*I* had this coloring book 25 years ago!.......2001-12-05
So I ordered it for my three year old, who loves animals. This is one of the best quality coloring books on the market - the paper is not pulp paper but a slightly glossier white paper, so it is superb for both crayons AND markers! The pictures brought back many memories and feature some animals you won't see in other coloring books, plus you get the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting such a worthy organization. I HIGHLY recommend this coloring book even for older kids (I think I was about five when I had it), who may just be inspired to go learn more about the animals featured therein.

Book Description
The definitive book on Kurtis championship cars, showcasing all 111 full-size 'champ' cars that Frank Kurtis built between 1941 and 1963. Most of these cars were built specifically to race at Indianapolis. In fact, Kurtis' cars won the Indianapolis 500 five years out of six (1950-1955), and dominated the starting field from 1950 through 1958. Kurtis pioneered the 'roadster' design, in which the engine was offset in the car, allowing the driver to sit much lower, reducing the height of the car and thus wind resistance. Roadsters were the last front-engine cars before the 1965 rear-engine revolution, and they are remembered with much nostalgia. Also see engineering drawings of the cars as well as dramatic starting field photos and crash photos. An appendix detailing car and engine serial numbers will add to your enjoyment.

Indianapolis Racing Cars of Frank Kurtis 1941-1963.......2007-01-25
An average book, with good B/W photo's, but little information on the man behind the cars! Good statistics on models, years and owners!

The Best book!!.......2007-10-01
Love the book, first borrowed it from my local library. The binding does tend to crack with much use, so I broke my book's binding and put all the pages in clear cover sheets in a 3 ring binder. Cost a little more but it was worth it because now I don't have to worry about destroying it and my book will last a lot longer. I found this book the most helpful in explaining how to do the signs as well as illustrating them in very clear photos. I highly recommend!!!
An amazing book!.......2007-09-30
Before buying this, I ran into the author at the MET Museum in NYC on an interpreted tour one Friday night. He was very personable and I decided to purchase it. I am glad I did. Very well researched with tidbits on deaf history/culture/etiquette, along with actual pictures of signs (rather than hard-to-see drawings) that show good facial expressions. Overall, a real pleasure and find!
Best Book To Sign.......2007-06-14
This is the best book I have found to learn to sign.
I kept the copy from the library checked out for so long, and kept going overdue, and was wearing it out, I figured I'd best go ahead and purchase my own copy.
I tried other books, but they were useless to me.
I purchased a dvd set from amazon, but the dvd set was horrible - and if your looking for sign dvd's, you'll see which one (set) I warn you about.
A couple copies of this book (you'll will wear this hvy duty book out - from much use) or a hard bound edition will get you communicating w/ your deaf friend quickly - but you have to study.
Money well spent.
sign for dummies.......2007-06-08
Very helpful in learning the sign language. The use of photo and memory hint is excellent. We have tried other material and find this one easier and more conducive to memory retention.
Best sign language book.......2007-01-15
This is the best sign language book that is in print at the moment. It is very easy to use and my Instructor loves it as well!

Celtic Frames and Borders CD-ROM by Mallory Pearce.......2007-02-11
Book has been enjoyed by my husband. The book was in excellent condition.
Disappointing.......2003-12-08
The images in this production are to Celtic illustration what imitation crab meat is to the real thing. Sad to say the quality of the images are just a couple of steps above cartoon art. Also disappointing is the fact that the images were scanned at 300 x 300 dpi. In this day and age, when many printers are cranking out 2,500 dpi, this low level of scanning leaves a lot to be desired. I have purchased other Dover products in the past and have been very pleased. The purchase of this book is one I regret.

