What becomes abundantly clear as one reads through this bok is that H.E. Davey writes from experience. He has practised several of the "ways" to a very high level, and he is able to write about his experiences in a readable, almost conversational manner. He sees quite deeply into the heart of Japanese culture, taking the reader along a path of understanding and discovery as he presents the key concepts of that tradition. In addition to the text, the marginal reminders and definitions of the key concepts reinforce what one has already encountered in the text, and serve as a glossary of important terms. Davey provides exercizes to try at home, as well. All in all, this is a first-rate book -- helpful, accessible, accurate, and often profound.

H.E. Davey excels at communicating an approach for the Westerner to Japanese concepts of universality, aesthetics, and human spirituality. Written in a very accessible form, this book is an excellent introduction to those topics for the beginner; as well as being a great reference book for those already practicing any form of meditation, martial art, or fine art. Full of concrete descriptions of ideas and relationships that often go mute in Western culture. Read it over and over!

A great take on the intangibles of budo.......2006-10-26

Kenji Tokitsu is a very experienced martial artist, with knowledge of both Chinese and Japanese systems. He shares with the reader many insights gained by four decades of practice. Key to this discussion are the terms budo, ki, seme, kizeme, ma, ritsu zen, zazen and kiko.

This read like an extra appendix to the author's book "Miyamoto Musashi: His Life and Writings", also available from Shambala. I was already interested in the concepts of seme and kizeme from reading that book, and this book more than sated that particular thirst for more information on the subject.

I find it tremendously important that the author is appropriately vague when it comes to defining the term "ki", for that is what ki is. He also reminds us of the fact that words in the Japanese language often have several meanings that are almost unfathomable to someone who does not know Japanese. There is also the fact that two seemingly opposed terms, such as love and hate, can still mean essentially the same thing or at least contain elements of each other within them.

He makes some interesting points as to why kendo is more suited than other budo forms to cultivate kizeme, but does not dismiss the other forms and in fact describes how he feels some might even have more potential in this area.

The author also describes various training methods as employed by a number of sword masters to develop one's self beyond mere technique, especially relating to Zen.

The importance of this book and others like it is a great one. For those who are to spend decades in dedication to the martial arts, it is worthy of consideration to go beyond merely being a little better than the next practitioner.

Highly recommended on its own or in conjunction with the author's other book. I hope he'll write some more for us.

I hate to give this dictionary only 2 stars because it has been the most helpful word study tool for those who do not know the original Biblical languages. But it has now been surpassed by

Mounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (William Mounce).

It is more accurate and thorough than Vine's.

Stephen D. Renn's Expository Dictionary of Bible Words and Lawrence Richards' New International Encyclopedia of Bible Words can also be helpful. But they are less thorough than Vine's, let alone Mounce's.

Other helpful tools for word study include:

Interlinear for the Rest of Us (William Mounce), which includes a Greek-English dictionary.

Word Study Greek-English New Testament (Paul McReynolds), which has a very useful concordance based on Greek words.

I have been using this book as a sermon resource for several years now and have used quite a few of the anecdotes throughout the book. I especially appreciate the in-depth index which guides me to the topics I need. It made me purchase Hodgin's other two compilations.

Not true to its title.......2004-03-07

I found this book very disappointing. Its title is 1001 more humorous Illustrations for Public Speaking.

I found a lot of the content is not suitable for public speaking unless you are a preacher. A lot is in preaching. But I doubt whether many preachers would want to use it.

I wanted to use it in my public speaking club. Much is not appropriate for that setting.

I found it bemusing that quite a bit of the book is not appropriate for a preacher to use either.

Although the book was only published in 1998, it had an old feel.

Very poorly updated.......2000-06-09

This book was very poorly updated from Francois Le Berre's original book "The New Chameleon Handbook." He has information in it that is totally wrong like where he says that there is currently a quota of 60 C. parsonii to be exported annually and that 475 C. parsonii were exported in 1997, when all exportation of C. parsonii from Madagascar was stoped in 1994 and no new quota has yet been set. He also is still claiming to breed chameleons in Madagascar at a ranch or breeding facility that is owned by a Frech scientist who says he just comes here to buy chameleons from him. He also has switched to the Klaver and Bohme classification system which puts fischeri and some other species in the genus Bradypodion but he still says all Bradypodion species are ovoviviparous as well as other things and if he is using the Klaver and Bohme system, this is not true as fischeri are oviparous. This book also still lists breeders that have been out of breeding and selling for the longest time. The book still has many errors in the index and he also has pictures in this book that are misidentified. This book is almost identical to his old book with the exception that it has fewer pictures, a new cover, and some updated information that much of is still very false. The book does not appear that it was edited for any mistakes. In short, this book was very poorly updated and you can get the same information (with still less false information and more pictures) in his original book.

What you need to know about chameleons is in this book! I enjoyed reading it and learning everything about this little creature. From it's history and evolution, to it's anatomy and manerisms. What I really wanted was a book which explained how to care for the chameleon and I picked the right one.Francois LeBerre makes me feel comfortable caring for the chameleon. The size of the book is good for handling and storing. The print is large and clear, easy to read and the pictures are messmerizing. When I browsed through other books on the topic, they seemed like a joke compared to this informative publication! I recommend this to beginners (which I am) because you'll feel like an expert (LeBerre) when you're done. Enjoy!!!

