In Walking Down the Wild Gary Ferguson offers a good-natured account of a 500-mile hike through the mountains and valleys and geyser fields that make up Yellowstone National Park and its environs. Anyone who has made a long trek will appreciate Ferguson's catalog of moleskin patches, fungicides, and mosquito repellents, but not many folks have had to figure out how to ward off bears every night (pee around your campsite, he advises), steer clear of the occasional cantankerous bull moose, and avoid stepping into steel- jawed traps. It's clear that Ferguson loves his self-appointed mission to protect the Yellowstone ecosystem, and he has a lot to say. "The horizon of the American West," he warns, "is framed more and more not by wild, ragged patches of stone and timber, but by clear-cuts and mine tailings, by housing developments, by oil derricks blazing in what only yesterday was a dark and secret sky."
Customer Reviews:
Something missing in this one.......2004-12-23
Nature enthusiast Gary Ferguson takes us on his extensive backpacking experiences through Yellowstone National Park. He introduces us to the people he meets and his companions, notes the spectacular wildlife and visages that he encounters, discusses some of the ecological issues facing Yellowstone, and gives us a look into the nuts and bolts of making decisions when hiking through the wild.
The Good and the Bad:
I enjoyed some of this book, but generally I found more to complain about than to praise. This book, while lacking in major faults, just seemed to have no spark of its own that would make reading it a requirement. I felt as if I'd heard each environmental discussion before, read similar descriptions of the park in other books, and was frankly skeptically annoyed at Ferguson's claims that encountering a moose bore spiritual meaning, one proof of which was the mystical departure of a cold after seeing a moose.
Ferguson displays an impressive knowledge of the species that he encounters, and I appreciated his willingness to note the wildlife, and to share interesting tidbits of information about everything from wildflowers to otters. For me, these areas were where the book was most successful.
But the overall tone gave me the impression that Ferguson perceives a world in which nature can only be truly understood by those in a special club who are willing to pay homage to the spirit of the land. Ferguson's desire to read meaning into ordinary encounters just rubbed me the wrong way, I suppose, and even now I'm struggling to put my finger on exactly what bothered me so much.
Don't waste your time.......2004-02-19
This is simply a disjointed journal of a series of short hikes with portions deteriorating to a lame account of car camping. This ranks as one of the worst books ever published. Don't waste your time.
Ferguson achieves mastery in nature writing........1998-06-05
This book belongs on the shelf next to Silent Spring and The Sand County Almanac. Ferguson writes with elegance and ease of his experiences in wild country in the Yellowstone area. It is a perfect companion for anyone planning a trip to that marvelous part of the nation. His vivid descriptions of his 500-mile trek through the area are always fascinating. He artfully weaves personal observations into the human history of the area and then into natural history as he argues eleoquently against the commercial interests intent on squeezing the last buck out of our country's vanishing wilderness.

Great!.......2007-09-20
I love survival and have a ton of survival references. I have both the "Survival Handbook" and the "Survival Guide", by Lofty. The Handbook is by far the best reference I have found. Most other survival books are just knock-offs of old Army survival manuals. The Guide is an abreviated version of the Handbook. The Guide is an excellent size to carry with your survival kit. Most of what is cut out of the Guide is foundation to make for easier reading and is not very noticable unless you actually compare each book side-by-side. There are a few exceptions. To save space, some of the pictures of useful plants that are in the Handbook are missing from the Guide.
Overall, a solid buy!
EVERY ONE SHOULD OWN THIS........2007-08-18
I recently moved back to Oregon after being away for 20 years or so and am now very passionate about hiking and nature. While I am not by any means a risk taking hiker I wanted to feel more secure in my surroundings.
This is a great LITTLE book that is easily carried in a backpack and it is packed with all sorts of useful information on outdoor survival. When you read about people that die because they got stuck in the snow it's a wake up call that you should know what to "just in case". May I also reccomend that parents should buy their children WILLY WHITEFEATHER'S OUTDOOR SURVIVAL BOOK and THE RIVER BOOK they are both excellent books for teaching children outdoor survival skills. The outdoors shouldn't be a scary place and there is no reason for people to die because they are lost or stranded after all the wilderness was our ancestors home!
Comprehensive Manual .......2007-08-02
This strong booklet is a well illustrated comprehensive manual of all the things you have learned as a boy scout. It concentrates on the essentials, is very useful and to the point. It helps to behave intelligently when outdoors.
Peace of mind is worth 5 stars!.......2007-06-20
When I bought the SAS Survival Guide, I was looking for a book that would help me gain some knowledge about what to do in certain survival situations along with some interesting tidbits. I initially was upset when I saw the size of the guide (my fault, no one else's) but I eventually came to realize that the size of the guide was perfect for what I needed it for.
So what's to like about this book? There's a TON of great information in this book. The major topics are:
Essentials
Climate & Terrain
Food
Camp Craft
Reading the Signs
On the Move
Survival at Sea
Rescue
Health
Disaster Strategies
There's a wealth of information in between these topics. I'll admit that I bought this book because I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to traveling and I thought this would be a good book to bring along in case something bad happens. For the peace of mind, this book is invaluable.
And what's not to like? Like I said, if you want a book that's bigger, be sure to read the dimensions and get the bigger size. Other than that, the book is great.
Adults, this is a good book to own simply for the peace of mind. In case something happens (god forbid) where you need to know information about not only basic survival skills, but more complex things like what foods are safe to eat, where the best place is to build a shelter, and how to find safe, drinkable water, it's great to have this book on hand. You can't beat the price!
The Best Of.......2007-03-20
I have read a few books on survival and this is the best one I have found up to this point. I have even read the U. S. Army's handbook and this is better.
I purchased the full size book first and then ordered this version so I could pack it easy in my backpack or day pack. The Gem version has all the same information the full size book has. I was going to purchase some survival cards to pack, but have purchased the GEM size book after finding out it was available through a survival seminar I attended with the Boy Scouts.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!!.......2004-04-24
One of my friends bought the big version that had a little more information in it. I read it and when I saw that you could buy a pocket version I was thrilled! Wisemen gives an informative description of everything you need to survive almost anywhere. I'm confident that if I were in a survival situation I would be able to survive.
This book will be very useful and I know it!.......2003-04-29
I just bought this book the other day and it is amazing. It gives you the facts you need for survival. If I get caught in a situation from the book and I don't know what to do, I will be suprized.
GREAT BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE.......2003-03-01
This great book teaches you how to survive. It has so many detailed descriptions with graphs. It is so compact that I even carry it everyday in my backpack. It might be really useful when the war starts or an earthquake takes place.
Outstanding.......2002-12-07
I've had this book for a few years now and have read it over and over again. The information is amazing. There's not a topic that Wiseman doesn't cover or at least touch on.
Not only is it small, it's tough too. It's been on every camping trip, hike, deployment and just about every other trip with me for the past three years and it's still in great shape.
Friends of mine that could have cared less about a suvival book have read mine on airplane rides and afterwards went and bought thier own.
You can't go wrong
Not for the casual.......2002-07-02
With store shelves overloaded by "SAS" books it's unfortunate that this little, uh, Gem can be lost in that crowd. The original format was more like a coffee table book, but for practical purposes this chunky, compact edition is not only the most convenient of those available, it is also arguably the best on the market.
The manual itself is comprehensive, clearly written and with clear (if sometimes limited) illustrations, including a useful colour section; and here the colour is used for more than mere decoration as it provides essential additional information in identifying plants and animals. There is no philosophical description here, little room for the romance of the wild or the ethics of surviving. Instead, "Lofty" Wiseman's guide is a direct parcel of solid information aimed solely at keeping you alive in the worst of situations. Campers and outdoorsmen will find some interesting and useful sections here, but it requires a degree of knowledge and experience to sift them from those which simply must not be used outside of an emergency. This is a fascinating book to dip into, and doubtless most purchasers treat it as such, but it is also an exceptionally effective, reliable and well-crafted source of possibly vital information.

