were found for pyruvate kinase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and alanine aminotransferase. For cultures of S. aurata, we conclude that carbohydrates like GCS could replace dietary protein, enhance growth rate and reduce nitrogen losses to the ambient waters when used at levels below 20%.

Description:
We examined habitat use, movement, and growth of young-of-the-year (YOY) Fundulus heteroclitus and Fundulus luciae with a tag/recapture experiment in tide-dominated salt marshes to determine if movements from Spartina marsh surface can account for the occurrence of larger, older individuals in other habitats. Evaluation of the tagging techniques in laboratory experiments with YOY F. heteroclitus (15-35 mm TL) found that coded wire tags were retained at least up to 77 days. The high rates of recapture in the field also indicate that the tagging approach generally worked well. Of a total of 5748 YOY F. heteroclitus (14-40 mm TL) and 133 YOY F. luciae (17-40 mm TL) tagged, 56.0% and 74.4% were recaptured, respectively. Most (44%) YOY F. heteroclitus recaptured occurred at or near (0-5 m) the release site, but some were captured up to 299 m away up to 166 days after tagging. By comparison, movement of F. luciae was very limited, with 99% of recaptures occurring at the exact site of release after up to 66 days at liberty. These different movement patterns by YOY Fundulus indicate that species-specific behavior plays an important role in habitat selection. In addition, it appears that dispersal of YOY F. heteroclitus can help to explain the occurrence of larger individuals of this species in Phragmites-dominated marshes even though there is little evidence of use of this habitat by small YOY.

Description:
As eutrophication of coastal waters increases, water quality issues such as hypoxia have come to the forefront of environmental concerns for many estuarine systems. Chronic hypoxia during the summer has become a common occurrence in numerous estuaries, degrading nursery habitat and increasing the potential for exposure of juvenile fish to low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO). We conducted a laboratory study to investigate how hypoxic conditions and temperature affect growth rates of two juvenile estuary-dependent fish: the Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) and spot (Leiostomus xanthurus). For a 2-week period, we exposed the fish to one of four constant DO levels (6.0, 4.0, 2.0 or 1.5 mg O"2 l^-^1), at one of two temperatures (25 or 30 ^oC). A fifth DO treatment, included for spot at 30 ^oC, allowed DO to fluctuate from 10.0 mg O"2 l^-^1 during the day, to 2.0 mg O"2 l^-^1 at night. This diel fluctuation approximated the natural DO cycle in tidal estuarine creeks. Size measurements were recorded at the beginning, middle and end of experiments. Growth rates were generally unaffected by low DO until concentrations dropped to 1.5 mg O"2 l^-^1, resulting in 31-89% growth reductions. Our results suggest that DO levels must be severely depressed, and in fact, approaching lethal limits, to negatively impact growth of juvenile spot and Atlantic menhaden.

Description:
The effects of temperature on growth, pelagic larval duration (PLD) and maximum swimming speed were compared in the tropical fish marine species Amphiprion melanopus, to determine how temperature change affects these three factors critical to survival in larvae. The effects of rearing temperature (25 and 28 ^oC) on the length of the larval period and growth were examined in conjunction with the effects of swimming temperature (reared at 25 ^oC, swum at 25 and 28 ^oC, reared at 28 ^oC, swum at 25 and 28 ^oC) on critical swimming speed (U-crit). Larvae reared at 25 ^oC had a 25% longer pelagic larval duration (PLD) than larvae reared at 28 ^oC, 12.3 (+/-0.3) days compared with 9 (+/-0.6) days at 25 ^oC. To offset this effect of reduced developmental rate, growth and U-crit were measured in larvae reared at 28 and 25 ^oC at the same absolute age (7 days after hatching (dah)) and same developmental age (7 dah at 28 ^oC cf. 11 dah at 25 ^oC), corresponding to the day before metamorphosis. Larvae reared at 25 ^oC were smaller than larvae reared at 28 ^oC at the same absolute age (7 dah at 25 ^oC cf. 7 dah at 28 ^oC), yet larger at similar developmental age (11 dah at 25 ^oC cf. 7 dah at 28 ^oC) when weight and standard length were compared. This stage-specific size increase did not result in better performance in larvae at the same developmental age, as there was no difference in U-crit in premetamorphic larvae reared at either temperature (7 dah at 28 ^oC c.f 11 dah at 25 ^oC). However, U-crit was considerably slower in 7-day-old larvae reared at 25 ^oC than larvae of the same absolute age (7 dah) reared at 28 ^oC. Swimming temperature controls demonstrated that a change in temperature immediately prior to swimming tests did not effect swimming performance for larvae reared at either temperature. A decreased in rearing temperature resulted in longer larval durations, reduced growth rates and slower swimming development in larvae. However, the magnitude of the response of each of these traits varied considerably. As such, larvae reared at the lower temperature were a larger size at metamorphosis but had poorer relative swimming capabilities. This study highlights the importance of measuring a range of ecologically relevant traits in developing larvae to properly characterise their relative condition and performance in response to environmental change.

