Great Tips! Avoid Frustration; Save $ & Time.......2007-01-03

Bought this book to prepare for 2 week trip to Portugal & Spain. Used book for Seville & Granada. The book was easily worth several times its price for the tips re: where to park in Seville (underground, safe parking lots). Thanks to Rick, able to make fast, drop-in trip to see cathedral in Seville & avoid hassles.

Great for finding hotels.......2006-11-03

We used this book to find hotels in 5 cities on our recent trip to Spain. We were very happy with all of them. His recommendations tend to be smaller, locally-owned, colorful, very well located and good values. Two of the hotels even gave us a 10% "Rick Steves" discount - easily paying for the guidebook.
My only criticism of the book is that Steves understates the difficulty of driving in Spain. We found it especially difficult to navigate in the inner cities (where all our hotels were). Some driving tips (e.g., where to look for street signs) would be a welcome addition to the book. My advice: take the train.

Great planning guide.......2006-10-31

Rick Steve's style is engaging, making it fun to plan a trip and feel like a friend is giving you insider information. Great on travel tips but a bit brief on reference information - although visiting Steve's website before the trip helps a lot. Best used along with a deep reference guide like Fodor's.

We have just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Spain and Portugal, using the Rick Steves 2006 guides to those two countries. We also carried the Michelin Green Guide, and this was a good complementary pair. We appreciated the fact that Rick tells the reader: this museum is boring, another museum is underrated and worth visiting, the Costa del Sol is gridlock, etc. - in other words, he makes judgments and offers frank advice where other guidebooks are politely descriptive. Michelin has more detail and lists more places but makes fewer judgments.
We booked all our hotels based on Rick's recommendations (after checking them out on the web sites he lists). We found all of them to be very much as represented in the book. Also helpful: his suggestions for off-the-beaten-track restaurants, his walking tours and do-it-yourself museum guides, and concise practical info on how to reach train stations, connect to other towns, etc.
Occasionally we found some towns to be absent from the book. In these cases, we turned to Michelin. It seems clear that Steves has made a decision not to publish an encyclopedia of a given country but to focus selectively on the destinations that visitors are most likely to choose and to propose itineraries that work. True, it is odd that a city as large as Valencia is not included at all, but look at the map - it's not on the Barcelona/Madrid/Seville pathway.
Interestingly, we saw a number of people carrying the Steves guidebook in Spain. In a few cases, we struck up conversations because of it!
We would use the Rick Steves guides again and are impressed enough with his commitment to "the real Europe" that we are considering signing up for a Steves tour group of Europe in 2007.

Bundle with Party Spain.......2006-10-06

What a great guide. Rick Steve's told me so many chill, off the beaten path things to do in Spain and then I picked up my Party Spain guidebook and had the most fun and social days and nights. What a great combination of books.

I can't wait to go back.

If you are looking for a great, informative guide to the ins and outs of the country of Portugal, this book is for you! It has awesome insider tips on where to stay, eat, climate, costs...all updated annually...it even includes phone numbers of places to stay and whether or not they speak English...provides emails and websites and so much more!
My only complaint is that I would have liked more photos!
Overall, an excellent guide!

Rick Steves does it again. Great recommendations. The only quibble (why not a 5) is that Rick is so selective that he does not include places, such as Tomar, that may be off the beaten path but really do deserve a mention, if not a strong encouragement to visit. If you buy this book, or even if you don't, look at his website where there are updates and a "chat room" that help you plan a visit.

Could have been much, much better.......2006-03-07

I'm a dictionary junkie, especially those that delve into etymologies and usages. Who better to compile a speculative dictionary of terms on the edge of societal evolution than Popcorn -- whose name I've always loved. As a marketing guru, she has a pretty good record -- not perfect, but good -- of identifying up-and-coming trends; _The Popcorn Report_, now more than a decade old, is still a valuable look at a likely future. And there are any number of interesting trends identified in this volume -- like "wind farms" and "the death divide" and "starter castles" -- that have solidified just in the past few years. Though the actual pop phrases may have turned out differently, like "McMansions" instead of the third example above. Still, this book isn't as fascinating as it ought to be. It's rather dry and nerveless with very little of Popcorn's usual brio.

