5 out of 5 stars A memoir of a remarkable young woman among remarkable animals.......2007-07-31

I just finished the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Joyce Poole blends delightful anecdotes of her interactions with elephants, her scientific findings, and her work to stem the tide of elephant poaching with the joys, heartbreaks, sacrifices, and harrowing experiences of a single woman living and working in Africa.

1 out of 5 stars CONSERVATION BUREAUCRAT COMES OF AGE.......2004-12-06

This book is mostly about Joyce Poole & her personal trials & tribulations. I did not learn anything new about elephants, but rather more about the lengths to which the author was driven to gain a prominent position in conservation bureaucracy;
for example, deeply resenting exclusion from all the globe-trotting conferencing going on around the plight of the elephant, & stung by the reason given that her research into elephant communications was irrelevant to conservation, she abandons the research, "betrays" her mentor -- Cynthia Moss -- & goes to count elephants in order to prove that the widespread slaughter of adults for their tusks leads to an overall decline in the group's reproductive rate. Wow. She provides a very good example of how money spent with good intentions is usually wasted on the recipients.

5 out of 5 stars a touching memoir..............2000-07-29

When I finished reading this book, it made me burst into tears...for such a long time, I've never read a book that was so touching and unforgettable. I love elephants so much and after reading this book. It bring me more courage to boycott those merchants who sell ivory......very impressive work and worthy of reading again and again...

5 out of 5 stars educational and entertaining.......1999-10-25

I enjoyed this book very much! I learned alot about elephants and their habitat. I feel I got to know the elephants personally from the info and stories that Joyce gave on all of them. I feel this book will give a reader insight on the elephants, lives, loves and servival.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful glance into the life of a caring person.......1998-09-03

This is a well-written and wonderfully insightful glance into the lives of elephants. If you are interesting in learning more about the hidden lives of elephants this is the book. Her story was both enthralling and insightful. I salute her for her work in getting the elephant listed on the endangered list; trying to prevent the slide of elephants into possible extinction. I cried when the elephants gave her a welcoming ceremony when she returned from a long departure. Thanks. A must read for all!

The first sentence of Larry Bird's candid post-player memoir begins blandly enough: "On August 18, 1992, I announced my retirement from the Boston Celtics." It's the one that follows--"It was one of the happiest days of my life"--that sets the tone for the book. Most stars have to be pulled off center stage, but as Bird Watching makes clear, the former Celtic legend who returned home to eventually coach the Indiana Pacers is certainly a rare bird. He's not afraid to ruffle feathers. And he's not afraid to tell his truth.

Perhaps the most striking revelations concern his heart. On top of the back pain that plagued him through much of his career, from time to time Bird experienced the feeling--and disorienting flush--of an irregular heartbeat, which he kept hidden from the Celtics. Even now, in the stress-filled world of coaching, Bird has almost passed out on the bench a couple of times--but he remains a fierce competitor. "I'm not going to be stupid about this heart condition, but I'm not going to live my whole life in fear of this thing either. If it goes, it goes."

Bird Watchingspends virtually no time with Bird the player; he's not one for looking back. He's more interested in explaining his evolution and thinking as a coach, examining the current state of the NBA, and picking apart the Pacer's disastrous 1999 playoff loss to the Knicks. He does, however, reminisce about his amazing connection to Magic Johnson, comparing it to the bond between Ali and Frazier. "I knew it was going to be like that forever after I played him in college for the national championship," Bird writes. "I never came up against anyone, other than Magic, who could challenge me mentally. Magic always took me to the limit." From Bird, it's hard to imagine a more heartfelt compliment. --Jeff Silverman

With extraordinary candor, passion, and insight, basketball legend Larry Bird talks about the incomparable sport that made him an international superstar and one of the most respected figures in the game.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2006-10-21

This is a follow-up to Bird's book Drive. It takes up at the end of his playing career and focuses on his post-playing career. He goes into the Olympic experience and the back pain that ended his career long before his skills had eroded.

He goes into detail about his figurehead jobs with the Boston Celtics and what ultimately led him to leave and eventually take up the head coaching job with the Indiana Pacers. Most of the book revolves around his first year coaching: he dispels myths and propaganda about his coaching and his life and h explains how he selected his coaches and his coaching philosophy, and his team.

