Seloc Yanmar manual.......2001-10-25
This is a well written manual that, for non-professionals, I would highly recommend over the "official" Yanmar shop manual (thought it doesn't hurt to have both). The Seloc manual is much easier to follow, the tasks are laid out in a 1-2-3 step by step format, and it is well illustrated, and comprehensive.
A thourough guide but missing an engine!.......2000-06-03
This was a very complete and thourough guide to the GM series as well as the 4JH and 4JH Turbo models. The book is easy to read yet detailed enough for the serious mechanic/machinist. My only negative comment is that the manual over looked the 3JH series completely. I believe this oversight should be corrected in future versions.

Earthy and exotic designs.......2007-10-05
I've been looking for design ideas for polymer and metal clays and have been looking at the Dover series for motifs. I've found the other books particularly good, especially for curvilinear designs (Celtic, Halstadt) and faces (Chinese and Japanese designs and Art Nouveau) but wanted something more exotic and earthy.
I liked the spooky Haida designs--as I knew I would from visits to the Museum of Natural History in NYC--and some of the Maya glyphs with their tight and somewhat busy designs. Although I like Aztec pottery shapes, I've never been fond of their motifs. The eastern woodland designs with their florals are pleasant and a lot like those from the Scandinavian and Balkins countries. The Southwestern Pueblo designs, with their stylized animals and spirits, are also quite arresting. The designs representing the Plains Indians are less engaging and under represent what is available, which is unfortunate since some of their geometrics are quite good.
As usual, the CD format is much easier than the old floppy disk I was familiar with in the old days of clip art.
A few images from many many North American natives.......2005-03-23
This book includes almost 400 images, but only a few are taken from each of many many North American native cultures. Although they are loosely grouped together by region, the images from any one tribe or nation are scattered randomly throughout that section. Therefore, it is hard to find which images go together. The images do show the diversity of the Native American cultures, but I would have preferred that the book be organized by specific tribe/nation or by chronology. On the plus side, each image is numbered, so that it can be easily found on the accompanying CD-ROM.
The images are from the following Native American tribes and cultures: Acoma, Alabama, Arapaho, Athapascan, Aztec, Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Blackfoot, Casa Grandes, Cheyenne, Chipewyan, Choctaw, Cochiti, Comanche, Cherokee, Chitimacha, Cree, Creek, Crow, Dakota Sioux, Dene, Haida, Hawikuh, Hidatsa, Hopi, Huichol, Inuit, Iriquois, Laguna, Kaska, Kwakiutl, Maidu, Makah, Malecite, Maya, Menominee, Mescalero Apache, Mestizo, Micmac, Mimbres, Mixtec, Mohawk (Iriquois), Mohegan, Montagnais, Nahua, Naskapi, Navajo, Nez Perce, Ojibway, Onondaga (Iriquois), Otomi, Papago, Passamaquoddy, Pima, Penobscot, Potowatomi, Pueblo, Salish, San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo, Sarcee, Sauk Fox, Seminole, Shoshone, Sioux, Slavey, Tesuque, Tinne, Tlingit, Toltec, Tsia, Tsimshian, Ute, Winnebago, Yuchi, Yurok, Zapotec, and Zuni. For some of these tribes or nations, there may be as little as one image - such as for the Chitimacha; for others, there may be several - such as the Hopi.
If you are looking for Aztec, Olmec, Mayan, Mixtec, or Zapotec images, I would recommend a different book from Dover instead, called "Ancient Mexican Designs" (ISBN: 0486995283). Interestingly, though, the book "Ancient Mexican Designs" does not include any Huichol, Mestizo, or Toltec images, as does "North American Indian Motifs".
The book delivers exactly what it promised, so normally I would give it 5 stars. However, because the images are not well-organized and because the originating culture is not identified for all of the images, I have downgraded my rating to a 4.
A Very Nice Basic Collection.......2004-05-02
This is a great basic collection of Native American motifs. All images are black and white, as is indicated in the product description. The printed images provided in the book are true to size and of very high quality. Each image is identified with tribe name of origin and organized regionally. The easy-to-navigate CD, which requires no program installation, provides each image in several different file formats, including .GIF, .JPG, .TIF, .BMP and others. Because there is quite a wide variety of tribal motifs covered, there are only a handful of images from each tribe, but as an overview and basic collection, I would highly recommed it.
Don't waste your money........2003-12-03
The CD is very difficult to navigate. The "clip art" is not really clip art, but just copies of what's in the book, so you can't really use it on posters, flyers, etc. I had envisioned all these wonderful, colorful motifs that I could use for my various projects, however, this CD only has small black and white photos of some not-so-authentic motifs, if you will. I am disappointed.
Perhaps too diverse.......2000-06-16
Great clip art. Not as many illustrations as other books in the series. Everything from Aztec to Tlingit to eastern woodland to pueblo to plains - thereby not allowing many illustrations from each as one might like. Await volume solely on Southwest! The legends in the clip art are annoying but can be easily dealt with if you can crop the graphics.