Faith Popcorn is a joke, but..........2005-04-07

The amazing thing about this book, and for that matter any book written by Faith Popcorn, is that she has somehow managed to successfully wring a career out of writing down any ridiculous thought that comes into her head and then compiling those ideas into a book and trying to fabricate legitimacy by asserting with pseudo-certainty that these things WILL happen. I believe her secret is that, along with all of her hare-brained ideas, she always throws in a few ideas that, while still somewhat in their infancy, have nevertheless already presented themselves and been written about. Thus she creates the illusion of correctly "predicting" trends. I have to give her credit though for being shrewd. As I said, she has managed to create her own little niche and built her "trend spotter, future predictor" house of cards on the fact that she has written books about them, so she MUST be an expert. I consider the woman a joke, but then again, she gets the last laugh all the way to the bank.

Very Short Shelf-Life.......2002-03-04

To keep it current this book would have made a better ongoing periodical. Popcorn must reside in a bubble, many of these terms and phrases were created out of whole cloth and just plain silly. I doubt the library will even carry this book as it will be outdated in short order.

I really did enjoy this and decided not to sell this book, it's a definite keeper. There is considerable more here than future jargon, substantial details are included of our immediate future workings based on superior foresight of current conditions. Yes, read this book, it will give you added delivery in your chat when the time comes.
If you are truly interested in future workings with this well balanced humor and realism read a phenom, Karl Mark Maddox's SB 1 or God.

MIXED BAG.......2002-01-21

I suspect some of these reviewers gave themselves five stars for finishing the book. I don't know how one reviews this collection of terms. All I can say is here is a mixed bag of terms, half of which should never have survived the cut. Way too many are already in current usage, (e.g., lucid dreaming, mother-of-all, rage, brownfields), way too many will never become generally used because they are nearly unpronounceable (e.g., participlaytion, bacterroria), others add nothing to existing terminology (e.g., boatominiums or floatominiums for house boats; relationshopping for relation shopping or relationship shopping--Is one very long word better than two short ones?) and there are far too many compounds, words strung together arbitrarily (e.g., socially irresponsible investing, self unfulfilling prophecies, driving Miss Daisy syndrome). Are they patronizing the reader?

I would like to have seen the www.web sites included in the index--there were at least fifty of them relied on and cited. In fact, if the truth were known, the internet was the principal source of half of the thousand terms listed. I would have liked to see the list cut in half, using only the most interesting terms (actual new terms, not those just abbreviated or strung together). Also the authors organized the words into 35 idiosyncratic chapters (e.g., Figures of Speech; Fear, Frustration & Desire; New Behaviors). I would have liked to see half that number of Chapters (e.g., ego surfing was placed in New Behaviors instead of in Internet or Computers. Three sections: Computers, Internet and Technology might have been combined into one).

As to the sections that tried to predict which new terms might catch on--really only a useless guessing game. These sections added very little to the book (e.g., fashion will become fash just as glamour has become glam is no doubt inevitable since both www.....com and www.....com are URL domain names now for sale on the internet). Dropping the last 3 letters to a word merely indicates how lazy some internet users are becoming. There is nothing new in knowing that.

24 Victorian Display Fonts CD-ROM and Book (Dover Electronic Display Fonts Series)

A great collection of fonts that's easy to download to the Mac. I was impressed that there were no filler fonts (poorly designed fonts included in a collection to make it appear that you are getting a better deal). All were well designed. Some were classic and others very unique to a particular genre of Victorian Type. We were looking for a font that looked like it would be in a medical advertisement and one that looked like it would appear on the cover of a horror story. We found both on this disk and they look genuine on our poster.

What Beauties!.......2006-12-01

These Victorian fonts were from a period of "anything goes" in type design and everyone will surely find some goodies here. Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. Some, you might already have, and some are so nice that I believe if you find one gem here, it makes the price worthwhile. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts.

A great resource for the cutting edge designer who want more choices in this currently fashionable font group (2006). Goes far beyond what is on either Mac or PC OS and reveals a treasure trove of standout designs.

