Shameless Research.......2005-09-01
The author of this ' book ' is a part-time professor of English. You would think with this in mind that he might have bothered to get his facts correct. James Herriot was a wonderful man, and deserved his story to be told with accuracy. The author of this book should be ashamed. Don't waste your money, there are so many better things to read.
Inaccurate book.......2005-02-24
This book can not be considered non-fiction. The book is full of inaccuracies. So many in fact that the book is useless as a biography of Alf Wight aka James Herriot. Sternlicht shows Wight graduating college in 1937 but in another part of the book the date is listed as 1938. The correct date is 1939. The author also claims that Wight was in the RAF from 1943-1945 when it was actually 1941-1943. He even has the name of his son wrong listing it as Nicholas James when it's James Alexander. There are many more inaccuracies in this book which makes it wise to avoid reading it.
"All Things Herriot" is all things bright and beautiful.......2000-04-18
I would just like to say that I have been a fan of the great James Herriot and his writings for many years. His books have transported me to places of green pastures and bittersweet memories of the English countryside and the animals that lived there. This book, "All Things Herriot: James Herriot and His Peaceable Kingdom" has captured the reality behind the man who had brought us down those craggy pathways to the sweet, heartwrentching stories of our animal friends. Thank you for this book and for helping us to better know the man behind it all.
A comprehensive, illuminating critical /literary biography!.......2000-04-11
All Things Herriot: James Herriot and His Peaceable Kingdom is just what its title implies: a comprehensive overview of all of the works of James Herriot (pen name of James Alfred Wight),skillfully interwoven with a biography of the famous veterinarian/writer. The book's author, Sanford Sternlicht, is a professor of English at Syracuse University and was for a time a Visiting Fellow at York University; his perspective on Herriot and on his beloved Yorkshire is informed and fine-tuned, and the tone of All Things Herriot is on the whole warm and appreciative. Sternlicht examines all of Herriot's major works, as well as his compilations and juvenile publications. He points out the unifying themes in all these works in a very clear and direct way -- the recurrent archetypal stories of birth, life, and death (which, as archetypes, will forever have universal appeal and will stand up well to repeated readings), and Herriot's message that suffering (animal and human) is "...the great, perennial challenge to all our humanity. Our response to suffering is ultimately how, as societies and individuals, we are to be judged." (All Things Herriot, p.76) Other facets of Herriot's appeal, which Sternlicht brings to the fore so well, include his beautifully-drawn and intricate portraits of the Yorkshire people, and of course, the animals, as well as Herriot's seemingly limitless store of heart-wrenching, gorgeous descriptions of the wild beauty of Yorkshire itself. This critical/literary biography never talks down to the reader, and more than once I pulled out my trusty dictionary to ascertain the full meaning of a passage -- but I enjoy learning new things and I'm sure that most readers will find this a stimulating read! Sternlicht's style is direct and immediate and colorful (not unlike Herriot's!), and I found it a joy to read. It made me want to re-read all the Herriot books, armed as I am with so much new understanding of Herriot and his world. This is a must for all Herriot fans and for those who have yet to discover his work. It is a fascinating and thorough portrait of not only a caring healer, a professional in his field, but (amazingly) a very gifted storyteller as well.
Very disappointed.......1998-10-07
I bought this book, sight-unseen, on the name alone. I was very disappointed to find that it read like a college term paper where the student has to fill up a given amount of space and spends most of there time stating the obvious. I feel this book just capitilizes on the Herriot name (a little irreverently, I might add) and nothing more.

Customer Reviews:
A good read even for an armchair traveler........2007-10-10
I just traveled to Ireland without leaving my chair - that's how I felt after reading this book front to back. I bought this book to learn more about Ireland, from a traveler's perspective. Rick Steves provides a good mix of history and detailed information suitable for travel planning and entertaining enough for the armchair traveler. I enjoy Rick Steves' programs and I plan to purchase more of his books.
A must if you are traveling.......2007-09-20
Once again Rick has made what could have been a dry guide book interesting, fun, and full of information that travelers really want to know. It takes talent to write a book such as his, fun to read for the sake of reading.