A beautiful little book.......2002-05-12
This is a beautiful little book about a man dedicated to his craft and the relationship he developed with a radio commentator 40 years his junior. Bob Edwards brings Red Barber to life and anyone fortunate enough to have heard their all too short weekly get togethers will enjoy the background information on the amazing Red Barber.
Edwards voice is familiar to millions but he grew to respect and admire this (perhaps) old fashioned southern gentleman and his gentle ways. Barber was truly a man of strong convictions and a basic goodness that shines through in this book. Heartwarming and fascinating.

Customer Reviews:
Not that helpful.......2007-03-13
I was a little disappointed in this book overall. I thought it would have great activity ideas for my speech class, and they were just "average" or "so-so" ideas--nothing that workable or useful.
Wonderful!!.......2005-10-26
This book is absolutely great. It's creative, easy to read, and even easier to employ in the classroom! It can be used with multiple grade levels- middle school, high school, and beyond. I found it inspiring and would recommend it anyone associated with the public speaking / oral comm. training field.
Good even for the ESL classroom........2005-10-25
I got this book to use in my ESL speech classes. With a few tweeks, I was able to apply the exercises in the book to Japanese students. Great new approach for the students.
Very Useful Tool........2005-09-17
Many of the things that a teacher is taught in school about what one should teach and how one should teach really aren't that useful once a teacher actually starts teaching. Not only that, but many beginning teachers struggling with teaching the things they want to teach in a way that excites students and causes them to want to learn. Speech classes at the secondary level are no different than classes anywhere else and public speaking/speech teachers struggle just as much as any othe teacher with how to make lesson practical and applicable in the classroom.
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION is a great tool for any speech teacher looking for ideas to use in the classroom. As a beginning teacher, I have found it incredibly valuable. I have found it especially useful in trying to create lesson plans and to find fun ideas for fillers to use at the end of a class. The book is full of ideas and covers many of the areas of public speaking from informative speeches, impromptu speeches, oral interpretation, persuasive speeches, reader's theatre, just to name a few. It's a wonderful resource.
Excellent teaching tool!.......2005-08-20
This book was all I needed to create a fun public speaking course curriculum for middle school students. The layout was clear and easy to read. There were many interesting and fun activities/lessons which I could incorporate into the lesson. There were a lot of fun and creative ideas that made the students WANT to speak in front of a group! Great supplement for the classroom!

Koehler is a little strange..........2007-06-05
I have had Koehler's guard dog training book for about 5 years and have used the obedience section to train 3 of my own personal dogs. I am not a dog trainer but I understand the importance Koehler puts into his training in obedience. There is NOTHING worse than an ill behaved dog... especially since I am a fan of the GSD!!! Koehler is strange and perhaps a bit too strict in some of his training but when push comes to shove... his training works!!! The only book I've read that is equilivent or better is "Dog training for law enforcement" by R.S. Eden!!!! As a police officer I plan to use Koehler's book to further train my personal dog for home protection.
The Koehler Method of Guard Dog Training.......2007-05-23
This was the book that I used to train my own dogs successfully and to start my own small dog training business decades ago when the book was first published. I reordered this book because my original copy was tattered shreds from repeated use and continual reference. These methods are well explained and effective. That being said, given modern animal behavior and psychology, some say these methods of training are dated and unnecessary.
ex-Australian Air Force Police Dog Handler.......2007-04-09
Lots of people who call themselves dog trainers still suffer from the same fatal belief that dogs are like humans and therefore the training techniques used must be deployed as if training humans. I have trained thousands of dogs over the past 26 years most of them after so called dog trainers have stuffed it up. I can say with all honesty that if the dogs that I had to re-train had been brought up in their rightful place 'beneath the pecking order of their owner with discipline and then love', most would never need some of the more dramatic techniques Koehler mentions in the book. Dogs cannot be reasoned with like humans, let's face it, some humans can't be reasoned with either but reasoning is not a capability of canines, they do not possess reasoning skills, ask a scientist.
Koehler's methods support the proactive position that prevention is better than a cure. His tough tactics are left only for the hard cases and only then for those worth keeping. If Koehler had his way, they would never get this way in the first place. If every person who called themselves a dog trainer could understand the dogs' psychology like Koehler, the world would be a better place for dogs.
Don't discount Koehler's book, old as it is, it is still the final word for training dogs. It has never failed me or my customers or the dogs I have had to retrain. The method has been responsible for saving the life of at least 27 dogs that would have otherwise been put down by the local council.
This +works+.......2007-01-27
9 years ago, I trained my problematic adopted Dalmatian using the guidance that this book provided. Prior to the training she nipped incessantly, our hands were near bloody, and we were very close to having her put down.
When the training was complete, it was like the difference between night and day. The "attentiveness" that Koehler mentions is present to this very day, 9 years after the training was completed. The dog watches our every move, is responsive to verbal and physical cues, and our life with her has been fantastic. I could not recommend this book more wholeheartedly.
I use parts to train toy dogs........2006-09-24
I first read several of his books in 1979. Once you get the main concepts of his training methods, it can be used on any dog. I have a papillon so of course I do not use the attack or guard training portion. But his methods of getting dogs to walk on heal without a lease or to come under all conditions is kind, not cruel. I am an avid reader, so I have read hundreds of dog training books, none get to the essence of training like Koehler.
Book Description
An invaluable guide to training dogs for obedience, tracking, and protection.

