Tips for Jacobs' fans.......2005-11-01

After knowing about Jacobs, I searched the web for some material. I ordered Golf Doctor,Practical Golf and all the video series. Jacobs' main concept is that, whatever you think or do, the main reality of golf is the effect and trajectory you give the ball when you hit it with the face of your club. Thus, analising the flight of the ball, you should be able to know what you did wrong. Beatiful concept! No wonder Jacobs' approach to golf has granted him a legion of followers. Not too silly, nor too technical, it's effective!

Here is my advise:

-BUY BOTH.- To get the core concepts from Jacobs, you can avoid buyin the new "50 lessons" book if you prefer so, but I suggest you to buy Practical Golf together with Golf Doctor, so that you have a general reference book (Practical golf), and a guide for any ball flight (Golf Doctor).
-TRY TO GET THE VIDEOS.- They will save you throusands of dollars in lessons! They are simple and wise and you can feel the teaching approach of the master himself! I do not find the "short game" video as good as the Wfull swing" one, wich is a masterpiece. Get as well the faults and correction ones.

Excellent book! As an avid golfer, I've always had to tinker with my swing mechanics on an almost weekly basis to maintain my game. One quick lesson from this book, which simply suggested changing ball position (and offering an explanation of why) was the perfect fix. Now I am long and straight and loving it! I've been loaning the book to friends and telling them to quit paying for worthless lessons.

Based on his revolutionary idea of ball flight feedback, one can easily find what pattern one's shots are taking, then apply the remedies listed for that ailment.

His two turns and a swing is so simple, but profound. If there is one swing thought I fall back on, this is it. Jacobs concepts are so easy to follow and apply. Soon it will seem as though one can diagnose on the spot and correct.

I enjoy the game of golf as much as anyone. I enjoy great golf architecture, and I enjoy well written novels. Mr. Shackelford may enjoy golf, and may appreciate good golf arcitecture, but he should leave novel writing to creative writers. He is not a bad writer, but fiction is not his fortay. Don't waste your time reading this one.

Geoff Schackelford has done a wonderful job of bringing Dr Alister Mackenzie and his work back to life. I could feel the presence of the Good Doctor as if he were sitting and talking with me. I enjoyed walking Pendleton Golf Links as much as Doc's biting humor. Ever read anything and felt like you knew the person? Take a walk or find a good chair and enjoy yourself and learn about golf course architecture from a master architect and master writer!

Fun read, a must if you like Mackenzie.......1999-04-03

This is a lot of fun to read and an interesting story. The ending is a suprise, but I'm not sure if I liked it, but it did not spoil the rest of the book and the creative way Mackenzie is brought back to life. Bringing the Doctor back to Augusta was great fun, and it makes you think about how much he might not like it, especially with all the changes made to the course this year.

Should be required reading for all golf course architects........1998-12-10

Shackelford, through his young hero and his hero's 'reincarnated' mentor, bring the theory and practise of course architecture back to one of its basic tenents - when completed, the course should be a compliment to its beginnings, not a tricked-up monument to a designers ego. Not overly long, it can easily be consumed in one setting. But be prepared to laugh, cry, and be angry, sometimes all at once. If you're a golfer, serious or otherwise, you will enjoy MacKenzie's subtle dressing down of the popular gimmicks and signature styles of many of the popular designers. Enjoy, enjoy.

The best book I have ever read.......1998-11-21

This is a great book that you can really get into.This 160 page book is a great short book to read. If you like golf or acrhetechure you sould read this book. But you don't have to take my word for it.

arabic in 10 minutes a day.......2006-02-24

I started out with one book, then got 3 more for my children. I homeschool, the book is in an easy format that allowed me to plan lessons (i.e vocabulary, practice writing). However, the arabic letters do not always correspond with the english translation(mainly the vowel placement when the words are in english, does not match the arabic script sometimes, but not often enough for me to not use the book totally). If you know the arabic alphabet and vowels you'll catch this right away. Over all the colored pictures and easy format help keep the children interseted, pulse they are learning lots of new words. The "Arabic Alphabet,how to read and write",(Lyle Stuart) and a good arabic dictionary like "Arabic, practical dictionary",(N.Awde& K.Smith) are used alot to get me though the spelling and reading. If you don't know anyone that speak arabic you may want to try "Living Language Arabic" program, it comes with a book and CD. Take your time and enjoy.

Pro-Language.......2005-03-16

I am not an Arabic language professor, but this book helped me a lot. It is a conversational tool, not a grammar tool. Trying to learn Arabic wasn't easy and of course, its an ongoing project, but I found the book very helpful. My wife and our travel tour guide did as well.

(Note: the map in the front of the book is to designate where the language is spoken, ie. not in Israel. I do not interpret it as a political statement.

not the best language book.......2005-01-29

I'm starting Arabic classes in a few months, but I wanted a bit of a head start as the Arabic language does not seem like it will be very easy to learn. This book seemed like a fun approach: it's very colorful with a lot of picutres and activities. After I bought it I realized that it doesn't have the best format. Arabic is read right to left. The author puts arabic expressions into English sentences (read left to right, of course), even though there are completely different grammar rules for the two languages. As if that isn't bad enough, the transliterations are also read left to right. I think this is very dangerous for someone trying to learn the new system because it trains you to read the language in the wrong direction. Also, all the pictures can get a bit distracting, and, overall, it's hard to focus on learning the language. There is no prep for learning the alphabet--it has only one exercise concerning this major hurdle. I would not recommend this book.