I highly recommend Rick's series of Travel Guides. Buy them and enjoy even if you aren't trotting the globe.
Best Book for Ireland Ever.......2007-09-12
Rick Steves really takes you on the best trips around Europe. His descriptions are spot on and his maps are easy to follow. I would never use any other tour book when traveling.
Rather a point of view.......2007-09-07
You have to hand it to Rick Steeves: he carved out a niche in the travel business by focusing on average travelers, and trying to make their journeys better than average with useful information. I agree with his overall philosophy that spending more money doesn't necessarily enhance one's experience. However, he often lapses into a disconcerting lecture -- never quite a rant -- about how Americans should be quiet, humble, considerate, etc. when they venture abroad. I for one could do without his preachy style. If I am considering a trip to Ireland, and have come as far as Steeves' guide for information, it stands to reason that I'm no yahoo who expects a "Top o' the mornin'" from Irish people, or a McDonalds in every town. There are some of us who are educated and curious travelers, just as there are boobs from Over There. But then, Steeves isn't writing a book to lecture European dolts, is he?
Aside from the overdone bits about how rude Americans are, Steeves curiously leaves out some wonderful sights in Ireland from his guidebook. I loved Bantry House, on the Beara Peninsula, but there's no mention of it. Likewise, he neglects the must-see island of Ilnacullen in Glengarriff, with its Italianate villa and gardens. He also missed niceties like the Avoca handweavers (great tea and scones on the go, upscale wearables, etc).
Some of his estimates for how many days to give each town were off. Kinsale rated two days. Though it's a small town, the harbor, fortress, wine shops and surrounding activities alone were worth a bit more time. I don't know anything about his B&B recommendations, other than the fact that his choices were 10-15 euros more expensive than my picks in the same regions, with not much lost in hospitality or cuisine. I realize you can't cover it all, but with the Internet being such a great source of info, it's hard to rely on just one book for accommodations. Experience is wisdom.
Great Ireland Guide.......2007-09-06
Great ideas for minimizing expenses while maximizing enjoyment. Ireland is our favorite place outside of the U.S., but Rick's guide always has "new" information that makes another trip a better experience!

Book Description
Rich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, Turtles develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. You will learn how these skills are readily available for cultivating your own personal genius in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious.
This book is the documentary, with added notes and stories, of Grinder/Delozier's five day seminar called "Prerequisites To Personal Genius". John Grinder and Judith Delozier get their participants to think about the structure of thinking; how our thought patterns become our beliefs about reality. The limitations of those thought patterns can be overcome, however, when a person is able to expand his/her perceptual filters and model "geniuses" -- this is the process which has been shown in the lives of people such as Einstein, Milton Erickson, and Gregory Bateson.
Throughout the book, the authors challenge you to reexamine the structures of your "mind" and the ways that all parts can be integrated in an internal dance.
Customer Reviews:
Where's Bandler when you need him.......2007-09-04
I thought that the information presented in this book was good, it just needed a much better presentation, and unfortunately, the book falls short in helping us understand just exactly what's going on.
This seminar would have been much more understandable on video. About a third of the time that the readers spend with Grinder and DeLozier is completely unaccounted for, when they go off to learn african dancing. Unfortunately, because we can't see anything that is going on during these activities (critical to the understanding of the book, mind you), some of the discussion and lecture is difficult to follow, and it's impossible to actually try the activities at home and be a part of the experience.
In fact, it seems like the authors went out of their way to make it impossible for us to see into this activity. Each day's sessions break off right before they begin the dance lessons, and each day seems to start after all of the dancing discussion has already taken place. When the audience goes to talk to the African dance instructor at the end of the novel to share some of their experiences and ask him questions, the book comes to an end. Thus, this experience which the authors felt was so key to understanding the lecture in person is completely left out of the book version of the seminar, and that's a real shame.
