Book Description
This volume on insects introduces the hearing research community and entomologists to the extensive but often unfamiliar literature on the ways that insects detect and process sounds. Each of the chapters is written by a leading expert in the field, and together they comprise the first comprehensive treatment of insect hearing. Starting with a discussion of insect taxonomy and an overview of the insects that are known to hear and use sound in communication,
Comparative Hearing: Insects goes on to provide reviews of the behavior, physiology, mechanics and biophysics of insect hearing. All of the chapters are conceptual, providing not only an appreciation of insect hearing but also discussion of major questions for the future. This volume gives the reader considerable insight into insect hearing as well as applications to other animal models.
Book Description
Here at last is the compelling story of the life and career of a genuine baseball hero. During a major league career that touched on four decades, Mickey Vernon ranked as one of the elite players in baseball. Considering that Vernon played in one of the game's most notable eras, this distinction was particularly remarkable.
Written with a keen sense of baseball history, this long-overdue book is based on extensive interviews with Vernon, as well as sessions with his family, friends, and former teammates and opponents. The stories, insights, and coverage of Vernon's numerous achievements provide a poignant look at a man who ranks among the classiest ever to play the game.
Customer Reviews:
Nice guy and a winner.......2006-10-30
Mickey Vernon may not be a famous baseball name among the non-historians, but he deserves this book. Had the Yankees been successful at trading for him, he would be much more famous today. As it is, he won two batting titles and several fielding championships, including lifetime records. Obviously a graceful player and a true gentleman of the sport, what he gets in this book is rather more a tribute than a biography. Mr. Westcott covers every year of his career, but many lesser campaigns are covered in a sentence. His batting championship years get more detailed attention. But most of all, this is a book about how well he is regarded in his home town and area, and a chance for all who played with him to submit a laudatory quote or story about him. It's easy, light reading. One of the fastest reads in the baseball bio segment. But it's fun and definitely a feel-good book.
Very Entertaining Book About an Underrated Ballplayer.......2006-02-13
As was the case with his book, "Philadelphia's Old Ball Parks," Rich Westcott's book about Mickey Vernon is well-researched and well-written. There are numerous very interesing and entertaining details and stories about Vernon's playing and managerial/coaching career. The author interviewed a lot of former players and others that played with or gainst, or otherwise knew Vernon; this is always a plus.
The negatives are that: (1) there is very little about Vernon's personal life, other than where he worked in the off season; (2) the book is not balanced, presenting Vernon as an almost a perfect individual, other than he was thrown out of a few games; and (3) there is no index. I would have liked to know much more about Vernon's family and personal characteristics apart from baseball. It's possible that Verbon's family and personal life were largely off limits to the author. Nevertheless, this is a very worthwhile book to buy. I enjoyed it a lot.
Book Description
Akin to a linebacker in football, the first baseman needs to be fast enough to cover bunts, athletic enough to snag errant throws, and strong enough to stand up to the collisions that often happen, while always bringing the big lumber to the plate at crucial times of the game. The First Baseman is the first book ever to cover this vital position in such depth and explore the role of one of the most active players on the field.
Author Tom Keegan—a Hall of Fame voter—interviewed dozens of first basemen past and present, including Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, Derek Lee, Jim Thome, Lou Piniella, Eddie Murray, Enos Cabell, and Eldon Auker, to find out how they got started at the position, the most memorable plays they’ve made (and muffed), and the techniques they mastered to become great first basemen. The “Day in the Life” chapter follows the Cincinnati Reds’ Sean Casey through an entire game, from his arrival at the ballpark until he hits the showers. The First Baseman also offers a treasury of lists: the best first basemen who ever played the game, from Hall-of-Famers, to MVPs, to Rookies of the Year.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Baseball Writing I've Ever Read.......2005-05-11
The inspiration that Walker's simple statistical analysis provided Sandy Alderson, one of baseball's most talented front-office personalities, is a clear testament to how advanced his thoughts on the game really were. Despite the notoriety of Michael Lewis' book, Moneyball, it was books like Walker's that actually caused people like Billy Beane, Paul DePodesta, Theo Epstein, etc. to take a second look at the way that baseball teams go about their business. Honestly, this book would be worth reading if its only virtue was its creative look at the relative (un)importance of defense and the thinking behind the construction of a modern baseball lineup.