CLASSIC STYLE AT BUDGET PRICE.......2001-11-06

The Victorians were responsible for some really hideous, over-decorated typeface designs - but you won't find them in this book. This Dover collection of 24 fine examples from the 19th century include many elegant faces deserving of more exposure, together with lightly-ornamented designs which recapture the charm of a bygone age. This isn't a reference book you'll leave on the shelf. The 24 faces are supplied as good quality Postscript and TrueType faces on CD-Rom. All have been deftly restored to their full glory - there are no broken kerns and worn hairlines with these little gems. My guess is that you'll find a use for most of them within a few months of receiving your copy. A must for any designer's library and a typographer's dream.

Includes Arboret. That should be enough enticement if you're truly a font freak. Pages have maps/grids/graphics to show you what characters are actually there. Sometimes a few dingbats are incl. Some (many?) western European (non-English) characters are absent.

Hope there will be a second set of Victorian fonts from Dover.

Great Idea Book and Reference for Southeast Landscaping.......2002-02-15

I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference.

Excellent! Clear instructions with great diagrams........1999-03-23

This book is an excellent guide for the new or veteran homeowner. It's filled with lots of ideas and a variety of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers and a few annuals. It offers a samples of typical planting scenarios for the home landscaper. Identifying each design as good for sun or shade and showing the variations is one of the best features. Seasonal variations are also helpful. But the best feature is that it clearly diagrams the placement of each plant including distance from the structure and distance from each other. Drawings and actual photographs of plants are also helpful. I highly recommend this book for the new or renovating landscaper.

I recently became interested in gardening (now that I have a yard in which I can plant). This is one of my favorite books on gardening and landscaping. Great resource for those of us living in the northeast. Full of wonderful photos, explanations and illustrations. It gives many ideas for addressing certain areas of your yard (i.e. front entryway, patio, rock wall). Explanations are excellent; I learned a great deal from this book. Very well written. Highly recommended.

Home Landscaping: Northeast Region is a very informative book filled with beautiful photos. I don't think I will need another book while doing our landscape planning. Landscaping designs, expected sizes of plants and trees and shrubs, different colors and species, how to's, this book will cover all your landscaping needs if you live in new england.

If you don't want to rely on your own creativity for landscaping your property, you need to check out this book. It features 54 landscape designs covering almost any situation, like entryways, streetwalk plantings, corner gardens, slopes, shady areas, woodland gardens, passageways, gardens under trees, mailbox plantings, etc. Every design is beautifully drawn and lists every plant that is included. The plants can then be looked up in the plant directory in the back of the book for more detailed information. An installation guide gives detailed instructions and helpful illustrations on how to build patios, pathways, trellises, gates, ponds, retaining walls, and more. The book also features detailed sections on other landscaping issues such as preparing the soil for planting, buying plants, planting basics, caring for plants, pruning roses, training a vine on a support, and caring for perennials (complete with a list of deer resistant plants). Highly recommended!

A great gardening book for beginners..........2007-06-18

I live in the Northeast and am a novice gardener. This book is great because it gives you a lot of different garden plans, and let's you see what plants look good together and work well together in similar conditions. I also like that it shows a lot of the garden plans in different seasons, and in some cases shows you what your garden will look like when you plant it, then in five years, or ten years down the road.

The book has a great index so you can cross reference and see the same plant in different gardens, and there's a great reference section at the end that tells you all about each plant. It also has one of the best sections I've seen on preparing your garden for planting.

The Stone Pillow is a personal account of the triumphs and tragedies of a family affected by large-scale historical events: Nazism, the Holocaust, World War II, and the founding of the State of Israel. This book describes the struggle of Jona Lerman and the other co-founders of the State of Israel to preserve, protect, and defend a land far away from a war-torn Europe and a discriminatory civil society. While accomplishing that goal might involve smuggling illegal refugees or hiding guns in a toilet, their eyes were always on the prize.

At a deeper level, the book depicts a tangible shift in consciousness over the twentieth century. In the first chapter, when three Jewish men damage the ritual bathhouse in their small Polish hometown of Tomaszov (so that their non-believer friend Asher might be buried in a respectable Jewish plot), we may laugh at the fact that the rabbi and many others believed that God was the source of the "miracle." The reader of today would tend to uphold a more secular viewpoint, that is, to examine first whether or not other human beings have been responsible for the damage before attributing it to mystical causes.

But the modern point-of-view is not to be necessarily taken for granted. Recent social thought has been affected by progress in scientific and technological knowledge as well as its evil twin, the misuse of this knowledge. Both human creations have, in large measure, propelled our belief system from a largely "God-centered universe" to a more secular, human-oriented frame of reference. However, this shift in consciousness does not mean that there is no middle ground between the two.