Best book on chameleons.......1998-11-13

My name is Nobu, I am from Japan. Here in Japan, Francois Le Berre is famous for his work on chameleons, this book is the best I have ever read on my favourite animals. Some Japanese publishers have found the pictures so good that they have been using them in some of the japanese magazines too. The information is very complete and the pictures astonishing, I am looking forward for Francois Le Berre's next book. He is unsurpassed and really is the Master of Chameleons!

This IS a good book, but can be improved........1998-06-23

In light of the two previous reviews, I felt compelled to add my own thoughts. It is a very good book, but lacks some information I think is essential for the beginner. The author makes little or no reference to common names of the organisms (where a common name is ascribed). This would make it difficult for the typical beginner to relate the scientific name of the organism with the common name that is usually available at the site of purchase. The author also fails to give adequate information regarding the size attained for a full grown adult specimen. This is especially important when a budding herptologist decides to embark on caring for a "beginners" specimen, but is not told that the animal will be two feet long as an adult. This can be critical when one is designing a habitat.It is not at all uncommon to see beginners think of these wonderful animals as being "small and cute", when in fact many of the easiest to care for become quite large. That being said, LeBerre has certainly prepared an excellent guide, and the photos are wonderful. It is the best book out there for the layman, and does in fact rate five stars.

Do not be fooled by the size and soft cover of this book, it is in a class by itself. The author covers every aspect of the art and science of Chameleon husbandry. It becomes immediately apparent that the author has an intimate knowledge of chameleon natural history and captive husbandry. He presents unique ways of helping the reader understand chameleon natural history, behavior, reproduction and captive care. Especially noteworthy is the breadth of chameleon species described. There is no skimping on data: natural range, other common names, subspecies, age to maturation, clutch size, incubation/pseudo-gestation duration, incubation temperature, lighting, feeding, etc...everything you need to know to keep and breed common and rare chameleon species of all genera. Asthetically the book is a masterpiece. Photos of rarely seen uncommon and common species, in their best colors, accompany each species description. The author's lifelong experiences, research and passion for chameleons have resulted in an unbelievably informative yet practical book which has the ability to inspire the most seasoned chameleon keeper/breeder.

The pictures in the book are mostly close up pictures of the flowering plant. Can't see leaf or leaf structure or plant size within a natural environment. Would not recommend this book for plant identification.

An Essential, Exhaustive, Clear Reference.......2001-12-07

I haven't left this book alone for a day since I bought it. The book provides, in a catalog format, all of the essential information one might need to evaluate the suitability of a very wide variety of native wildflowers, shrubs and trees.

The organization of the book is helpful in that it categorizes the plants as long-lived wildflowers, short-lived wildflowers, shrubs, trees, palms, et cetera. Each individual plant is represented by a good photo and a consistent presentation of essential data: culture, propagation, zone, soil requirements, et cetera, so you can easily and quickly access needed information.

A drawback for Central or North Florida readers: the book seems to be heavily weighted toward southern Florida natives.

A suggestion: a clear identification of the habitat within which each plant is likely to be found would be helpful, especially to those interested in habitat restoration, as I am.

A Must-Have for All Gardeners.......2001-05-06

If you want to start, enhance, or improve a native Florida garden, this book has it all! From basics like how to prepare your site before planting (wish this book had been published two years ago!), to selecting the right plants for your site, to pictures of the plants, Rufino Osorio has covered it in this book. I thought I knew a lot before reading it, but now I rely on this text to help me refine my own native garden with buying new plants, pruning and propagating existing plants, (possibly even removing some existing ones), etc. Whether you're a relative novice like me, a true ground-zero beginner, or an experienced gardener, this book belongs on your shelf. My only note of caution is that this purchase will be only the beginning of a long list of acquisitions; in the two weeks since buying this book (got one early through Mounts Botanical Garden in WPB), I have already purchased about 20 new plants.

This book was a dissapointment for me. I don't have an unlimited budget for store design and most of the businesses featured in this book clearly did. There are a few exceptions to this in the book, but if you're a small business looking for ideas to freshen up your store, I would not recommend this book.

Not relavent for most businesses.......2007-02-25

This book is basically just a picture book of expensive stores most of us can't afford to shop in (the ones with 2 pairs of shoes on one entire wall, and 3 items on fancy hangers on the other wall). Most of the displays are designed so specifically around the products so it's difficult to even use the pictures as inspitration for different types of merchandise.

We got much more inspiration from the book "Store Presentation & Design" by Vsiual Reference Publications.

Percy Greene, publisher and editor of the Jackson Advocate from 1939 to 1977, lost the backing of the African American community in the 1950s for his harsh criticisms of the civil rights movement. He also accepted money from the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, a state agency created to destroy the movement in the South. Nonetheless, he continued to publish the most important black newspaper in Mississippi, telling the news from the perspective of a radical black conservative.