What never seems to get mentioned, however, is how well this book is written. Walker brings an almost lyric joy to baseball writing that I've never seen before and thoroughly enjoyed. If you are the type of person who enjoys great sportswriting, you owe it to yourself to track this book down, even though it's out of print and hard to find. His statitistical pieces are great and genuinely thought-provoking, but I humbly submit that the greatest attribute of this book is Walker's writing style. He writes about baseball in a way that captures every fan's deepest emotions about the game, even those emotions they didn't realize they had until they read Walker's work. His piece on the unbridled optimism surrounding every team during spring training might be the best 2000 or so words ever writtten about baseball. In my humble, poorly-read opinion.
For the fan jaded by steroid controversies, Congressional hearings, and overpaid superstars, Walker's book not only offers remarkable insight into the workings of baseball, but promises to rekindle the simple joys that made you a fan in the first place.
This is the holy grail.......2004-12-07
The story, as told by Alan Schwartz in "The Numbers Game" (which you should own) goes like this: Sandy Alderson in the front office of the Oakland A's, would listen to Eric Walker's commentaries on public radio in the Bay Area while driving to/from work. One day, he happens upon Walker's paperback, "The Sinister Firstbaseman" in a San Francisco book store and after reading it, begins to ruminate upon Walker's counter-intuitive observations about baseball. Alderson begins developing these ideas with the A's and these are enthusiastically embraced by his accolite (sp?), Billy Beane. Years later, Beane's "law of averages" driven management style is embraced by a new generation of baseball men from inside the A's, such as Paul DePodesta, and outside, such as Theo Epstein. The world outside the industry is only somewhat aware of this sea-change until "Moneyball" is released.
As "The Numbers Game" makes clear, there is no one particular moment when general managers suddenly saw the wisdom in viewing baseball the way a casino views a pair of dice (die?), it has been an evolutionary process almost as old as professional baseball itself. However, one clear, modern "ah-ha" moment occurred when Alderson picked up this book.
(Schwartz's book makes numerous references to the creation of Strat-O-Matic baseball, a box game employing ballplayers' statistics and the roll of dice (die?). Schwartz discovered that as many as 50% of the "new generation" general managers and assistant G.M.s had played that game as teenagers).
Why is the firstbaseman "sinister?" Well, the Latin root for "left" is also the root for "sinister . . ."

Book Description
Yoga is an ideal way for expectant mothers to enhance overall health, cope with the physical demands of pregnancy, and prepare for labor and birth. The physician-approved Prenatal Yoga Deck makes exercise easy with 50 beautifully and precisely illustrated warm-ups, poses, and meditations. Suggested combinations and coding by trimester help create adaptable routines.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Childbirth Education Classes!.......2007-04-16
I love this deck! I am a certified childbirth educator and this prenatal yoga deck is one of my favorite resources for my classes. Almost every pose has specific pregnancy or labor/birth related benefits. I put together a series of 6-8 poses from the deck that I use as an opening exercise in my classes--people often learn better by actually *doing* something and practicing the yoga poses together allows experiential practice of pelvic floor exercises, pelvic rocks, tailor sitting, optimal fetal positioning exercises, etc. instead of just me talking! Also, I emphasize to my students that birth happens in your BODY--we will spend a lot of time talking and sharing information, but birth doesn't happen in your mind, it happens in your body. People today spend much of their time "living in their heads" and many of us do not feel comfortable with, or at home in, our bodies. So, practicing the poses from this deck in class helps couples out of their heads and into their bodies and begins a process of feeling comfortable with moving and using their bodies in positive ways--I hope this helps develop a trust and confidence that will then contribute to a smooth and peaceful birth process.
The deck also includes several nice, short meditations that serve as a nice closing exercise either for the whole class, or for the exercise portion of class.
I forgot one more nice feature! Each pose has a positive birth affirmation that goes with it--I love these, because I feel like they help plant positive seeds of confidence and trust in the wisdom of women's bodies and of the beauty of birth.
To conclude, I love this deck and I strongly recommend it for other childbirth educators!
Great Tool.......2006-01-22
The prenatal yoga deck is a real find. I had already owned several DVDs when I came across Miller's deck, but decided to purchase it anyway. I am glad I did. At about eight months, I could barely move and the deck enabled me to stretch at my own pace. Now that my baby has moved and I have more space, I still use the deck just about every night so I can continue my practice at my level. I highly recommend this product, and plan to purchase it for my friends who became pregnant in the future.
