Perfect comprehension workbook for the emerging reader........1998-11-17
Claws and Paws is the second in a series of reading comprehension books by Steck-Vaughn. It is aimed at the primary reader who can read at about the grade one/two level. It takes the reader progressively through more and more difficult questions about the stories just read as it works through stories 1-16. It combines multiple choice, sequencing, vocabulary matching, and follow the direction types of questions. It asks for an all round thinking process. The questions avoid being inferencial and the focus is on direct, objective answers that can be found in the story. The stories are usually interesting and approximately one page long or less. The questions for each story ask for approximately 25 answers.

Underestimated biography of escape from Thailand.......2001-07-07
Western people do not understand much of the Eastern mind. This book is an opportunity to peek into the way the Eastern mind works and how it is adapted for survival in circumstances that are unknown and often unreal for the Westerner. It describes the life of the writer, a Thai woman, from childhood via a life as prostitute, up to her escape to Europe and marriage to a German. It is a tale of the struggle for self-respect that eventually can't be found in a country that lost all respect for its own people. Using her bad situation in a positive way, she manages to gain her self-respect as a woman again, but only after many years in Europe. The book is unusually frank, even to Northern European standards, and seems to be genuine. E.g. she describes how she lured the German into love and marriage, what mental and sexual tricks were played on him. Although not a literary masterwork, it is far better written than one could expect from a girl that has been exploited by others all her life and did not have time for education.

Europe by Eurorail.......2007-07-23
For the first time Euro-traveler by rail, this book can take the guess work out of the train system in Europe. However, after spending a month in Europe, and with hindsight, I'm not sure this book has enough Useable information that warrants its cost.
Many of the other euro-guide books will cover at least a small section on trains. Besides, there is not much to know about them in Europe other than where the train is located in the city you visit, and what time your train departs.
This book did help discuss a few of the limitations of the trains and it did help a little with rail travel. It barely eeks out 3 out of 5 stars.
Not Comprehensive.......2006-02-19
I was a little disappointed with this guidebook. However, I could see that this book was meant for a different audience. My basic plan was to use long-distance trains for travel between major European cities. This book doesn't cover that type of travel. The aim of this book is to provide numerous day trips outside of major cities, so I was disappoint to find that there is almost no information about major cities, and only a little information about international train travel. Instead, you get a lot of information about minor sights outside of major cities. I would recommend this to those who are actually living in Europe. In other words, those who have seen everything in the city and are looking for something else to see. Also, backpackers who are spending months in Europe might find this useful when they run out of things to do. However, those who only have a week or two in Europe may not find this useful at all. Be sure that you're the intended audience before you buy this. If you'd like a book about international train travel in Europe, perhaps "Europe By Rail" would be a better choice.

Book Description
Understanding Your International Students surveys the school cultures of the many countries whose students top the international student enrollment lists in the U.S. educational institutions. No other volume so comprehensively addresses the educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the international students who are studying in English-speaking countries.
Understanding Your International Students is an excellent resource for all schools--it's designed to sensitize users to the myriad differences that exist among schools and students around the world, to pique interest in deeper cultural exploration, and to provide encouragement and support for effective cross-cultural problem-solving. For each country profiled, the following information is provided:
a statistical profile
a deep culture summary
a table providing information related to school calendars, curricula, exams, grades, homework, and classroom set-up
section on educational policy, teaching style, learning style, instructional setting, after-school activities, discipline and class management, teacher-student and student-student relationships, non-verbal behavior, images, forms of address, dress, polite/impolite topics and behaviors, and gift-giving
problem/solution scenarios that address challenges specific to the classroom and the student population described.
Information about five additional countries is available on our website: www.press.umich.edu/esl/uyis/.

A Must Have Resource.......2005-05-11
I was really pleased when a colleague suggested this book to me. In the past I'd been fortunate enough to work with only one or two cultural groups at a time, but this year I have students from all over the world. I had questions, but not enough time to do the necessary research to find out even basic information for such a wide variety of nationalities. This book did the work for me. The info. is concise and easily accessible, even offering brief paragraphs on how education differs in the native lands of my students. It helped arm me for what my students might be expecting, as well as what I might expect. I'm hoping a future edition will include a section on the Hmong. Otherwise, perfect!
Absolutely necessary!.......2003-05-17
This book is simply necessary for anyone who is in contact with internationals. I read this book and the information I have found has helped me understand so many things about international students and in general people from other countries and backgrounds.