Training Dogs: For Protection Work.......2007-01-10
very good, lots of illustrations
a little advance for the beginner but it will help also
the working dog.......2000-10-21
We wrote this brief and to the point book for one reason: to quickly provide information for both the inexperienced and wrongfully taught handler of the working dog. There are three additional sub-themes. The working dog is a family member; however, it is not a "sport" dog. Defense of a family, or handler, must never be considered sport, even in training. Secondly, the working dog is a full-time two-year-old child in the sense of time commitment. The handler must not only care for physical needs, but must maintain training routines, (obedience, tracking and grip work). The goal is not robotic responses, but team interaction that incorporates work, fun and mutual respect. To repeat, this is also a goal of protection work. The work shows how to incorporate positive training aspects, and points out abusive "techniques" and their results: a dog that can't be depended upon in the multiple settings of family life. The work is an easy read and useful for owners of non-protection breeds as well.
Overall good book.......1999-11-06
When reading this book's title, one believes they are buying a book solely on protection. Negative. This book also covers tracking and obedience training. This is fine, however, much of the techniques of the training are just an overview and are not really detailed. Many questions that may arise during training are left unanswered in this very brief book. It basically is a book on the Schutzhund sport, without it coming out and saying it outright. Overall, the book is a worthy addition for Schutzhund enthusiasts though would probably not provide any new information to the experienced Schutzhund trainer or those people well read on any of the three phases of Schutzhund.

Book Description
Since H.A. Pilsbry's classic work on the chitons (Polyplacophora), published between 1892 and 1894 in the Manual of Conchology, there has been no comprehensive taxonomic review of this group.
Piet Kaas and Richard van Belle changed this when they started the book series Monograph of Living Chitons, which aimed, after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known - or hitherto unknown - species. The first five volumes were published between 1985 and 1994. The sudden death of seniour author Piet Kaas in 1996 postponed the publication of Volume 6. The unfinished manuscript was taken up by a new author, Hermann Strack, who in collaboration with van Belle managed to finish it.
In Volume 6 no less than 167 species are treated and depicted, of which 3 are described as new. Two important families are covered: the Schizochitonidae and the Chitonidae. Especially the coverage of the Chitonidae, with well know and species-rich genera and subgenera as Chiton, Rhyssoplax, Acanthopleura, Tonicia, Lucilina and Onithochiton is long awaited and will prove very useful to researchers, students and collectors alike.

Book Description
Chitons form a peculiar and highly interesting class of molluscs, known with certainty to exist since the Ordovician, and widespread in all world seas to depths from 0 to over 7,000 m. In recent years taxonomists all over the world have much contributed to our knowledge of the chitons and their synonymy, so that the number of living species now amounts to some 800. The authors propose to not only compile all actual knowledge about the living chitons, but, where possible, a after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known -- or hitherto unknown -- species. In most cases the detailed figures are new and drawn by the senior author, P. Kaas. The Monograph of Living Chitons is planned to appear in ten volumes.

Customer Reviews:
The Last Great Servant.......2005-08-12
While I was a bit disenchanted that Dr. Kilgore does not provide the reader with a detail account of his life, I am enormously grateful for his essays and speeches he selected to place in the back section of his book. It is here the reader finds the answers to creating the "Beloved Community" and the genius and true essence of Thomas Kilgore, Jr.
A biography that speaks full testimony to his rich life.......2002-02-08
A Servant's Journey: The Life And Work Of Thomas Kilgore is the compelling biography of Rv. Thomas Kilgore Jr., an African-American civil rights leader who was deeply involved in organizing the 1963 march on Washington. Among his other noted accomplishments are his service as an advisor to LA mayor Tom Bradley and becoming the first African-American president of American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A. A Servant's Journey is a biography that speaks full testimony to his rich life and his deep and fervent faith in God. Highly recommended reading for students with an interested in the American Civil Rights movement, -- and the life of a truly dedicated man of God.