Keep a box of Kleenex handy!.......2004-02-27
Yes, it's THAT Jameson Parker, the blond brother from TV's "Simon and Simon" PI show. He left show biz to become a writer, and is apparently doing a darn good job.
This is a collection of stories, essays, and poems about dealing with the grief of losing a beloved dog. Included are familiar names - like James Herriott, John Updike, and James Thurber - from familiar books, and unfamiliar pieces, originally published in newspapers and foreign books. Parker himself even has a short piece, a very touching one on the pet-owner's most difficult decision: euthanasia.
Let me warn you, you probably won't be able to read more than one or two of these pieces at a time. I found myself in tears, time after time. But the writing is good, and not all of the stories are complete tearjerkers.
A Delight for Dog Lovers.......2003-10-25
Those of us who have ever loved a dog will be deeply moved by this collection of stories. The authors range from dog trainers to owners of a beloved household pet, but each writer captured something of the gift dogs give their human companions. My only complaint with the book was with the occasional typographical errors that the publisher should have caught. The book was most impressive in every other respect. It tugged at my heart strings, and I am sure that other readers will share my feelings.

Customer Reviews:
Best book I have seen on water gardens.......2000-06-06
This is the best book I have seen on water gardens. It covers every step of the process from planning and construction through landscaping to stocking with fish and even maintenance.
Many options are presented as far as size style and building methods for ponds, fountains, waterfalls, and streams. Fully illustrated with color photos and diagrams this is above all a great "how to do it" book.
There is extensive coverage on choosing and caring for fish and other wildlife. A large encyclopedia of foliage including floating plants, marginals, ferns, shrubs and trees is also included. A photo, physical description, zones it will tolerate, & often some advice is given for each. Tons of landscaping enhancements are also suggested.
There is history of water gardening and plenty of photos of beautiful finished gardens to give you ideas as well. I can't emphasize too strongly through how important this hands-on book is for someone who want to create a water garden of their own.

