Improve Your Swing. Seriously........2000-08-02
We are a nation of self-improvement junkies: just look at the trade paperback best sellers lists. And most books promise much more than they can deliver. This modest little spiral-bound book is really more like a well-illustrated cookbook however, and delivers to golfers more than most books. For each of the main strokes in golf (putting, chipping/pitching, full swing), there are several series of photographs of perfect strokes taken from the front, side and above: careful study and subsequent emulation (maybe with a friend to help) will indeed improve your game. There are also helpful sections on stretching and appropriate weight training.
Product Description
Learn to Play golf ON THE COURSE not at the Practice tee. With the limited time we all have for golf, wasting it all on the practice tee, just will not cut it anymore. Full of useful stroke saving advice.

Customer Reviews:
A very good tool for Museum interpretation.......2004-12-03
Although presumably somewhat outdated, 'The Good Guide' (published in 1985) remains a useful source of ideas and suggestions especially for museum docents and interpreters, as well as (to a much lesser extent) for Tourist Guides. The authors explain what museum education is and what it should be, what are its goals and principles.
Their text is focused mainly on problems of the interpretation of museum exhibits to children and school groups. This is why they point out various concepts of learning, mostly those relating to very young museum visitors. Consequently, they suggest a few corresponding techniques of interpretation suitable for such an audience.
The best part of this 'sourcebook' gives us pretty clear and usable explanations of various interpretative techniques such as Lecture-Discussion, Inquiry-Discussion and Guided Discovery including their comparative advantages. While these techniques might be applicable to the case of museum interpretation, they can hardly be used in the much more diversified field of general Tour Guiding.
The last chapter is focused on communication skills - both verbal and non-verbal. Though a few observations given here sound instructive, we must bear in mind that the text was written 20 years ago. In the meantime, a lot of titles have been published on the same topic; both the overall philosophy of interpretation and communication techniques have greatly been improved.
Sensible and Useful.......2000-08-01
I was given this book when I began my work as a museum interpreter ten years ago. It gives a comprehensive overview of the field. There is information on both how museums have changed and present trends. Theoretical insights about learning theory are developed into realistic applications for planning activities on the museum floor. Part Two on the interpretive process would be improved by some discussion of first person interpretation, a dynamic new way to bring history alive at house museums, outdoor sites, and more traditional history museums. Also, there's room for more discussion of the problems and pitfalls which today's visitors can offer. But I found this book so helpful that I plan to use it in training 150 volunteers and a dozen paid staff at a new museum opening in January, 2001.
Book Description
Superb collection of signs and symbols associated with the supernatural traces man's evolution as an artist and designer. Includes 171 black-and-white images ranging from Egyptian representations of life, earth and fertility to early-17th-century characterizations of the devil. Symbols from Roman, Greek, Chinese, Nordic, and Germanic civilizations are featured.

LIMITED.......2007-06-12
With so many mystical symbols from all periods and all cultures in the history of this planet, this clip art book offers less than a 10,000th of 1 percent of all the different mystical images out there.
Unbelievably limited in it's scope and therefore, very disappointing. I would gladly pay more money for different volumes, each focusing on related symbols from the same religion or culture.

Great Book !!.......2001-11-19
Too good to go on the coffee table!. This is a great reference for those Minton collectors, and historians. There are not many books on Minton available, but this is a MUST HAVE for your library. The *only* issue I have is that it does not have the famous Minton "seaweed pattern" mentioned anywhere. Photos are great, and overall it is well researched.

