This book contains very little practical information on staircase construction and assembly. Most of the book consists of stair tables ( 95 % of it ) for stair layout which any competent carpenter can figure on the job in a few minutes.While the tables are complete and may save a little time,the few sections on stair layout and assembly are limited in scope and vaguely written.If you want to learn more about staircase construction,save your money and pass this one up!

This book is exactly what it claims to be - a pictorial archive. For descriptions or details, Dover has a wide selection of books that will be of immense help with materials, construction, and history. For those who already have a working knowledge of the century in fashion, this book is a candy store of visual tidbits.
Just a note: very few fashion illustrations of the nineteenth century were colored; hand-coloring was a labor-intensive process reserved for high-end publications with limited runs. Check my Listmania list for some books with color illustrations.

This book has lovely pictures, although the author admits she has taken the liberty to decide which should be included for each year. It would be an even better book if the articles were named, better yet a small description, sometimes I wondered if a shoe were a man or woman's.
I think the book is good but stops short of being great but it is interesting and I would like to a sequel with the other drawings that were left out of this edition.

This review is from the viewpoint of a home sewer and crafter who adores vintage clothing, not a fashion historian, designer or illustrator.
Never having purchased any of the Pictorial Archives series before, I was surprised and initially disappointed by the black and white illustrations and the complete lack of text.
While it is fascinating to see how fashion accessories evolved over the decades there is no indication of whether an item was casual and day wear, or dressier for afternoon or evening. An index naming the style of each piece and/or notes explaining popular colors of the day would be helpful.
The black and white illustrations do render the detail of the accessories beautifully. With over 2,000 copyright free illustrations of wide variety of styles for men, women and children included I look forward to years of inspiration for fashion embellishment.

I paid $19.95 give or take plus shipping for this book a couple years ago. I was very disappointed with the book when I bought it, for the price that I bought it. I can't let someone pay $225 for this book.
This book is what I like to call a hopper pastime. Or in other words, its good enough to be taken with me when its time to mail a letter, and maybe it'll come in handy if we happen to run outta TP.

This book was originally $19.95 and worth every penny of that sum! Most of the information included is from previously published Military Vehicle Magazine. A purist would be hard pressed to take much from this, all of the information is contained the G-741 Tech manual. Sorry Dave!

If you buy this book with the idea that it will guide you in the restoration of your M37, save your money because it does not do that. There are a few useful suggestions but very few specific restoration tips. The book is worth its original issue price of $20 but not much more than that. It's an interesting read but not a how-to book.
Best Book if you own an M37.......2002-01-09
David Ahl, one-time owner and publisher of Military Vehicles Magazine wrote this book It will be regarded as "The" book on the subject for years to come. Covering everything from the history and variations of the venerable Dodge M37 to restoration, modification, and maintenance of these trucks, this book is an excellent value for the money.
The foundation of Dodge M37 Restoration Guide is the compilation of various M37-related articles from the pages of Miltary Vehicles Magazine. But it doesn't end there. 19 pages reproduce several rare, U.S. Army M37 references, including a little-known Modification Work Order for reinforcing the tailgates of all M37 vehicles. In addition, the author has added 40 more pages comprising some of the best parts diagrams available from original Department of the Army Supply Manuals. These pages alone guarantee that this is a book that will get dirty in your garage. Thankfully, it is inexpensive enough to allow most to have a copy in the library as well as a garage copy.
Whether you own an M37, M42, M43, M37B1, or are considering the purchase of one, or simply love the brute-like characteristics of Dodge military trucks, this book will fill an important gap in your library. As with any specialty vehicle book, the print run on this book was probably on the small side, so don't put this one off until later. Buy it today!
A good start for restoring an M37.......2001-12-02
This book gives a very nice overview of the M37. Includes history, production numbers, pictures etc. Many how-to type chapters. The book is at times a little short on detail, especially those little items that make a restoration complete. Not really a book written by an expert, but almost a journal of David Ahl's restoration of his own truck. Many of the chapters appear to be simple reprints of articles out of military vehicle magazine. Included are some general tips for those new to vehicle restoration. Importantly the book includes nearly 40 pages of exploded parts diagrams and a chart on lubrication order. These alone are probably worth the price of the book. Overall, a good book at a fair price.

I was disappointed to find that this book is essentially a museum catalog of a specific exhibition. While it is extremely well done as such, the collection of objects it represents is necessarily limited.
I make and design furniture, and was hoping to find more represented. The rather limited selection of objects shown are by Aalto and other very familiar designers. Practically nothing is shown from the new generation of Finns.
As an overview of 20th Century Finnish work, this book is ok. It is not particularly exciting and could be better organized, but unfortunately is one of the few works in English on the subject.

Im very happy with this book overall. I actually used it in my preparation for my Quark XPress Expert Certificaton exam. It saved me on a few occasions during the exam as well (open book). I highly recommend this book for all levels of users as it has quick and efficient tricks and techniques.

I have always liked the QuickStart Guides because I learn visually and appreciated having them show what the menu, screen and final result should look like. However, while this book does show the new features and there are many, I was extremely disappointed in that they didn't review the powerful new Web layout features that were stressed at MacWorld and on Quarkk's web site. Here, they refer to an earlier book acting as if nothing different has happened. It has and someone, somewhere needs to write a book on just this feature.
Quark showed us in their MacWorld booth the ease of creating both a print and web page at the same time, in fact dragging items from one to the other. For someone who struggles with Dreamweaver, this was web design heaven. Quark does all the heavy lifting and while their own book is good, it hardly begins to show what can be
done.