Re-inventing the Wheel.......2006-11-20
While this book has some excellent information, much of it is a rehash of many other excellent dog raising and training books. The authors keep tossing up a squeaky-tog boogieman -- dog training by harsh methods -- methods that haven't been current in over twenty years. However, I would have rated the book at 3 stars if it weren't for the fact that the authors state that "there are many pet stores that guarantee the dogs they sell and are extremely responsible in choosing where their dogs come from." This is on page 65, where they actually imply that a pet store is "responsible" if it gets its puppies from a USDA licensed dealer. This is appallingly bad advice. It is NEVER a good idea to buy a dog from a pet store, unless you don't mind supporting puppy mills.
Happy owners, happy dogs - a handy guide for new and old dog owners alike and their pups.......2006-06-07
I wish I'd had this handy guide when we first adopted our dogs from a rescue group. I know I wouldn't consider adopting a dog again without rereading this book first. This book has helped us have a better relationship with our dogs. We've been able to work with them to change behaviors that were annoying us. We used this book's problem solving tools to help our dogs understand when barking was welcome (to scare away potential intruders) and when it was not welcome (when the mailman was delivering our mail). We worked with them to make our walks comfortable rather than a struggle to keep moving by giving them time at the middle of the walk to sniff around the neighborhood. We retrained our dogs using this book's step by step method for success. We felt great about using the "kind and firm approach" described in this book. We're all happier, and I will continue to recommend this book to all dog owners. Whether you've had your dog forever (or what seems like forever like me) or you're considering adopting a dog, this innovative "guide to raising a happy, well-trained dog" gives you tips on everything from choosing the best dog to fit your personality to pinpointing problems and correcting undesirable behaviors. I found expert advice on choosing a good breeder, finding a great veterinarian, traveling with our dogs, leaving our dogs at a kennel, and pup-proofing our home.
An informative and "pet owner friendly" guide to selecting and training the perfect dog for a family.......2006-05-07
Collaboratively authored by the team of Lynn Lott, Jane Nelsen, and animal behaviorist Therry Jay, Pup Parenting: A Guide To Raising A Happy, Well-Trained Dog is an informative and "pet owner friendly" guide to selecting and training the perfect dog for a family. Providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the many and varying canine breeds, Pup Parenting can be invaluable in determining which one is best for a particular family, as well as assessing the personality of the new doggy pal, and curing the immediate obedience troubles which might be encountered. Pup Parenting diligently and knowledgeably carries its readers through the wonderful world of canine companion ownership and the positive effects which dogs might have on familial relationships. Pup Parenting is very highly recommended for all readers wanting to make sound and informed decisions with respect to puppy selection and care for themselves and their families.
bad dog to good.......2006-03-20
Rebeccasreads highly recommends PUP PARENTING as an instructive & entertaining guide into the modern ways of raising loving & responsible canine companions.
Gone are the "leader of the pack-rule by dominance & fear" ways of the past. Now it's all about who REALLY needs the training -- or re-training -- & how to transform your over-indulged, out-of-control family member by first & foremost looking at how YOU behave!
With a firm & affectionate attitude the authors cover everything from puphood to caring for your beloved friend at the end.
They also involve you, the reader, by asking you to "step back" & take some long & serious looks at how you run your home life & your family members. Don't worry, there are many funnily dreadful tales & lots of gladsome successes that will have you wagging your tail!

a useful resource for applique, embroidery, or even beadwork.......2005-08-31
while this book is not as fabulous as the author's first, _quilitng patterns from native american designs_, it is a wide-ranging group of line drawings based on the beadwork of many north, central and south american tribes.
this isn't a picture or pattern book, it is a design resource for the quilter who wants to produce something out-of-the-ordinary--combining the designs in this book with those in the first would result in beautiful, unusual quilts.
the designs could also be embroidered, extending the usefulness of the book.

I was very disappointed in this book. The first time from Amazon this has happened. The amount of colored plates was very minimal.I did not like the way the book was laid out. I was wxpecting more illustrations and patterns in color. And more patterns. period.