Misconceived.......2005-01-14

I bought this book as I quite like the Spanish in 10 minutes a day. As an Arabic teacher I thought I might be able to use the Arabic edition with my beginner students. However, I found the Arabic version was not well thought out. There doesn't seem to be any attempt to simplify the series model. You are expected to absorb the same amount of vocabulary and grammar as for a European language when that simply isn't realistic for Arabic. The addition of transliteration makes the pages horribly over-crowded and mixing English, Arabic and transliteration in bi-directional instructions is completely confusing. I couldn't follow them as a fluent Arabic speaker, so I doubt a learner would be able to. The whole course shows a lack of understanding of how a learner's needs differ in Arabic from European languages. In summary, stick to Spanish!

This is a good recopilation of designs that include the florist, cubist and intricate crest designs of victorian period. They have no information of who drew them or where they came from but the quality of the drawings is superb maybe even too elaborate for some people.

It's a very complete book that features scrolls, frames, illustrations and simple decorations, most may not be suitable for stencils because of their exagerated amount of details, details are the thing of this book, though there are still enough designs to be made stencils.

Overall this is a good purchase for the amount of designs in relation to the price.

I love these note cards. While my husband and I lived in Louisiana we went to George Rodrigue's gallery and fell in love with the Blue Dog. I just had to have these notecards!

New Blue Dog Art Included, But Quality Not the Same.......2003-08-20

I collect the Blue Dog Calendars for the art (a Blue Dog for every week of the year!). Rodrigue now has a new publisher/printer and the change is very noticable. The calendar for 2004 looks more childlike, with a garish bright yellow background on the cover and bright yellow plastic spiral spine (don't know what else to call it). The print quality is not as good as past calendars either. However, it is a great deal for the price. I LOVE the page with Louis Armstrong and Blue Dog. I've only seen this print in expensive Jazz Fest posters.

If you like Blue Dog (and I do!), you will love these cards. It's not clear in the description, but this set comes with 15 total cards - 3 each of 5 designs. The box is a real collectable, too. I'll buy more - to send and to frame!

The Xeriscape Handbook goes into an area of landscape design not often touched on - landscape design from the plant's point of view. Gayle Weinstein has written a book that will help gardeners and landscape designers at all levels figure out why their planting designs aren't working out as planned and how to start moving in the right direction to achieve desired results. It's in big part due to Weinstein's writing style, which succeeds in making complicated subjects interesting without being overly simple or to scientific.

The "root" of the problem is often found in the choices they make in plants for their site. To help people make the best choices, Weinstein's book provides plenty of good information about the environment and on why plants grow where they do. The book tells you how to organize plant groups according to their needs for water, sunlight, etc. to achieve what Weinsten calls "a compatible alliance among the garden, landscape, and natural world."

One of the best things about the Xeriscape Handbook is that anyon in any part of the country can use it. Using the steps outlined in the book, you gain a better understanding of your site and the unique challenges you face in landscape projects. Yes, the book pays particular attention to more arid regions of the country, but it teaches all readers how to "read" their own site. Landscape Architects call this "site analysis" and use the techniques as one of the first steps in professional design. You can use the techniques too, no matter where you live and this book provides a clear outline on the steps involved in fun and interesting ways.

Another Plus to this book is that it provides lots of good information on maintaining plants once you have selected them and have your design in the ground. Utilizing the "Principals of Xericsape" found in the book, you will end up with a landscape design that uses less water and is easier to care for, while still providing beauty and functionality. That saves not only money, but minimizes many of the frustrations faced in gardening.

The bottom line is that everyone can use the information in this book to create better designs, in ways that connect and relate their design to the beauty of the natural world...no matter where you are in it.

As a Landscape Architect, I highly recommend this book along as a good addition to any gardening library.

I feel that this book is a good learning tool for young kids today. Many of our youths don't know how hard was back in the day to get what you wanted and needed. The book tells about a strugle a young man went through and I feel that all teenagers and young adults should definately pick this one!

Henderson's book offers a personal insight to the harse world of child abuse and survival on the streets of the 'hood'. To see him survive this cruel environment and become a model citizen is an inspiration to people everywhere.

I highly recommend this book, especially to teenagers and young adults.

The author has a unique way of making his story vivid to the readers...from the very beginning I was hynotized by the unique way the words leaped off the page and came into existence as I read the book word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, and chapter by chapter! This books warms the soul and touches the heart. I can sympathize with the author as he fought hard to find himself in life, and became an example to all that if one has the will to make it on the streets, one can. This book is evidence that no one has to die all alone if one is determined to have life and have it more abundantly.

Unedited But not bad for a first time writer.......2001-05-08

In my opion this book was a good leap into the writers guild. Anyone would have to say that it is a truly original piece. I havent completly finished reading the book but it becomes more interesting as I flip through the pages. Like all books it has its weak points, but some of the unbelieveable humor in it takes away from you being concerned with those weaknesses.

Some parts in the book made it seem like he thinks he is the center of the universe, but who doesn't think that about themselves. Many parts of the book will make you laugh at times because of some of the things he said he has actually done. But more and more over many may say that there is laughter in the truth.

In writing this book I think the author was trying to define his life in a way that you will see that being alone at times will cause you to feel like you where the blame for everything that happens bad in your life. I Don't Want to Die All Alone is exactly what he is trying to say. And by doing some of the things he has claimed he did will put you in that category right with him.

In close I must say that the author's first attempt at a non fiction novel was a well felt one and other should be motivated to tell it like it is if they desire too.