Simple & Sweet.......2006-12-29
This book is wonderful for those who are into puppies in general. This is a great learning guide for children, or people of any age that can appreciate the playful innocence of young pups. This book as an informative reference falls somewhat short, but gives a decent overview of each breed. Each page has a generous amount of pictures of a specific breed of puppy, then a picture of the corresponding breed as an adult, which is nice. The photographs are well taken and the silly poses the puppies fall into will definitly draw a smile or laugh from any reader. It's undeniably adorable and a fun book to have on the shelf. Caution: this book will create an overwhelming desire to buy a dog! ;)
good puppy stuff, ignore the zoolgist.......2005-03-14
The information about the various puppies is fairly simple and probably a good start for deciding which breeds to look into.
The pictures are excellent.
The text by "Tadaaki Imaizumi, zoologist" makes me question whether the person actually has a degree. Unlike the authors claims, dogs do indeed share morphological traits with wolves, seeing as how dogs technically share some morphological traits with humans.
The information about raising puppies at the back of the books is also fairly helpful.
If children are reading the book, especially ones interested in dogs and wolves, parents may need to explain that, contrary to what the book seems to imply, dogs are indeed canids. Not just descended from them but are actually in the Canidae family.
Following in the pawprints of "Legacy of the Dog"..........2004-12-28
Several years ago I bought "Legacy of the Dog"; yesterday, I bought "Legacy of the Puppy," having instantly recognized it as the follow-up to the first--same style, same beautiful glossy book, another picture of a terrier on the cover (this time Airedale instead of Irish). The primary reason I like this book is that it's a good one to coo over with your dog-loving friends; normally we don't get to see much of what all these breeds look like as puppies. At least, not all in one book. Not as many breeds are represented, but with over 200 pages, enough of them are, and not all are AKC-recognized. Basically, every set of pages shows pictures of a mother dog with a variety of beautiful, representative-of-breed puppies around with their ages next to them; most of the breeds follow this general format. The text is essentially the same as you'd find in any dog-breed book but is useful nonetheless; I haven't found major errors in it so far. The text also centers, of course, around the puppies of each breed but also covers what they will likely grow up to be and what to expect. Also, it includes new features like words from actual owners of each puppy breed, offering insight into what it's like to really live with one, & a handy 'diseases by breed' chart.
Looking through these pages and choosing a puppy based on which one you think is cutest is NOT the way to do it and not what the book's intended for, but when used responsibly, or just for fun, it's a great book. The maltese, Great dane, and Brittany puppies look just like my current dogs when they were tiny. My very favorite breeds--afghan hounds, borzois, salukis, and Bedlington terriers--are all represented. The book is wonderful for seeing the whimsy and curiosity of young puppies. Some of the pictures are truly excellent; the little border collies and beagles and Irish setters, for instance, are gorgeous. The Dachshunds are portrayed in a variety of uncommon and common colors, including my favorite adorable long-haired brown and blue merle combination. The Lakeland terrier 'group shot' looks like they're all smiling. One of the 55-day-old Akita puppies looks like Angel from "Lady and the Tramp 2," proving how seeing the puppy version of a breed can change your perception of how a dog will look full-grown; I'd never considered her an Akita pup before! The husky pups have sapphire blue eyes, the Shiba Inus play with pinecones, one of the French bulldogs has the greatest expression on, the Bichons and Schipperkes are precious--well, they all are, ne?
This book is the ultimate look at the cute, happy playfulness of puppies. The kind you leave out and guests will want to go through. It's great, I recommend it.

Move over Pat the Bunny! Touch and Feel Puppy wants to play, too. In this small, sturdy DK board book, full of irresistible puppy photographs, it's the dogs who do the talking: "I love people tickling my fluffy tummy." (And it is indeed delightfully fluffy.) "I like chewing this fuzzy slipper," says another one, between mouthfuls of a very realistic-feeling blue fuzzy slipper. A puppy's world is full of textures, and young children will adore exploring all of them. (Warning: It's only a matter of time until your kids will want the real thing!) (Baby to preschool)

Great Book!.......2007-07-04
Our young son loves this story and wants to hear it over and over again. The pictures are cute and it's an all around great book.
Nice book!.......2007-06-10
My 14 month old Loves his puppy book. He likes feeling the different textures and giggles at the puppies!
Sturdy construction even for a teething baby...
Another great book in the Touch and Feel Series-my toddler loves it!.......2006-02-27
My toddler loves any Touch and Feel book-he got his first for Easter last year and I think there's only 4 or 5 we don't have yet. They're sturdy and a great size for toddlers to read, we even throw a couple in the diaper bag when we're out. They're short enough to keep a toddler's attention and filled with bright photographs of familiar things and simple, easy to read concepts. Although as some people have mentioned on this or other books reviewed, they do have some repititous textures and ideas, but I think that most toddlers won't care about that-mine doesn't anyway-he loves them.
He loves "doggies" in general, so really enjoys this one a lot. He really likes the fluffy tummy, silky ear, and leathery noses, but enjoys the whole book. He loves any of them with animals, but this Puppy one is a favorite. I'd recommend this or most any other of the Touch and Feel series, especially if your toddler loves this kind of hands on reading experience like mine does!
My favorite baby gift........2005-01-13
I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.
Now, whenver I know anyone who has had a baby, these books (as many as I can find) are my gift.
Julie Clark Robinson, author of Live in the Moment
Perfect for dog-loving kids.......2005-01-11
I got this book as a hand-me-down from a friend, whose 4-year-old and 2-year-old boys had failed to destroy it. That alone says a lot about the durability of this book, and its tactile pieces. My son, who is 16 months, loves this book. He likes to touch all the different tactile pieces: the furry puppy chest (my son's favorite), the silky dog ears, the fuzzy slipper, the rubber ball (my least favorite), and the leathery puppy noses (my favorite). The pictures are adorable. There aren't many words per page, so the book might lose its appeal for older, more experienced readers. But it's great for younger kids (under 4).