close analysis by the ranking scholar on the Septuagint of Isaiah.......2005-07-25
This volume is a close study of LXX Isaiah chapter 23 by the most prolific writer on the Greek Isaiah. Chapter One ('Introduction: the Method for the Book', 1-19) surveys the various approaches to LXX Isaiah that have occupied the field since Z. Frankel's seminal study. The author takes a 'contextual approach'. The LXX is at first to be studied in relation to its presumed Vorlage (similar to MT Isaiah), but more importantly is taken seriously as a coherent text in its own right. Pace Seeligmann, the translator's genius is not to be discovered at the word or verse level, in 'isolated free renderings', but rather at the level of pericope or passage. The translator is a scholar, with liberties to engage in creative and actualising interpretation.
Chapter Two ('The Masoretic Text of Isaiah 23', pp. 20-47) offers a verse-by-verse comment, chiefly designed to sort out the protagonists of this difficult chapter and their respective roles. These exegetical observations are complemented by analysis of the chapter's divisions, style, and contents. An excursus questions the erstwhile consensus that Tarshish refers to Spanish 'Tartessos', favouring instead a location in Asia Minor and, by extension, the Mediterranean and even Africa/Carthage.
In Chapter Three ('The Septuagint of Isaiah 23 as Text', pp. 48-87), van der Kooij compares the LXX with the MT of Isaiah 23, presenting thereafter a reading of the Greek text that explains the considerable differences between the two as contributing to a coherent interpretation in LXX 23. The various parts of that Greek chapter fit together and tell the story of Carthage's fall (rather than Tyre's, as in MT) and the resulting demise of Tyre as that city's trading partner.
Chapter four ('The Septuagint of Isaiah 23 as a Vision', pp. 88-109) locates the Greek Isaiah in the context of other Jewish texts from the Hellenistic period, documents which place the responsibility of interpreting ancient oracles in the hands of scholars and sages of the highest level (e.g. Daniel, the Teacher of Righteousness, even Josephus). The translator is a professional Scripture scholar who receives an ancient oracle of Tyre and moulds it so that it becomes a 'recognizable prediction of events at the time of its author-translator'. The difference between LXX Isaiah and other 'visions' in this genre is that Isaiah is at the same time an interpretation and a translation of a venerable oracle. Van der Kooij's intricate reconstruction of the translator's milieu makes him a witness to several political events and thus establishes a tightly-defined chronology that is rather more specific than, but not in contradiction to, the current consensus that the translator of LXX Isaiah worked near the mid-point of the 2nd century BCE. Indeed, van der Kooij helped to establish that consensus with his Textzeugen des Jesajabuches. The translator was witness to the destruction of Carthage in 146, the Parthian invasion in Babylonia (understood as a signal of the breakdown of the Seleucid empire), and the involvement of Tyre in the Hellenization of Jerusalem and its temple.
In chapter five ('The Septuagint of Isaiah 23 and its Hebrew Vorlage', pp. 110-161), van der Kooij shows how LXX Isaiah 23 makes sense as the work of a 'learned scribe' who translates a consonantal parent text very similar to the MT, while reading and interpreting in a manner distinct from that which eventually congeals in the Massoretic tradition. This scholarly translator, quite distinct from any ad hoc translator of a text that is new and unfamiliar to him, produces a scholarly exegesis of a text he knows well. His craft can be compared to that of the learned translator of TJ Isaiah or even Jerome.
Chapter six ('The Septuagint of Isaiah 23: Revision and Reception', pp. 162-185) demonstrates that the limited textual attestation of disparate Greek revisions makes it impossible to prove a relationship between revision and reception (interpretation). Nevertheless, it becomes clear that patristic exegesis of Isaiah 23 applies the judgement part of the chapter (vv. 1-14) to the fall of Tyre to the Babylonians, while finding in the promissory section a reference to the spread of Christianity.
Van der Kooij provides his reader more than he has promised. His book uses Isaiah 23 as a test case in which he can work out in detail an approach to the Isaiah translator that he has promoted at another level for decades. That translator is an intelligent interpreter of his Hebrew Vorlage rather than a 'dragoman' working atomistically. An interpretatively acute scribe, he intends to produce a meaningful text rather than merely a word-for-word rendering of the Hebrew. Knowledge of LXX Isaiah and early scribal/translation practice would be considerably advanced by application of van der Kooij's method to other biblical texts as these are represented in the early versions.

The Forgotten Heroes: The Story of the Buffalo Soldiers.......2007-02-14
The Forgotten Heroes: The Story of the Buffalo Soldiers is about black calvarymen who went to fight the Native Americans out West in the late 1800's, and to make it safe for settlers. They fought battles against Native Americans led by Geronimo and other famous Native Americans. By joining the army, the soldiers hoped to find freedom, but to make the land safe for settlers, they had to take the Native American's freedom away.

Book Description
This is the lively story of the only bicycle corps the U.S. Army ever authorized. Using buffalo soldiers, this 1890s African-American unit conducted drills and exercises on wheels. They rode into Northern Montana on muddy trails and toured Yellowstone on their 100-pound iron bicycles. As proof of their capabilities, these Iron Riders pedaled 1,900 miles from Ft. Missoula, across the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and steamy Great Plains, to St. Louis. As they approached the city over 1,000 civilian bicyclists rode out to escort them into town in a great parade. Learn more about the adventures of this little known buffalo soldier unit and fascinating details about this era in America. Well researched and a good read. Full of rare pictures and drawings.

