Book Description

Crimes against Nature reveals the hidden history behind three of the nation's first parklands: the Adirondacks, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon. Focusing on conservation's impact on local inhabitants, Karl Jacoby traces the effect of criminalizing such traditional practices as hunting, fishing, foraging, and timber cutting in the newly created parks. Jacoby reassesses the nature of these "crimes" and provides a rich portrait of rural people and their relationship with the natural world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

5 out of 5 stars A lucid book on how we've "created" nature - and outlaws.......2002-02-14

Crimes Against Nature is written by one of America's foremost new thinkers on the environment. Karl Jacoby's book has all the beauty and intellectual force his lectures are famous for.

This book gives a startlingly new perspective on just how we've created our national parks. In doing so, he makes us rethink what we consider our proudest achievements - and at what cost we've achieved them. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing look at our national parks.......2001-02-14

"Conservation" seems like a completely positive word--e.g., we want to preserve nature for future generations. I remember how in awe I was when I saw the Grand Canyon for the first time.

But after reading Jacoby's book, I feel like I have a whole new perspective. Not that I don't agree that protecting the environment shouldn't be a high priority--for example, I think the idea of drilling into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil when we have all these people driving thes gas-guzzling SUVs is the height of idiocy. But this book shows that there were some human costs to creating the park--the Indians and poor white people who already lived on the land that became parks. I didn't realize that they had the U.S. army patrolling and occupying the Grand Canyon to keep people out--although I do remember thinking that the Forest rangers' uniforms (and Smoky the Bear!) were very militaristic.

Basically, what became parks were already living entities that had people living in and exploiting their natural resources and changing the environment. So now I realize when I see the Grand Canyon, it's not as if it's in a time warp, completely untouched for centuries. I plan to keep traveling and visiting more parts--esp out west, and this book has definitely deepened my understanding of our National Park system!

In our minds the Caribbean is the embodiment of Paradise. We need only close our eyes to see clearly the sparkling turquoise waters, white beaches, and lush tropical forests. Yet hidden just beyond this familiar scene is another world—the wild Caribbean, where attentive travelers may encounter butterflies with see-through wings or colorful bird colonies, prehistoric iguanas or silver waterfalls, smoking volcanoes or secret orchids in the forest.

This book is a gorgeously illustrated exploration and celebration of the wildlife and wild places of the Caribbean. It encompasses all the principal islands as well as the mainland areas bordering the Sea, and its Gazetteer is crammed with useful tips to help travelers choose locations to visit and the best time of year to do so. The book introduces diverse natural habitats—reefs; white, pink, and black sand beaches; underground caverns; mangroves; salt ponds; desert islands, bubbling sulfur springs; and more—and offers rare insights into the amazingly varied animals and plants of the wild Caribbean. Combining practical travel information with fascinating scientific facts, Wild Caribbean reveals a natural world more magical than we could have imagined. Active travelers and armchair tourists alike will find the volume irresistible.

Your Performing Edge is quite simply the best book i have ever read on the subject of improving mental performance. I am a keen amateur golfer with a 4 handicap and a great natural athelete. Like everyone, i was searching for that "miracle" to help me break through the next barrier - my mind. I have read and studied a number of other books and programs about improving mental performance. While many gave you the answers to "what" you need to do, none gave you the answers to "how" to improve. Dr. JoAnn Dalkoetters insights, lessons and tips are the most valuable resource ever produced on the subject. Combine this book with her Personal Coaching Program and you have, what i consider to be, the most powerful program available. I am now playing the golf i have always dreamed of. Your Performing Edge is a must read for anyone seriously considering improving their mental approach to atheletics, life, business or otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Practice What You're Learning in "Your Performing Edge" Book.......2004-03-26

This Audio CD is a Companion to the the "YOUR PERFORMING EDGE book. It contains four guided visualization exercises that helped me to practice what I was learning in the book.
                    The exercises guided me with:

                    Energizing my mind and body
                    Building new confidence and motivation
                    Focusing and performing my best
                    Healing and recovering completely

I found this program really works for improving performance in all parts of my life - professionally and personally.
Dr. Dahlkoetter's training exercises on this CD helped me learn to focus on my goals and visualize the results I was looking for. Now that I can see a clear picture of what I want in my life, I am moving forward and making real progress in fitness, personal productivity, and peak performance.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants excellence in all aspects of life.