I work as a copy editor at a newspaper, so I needed a book which would help me get started real quick! I played around a bit with Quark years ago, but I really needed it fleshed out for my understanding. This book explains all the basic tools in Quark, and gives some good technical tips. I just wished it could have also given some advice on decent layout design. I keep this one at my desk!

Those of us who communicate in spoken English sometimes despair of technical manuals written by those who don't. This is true even for those of us who are quite literate in computer-speak. This Vistual Quickstart Guide to QuarkXPress 6 is a wonderful exception. Quark is a highly intuitive program that makes sense once one grasps the basics, and I found this an excellent reference guide to learning this powerful program. However, I found it worked best if I was at my computer exploring the areas being discussed in the text. What was most helpful to me were the screen illustrations.

Reading this book in order to learn QuarkXpress is akin to reading the dictionary cover to cover in order to learn the English language. Can it be done? Maybe. But it is not recommended.
This book may be useful as a detailed reference guide on a given subject but it should not be used to learn Quark. After attempting to read this book cover to cover for 70+ pages I had to put it down and find another quick start book to learn Quark.

I have read a couple of the Visual Quick Start books by these authors and find them to be readable and concise.
The way the material is portrayed is precise, and conveys the general idea of the task to be accomplished with a minimum of extraneous information.
Highly recommended.
The only downside is that there is not example material included with the books.

I'll stay away from long reviews. If you have used Elaine Weinman's books before, you know to expect a first-class guide. If you haven't, put down the ... bible and go for this one. I taught myself Quark 4 from one of her books and these are invaluable references.

Good Book for Transitioning either way.......2007-06-14
I am actually trained on InDesign, but when I started my position with a nonprofit org they still use Quark 5. I purchased this book to see if I can somehow convert concepts the other way around. This book did a lovely job of showing how to do the same task in Quark and InDesign. It's lifesaver. The only opportunity for change would be illustrations. There are illustrations provided, but I wish there were more. Besides that it's a great bang for your buck.

I am new to the graphic design world as I have been a web designer mostly. I am slowly making the switch from only web design programs to graphic design programs. With so much choice out their I broke it down to quark or indesign. I have never used either program before, and I have to say this book makes it so much easier to compare the two products side by side. Alot of people can sit there and tell you to use one product over the other. But, myself I like to make my own decision on which product of either quark or indesign that best suits me. I have to say this book was easy to read, the pictures and steps were quick and easy to follow for either program. This book is USEFUL for anyone wanting to learn alittle bit about the quark or indesign program. Or even if you know the programs, provides clear and precise steps of comparing the two differences in the products. This book would probably more for individuals on the beginner to intermediate levels, but it is a excellent book resource.
Within Arms Reach.......2006-08-05
Like many others out there making the switch, I have too. Going from Pagemaker to Quark I literally did in an hour. Quark to InDesign, well that took a little longer. This book is great when your in the middle of doing something and you know what you want, but no clue how to do it or what its called. For those things that need some further explaination I recommend the CS2 Bible. I use Face to Face more, but both are great references to have!
An excellent resource for any designer making the switch.......2005-08-02
This book is indispensable to any designer making the switch from Quark Xpress to InDesign. Using the side-by-side comparison of features is much faster than trying to find the answers online, because in order to look up how to do something, you have to know what it's called in InDesign. With this book, you don't. As a book designer, my only complaint is that the layout is unnecessarily complex. The shaded areas and bars, underlined text, icons and more were distracting rather than helpful, and the quality of the paper used makes the book look and feel cheap. Even so, I highly commend the author for the fine job in compiling such a massive amount of material and I highly recommend the book.

McCants Stewart was a prominent African-American in his day, a lawyer during the Reconstruction who later became a minister, politician, and racial activist and was regarded by his peers as one of the most significant black leaders of his generation. This book illuminates the professional career and private lives of Stewart and his descendants over three generations, providing an epic account of an African-American family in America.
Albert Broussard researched Stewart family papers and interviewed nearly every surviving family member to tell their unusual story. He not only presents the first major study of T. McCants Stewart's civil rights and political career; he also tells how Stewart's descendants rejected white society's negative image of blacks and worked to improve themselves and uplift their race: Stewart's son Gilchrist became a successful civil rights leader and attorney and his daughter Carlotta an educator, while granddaughter Katherine directed a Head Start program and her husband Robert Flippin was the first black parole officer at San Quentin prison.
The saga of the Stewarts begins in antebellum Charleston but moves on to New York, Africa, Hawaii, and numerous other locales to relate how this family fulfilled a mission to provide leadership and service to its community. Exploring issues of class, intergenerational relations, and community activism, it provides a wealth of material on the black community that spans two centuries.
A particular value of Broussards' work is his account of how Stewart women coped with an overbearing patriarch and forged meaningful careers in an era when black females usually held menial jobs. By sharing experiences of both genders, he offers insights into the different strategies that black men and women used to meet their personal goals and collective obligations.
Intelligent, ambitious, and entrepreneurial, the Stewarts have much to tell us about what it was to be African-American over the last hundred years.