Iron riders:story of the Buffalo Soldiers Bicyle Corps.......2007-05-13
Nice book.REMINDS me of the under ground rail road.
Good Start.......2006-02-17
This is a very interesting and neglected subject for a book. I'm interested in anything about bicycling and a bit about the turn of the century, so this was a must-read. Because this is the only book of it's kind I've found, I would recommend reading it.
However, be aware of a few annoyances. The book is poorly edited and proof-read. There are many hyphens separating words that are not at the ends of lines, and a few paragraphs end mid-sentence. There are quite a few repeated passages and it tends to wander a bit from the main subject. One gets the feeling it would not have filled a book of more normal format and was padded a bit. It would be nice to see this one re-published and improved.
Again, I don't mean to disparage it too much - just pointing out some personal annoyances.
Hope it helps...
Great but little known story brought to light.......2004-03-14
In 1897 a contingent of twenty black soldiers, a white West Point officer, a military surgeon and a young newspaper reporter rode bicycles from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri, following the Burlington Northern railroad. The groups' leader, Lt. Moss, was trying to prove to the army that bicycles could be a valuable asset. I first became acquainted with this little known gem of history through the children's magazine Highlights in the early 90s. I have been fascinated with it ever since. George Niels Sorenson's Iron Riders presents this story and the broader context of those "Buffalo Soldiers-on-wheels". He tells us of the practice trip the bicycle corp made to Yellowstone Park before their epic St. Louis run and the lives of the riders after their trip. This 8 x 10 book has many primary source pictures, documents and maps which illuminate the text. It's the only informational book I know of devoted to a story which deserves a wider audience. If you are a middle school history teacher, like me, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It would make a fantastic unit. But I agree with the other reviewer: anybody who likes black history, social history, military history, bicycle touring, the west and/or unsung heroes will find a lot to enjoy in this book. And, if you like this book you'll want to check out the PBS video The Bicycle Corps: America's Black Army on Wheels and the children's book Black Wheels.
Unique book about a unique corps of soldiers.......2002-03-01
The subtitle, "Story of the 1890s Fort Missoula Buffalo Soldiers Bicycle Corps" is a good general description of the book's contents. I had never heard of Ft. Missoula, much less known that they had a bicycle corps, before stumbling across this book in the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial's bookstore. It's not a long book, but it covers its topic well. Of course I was interested in the horrendous ride from Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, but the account of the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry saving the Rough Riders at San Juan Hill was enlightening. Also (all too) informative was the account of the "discharge without honor" by order of President Theodore Roosevelt of 167 soldiers, many of them formerly of the bicycle corps. The book also includes numerous photos, a number of which are wonderful shots (and very well-printed) of the soldiers in Yellowstone National Park. I highly recommend this book as an entertaining account of a dedicated group of American soldiers who happened to have been of African descent. (Incidently, having read this book I was able to feel incredibly smug with recognition when the Bicycle Corps turned up as an integral part of Peter Heck's "Tom's Lawyer", the most recent installment of his Mark Twain mystery series.)
Excellent Book!.......2001-04-17
What a great book! It really has something for everybody; military bike history, Black history, the American frontier at the turn of the century and more. Great pictures and illustrations also. Military cycling books are rare and this one fills a much needed niche. You will not be disappointed.

Book Description
This is the life story of Sergeant Thomas Boyne, a native of Prince George's County, Maryland, who joined the 2nd Light Artillery Company "B" of the United States Colored Troops at Point Lookout, Maryland, on February 5, 1864 and went on to receive our nation's highest military award, the Medal of Honor, while serving in the 9th United States Cavalry during the Indian Wars. This is also the story of Boyne's comrades-African-American Buffalo Soldiers and the officers who commanded his various assigned units-who helped to open and preserve the West while performing their military duty for their country. This is a story that needs to be told.
The integration of official government records, historical events, and newspaper articles enhance this comprehensive look at the struggles endured by Sergeant Thomas Boyne, and other African-Americans who served their country during this period. Sergeant Thomas Boyne's entire military career is covered in precise detail. Careful transcriptions of original muster rolls for the period covered include: Muster Roll Records and Returns for Company "B" 2nd Light Artillery United States Colored Troops, Company "K" 40th United States Infantry and Company "F" 25th United States Infantry, Company "C" 9th United States Cavalry, Company "L" 9th United States Cavalry, and Company "H" 25th United States Infantry. Book Description
After being shot and left for dead, Johnny Buffalo, a soldier in the United States Army, watches in horror as a lynch mob viciously murders his best friend and mentor. Bitter and disillusioned by the army's justice system, Johnny takes the law into his own hands and vows to bring the Texans who killled his friend to justice.
Customer Reviews:
Not just another "old-west" story. Well written, fast-paced.......1999-10-12
Mr. Smith has humanized the plight of the "buffalo soldier" after the Civil War without showing bitterness. The main character, Johnny Buffalo, shows many emotions; desperation, patriotism, loyalty, hatred and love. He is a believable person and you find yourself empathizing with him, no matter what your own race or background. The plot moves swiftly without bogging down. Some descriptions may be a too gory for the faint-hearted but descriptive they are! I would order Mr. Smith's next book, based on this one.