As a competitive distance runner for the last 25 years, I've focused mainly on the physical aspects of training. Then I came across Dr. Dahlkoetter's book on the mental aspects of training and living. After reading it, I have nothing but praise for this book. It provided a whole new stimulus for my training and life. Helpful mental training exercises are provided along with straight forward information and interviews with champion athletes. I highly recommend this book for everyone, athlete or not.

This informative book contains invaluable advice on retirement options for those with cash-flow worries. Speaking to folks like me, Howells knows just what the hot buttons are, and how to address them. I found helpful information in every chapter. Howells does not waste any time getting to the heart of retirement issues for limited income folks who rarely receive any due in most publications. Not all retirees have investment income and golden parachutes! Highly recommended reading!

5 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable and helpful read from Mr. Howells.......2005-08-22

I'm not looking to retire anytime soon (I'm 50) but really enjoyed this particular book, as it's given me much to think about. I like his down-to-earth approach (he and his wife have boldly RV'd all over the place, including down into Mexico, so he knows firsthand what day-to-day life is for the average (?) retiree). Again, a very enjoyable read.

Retirement on a Shoestring has sections that really add to what I have read on retirement. I especially like the chapters on College Towns in retirement, RVs and Retirement, and Mobile Homes and Retirement. The book is easy to read, and it is full of great statistics, tips and insights. This is a fine book for someone contemplating retirement. It makes one feel that success in retirement is just around the corner.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent retiree's bible filled with practical info........1998-10-10

Unlike most retirement guides which offer zero useful information, "Shoestring" offers practical information for the majority of Americans who are not filthy rich, and are coming up on depleted Social Security, rising housing and rental costs and non-existent medical care.Howells offers real strategies to live on reduced incomes. I recommend it. A+, John.

5 out of 5 stars Great little collection of interesting facts...........2006-09-16

I'm a fan of Desmond Morris and this book represents some of his lighter work. However, it is full of interesting facts that any cat owner would find interesting.

It is consists of 2-3 page sections organized by subject. It addresses questions like, why cats purr, what effect catnip has on them, how cats find their way home, etc.

Desmond Morris is a zoologist and he has a deep knowledge of many subject areas. This is a simple read, but it is quite interesting and a nice gift book for cat owners.

                      4 out of 5 stars I'm being hunted.......2006-01-11

Well, my toes are being hunted. Somehow, his mayfly attention span has settled on those wiggling things at the end of my leg. His killer instincts awaken, he crouches for his approach, and ...

ouch. I've just got to trim the little beggar's claws.

This enjoyable book describes and explains a lot of what goes on in those furry little minds. If you're among the many fascinated by these familiar, even friendly little aliens, you're sure to enjoy this illustrated series of one-page observations.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting read.......2005-05-18

This book is full of interesting facts about cats. It was a fun read, and I read it in one evening.

I only have two complaints about it. First, there are no footnotes. Morris doesn't cite any of his sources.

Second, he doesn't tell us why we say, "Cat got your tongue?" He answers several similar questions. He explains why we say, "Let the cat out of the bag," and "It's raining cats and dogs," but he doesn't tell us why the cat has our tongue. That's really important, you know.

Anyway, I would recommend this book just because it's entertaining to read. I also read his book on Horse watching, which is just as good.

ive read this book in 4th grade and i was amazed, the way he describes things makes learning addicting. today, at 24 years old, id reccomend this book to everyone and have purchased multiple copies over the years to give as gifts. you are at a loss if you dont read this book, as well as the second book in its series "Catlore"

4 out of 5 stars Fun, furry read.......2005-02-26

I don't think I'm "letting the cat out of bag" to say that this is a fun book for the cat owner. If you'd like to know the origin of that expression, it's in this book. Using the vehicle of questions that have occurred to many of us, Desmond Morris, reveals a lot about house cat behavior. The questions range from "Why does a cat chatter when it sees a bird"; "How does a cat use its whiskers", and "Why does a cat sneer". Along the way are some fascinating facts; such as a difference in feather plucking behavior in New and Old World cats, and the ear markings (for example of tigers) as a means of enhancing signaling form the ears. Morris may be forgiven for a few presumptions about cat motives (particularly with respect to humans).