Then there is the lecture itself, which is primarily comprised of Grinder and DeLozier reading biology books and Carlos Castaneda to the audience at large. It makes for a very unusual presentation that is very often difficult to follow, and there is no way that you can set this book down unless you're at a clearly defined stopping point (which are very few and far between, especially at the beginning).
The dialogue between the authors and the audience is often poorly handled, as it doesn't account for interruptions, so an author will speak a complete thought answering a question or interjecting a response to something that hasn't happened yet, followed by the question or comment that was just answered. If you think that "Persuasion Engineering" is poorly written, wait until you see this!
What this book showed me is exactly why Bandler is still famous and why Grinder has fallen off the face of the planet. He's not entertaining, and he's not particularly good at explaining himself in his own words! Half of the questions he is asked are answered with a quote from one of the source books, while the others were done with rambling stories that required four pages full of backstory so that we can understand what happened. There is one segment of Grinder giving out homework that literally spans 22 pages thanks to three easy-to-answer questions.
For the information included in this book, it's worth the price, but make sure to set aside full reading sessions if you're going to read this because it's very hard to follow and very disorganized. And don't think you're going to get to experience this book at any level other than a theoretical one, because it's just not possible. A possibly great guide gone bad.
It's the journey, not the destination.......2004-08-21
John Grinder and Judith Delozier provide the reader with a journey through one of their seminars. It wakes you up to your life. Or, more accurately, it can. I have read almost every NLP in print and pretty much all of the ones out of print. I hold certifications in NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis as well a my Unversity education as an anthropologist. I found this book a bit of a stretch for my vocabulary, and a wonderful journey through a series of highly transformative experiences. Read it with your mind open and do the drills and you will find your life changing.
school cafeteria left-overs at a steak-house price.......2004-07-20
First, let me say I own most of the NLP books and highly esteem John Grinder & Richard Bandler. NLP is amazing stuff. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN, on the other-hand, is, to use a re-frame, left-overs from the NLP School Cafeteria with a steak-house price. This one is going into the garbage where school cafeteria swill belongs. Don't waste your time or your money on it. Buy the other NLP books! This one won't make you a champ, and you won't feel like a chump.
Impeccable Internal Organizational Patterning.......2002-02-20
Turtles is a book for people already exposed in some degree to the basic tenets of NLP. It is not "about" NLP, but how to create logical structures and frameworks within yourself to employ these (and other) tools in a most effective and ecological manner. A great deal of emphasis is placed on applying the right energy to the right "logical level". Often, people are making the right move in a situation, but applying that move to the wrong logical level. This book is about identifying logical levels and having an internal structure that allows you to interface at the right time at the right logical level with the right change- the minimum effort that makes the maximum difference. Grinder is a master storyteller given his exceptional background, and he winds the teachings around interesting and compelling stories from his and other fascinating folks' experiences. Worth the read even if you never learned anything about NLP. Grinder's a cool dude! :)
Nothing New.......2001-11-08
Much as I hate an argument, I must point out that the previous reviewer is seriously misinformed if he thinks that the material in this book was in some way new or different from the original NLP.
Terrence McCLendon, writing in "The Wild Days : NLP 1972-1981" explains in detail how Bandler and Grinder discovered Castaneda's work (the basis of "New Code" NLP) in 1974, and quickly incorporated various ideas - especially "stopping the world" - into their teaching at that time.
Personally I found this book badly written and tedious in the extreme. So nothing new, and definitely not recommended.

Clip Art & CD.......2007-05-12
I says high res CD, but they are low res scans where the dpi was raised to 600. The book is better to scan as the images are nice, but small. I would never purchase a product from this book company again.
very DECENT.......2007-03-31
im on the fence about this one...it has lots of artwork, but hte art on the disk are clearly scans, and not even great ones- they didnt bother to use descreen filers. this is also a very old product, and there were 3-4 corrupted files on the disc, which took some work to figure out exactly which ones.
the worst thing however, is that it is simply a picture book- there is no description of ANY of them. i wanted to know why certain animals and elements were used, and i am left to search ou t yet another book like this for satisfaction. know you waht, im giving this a 2, a 3 is too good. update this book NOW.
worth every penny.......2004-10-20
These Dover book/CD ROMs are a graphic designers delight. It's so hard to find good quality graphics that are royalty free, and not end up spending a fortune. Dover has a good selection of royal free images that are presented in a book and are on CD ROM.