I did not like the deck option........2005-09-10
Instead of pictures it has poor drawings, it is hard to see exactly in some cases.
I found the books a lot more explicit and more descriptive.
I returned it the same day I got it. Very disappointed with it.
Excellent Yoga Deck for Pregnancy!.......2004-12-18
I loved this Yoga deck. The pictures and directions were easy to follow, and the cards are very well organized. It was easy to customize a routine based on my trimester, and how much free time I had. I can't say enough about the excellent poses. I was able to stay very flexible throughout my pregnancy, and I felt fantastic. Additionally, the meditation phrases helped me to stay positive and truly enjoy the miracle of pregnancy! I highly recommend this Yoga Deck; it had such a positive impact on my pregnancy. A must have.
Deck of cards format is a great idea.......2004-07-15
What drew me to this "book" was the unique deck-of-cards format. It is much easier to use than a full sized book. However, you also get much less information than a book, so I recommend using the Prenatal Yoga deck in conjunction with a good prenatal yoga book, or in addition to one's previous yoga experience. The Prenatal Yoga deck presents the information (poses, breathing, meditations) in a clear, simple way. The poses are quite gentle but effective, and the suggested routines are short, which I found perfect for before-work sessions in the morning. You can of course create longer routines from the 25 or so poses included in the deck. I especially liked the suggested meditative phrase for each pose. The poses all indicate in which trimesters they are safe, and include modifications for later on in the pregnancy.
Book Description
More than 400 bold, black-and-white silhouettes offer graphic artists a rich source of eye-catching, royalty-free motifs with a vintage touch: male and female profiles, elegantly clad couples, youngsters boating, fishing, and flying a kite, ladies reading, painting, and playing golf, and much more. Perfect for enhancing greeting cards, posters, ads, and other print projects.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful images.......2007-08-23
If you like Victorian ephemera, this book of silhouette images is for you. Although they do come in the .eps format on the CD they are nevertheless raster images. However, since they are in black and white they are very versatile. Using any layer-based or object-based program like PhotoImpact, Photoshop, PS Elements, or Paint Shop Pro, it's easy to remove them from the background and then use them for anything you want. They've been scanned onto the CDROM at a generous 600 ppi.

It has been over 4 years since I lost my dog. I bought this book for myself about 2 years ago. I love it, I still read it and refer to it. I am now buying it for a friend who just lost her beloved dog. It is great. Every vet should be made to read this book before they graduate.

Book Description
Salvia is derived from the Latin word salvare, "to heal," and for centuries salvias have been valued for their medicinal and culinary qualities. Salvias, commonly known as sages, grow throughout temperate and subtropical parts of the world, from sea level to altitudes of more than 11,000 feet (3400 meters). They occur in many forms: perennial, biennial, annual herbs, and evergreen or deciduous shrubs. These amazingly varied plants are also noteworthy for their remarkable resistance to pests and diseases, their drought tolerance — and their beautiful flowers.
Following the great success of Betsy Clebsch's first book on salvias comes this expanded edition, The New Book of Salvias: Sages for Every Garden. Betsy has added more than 50 new species and cultivars such as Salvia castanea and S. recurva, bringing the total to approximately 150 beautiful, gardenworthy species and significant hybrids. She documents them alphabetically and includes botanical descriptions, information on habit, blooming cycle, recommended companion plants, and delightful historical tidbits of discovery and usage. Nearly 100 new photos and illustrations make this new edition even more attractive than its predecessor.
In her ardent pursuit of salvias, Clebsch has explored the wild to collect plants and seeds to test in her California garden. The resulting wealth of cultural information in The New Book of Salvias ensures that our gardens will not only be exquisitely aromatic but also wonderfully picturesque.
Customer Reviews:
New book on Salvias.......2005-09-08
Found the book interesting but limited since it was written promarily for the US gardener. Would have appreciated more illustrations. Nevertheless a worthwhile addition to the library.
Adding over fifty new species and cultivars.......2003-11-15
Betsy Clebsch's New Book Of Salvias is a winner: it discusses the varied plants notable for their drought tolerance and beautiful flowers, and expands upon a prior edition in adding over fifty new species and cultivars. An alphabetical arrangement makes it easy for the gardener to locate the hybrid and species and includes botanical descriptions, habitat and blooming information, and background history.