5 out of 5 stars A year on the prairie with Marjolein Bastin.......2004-06-16

"View from a Sketchbook" is a lovely album of watercolors by Marjolein Bastin, the illustrator of the children's books starring Vera the Mouse, and Tovah Martin, who kept a journal of Marjolein's nature walks during a full year from spring through winter. They spent the year at the Bastin's home in a carefully tended patch of Missouri prairie, visiting the Bastin's old home in Ede in central Holland, and on vacation on Grand Cayman.

There are three dozen full-page illustrations and numerous little sketches, sometimes just a single bumblebee or eggshell. You can see the love and care that goes into every little detail. Even the list of contents is terminated with a tiny ladybug. And the cover of the book underneath the dust jacket is decorated with a frieze of Canada geese with a family of chicks. This is an exquisitely beautiful book from the rabbit on the first page to the Giant Swallowtail on the last.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Suneson's Monograph on Wagner and Indian Thought.......1999-12-04

The following remarks are made on the basis of reading the Swedish original, which equally should apply to this German translation. The reader should be aware that, although where Sanskrit text is given it has been translated for our benefit, quotations from other languages, such as French and English, have not been translated.

Professor Suneson sheds light on a previously little illuminated corner of the life and work of the German composer Richard Wagner; namely, Wagner's lifelong interest in the literature and religions of India and Ceylon. As an Indologist, Professor Suneson was able to produce what can only be regarded as the definitive study of the influence of India and Ceylon on Wagner's works.

The first part of the book is a general introduction to Wagner's interest in this area. It is natural that this discussion centres on the philosopher Schopenhauer, who related his pessimistic philosophy to the ideas of Buddhism. As most people know, Schopenhauer's philosophy came to assume enormous significance for Wagner during the early 1850's, and when blended with Wagner's own ideas (such as the theme of salvation through love), this philosophy became the foundation of later works such as 'Tristan und Isolde', 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' and 'Parsifal'. As a result of Schopenhauer's interest in Buddhism, Wagner too explored the Buddhist literature of India and (where available) Ceylon.

As Carl Suneson explains, a number of authors have addressed this aspect of Wagner's life and work before, but mostly in brief articles and not without error. Suneson's review of the literature provides references for further reading.

Carl Suneson provides a highly interesting account of which Indian works Richard Wagner read, and what he might have read. This information is drawn from Wagner's letters and from other writings, such as 'Mein Leben' (My Life, Wagner's autobiography), 'Das Braune Buch' (The Brown Book, Wagner's diary 1865-1882) and Cosima's 'Tagebücher' (Cosima Wagner's diaries 1869-1882).

In the second and shortest part of the book, Suneson considers the influence of Indian writings on Wagner's thinking about music.

In the third section, Suneson considers the Indian influences in later music-dramatic works by Richard Wagner. He warns that it is only with great caution that anyone should attempt to do this for any work other than 'Die Sieger' (The Victors), which would, if completed, have been the only stage-work by Wagner based entirely on Indian sources (specifically on 'Sardulakarnavadana' from the collection 'Divya vadana').

Three of the works that Wagner did realise contain elements that seem to have been inspired by Wagner's studies of Indian and Ceylonese literature. Firstly, the ending of 'Götterdämmerung' (Twilight of the Gods). After writing what was originally entitled 'Siegfried's Tod' (Siegfried's Death), Wagner changed the ending several times, as his world-view and therefore his interpretation of his own 'Ring' changed. In two of these revisions, the words given to Brünnhilde had a Buddhist resonance, of which little or nothing remains in the final version.

Similarly, in the ending of Wagner's most Schopenhauerian work, 'Tristan und Isolde', the words of Isolde's Transfiguration have an Indian flavour, but Suneson is unable to relate this to any specific source in Indian literature.

When he comes to consider Wagner's last music-drama, 'Parsifal', however, the evidence for Buddhist influence is much stronger. Suneson explains, in my view convincingly, that at least one, and perhaps as many as three passages in the text of 'Parsifal' are primarily based on Indian texts. The most obvious connection is an indirect one, namely via Mathilde Wesendonck's poem about Buddha and the wounded swan. Other connections explain more of the text in the swan incident in the first act of the opera, and several passages in the second act: for example, the temptation of Parsifal by Klingsor's magic maidens can be related to the similar temptation of the future Buddha by women conjured up by Mara, Lord Death. Exploring the Parsifal-Buddha and Klingsor-Mara parallels further, we begin to see a Buddhist (or pseudo-Buddhist) dimension underlying a work in which the Christian symbols have been more obvious.

