Book Description
"Daddy, Tell Them We Don't Shoot Bambi"spins a true account of what one man did to introduce his sons to the basics of hunting and firearms safety, resulting in major quality time during their formative years. More important than tips on getting started, the author underscores strengthening father-son relationship. The author's closeness to nature is accented as he enthusiastically paints an accurate portrait of the average hunter. Included also are the agonies and disappointments of the hunt, often swept aside by the hunter, as well as some "laugh out loud" stuff hunters encounter. The author offers a 53-year writing background, with many published credits (including hunting) as well as tenure as editor of regional newspapers. He is past-president of the South Carolina Press Association.
Book Description

Let's go racing and bring the camera.......2006-01-20
NASCAR Best shots.
There are some great photos in the book but it is not about photography and how the shots where set up. The subtitle is "the greatest photography in history. The photos in the book are for the most part good and there are some great shots. There are some interesting photographic techniques used to make a fairly mundane shot look Great. There are a lot of photos here that only the NASCAR fans will understand and appreciate. Some of the photos will undoubtedly trigger memories. There are a couple of old photos of Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Fireball Roberts and a few others but most of the photos are in the time period of 1990 to 2003. There is a shot of the Daytona 2001 race where Dale Earnhardt Sr. is in the middle of the pack that made me think about the tragic ending to that race.
What this books does do is capture the NASCAR experience and it does it very well from fans at the track dressed in the gear of their favorite driver to racing photos including the heat of competition, the thrill of winning, the agony of defeat and the overall experience of being at the track.
The forward by Richard Petty is great. He talks about what racing is to him and reflects on some of the photos in the book and what they meant to him. He talks about the history of NASCAR and the changes over the years in terms of popularity, the changes in the cars and going from dirt to asphalt tracks.
There is not lot of reading to be done here. Other then the forward by Petty and a couple pages that describe what the photographers have to go through to get the shots it is all photos with short anecdotes or a brief description of the shot.
A great pictorial essay of all things NASCAR. Fans who love NASCAR will love this book and is worth 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
A valuable resource for those wanting to expand their vocabulary!.......2007-07-24
I can't say this is a pocket-size book, it's actually quite large and very heavy, so probably not ideal for travel. BUT, it's got so many pictures of items you will be using during your trip, I love to recommend this book to both my students as well as travelers. It's got beautifully colored pages and virtually any item you'll ever need to reference in Italian, from food, to vehicles, animals, household items, plants, etc. It's excellent for all those in general who want to expand their Italian vocabulary, as well as for pre-trip preparation. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: As much as there are over 6,000 words and phrases, there is no writing on how they are pronounced! So, you will need to learn some basic language skills to be able to use this book to the fullest.
Cool concept.......2006-11-21
I thought this dictionary was a cool concept. I noticed maybe one or two errors while I surveyed this book at a local bookstore, but apart from that, I liked it alot. Great photographs and good layout. I wish that it had been more extensive like the Oxford version or even an online version. Definitely a good tool for learning Italian -- no better way of knowing than by seeing!

Great for the student, great for the traveler.......2005-10-09
Dorling Kindersley makers of the popular Eyewitness Travel Guides have created an interesitng little volume that works as both a visual dictionary and vocabulary builder. Using full color photographs and diagrams, the book's 360 pages offer fairly comprehensive groupings of nouns with appropriate verbs and some idiomatic phrases for the different categories of People (body parts, expressions, family) Appearance (clothing and grooming), Health (ailments, exercise), Home (house, workshop, decorating, gardening), Services (emergency, banking, telephone etc.), Shopping(markets, florist, pharmacy, etc.), Food (fruits, vegetables, dairy, etc.), Eating Out(restaurant, breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc.) Study (school, science, math etc.), Work (office, computer, farm, etc.), Transportation (roads, cars, trains, buses, planes etc.), Sports (Soccor, basketball, hockey etc.), Leisure (arts, music, games, outdoor activities, camping, etc.), Environment (Space, the earth, landscape, plants, animals, etc.), and reference( time, numbers, weights and measures, maps, useful phrases etc.). The book also includes a full index of Italian to English and English to Italian words cross-referenced with the page number where they appear in the book.
My only complaint about the book is its failure to be Italian specific. As I also have the French English Bilingual Visual Dictionary published by the same company, I can say with some regret that the format and the pictures are identical in both books. In the Food section, for example, there is no section that introduces specifically Italian cheeses, concentrates on depicting Italian desserts or gives some rudimentary introduction to the Italian amero or digestivo. I would have liked to see specific Italian brand names depicted so that when I do go to the market or the coffee bar in Italy, I would already have an idea of what the packaging or product looks like as well as the correct word because I was using the book as a primer prior to my venture. In addition, in the building section, I would like to have seen Italian specific buildings i.e. Il Colosseo along with the generic buildings of the church, the mosque etc.
Although not absolutely necessary, I would like to see the edges of the pages color-coded or indexed like a dictionary with fingertabs which would enable the user to better find the appropriate section with less skimming through the entire book.
As I think this is a great reference for the traveler, I would have loved to have brought it along on a recent trip to Italy. More importantly, as a student of Italian, I fully appreciate the visual cataloguing which jumpstarts any essay writing or conversational skills building in Italian on any of the detailed subjects.
Recommended as a concise, attractively formatted book in the style of other easy to read Eyewitness publications.