Book Description
Garden Lunacy: A Growing Concern is a dead-on, laugh-out-loud look at the world of gardening, especially the world between each gardener's ears. The author pokes fun at the way they think, their odd habits, skewed view of the universe, and their inevitable confrontations with what the author calls, the "other human sub-species," namely, non-gardeners. In a continuous stream of colorful scenes, you'll be taken into a world inhabited by gardeners of all levels, from non-gardening "gardeners" to eccentric, covetous, and compulsive gardeners.
Most of all, you'll burst out laughing as Art Wolk shares his views on horticulture and describes his own oddball behavior as an award-winning writer, gardener, lecturer, photographer, and flower show exhibitor. From his vantage point as a lifelong gardener and horticultural voyeur, he gives gardeners an unforgettably accurate look at their domain.
Garden Lunacy is the perfect gift for gardeners of all levels of experience and looniness.
Customer Reviews:
A deftly amusing celebration of a widely beloved hobby and the people who embrace it.......2005-12-09
Garden Lunacy: A Growing Concern is an utterly irreverent gardening book. Not intended as an instructional about raising plants or gardens (though the astute reader will acquire many tips on what not to do!), Garden Lunacy offers sharp-tongued wit and humor about the unique manner in which gardeners see the universe: plants first, humans last. Eccentric, covetous, even compulsive gardener traits are explored with a wink and a smile, sure to sound a sympathetic chuckle in plant lovers everywhere. A deftly amusing celebration of a widely beloved hobby and the people who embrace it.
Gardeners: Their Lunacy Revealed.......2005-09-05
As a non-gardener who hates plants (all they do is give me allergic reactions!) and has no interest in gardening, I was as eager to read this book as most youngsters are to eat their vegetables. But I gave it a try, and what a pleasant surprise!
The author, a reknowned horticulturist who has won many awards for his gardening talents, demonstrates an uncanny ability to accurately depict the neuroses of gardeners as seen through the eyes of non-gardeners like myself. Wolk's stories about his frantic escapades while competing at the Philadelphia Flower Show, his battles with the local animal life threatening his plants, and his obsessive yearning to build compost piles had both me and my non-gardening wife laughing out loud.
What I thought would be a laborious book to read turned out to be a real page-turner. This was a very entertaining, fun book.
Laughing through the pages.......2005-04-12
It's been a long time since a book made me laugh out loud and this book does it over and over again. I found myself reading it aloud to my husband so that he would understand why I was giggling while reading a book on gardening. You don't have to even like plants to love this book. Art Wolk is the Dave Barry of the garden.
You'll Never See The Flower Show The Same Way Again.......2005-02-28
I've been attending the Philadelphia Flower Show for many years. From this day on, after finishing Garden Lunacy, I'll see the exhibits through an entirely different set of eyes. The way Art Wolk describes the frenzied pace and crazy antics associated with entering pots for judging in the flower show is hilarious.
Very Funny.......2005-01-30
Garden Lunacy is not a typical gardening book. The book is less about the plants, and more about the gardener, or as Art Wolk puts it 'the thing at the wooden end of the shovel'.
The name Art Wolk is perhaps familiar to many people, specifically those who attend the Philadelphia Flower Show. Art has won many Blue Ribbons at the show as well as Best in Show. However, he also has a very witty style of writing about his fellow gardening enthusiasts. Tales of travel problems in a late snowstorm with a car full of plants, an apartment overflowing with seedlings or plants, and a marijuana plant carefully being tended by a gardener in a public garden. These, and other logistical nightmares of the horticulturalist, fill the chapters. Of particular note is the area regarding a Gardener/Non-Gardener translation section that will help to clear up many of those misunderstood signals that pass between the two identities, not to mention bring a nod and a smile to many of us who have `been there, done that'. The book is indeed a wonderful remedy to help pass those rather tedious days of late winter when it is too early to dig, or the dog days of summer when it is too hot and humid to dig.