Book Description
Classic Garden Style is all about the decorative, ornamental details that make a garden an extension of the home-an additional room with a variety of purposes. The book begins with a wide variety of containers and supports, including urns, terra cotta pots, zinc containers, trellises, pergolas, and other visual devices you can use to add height and depth to any garden space. Every garden needs a place to sit, and garden furniture-from table and chair sets to hammocks, settees, folding chairs, and other elements that invite seating, reclining, or entertaining-are covered in detail. Accessories of a practical nature come next. The items highlighted here, from birdbaths, baskets, cloches, and greenhouses to watering cans, lamps, and more, have some practical use in the garden in addition to adding visual interest. Strictly ornamental elements inject a sense of whimsy or art into the garden and range from garden gnomes to obelisks, statues, and fountains.
This book catalogues many different types of ornament and decoration you can use to transform an ordinary garden into an exciting and comfortable "outdoor room" that extends the living space of your home.

Book Description
This volume contains a general introduction, English translation of and philological-historical commentary on an anonymous 7th- century A.D. hagiographical text entitled: An Account of the Miracles of the Holy and Glorious Megalomartyr and Wonder-worker Artemios. Also included is a photographic reproduction of the Greek text edited by A. Papadopoulos-Kerameus originally published by the Russian Academy as well as a supplementary essay by John Haldon. The general introduction discusses the historical persona of St. Artemios whose healing activities are predominantly centered on the Church of St. John Prodromos in Constantinople and who "specializes" in healing hernias and diseases affecting the genitals of mostly male patients. This book will interest students of Greek (especially Byzantine) philology, history, hagiography and medicine. As it contains a translation of the original Byzantine Greek text, it should also appeal to those seeking to improve their knowledge of Byzantine Greek.

Courage Through Chaos.......2007-09-06
I loved this book; especially for its matter-of-fact first-hand narration of incredible events in recent history. And it's all true!
This is a fascinating story on several levels. First, the simple factual historical story: how two young Japanese men came to America in 1905, established themselves and their extended families on the west coast, and what happened to members of their families during WWII in both Japan and America; the infamous internment camps in America, the atomic bombings in Japan, and then the post-war years leading to returning to the US in the mid 1950's.
Second, it is the personal story of one woman in that family who lived in both the American and Japanese cultures of the time, and through the extraordinary events of WWII. Born and raised in America, marrying in Japan, forced by circumstances to remain in Japan while it was at war with her native country, America, giving birth to two children during the hardships of war, suffering the anxieties of all war-time wives while her husband was fighting in the Japanese army in Manchuria, and finally persevering to bring her family back home to America.
Finally, it is an account of having truly lived in "both sides" of two warring nations. Giving us a rare firsthand account of "rising above the battlefields", both literally and figuratively, Sayo Fujiwara tells us of her experiences of feeling torn and yet arriving at a place of non-judgmentalness that allows her to move freely and lovingly in both cultures. Her story is rich in detail as she relates her memories of living in two cultures during a time of unheard of upheaval.