Great with one major flaw: ambiguous gender.......2007-07-31
While I enjoy the real live pictures used to illustrate the vocabulary, I am frustrated by the fact that they use the indefinite pronoun to identify gender. For many words, this is not a problem, but for some words, the indefinite pronouns in French and Italian are ambiguous.
For example: garlic - l'ail - der Knoblauch - el ajo - l'aglio
Are "l'ail" and "l'aglio" masculine or feminine? No respectable dictionary should ever leave the gender of a word ambiguous. I hope that they correct this problem in future editions. Until then, I prefer the Firefly Five Language Dictionary, which tastefully adds a gender flag as a superscript after each word:
The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian
Just a fun book.......2006-03-25
I give it 5 stars because it does an excellent job of presenting the top 5 European languages in an easily comparable way. It will NOT teach you a language. But it's intriguing to see word similarities. I've studied all 5 languages (and am currently studying German full-time). I can't say whether folks who have no background in any more than one of the languages would find the book as much fun as I do. But as soon as I saw it I wanted a copy. Too bad it's out of print, although Amazon still has copies available (3-6 weeks' wait).
Pictures worth a thousand words.......2004-12-15
I found this book most helpful in tutoring adult ESL. When tutoring one might have a Spanish speaker one hour and a student from Vietnam or Ivory Coast who may have some second language knowledge of French the next hour. Importantly, the pictures are engaging, clear and interesting. Now, I miss this book because it passed the ultimate test: it was stolen from the tutoring center.
Useful, informative and enjoyable.......2004-07-18
This visual dictionary has more than 1,600 colourful images and its 400 pages are divided into 19 chapters as follows: About the dictionary, How to use this book, People, Appearance, Health, Home, Services, Shopping, Food, Eating out, Study, Work, Transport, Sports, Leisure, Environment, Reference, Index and Acknowledgments.
For each picture you get its meaning in five languages, and for each word you have its definite article showing the gender. Very interesting is the presence of pictures showing actions, so that you get the verbs as well as some useful phrases. At the end of the "Reference" section you have "particles and antonyms" and "useful phrases" - essential phrases, greetings, signs, help, directions, accommodation, eating and drinking. The index is divided into five parts, one for each language, and the names have their gender shown by means of the letters m, n, f .
I particularly enjoy playing with this book by showing a picture and letting my friends guess its meaning in the foreign languages they have studied, and think it's a useful tool for teachers, students or professionals, for the topics are covered in detail. Last but not least, the dictionary is published by DK, i.e. it's a Dorling Kindersley Book, a Penguin Company.
not a pedagogical tool.......2003-10-28
Although, in theory, one might consider books such as this helpful in achieving fluency in five languages simultaneously, this is false. Anyone who speaks more than two languages knows that we store each language in its own special place in our brain, and that location is determined by similarity to other languages also located in our brain. So, when learning Swedish, all of my errors were in German. Never did I mistakenly select a French word while attempting to speak Swedish. Similarly, when learning Italian, never did I reach for a German word by accident. My mistakes were nearly always in Spanish (occasionally in French). The best example of all may be Japanese, for which there was no transfer effect whatsoever. Every mistake I make in Japanese is just bad Japanese, not a word from one of my other languages.
The point is: due to the compartmentalization of languages, this type of book does not facilitate language learning. While I am a big advocate of simultaneous translation, this book, unlike dual language literary texts, offers only individual words, not phrases, for the many colorful entries presented.
I will say that the book is filled with photographs, and this is its true virtue. You may have been wondering how to describe a particular food item in German, Spanish, Italian and French. If so, you may be able to find out the answer to your question here. The sections are thematically arranged, so you can turn quickly to your area of interest, say, auto care, to find out all of the vocabulary that you are looking for. But, of course, a person only needs car part vocabulary when dealing with a broken car, which can happen in only one country at a time.

Ancient Egyptian Designs by Eva Wilson.......2007-03-23
Few , if any, useful designs for THIS Artist / Craftsperson ! I'm glad I bought a used copy, at a discount price.
Unattractive b/w illustrations , and many very busy all-over patterns that do not suggest "Ancient Egypt" even if they are allegedly authentic.
I wouldn't reccommend this book to anyone, there are so many better books on the same topic (such as Dover's "Egyptian Motifs", a clip-art book with crisp, sharp illustrations).
Customer Reviews:
An interesting tale of of a total novice.......2005-12-30
First, this is NOT a training book. There are many better such books around. It is ,rather, the short story of a total novice who gets the totally wrong dog for himself, a Field trial-bred Pointer to hunt grouse in the Northeast. Fortunately, he gets steered to some good professional trainers and after at least three long stays with them for his dog, gets things mostly worked out.
It is an interesting book, but the training is not done by the author; moreover,he has no knowledge of what he's done wrong, either in training or initial selection of his dog, so can't make suggestions to others. It isn't at all impossible to train a bird dog yourself, but you have to do your homework and be more sensible than Healy. Well-written and worthwhile book, though, if you don't expect too much. 3 1/2 stars maybe, especially if you are WAY over your head and want to use a pro trainer. But NOT a training book.
At last - a training book worth reading........2005-10-06
Finally, a training book by someone who knows how to write. Healy does not claim to be an expert trainer. Instead, he narrates his experiences in a way that makes it a pleasure to read. In spite of his less than expert status, Healy recounts his journey in a way that resonates with anyone who's ever trained a dog or wants to.

Good book - at least for the beginning gardener.......2004-02-15
I borrowed this book from the library, and did not get to look through it extensively, but I am a beginning gardener and would definitely like to add this book to my home library to have on hand as a reference. I liked the fact that the book is broken into sections by annuals, perrenials, shrubs, etc. Also, I think every plant mentioned includes a full color picture. That was a high point for me as I am just becoming familiar with many of these specimens. I wish I could give a more thorough review, but at first glance I was very happy with the content of this book.