[Testimonials]
"The ultimate typographic tool: a concise, beautiful book that pulls together everything you need to produce great typography."
--Frank Romano, RIT School of Print Media
"Clear and elegant...There's no better or more useful introduction to the whole craft of typography."
--Roger Black, Danilo Black, Inc.
"All you've always wanted to know about type and typography but never dared to ask. Jim Felici brings together a vast amount of knowledge in this book. Must-have!"
--Erik Spiekermann, author, Stop Stealing Sheep (and Find Out How Type Works)
This book is about how type should look and how to make it look that way; in other words, how to set type like a professional. It releases the craft knowledge that used to reside almost exclusively in the heads of people working in type shops. The shops are gone, the technologies have changed, but the goal remains the same. This book explains in very practical terms how to use today's computerized tools to achieve that secret of good design: well-set type.
Beautifully designed and richly illustrated,
The Complete Manual of Typography is an essential reference for anyone who works with type. Designers, print production professionals, and corporate communications managers can go straight to the index to find focused answers to specific questions, while educators and students can read it as a textbook from cover to cover. You'll find:
- History, basic concepts, and anatomy of good typography, concisely presented and indexed for quick reference by busy professionals.
- Straight-ahead instructions for how to manage fonts, handle corrupted or missing fonts, and find the characters you need.
- Clear, useful explanations of what makes good type good (and bad type bad) .
- Detailed guidance on controlling the fundamentals of type, including measure, point size, leading, kerning, and hyphenation and justification.
- Practical advice on how to fix and avoid composition problems such as loose lines, bad rags, widows and orphans.
- Hard-to-find rules for managing indents and alignments, skews, wraps, expert-set characters, and tables.
- Scores of workarounds that show how to wring good type out of uncooperative word-processing and layout programs.

Ron Brown: An Uncommon Life
ASIN: 0688153208 |
Amazon.com
In his introduction to this book, President Bill Clinton praises the late Ron Brown for his revitalization of both the Democratic Party and the Department of Commerce. With a blend of personal reminiscence and journalistic detail, his daughter Tracey shows how Brown lived up to Clinton's description.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Brown became arguably the most powerful African-American in American politics through his stewardship of the Democratic National Committee. While George Bush's approval ratings soared through the roof, and his reelection in 1992 seemed a foregone conclusion, Brown worked tirelessly behind the scenes to unite the party, playing a crucial role in Bill Clinton's victory. He was powerful enough to negotiate with Clinton over exactly which Cabinet post he would accept; acquaintances suggest that he had his eyes on the long-term goal of becoming the first African-American president.
In his role as Secretary of Commerce, Brown built upon the legacy of his work at the National Urban League under Whitney M. Young Jr., fighting to make opportunities for economic improvement available not only to all Americans, but to other participants in the global economy. It was on a trade mission to Croatia that Brown died in a fatal plane crash.
Tracey L. Brown takes the opportunity to celebrate her father's life and refute critics who, during the tenure of his Cabinet post and after his death, have leveled demonstrably false charges of corruption against him. She also recounts the efforts of her family and relatives of the other 34 victims of the crash to obtain explanations for what went wrong; in addition, she deals with the persistent rumors that Brown's death was an assassination rather than an accident due to Air Force negligence.
Book Description
The Life and Times of Ron Brown is a memoir by Tracey L Brown, daughter of the late Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown, who died in a plane crash on April 3, I996. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Harlem, Ron Brown grew up the beloved only child of a middle-class family in Harlem Hotel Theresa. He was the first black admitted to his fraternity, the first to serve as an officer in his army unit, the first to head a national political party and the first black commerce secretary. He rose to a top position at National Urban League, and later was deputy campaign manager for Senator Edward Kennedy and then Chief Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was Jesse Jackson's manager at the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta and assumed the leadership of the Democratic National Committee in 1989. Under his stewardship, the Democratic party won the White House in 1992 for the first time in twelve years. As Commerce Secretary, Brown used his Cabinet position to stimulate American exports and international trade relations. On the home front, he initiated a vast expansion of high-tech research and development to help speed the introduction of new technology. Ron Brown was a close friend and political confidant of President Clinton.Ron Brown was also a loving father who taught his son and daughter that no matter what happened in life, they were never to give up. This book not only provides a historical record of his life, but also offers an intimate family portrait of what it was like for Ron Brown to be a super-achiever in a white-dominated country.