The book was just a very enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Bird Watching - Larry Bird.......2004-03-02

      Bird Watching (by Larry Bird)
Reviewer: Known as one the of the best basketball players to have ever stepped foot onto a NBA court, Larry Bird's book will teach you many things about himself as well as the game. Larry brings the reader into some of his most personal things that he has never shared with anyone. He gives you a first class view on all of his experiences of playing professional basketball in the NBA. He shows you the downsides, positives, but most of all the victories. You'll find out first hand all of the injuries Larry has encountered that until now he has kept as a secret.

Through this book Larry will share with you information of his hometown, French Lick, Indiana. You'll learn about his family, about his fathers' death and the way up to his mothers' death. Larry talks about more than just his parents he introduces you to his wife, Dinah and his two children, Conner and Mariah.

Larry will walk you through his entire career. All the way from his high school career, where one of his favorite coaches, Jim Jones coached him. Jim Jones was the coach who really taught Larry all of the fundamentals of the game. Larry didn't seem to have that many coaches that he didn't care for. Larry is also a very hard worker, he really appreciated it when coaches made him run hard. He believed that every basketball player should be conditioned to play the game. Then later on in his career when he ends up becoming a coach he incorporates all of the coaching skills that he has gathered from his previous coaches and uses them on his players. He brings you through some of his most exciting journeys and some of his most famous friends and players.

Just about everything in this book flows together. Larry explains everything that you know about him and a lot of things that you have no idea of. The only thing that I disliked about the book is that none of it was put in order from the beginning of his life to the end of his career, it seemed to jump around a lot. Another big thing was that each chapter was long in itself, but it seemed to talk about the same thing and just ramble on and on. For example one of Larry's biggest problems was his back and he talked about it for a whole chapter then he talked about it more in a few different chapters. Although there some very good and interesting chapters in the book that taught me many things about Larry Bird.

Overall I thought the book was very good, but somewhat long for me, but if you read often then it will be just fine. I would recommend this to anyone who has a great liking of either Larry Bird or basketball. You also need to have a pretty good understanding of basketball to be able to understand some of the topics Larry teaches you.

4 out of 5 stars Bird Watching: On Playing and Coaching the Game I Love.......2002-12-10

Bird Watching, an autobiography by Larry Bird, is a story for any lover of sports. Bird Watching is a detailed account of the life of Larry Bird, from his NBA career with the Boston Celtics to his coaching position with the Indiana Pacers. After reading the first page of the book, the reader realizes there is more to this NBA legend than meets the eye.
Unlike most professional basketball players, Larry Bird never regretted the day he left the NBA and even says that the day he retired was "one of the happiest days of [his] life." Faced with chronic back problems and an irregular heart, Bird was happy to see the day when he no longer had to endure the pain of playing the sport he loved more than anything. Coming from the man himself, the story describes Bird's life in a detailed and personal manner. From beginning to end, the reader easily notices the uniqueness of this man's character and not only sees, but feels the impact this incredible man left on so many fellow players, fans, and loved ones.
I thought this was a great book, especially for a sports fan. I felt that for a sport's book, it was particularly well written. The author's style allows the reader to get a personal glimpse of the life of Larry Bird and causes the reader to feel as if they knew this NBA legend. Because of the story's subject, the author employs very few literary devices. However, the author uses many similes in describing Bird's injuries, allowing the reader to appreciate Bird's choice in leaving the NBA. The book lacks an overall dominant theme, but simply wishes to convey the story of one of the greatest and most unique basketball players of all time.

5 out of 5 stars BIRD spelled backwards is WINNER.......2002-03-06

This book explores the post playing days of arguably the best forward to ever play the game of basketball. Bird recaps his days of playing in the olympics, his time in the front office of the Celtics, and his coaching days of the Pacers. I have been a huge Bird fan since I was a kid, yet I never knew much about him, except for what I saw on the court. This book gave me a lot of insight into Bird's dynamic work ethic as both player and coach and showed how he was able to use his winning attitude to take the Pacers from 39 wins to 58 wins in one season as well as to the infamous clash with Jordan and the Bulls in the 98 Eastern Conference Finals. Bird also reveals his thoughts about the NBA today. If you want to know about the legend that is Larry Bird, you should read this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Celtics Rule.......2003-01-08

I think that this book is good for those who are fans of the Boston Celtics and that of the NBA. This book is a biography; it has a little bit of everything. With a foreword by Pat Riley (Head Coach of the Miami Heat) the book could not more complete.