I Run three history groups on MSN and I love to have beautiful pages for people when they visit. The images in the CD ROM is in full colour and so dazzling. Over 250 large images in TIFF format. Sharp images ready to use. Great for Paint Shop PRO. You don't have to scan, the images are there. You don't have to install some program. Just open them from you CR Rom Drive.
This is a collection of authentic coat coats of arms of royal families, institutions, guilds, towns, and cities of Europe, perfect for any Medieval Web site, teaching site or history site.
Simply worth every penny.

Uga Rules.......2006-11-16
Even if you are not interested in the Bulldogs of Georgia you probably will find "Damn Good Dogs" a delightful book; beautifully illustrated, the book relates the history behind the English bulldogs that have become the University of Georgia's mascot beginning in 1956. Sonny Seiler, who has owned the bulldogs, has put together (with Kent Hannon), a pleasing book filled with many photographs. A chapter is devoted to each of the dogs relating their lives and what occurred while they were mascot and the growing fame of the Ugas. I first saw this book on a visit to Savannah and was charmed by it from the moment I opened the cover.
This is a large format book that was thoughtfully designed and is a great tribute to the remarkable dogs named Uga.
Uga rules!.......2006-08-09
I am a lifelong University of Alabama fan but I have always known and admitted that Uga is - bar none - the coolest dog on the planet. And any dog who bites back at an Auburn player knows his football! My all-time favorite was Uga V and I was thrilled when he was rightfully named the greatest mascot ever by Sports Illustrated and made their cover. I was also excited to see this book.
This book is a great overview of the lives of the Ugas, their owners, and the Georgia football program. If you love dogs and college football, you'll love this book.
I liked it.......2004-04-26
This is a good book. I highly recommend it to Ga. fans. UGA is a staple of the entire Georgia program and his lovable story is one that all college football fans can enjoy. I recommend "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" as well for any serious SEC Fans.
A tribute to America's #1 Mascot.......2003-10-15
Guaranteed to please all Georgia fans and English Bulldog lovers, this entertaining book contains the individual stories of six beloved Ugas who have served as mascots for the University of Georgia since 1956. Filled with delightful photos, illustrations and memorabilia spanning nearly five decades, it is loaded with fun facts, heartwarming stories--even poems written in their honor. Uga flies free on Delta, has an air-conditioned doghouse and an official Student ID Card, eats steak, attends social affairs, occasionally wears a tux, has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in Coca Cola ads, in Playboy magazine, in Animals Who's Who, on credit cards, in movies, TV shows--and more! Following lavish funeral tributes, Ugas I through V were interred in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium with inspiring epitaphs outlining their achievements engraved on bronze tablets. Uga VI has already made a name for himself "woofing" his encouragement to a well-deserved SEC title in 2002. GO DAWGS and long live Uga VI.
Dam Good Dogs!!.......2003-07-28
Despite the fact that I am from Georgia Tech, the long time feud of UGA, sarcastically, I am also an English bulldog lover, having owned 2 English bullies in my life thus far. I highly recommend this book to all bulldog lovers, even if they are not associated with UGA.

superb and straight.......2004-05-20
This book is informative, fun, and easy to read without being over simplistic.
This is an exhaustive, intelligent history of the breed, and an up to date record of it's development. It details why the modern KC registered bulldogs are failing, and even points to where the failing begins and at what date! Every vet in world should back the Victorian bulldog over the modern dog... and the KC bulldog club even refused a contest, in fitness and health and well being between the two breeds. K. Mollett and R. Jenkins went out on a limb to bring us this book, and everyone who loves bull breeds should have a copy, or at least have read one from the librabry! Ken Molletts work is rightly praised, and his ethics are beyond reproach. A well written, entertaining book, by real bulldoggers... for bulldoggers. Of course if you like your dogs so inbred they can't move, breath, or give birth naturally, and if you beleive the kennel clubs always know the best dogs, and what's best for dogs, then you might just be offended!