                            Book Description

In 1968 Leroy TeCube left his home on the Jicarilla Apache reservation to serve as an infantryman in Vietnam. Year in Nam is his story of that long, terrifying, and numbing year of combat, one that profoundly affected the men in TeCube’s platoon and tested the strength of his own Native American heritage.

Tecube was a respected point man and leader of his platoon. His memoir provides an intimate glimpse of the daily lives of infantrymen--the monotony of camp, the oppressive heat, the deceptively dull routine of patrols, the brief but furious eruptions of combat, the forging of platoon squads on the crucible of trust, a pervasive sadness and indifference, and a growing acceptance of the imminence of death. Particularly powerful are Tecube’s observations and experiences from the perspective of a Native American soldier. Many aspects of TeCube's cultural heritage--his traditional religious beliefs, the farewell blessing from an Apache medicine man, the memory of special powwow dances held back home for soldiers--were a source of strength to him.

5 out of 5 stars Vietnam from the infantryman's perspective.......2005-06-03

"Year in Nam: A Native American Soldier's Story" is a memoir by Leroy TeCube, a Jicarilla Apache from New Mexico. He served as an infantryman in the Vietnam War from January 1968 to January 1969. TeCube fills this book with many details about the daily life of an infantryman in a war zone: being in a firefight, undertaking a combat air assault, walking point, etc. He discusses the weapons they used. The story is told in a straightforward style that is considerate of the general reader. For example, the author stops to define or explain such military terms and acronyms as "MOS," "tracer round," and "concertina wire."

TeCube does not flinch from describing the horrors and loss of war. But he balances out the narrative by discussing some of the humorous and friendly activities of the troops. He discusses the encounters, both positive and negative, he and other troops had with Vietnamese civilians. Along the way he offers many observations on the plants and animals he observed in Vietnam.

An important theme of the book is how TeCube's Native American heritage and identity provided him with an anchor in this dangerous, challenging environment. Particularly interesting are his accounts of how both other U.S. troops and Vietnamese people reacted to his Indian appearance. TeCube discusses his ethnic identity and its impact on his combat tour in a matter-of-fact way. Another important thread that winds through the book involves leadership and soldiering skill; we see TeCube move up the ranks as he gains experience in combat. Overall, this is an interesting memoir that brings a valuable perspective to the rich canon of Vietnam War literature.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Tour In Nam.......2001-03-15

Having done a tour myself, I have seen the movies and read several books that have come out about the war in Viet Nam. Nothing, and no one, has been able to authenticate the reality of the day to day operations of search and destroy missions, the monotony, the high levels of alertness, the camaraderie, the tragedies, and the senseless pain and suffering that took place on both sides, until now. Leroy does a superlative job of describing the feelings of the GI and those of the Vietnamese. His description of events are factual yet without sensationalism, a manner that can only be told by a seasoned combat veteran who became immune to the catastrophic events that surrounded him, as a means of survival, both physically and mentally.

This is a must read for anyone who served in I Corp or the Americal. You will again feel yourself walking through the paddies, on the trails, smelling the odors of the villages, or hugging a rice paddy dike as the sniper rounds were in-coming. This book truly describes the reality of the life of a combat infantryman (grunt) during the war in Viet Nam.

4 out of 5 stars a wondeful piece of tragic realism.......1999-05-05

In very straightforward, understandable prose, Mr. Tecube has captured the essence of the daily horrors and futility of America's presence in Vietnam. The real heroes of the book are the members of Leroy's platoon. They're a bunch of American kids that really didn't want to be where they were but tried to do make the best of a tragic situation. What's refreshing about Tecube's approach is that he's not out to condemn the soldiers, the politicians, or the enemy. Yet he's able to convey a sense of the absurdity of the situation and still maintain his dignity and objectivity.

I've read a number of books about Vietnam but none conveys the sense of what it was really like the way Tecube does.