This book begins in a small town in Indiana. Larry Bird was a star basketball player for his high school and the rest of the state. Larry left high school to go to Indiana University on a full basketball scholarship and play for the one and only Bobby Knight. Larry was not on the campus very long before he became overwhelmed by the great amount of students. Larry would then leave the school and transfer to Indiana State University. After college Larry entered himself in to the NBA draft and was selected 6th overall by the Boston Celtics.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise and to the point.......2005-07-15

I am an English as a second language speaker and this book helped me get closer to the simplicity and effectiveness in writing I have in my birth language.

The authors demystify into English a complex set of rules / language which were second nature to me in my mother tongue. Still, many of the principles outlined are independent of the language you write in. The exposition is clear and practical; writing becomes an iterative and progressive process.

One of the nice English specific little jewels is the difference between accuracy and precision exposed by the authors on page 67. For the technically inclined, an analogous comparison of accuracy versus precision exists in Wikipedia --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_and_precision.

4 out of 5 stars A Clear explanation of the basics........2003-08-12

How to Write offers a clear explanation of how to produce any kind of written document. This slim ( 110 page ) book offers concise instructions with good examples of how to go about producing a good report, essay or article.

There is nothing new in this book. There really should not be. Everything in this book should have been covered in any high school English class. This book will be helpful for anyone how needs a refresher, or did not learn this when they should have. In my reading of business documents and some magazine articles I see a lot of documents that could have been improved by using the methods discussed in this text.

If this book can be criticized, it would be because it is too short. It only really covers basic ideas. The authors assume you are doing a few limited kinds of expository writing. However I consider that a strength. It keeps the book simple and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who writes anything.......2002-01-10

How good is this book? After I read it, I immediately bought copies for everyone in the office. The Meyers breakdown of the writing process is a huge help for writing anything, including reports, fiction and even e-mail.
The book is easy, even fun, to read. It also adheres to the authors recommendations for conciseness, clarity, etc., which only adds to the authority of their advice.

I have a friend who is a web designer, and she uses the nickname angel. So I was delighted when I came across this CD Rom and now have the perfect gift for xmas (she knows so not spoiling!) There 100s of full colour angels in a large "paper-doll' size book. The images from Victorian Angels and they are gorgeous full colour depictions. This image are HUGE, approximately 800x1500 pixels is average size, in TIF format, perfect for web designs or for use in more personal graphics just as a web page or "siggies".

All are open CD ROM, too, so no bother with scanning them. They are Permission free use, so there is no limit but you imagination and you talent. Nothing to install, you can just open the file from your CD Rom Dive and access the images directly. Great for Paint Shop Pro use.

Great for web designers, graphics mavens, and the perfect gift for anyone who loves angels

The book is a bible full of information related to all aspects of this. The diet was very helpful for us, as we have two VERY healthy eaters! I found that the hobby of keeping these pets to be very enjoyable and educational.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent General Guide.......2004-08-15

This book, with all its faults, nevertheless contains much valuable info on palm horticulture that is lacking in the other popular books.Still worthwhile having.

              1 out of 5 stars Needs updating.......2004-05-28

At the time of publication this book was the only encyclopedic reference on palm trees. However, the passage of time and new titles such as An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms by Craft and Cultivated Palms of the World by Betrocks with updated information have made this title outdated as well as errors on some of the species and reclassifications. For an update to reference seek the newer publications. My copy sits on my shelf and hardly gets pulled as I prefer the newer publications on this topic.

4 out of 5 stars You need this book........2002-06-25

I have been reading books on palms for the last 2 years. Many are extremely superficial treatments of appearances only. Others are extremely detailed and not very useful to the non-botanist/horticulturalist. This book has a satisfying combination of background on a variety of palms, basic palm information, and excellent photographs. I would have liked more horticultural information regarding seed propagation, light and soil requirements for the specific species. Overall, however, you need this book.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2002-05-20

I use this wonderful book on a regular basis for identifing species on catalog lists. I consider this one of my primary palm books. Great for the novice or nurseryman. Easy to read. I would love to see more cultural information in the next edition. However, I would be lost without this book.