Very Biased.......2004-03-17
The book was written for a ten year old to read. It was only 160 pages of large print and full page pictures. There weren't many facts but only opinions and speculation. Not much substance. There isn't much written about the actual english bulldog or why it was really bred for it to be the way it is today. The authors are constantly putting down the bulldog breed and trying to make the new recreated "victorian bulldogge" breed sound much better in order to sell them in England. If this new breed which they are trying to "push" isn't accepted by internationally famous organizations like the AKC, why again is it supposed to be a better breed? If you are a bulldog enthusiast or breeder, you will be offended by reading this book. Not recommended!
The sttory of the Real Bulldog.......2000-10-08
If you are interested in the history of the Bulldog, want to know more about the recreated and natural breeds or just want a book full of great pictures then this is the book for you. Ken Mollet has not let his love for his own recreated Bulldogge breed ( the Victorian Bulldogge) interfere with his discussion of other Bulldogge and Bulldog breeds. A Great Book!!

Only read once... .......2004-08-23
This book provides some basic information about several action figure lines. On the plus side, this book does provide some information and pictures on a few lines that may be hard to find elsewhere (i.e., Big Jim and The Six Million Dollar Man). On the minus side, there is no mention of Star Wars figures, and very little about Mego figures. Further, most of the information that is presented is easily found elsewhere. In short, there are much better books out there about both action figures in general (one of my favorites being "Tomart's Encyclopedia of Action Figures: The 1001 Most Popular Collectibles of All Time"), and about specific action figure lines (i.e., just Star Wars, just GI Joe, just Mego, just Captain Action, etc.). To be fair, I did enjoy going through this book once, I just haven't found a need to open it again since.

Vademecum of typefaces.......2002-04-05
Paracelsus said that every substance in the world can cure and every substance can kill, and that the only difference was made by dose and timing. So, the art of using substances to cure involves the wisdom of chosing among thousands of them which one, how much, how combined, and when, is adequate for an individual case.
That is why pharmacysts and physicians get thick books where they read about the origins, composition, benefits, mechanisms of action and risks of every substance, so they can decide and suggest the appropriate procedure under their professional knowledge and responsibility.
Well, Haley does that with typography.
Reviewing just a few, a well picked, an even obvious, few typefaces among the dozen thousand available to designers, Haley shows us the origins, composition, benefits, mechanisms of action and risks of each one of them as if he was talking about medicine or fine wines.
ABC's stands for Attributes, Background and Considerations for use, reviewed methodically for each typeface quoted.
No restraining and arbitrary design rules, no false aesthetic freedom. Just knowledge, experience, sensible common sense.
Just this is how this typeface works, this is how it does not work, its advantages, inconveniences, risks, for you to choose and combine after you have read this book under your own professional knowledge and responsibility.

Magnificent and courageous!.......2006-04-20
I read this book in one sitting. It was riveting, compelling and I couldn't put it down. This book helped me heal. My son was killed in 1991. Ms. Tate has put into words the emotions of a mother of a murdered child. The book was gut wrenching, yet carthartic. I can't imagine how hard this book was to write for the author, but I am glad that she did write it. This book rates 5 stars (and 5 thumbs up!).
A Must Read!!.......2004-08-04
Scraping My Heart depicts the painful yet healing journey of a mother who survived the most painful experience imaginable, burying one's own child. Through her words, we are able fully understand the depth of the bond shared between mother and son and how that bond helped her in moving through her pain. Having recently lost a loved one myself, this book provided me with the reassurance that it was okay to go to the core of my grief with the knowledge that I would not only make it through, but that I would come out a stronger and more enlightened human being. I thank Tate for sharing her story and for using her words to paint such a beautiful portrait of her son. More importantly, I thank her providing us survivors with a wonderful guide through the healing process.