Hence lies another interpretation of the ritual bathhouse story.

Perhaps the three young men who did the damage were actually acting on behalf of God. While their impish behavior and self-congratulatory tone may reveal their desire to thumb their noses at the authorities of the day, it is equally likely that they may have had a "superior" understanding of Jewish tradition in contrast to the official religious arbiters. While the truth can never be known, this seeming parable makes it appear likely that God could intervene indirectly in human affairs through the medium of concrete individuals who may or may not be divinely inspired, and with or without their complicity.

While many Jewish thinkers have traditionally believed that the Jews ought not to return to Israel until the Messiah is present, Jona Lerman and other practical-minded individuals nevertheless decided that they must make a home in Palestine before the Messiah's arrival. We will never know whether the founding of the State of Israel was part, or will be part, of a divine plan (as some believe) or whether its founding was a solely human creation. From a religious perspective, what is even more elusive is discovering whether and how concrete individuals contributing to this effort may or may not be working God's will. But from a secular perspective, Jona Lerman's personal account allows us some insight into how these brave men and women forged a unique place for themselves in Israeli and world history by bucking orthodox religious thought and customs.

One thing that Jona understood over the years is that there is a middle-ground between the secular and the religious, between reason and faith. Like the three young men who committed acts of vandalism in the small Polish town, Jona and his fellows may have had a "superior" understanding of Jewish tradition: in this particular case, they took the practical road that allowed themselves, their families, and their companions to survive within a world gone awry. Hence, this intimate portrait of Jona and his family-from their escape from Europe to their caring for a seriously ill child in the United States-not only helps us to discover the ways in which people can make history and history can make people but also presents us with the raw material that allows us to examine the nature of history itself.

A Rewarding Emotional and Cerebral Reading Experience.......2000-07-23

Israel's problems and dilemmas are begging for solutions that seem just out of reach. THE STONE PILLOW is a memoir of Jona Lerman who, in 1934, left Poland and went to Palestine to help recreate a Jewish state. His experiences in the defense forces and as a laborer are related in a compelling human drama that move beyond the historical content, and the reader begins to understand the devastation wrought by religious fanaticism, territorial disputes, and the hostile feelings of Arab foes and friends. Jona proves to be a selfless, ingenious man who made "penny soup" out of wilted greens, carried 80-pound sacks of flour on his back to help feed the hungry during the 1948 siege of Jerusalem, and who remained devoted to Israel even after coming to live in the United states. THE STONE PILLOW is an entertaining and thoughtful saga, masterfully written by Arlene Kurtis, who translated Jona's memoirs into a gripping, timely narrative.

In a time when the entire world was locked in the turmoil of World War II and all attention was turned to the unspeakable acts that the Nazi's were committing, a group of pioneers built a country. This book tells a story that is seldom told... one which needs to be remembered and applauded. A handful of people held together by a common belief built a nation which stands today as an ongoing symbol of Jewish pride. When I read the story of this man, I was able to understand the struggle to build a nation and the bond that they maintain with it to this day. The Stone Pillow serves as a tribute to a man who has led a remarkable life, endured so many hardships, and lost so much... but was able to endure and give birth to a family, a country, and an ideal (Zionism) for generations to come.

A Wonderful Inspirational Life Story.......2000-07-04

The Stone Pillow is an interesting biography of Jona Lerman, a Jewish man whose life story spans some important events of the 20th Century. Born into an orthodox wealthy Jewish family in Poland in the early 1900's, he chose to go to Palestine as a pioneer to help establish the Jewish State of Israel. While there he fought in the Haganah, married and had two children. The family he left behind in Poland were killed in concentration camps. Almost devestated when his son contracted Polio, he brought his wife and children to the U.S. to avail his son of the latest treatments. The trials and tribulations of the Lerman Family as immigrants in the U.S. are climaxed by Jona's return to Israel to fight when the country went to war. Co-author Arlene Kurtis did a fine job of making this book interesting reading for all ages. From seniors who have lived through this period of time, to young students who need to learn more about the difficulties of the century, all will find this book very stirring. I enjoyed reading it very much.