Book Description
Gardening is considered a contemplative, gentle pastime, but it makes many demands on the human body. The 21 yoga positions in this colorful guide are intended to energize gardeners so they can enjoy planting, mulching, digging, and harvesting without the aching back and sore knees. The first section, “Breaking Ground,” emphasizes warming up the spine and gently engaging the hips, back, and neck. Section two, “Planting Seeds,” focuses on standing and balancing poses. The last section, “Harvest,” covers relaxation, elongating tired muscles, and refocusing the spirit. Yoga balances the central nervous system, tones and cleanses the internal organs, strengthens the circulatory system, and promotes an overall sense of well-being and contentment. This guide draws on that ancient discipline to transform taxing activities — from crawling between rows to weed and squatting for hours to plant seedlings to digging out new beds and watering — into rituals of rejuvenation for mind, body, and spirit.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Book.......2006-12-10
I love to garden and I have fibromyalgia. This book has yoga that I can do.
She even shows how to modify "Downward Facing Dog" so that now I can do it.
Gardening and yoga do go together and this is the only book I have found that
combines the two. The illustrations are outstandingly beautiful. If this author wrote another yoga book for the very beginner, I would buy it. I will also look for books with the same illustrator. This is not for someone who regularyly practices yoga - It is for somone who wants to incorporate yoga into their life but they are not flexible enough for a beginner tape. It is also a routine in short segments. I want to get outside to "play" not spend an hour missing a sunny morning. This book has moves to do before you go outside, moves during your gardening and moves after. THANK YOU VERONICA FOR THIS LOVELY BOOK! ---Peggy

Very well done! Way to engage the reader!.......2004-10-26
I love this book because as I 'journey' through it's pages it becomes a living testimant to what he is teaching. He plays with the layout of the text in a playful yet informative and engaging way.
Another thing is his obvious preference for 'teach by example'. Instead of trying to force the reader to wade through miles of bla, bla text he drops that approach entirely. Instead, the reader is granted endless exposure to examples and graphics.
Also, I'm impressed by the way he's formulated his literature. Even though the book is about the visual side of life he's able to bring the information alive in constantly conjuring up visuals as one reads through the book.
Overall, very informative and educational in a fun engaging sort of way. Nicely done!
Great Discovery.......2004-01-14
We used this book in college web design classes. Very useful for color design choices as to what color schemes work, and what dosn't work on a web page. You cant help but learn something from this book. You will be susprised as to what color combinations work well together. Two thumbs up!
OK....BUT...........2003-05-28
One reviewer said it, aimed to graphic designers but can help web developers.
It is OK, the book is mostly examples of colors and text. Can be used as a reference book but I wouldn't say I learned anything new or gained anything from this book.
Really enjoyed the indepth resources within this volume.......2002-10-13
I have enjoyed reading this book and applying the different techniques on various Motion Graphic Video Productions. I highly recommend buying this book!
Greg Reyes / Producer / DVCreations.tv
Aimed at graphic designers, but still useful for web dev.......2002-06-28
This book starts off with a brief introduction to type, colour theory and factors which influence legibility. Then there is a rather large section with examples of different combinations of background and foreground hue, value and saturation, with comments about what works, and why. There are sections on both obeying and breaking basic typographical rules. Lots of well commented examples in the last section of the book. I liked this book. It has a nice layout, and insightful comments. The examples are good, but print-based. Still, as an introductory book to colour, type and legibility, it could prove useful to web developers as well.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but flawed.......2003-07-21
Many samples for non-mainstream sites. A lot of these interestingly designed web sites have bad UI though.

Working with Computer Type: Color and Type is a handsome, full-color guide that provides digital artists with many examples of successful combinations of color and type. The book first teaches color-related concepts such as hue, value, and saturation, and then explores the issues of color contrast. Almost half of the text is dedicated to displaying colored text on colored backgrounds with primary, secondary, tertiary, monochromatic, and achromatic colors. These pages are indispensable for helping you develop effective color palettes for your work. Working with Type also shows many real-world examples of great-looking type and color, including a book cover, brochure, catalog, CD package, magazine, and poster.
