Good book with a lot of pictures that cover most of your unanswered questions about duck hunting. This is an introduction that helps you start, but not a bible. Well worth the money

I suppose that if you're buying a book to learn "how" to hunt ducks, then you are (like me) already at a disadvantage. So much in waterfowling is dependent on tradition, community, and access, so there are natural barriers to entry for the novice.
This book does an excellent job providing basic coverage of key duck hunting issues, but it is (of course) not a substitute for a good mentor or listening to some old timers yack about their previous seasons.
Of particular worth are the decoy spreads and the overview of different hunting venues. But perhaps the greatest contribution is the insight on duck-hunting lingo. I was unaware that I was a puddle jumper without a milk run, who had dabbled at pass shooting, but now I know.
Seriously, for those of us stuck in a rut hunting farm ponds, the introductions to river, lake, and flooded timber are intriguing and motivating. The basic waterfowl information is useful, and the various tips, tricks & techniques are all serviceable. This is a very nice introduction for the new hunter, and should serve nicely as a reference volume for those with more experience.

I thought that this was an Encyclopedia but it was more just general information that anyone that has seen the dog would know, a big waste of money

I found the section on breeds to be informative with nice pictures. The section on care and illness was severely lacking: on one page, the text just ended with no punctuation and did not continue to the next page. To find out how to take a dog's temperature was very clear, but I had to search the index to find out what that temp should be. There were instances that in case of an illness or infection, no real guides as to what the owner could do until the dog could see a vet. Just not very helpful to me at all.

We enjoyed your book and found it had excellent graphics, however there were a few concerns. On pg 83, it states when suffering from heat exhaustion to "bath the dog with cold water and especially drench its head" if one were to do this it would send the animal into an immediate state of cardiac arrest in shock, a condition that no owner is equiped to deal with. I think that any veterinarian would agree, the best course of action would be to slowly cool the animal with tepid water and seek immediate emergency help. As well there is a section stating how much dogs like to eat chocolate but there is no mention to the fact of it being extremely toxic. On the plus side it is nice to see that you recommended that any injured dog should be muzzled as it may bite (something that the owner may not know).

I got this book last weekend. I can't say I have read it cover to cover, but I have taken a good look at it.
I like it!! ...I wont say the information inside it is very precise, especially concerning breed temperament, but the pictures are wonderful and give an excellent idea of what the dog will look like in real life.
It is not a heavy book, and the language is very easy to read, so I also think its a good option for kids who are beyond the picture books and want a bit more information... without over saturating them!!
CAREFUL - DANGEROUS INFO.......2003-09-03
Another book by the same writer "The essential Dog Book" has under "Feeding Requirements" the following statement. "Very nearly every dog loves chocolate". While true it doesn't go on to say that chocolate is DANGEROUS for dogs. I just called my vet and confirmed it. NEVER feed chocolate to your dog or cat no matter how much they like it. I cannot recomend any book by a writer that has such a dangerous error in it. It makes me wonder how well they researched and checked the rest of it. I don't know if this book also has this error in it.

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs (Dog Breeds & Dog Care) is good, with lots of colorful photos and wonderful descriptions-4-dogs, but there are words that children like me don't know. It's best with an adult to help kids make out words. That's what we always do. Read it with an adult. I like how it says on the Chihuahua breed page it says they are brave & intelligent. Not only was I intrigued by the age of the authors (3rd Graders), I was impressed with their story. Their witty rhymes told the typical story of kids being frightened by their principal, "Mrs. Strictly". After benjamin fails a quiz on multiplication, Mrs. Strictly went out of her way to help him master his 3 and 4 times tables. I'd love to see more books on the shelves for children written by their peers.

Not only was I interested when I saw a book on the shelf written and illustrated by a group of third graders, I was impressed to read the witty rhymes, the complementary pictures, and a lesson in respecting authoritative figures since they just want to help.