Book Description
Japanese gardens have long been revered for their impeccable design, detail and composition, properties which elevate them from being mere gardens to peaceful havens of serenity and sacredness. Now the ancient Japanese Sakuteiki ("Notes on Garden Design")-the quintessential volume on Japanese garden design-is available for English-speaking readers, alongside gorgeous color photographs of Japan's most famous gardens. Infinite Spaces also includes practical advice and philosophical insights on building and maintaining water features such as miniature ponds and waterways, placing stones for excluding evil spirits and inviting the protection of benevolent deities, and much more. Today's gardeners can gather knowledge, specific design techniques, and inspiration to create magnificent garden sanctuaries in their own backyards.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book.......2001-10-03
If your one of those people that can learn from basic truths and visual stimulous that book is great. Its a simple book with translations from the "bible" of Japanese gardening. And photos to show you examples.
Great photos but very little Sakuteiki.......2001-02-12
This is a better than average coffee-table book about Japanese Gardens. The photos are for the most part excellent (a few are too dark). Many of the gardens shown are located outside of the Kyoto area and have seldom if ever been shown in other such (English language) books on this subject; this is a nice touch because it means that there is little overlap between this book and others. I had high hopes that the book would include a substantial (if not complete) translation of the Sakuteiki but despite the introduction which implies that this might be the case, it is not true. I would guess that less than 25% of the text of Sakuteiki is included, and the authors have rearranged the material into thematic sections to fit their own taste. This is a terrible pity becuase the 11th century gardening manual known by the name "Sakuteiki" is a very important point of reference in understanding the historical developement of Japanese gardens - sections from it are quoted by almost every book written on the subject, yet there is no generally available English translation of it. The 1976 translation by Shigemaru Shimoyama (publ. by Town & City Planners,Inc. Tokyo) was printed in a tiny edition of only 300 copies so the only way to read it is by borrowing a copy thru the academic inter-library loan program at your local public library. The way the authors of this book have rearranged the text into disjointed quotations (with widely varying typographic style & presentation) really does not do justice to the orginal material and is in considerable danger of reinforcing the old western stereotype of "pearls of wisdom from the inscrutable orient". I would suggest that you buy this book for the pictures alone and not pay too much attention to the text as currently presented. If the book is popular enough to merit a 2nd edition I hope the authors will reconsider the current format.
Incredible photography!.......2000-10-17
The photos are so luscious--I can't think of a more appropriate term--that it's as if you're in these gardens. I believe all of the photos are of the ancient gardens in Kyoto, and if not, they're definately all from Japan. This book is truly one that was inspired by the Sakuteki, not an illustrated edition of the Sakuteki. You'll want it for dreamy page turning, not as an instruction book for your own gardens.

Book Description
Japanese gardens have long been admired for their capacity to illuminate the spirit of nature through impeccable design, detail and composition: properties that elevate them from mere gardens to sanctuaries. Infinite Spaces pairs extracts from the Sakuteiki, an 11th century treatise on Japanese garden design, with the stunning photography of Sadao Hibi, that beautifully illustrates the principles of this ancient work. The Sakuteiki, literally "notes on garden design", by the 11th century coutier and poet Tachibana no Toshitsuna, is an opus of centuries of garden design wisdom and remains a vital influence for gardeners in Japan today.

Customer Reviews:
A refreshing LaTeX Primer.......2003-04-20
This is a nice book for LaTeX beginners to get up to speed. Consider this an updated The LaTeX Companion, but with less coverage on different packages and written in a more tutorial-like style. Like all new books about technology, it has the advantage of being able to cover recent developments like Prosper (a package for preparing slides) and Omega (multilingual capable TeX).
My only real gripe about this book is its Chapter 10, where the authors discuss the multilingual typesetting. They include many exotic languages including Breton, Cherokee and even Esperanto! But there is zero coverage on Chinese when there are mature packages for TeXing in Chinese... (I also need to mention that there are some printing problem with this book. But those are mostly minor annoyances. Look at the errata list.)
As of this writing (April 2003), this is the book that I will recommend to new LaTeX users. And even if you already have some other books on LaTeX, this book can still be a refreshing read but I would not consider this a must-have.

Book Description
This book collects the letters written between 1906 and 1932 by novelist and civil rights activist Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932). Between 1885 and 1905, this pioneer in the African-American literary tradition published three novels, two books of short stories, a biography of Frederick Douglass, and many short stories and essays in prestigious periodicals—at the same time managing a stenography and court reporting firm in Cleveland, Ohio. His works, which featured the experiences of African-Americans in the ante- and post-bellum period, received favorable reviews. But they did not find a large and appreciative audience until many decades later when both the civil rights movement and increased interest in the African-American contribution to American cultural life resulted in the “rediscovering” of Chesnutt’s large body of writings.
Though he never saw the publication of another of his book-length manuscripts after 1905, Chesnutt continued to write fiction and essays, and to deliver speeches ranging from disenfranchisement to the life and works of Alexandre Dumas, and to act in behalf of the African-American cause through such organizations as the Committee of Twelve and the N.A.A.C.P. A dedicated integrationist opposed to “race-pride” movements of all kinds, Chesnutt in his post-1905 letters includes many references to the unfortunate consequences of racial segregation, addressed to both African-American and white correspondents.
These letters also reveal a multi-faceted personality with interests that transcended the issue of race and urged everyone to live life to the fullest. His correspondents included prominent members of the Harlem Renaissance as well as major American political figures Chesnutt sought to influence on behalf of his fellow African-Americans. As a successful businessman enjoying the amenities of upper middle class American life, a family man, and an Episcopalian who worshipped at a “white church,” Chesnutt in many respects embodied the realization of the American Dream. He was, as William Dean Howells termed Booker T. Washington, an “exemplary citizen” and a role model for all Americans.
