Book Description
From Chamonix and St. Moritz in the European Alps to Aspen, Colorado, and Lake Louise, Canada, this beautifully illustrated volume features 40 of the most celebrated, fashionable, and diverse skiing destinations in the world. Each resort is treated individually, with the author's vivid and lively description, handsome color photos, and an information panel that tells readers how to get there, the site's altitude, number of lifts, types of pistes or ski runs, the resort's special advantages, and its drawbacks. Each description also features a small map showing nearby cities and approaches by highway. The resorts and sites described encompass the globe, and are categorized by home country. Described in France are Val d'Isère et Tignes, Courchevel et les Trois Vallées, la Grave et les Deux Alpes, and others. Included among Austrian resorts are St. Anton-am-Arlberg, KitzbÂhel, and Ischgl. For Switzerland, the book covers Zermatt, Berbier, St. Moritz, and others, and for Germany, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Still other resorts include Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo and Selva e Val Gardena, Scandinavia's Ã
re and Riksgränsen and Narvik, Canada's Whistler and Blackcomb, Lake Louise and Banff, and Fernieand for the U.S., Aspen, Jackson Hole, Lake Tahoe, Vail, Telluride, and others. Literally the whole world is covered, including resorts in Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. Described for the extra-adventurous advanced skier are several remote "helidrop" areas that are not resorts, but which feature wonderful slopes. Among them are Manali in the Himalayas and Valdez in Alaska. Hundreds of beautiful full-color photos help make this handsome book a reliable ski vacationer's guide and an armchair traveler's dream book.
Customer Reviews:
Top Ski Resorts.......2007-01-09
Informative of the ski resorts and areas. Great pictures! Needs to be reedited though. My copy had 10 duplicate pages.
Not the most comprehensive book.......2005-10-12
So this is not the most comprehesive book out there...not sure if one exists that can be comparable to some ski web sites out there. I can't believe there is no ski map to associate with each location. I mean, we are talking about the "Top Ski Resorts of the World!" This is not your run-of-the-mill, three-hour drive local ski resort unless you happen to live next to Whistler Mountain (Damnn you). The least they could do is provide a small ski map of the world-renown resort. And there is just not enough information or stats for each mountain. Despite the information shortcoming, I still give it three stars for the beautiful photography - the only reason I bought the book in the first place - I'm no fool.
Coffee Table Only.......2002-12-27
I would love to visit all of the ski areas mentioned in this book, but the book does not describe or illustrate any of them well. Each resort has been given approximately 4 pages of space in the book. There are a few pictures of slopes or base areas, but not enough to give the reader any feel for what the resorts really looks like. In addition, the information the author conveys about each area is quite minimal. There is a map of where in the world each of the resorts is located, and a small box containing directions to the particular resort, mountain height, number of lifts and difficulty level of runs. However, there are no trail maps. The author's incredibly brief references to a few of his favorite runs may be helpful if one writes down their names and finds them upon arriving at the resorts, yet there is not enough description of the terrain to truly inform the reader of what these ski areas are like. Furthermore, no information is given about where to stay or eat once one has arrived at the resorts. While this book looks attractive sitting on a coffee table, its use should be limited to just that.
Book Description
With the original publication of his sentence composing series, Don Killgallon changed the way thousands of high school English teachers and their students look at language, literature, and writing by focusing on the sentence. In this expanded series, Killgallon presents the same proven methodology but offers all-new writing exercises for middle school, high school, and college students.
Unlike traditional grammar books that emphasize sentence analysis, these worktexts asks students to imitate the sentence styles of professional writers, making the sentence composing process enjoyable and challenging. Killgallon teaches subliminally, nontechnicallythe ways real writers compose their sentences, the ways students subsequently intuit within their own writing.
Designed to produce sentence maturity and variety, the worktexts offer extensive practice in four sentence-manipulating techniques: sentence unscrambling, sentence imitating, sentence combining, and sentence expanding. It's demonstrably true that Sentence Composing can work anywhere--in any school, with any student.
Customer Reviews:
Do Yourself a Favor.......2004-01-15
My experience has been that 9th and 10th grade students are engaged by the lessons in this book. The examples come from both popular and literary works. The exercises build logically. Most students can do the work without questions, allowing time to work one-to-one with struggling students. Using these lessons gave the class a common language around creating complex sentences, which helped in the transfer of skills from the writing exercises to the use of complex sentences in essays and other written work.
Sentence Composing For High School: A Worktext On Sentence.......2000-06-16
This guide provides many sentence revisions for the working English classroom. It is an excellent choice for the beginning teacher and can be used as a standby for the master teacher. Useful at all high school levels. I highly recommend this text for any high school English curriculum!

Good service.......2005-10-20
My item came on time and in good condition. Those are the two important things to me.
Tetra Power!!.......2004-10-27
This book is wonderful. An excellent and concise book for the beginner who wants to start keeping characins. There is a short technical introduction followed by tips of setting up a characin tank. It also highlights a majority of the characins that are available for the hobby. Each of the characin featured in the book is supported by a brief but rich description of its living habitat, water quality (pH and water hardness) and the type of food it needs. The pictures in the book are clear and the photographs are well-taken.

Book Description
Meissen and Serves style of porcelain - First Period Worcester
Book Description
Understanding the flowering plants of any region begins with the recognition of families. This remarkable volume, created to serve students, professionals, and other plant enthusiasts, covers 130 temperate to tropical families common in North America with detailed illustrations and modern referenced commentaries. Each family discussion includes a diagnosis and summary of characteristics, distribution data, important economic members, and pollination ecology. The book's most striking feature is Zomlefer's 158 original pen-and-ink plates depicting intricate dissections of 312 species.
The content of the family discussions is geared to readers who have completed one introductory biology course. For readers less familiar with botanical terminology, Zomlefer provides an illustrated glossary of 551 terms with more than 300 drawings. Other important tutorial features are twenty-two detailed charts that compare pertinent characteristics of certain related plant groups and a general chart that summarizes the salient features of the families covered in the text. Both amateurs and professionals will particularly enjoy the chapter on examining, dissecting, and sketching live material.
Customer Reviews:
Guide to Flowering Plant Families.......2007-01-18
The book is just fine ... that's why I ordered it ... it's a good book.
However, I thought I was buying the book USED at a less-than-new price. The price I actually paid was the new price. And I did receive a new book, thank you.
My question: Why didn't I pay for and receive the USED book that I wanted? I wonder if there is something in the ordering process that I missed. This is the first book order from amazon.
Great resource for a beginner.......2007-01-10
I got this book because I needed to learn about plants and I needed a no nonsense, basic introduction to the plant families of the world--not just trees, not just herbs, and not just information from one part of the world. This book is all that and more. The descriptions of each family use botanical terminology, there are clear line drawings of the taxonomically informative characters, and economically important species are listed in each family. Because I am not an expert on plants, I can't comment on the accuracy of the information, but I can say that this book has been a great resource for me, as a novice botanist. My only complaint (and this is a minor one, because this is not supposed to be a field guide) is that I am unfamiliar with many of the families and color photos would really help me to learn to recognize the plants in nature. I highly recommend this book.
Guide to Flowering Plant Families by Wendy B. Zomlefer [Paperback] .......2005-07-04
This should be a five start rating but something happened when I wrote the review so I can't change the star rating. Suffice it to say that this is a very comprehensive book with wonderful black and white illustrations. A very useful guide for students of botanical art or for anyone interested in plants.
Missing Families.......2005-05-06
Many floras and the USDA Plant Database use Cronquist's classification system. Several families in that system are missing in Thorne's system as used in this book. I would suggest supplementing this book with James Payne Smith's "Vascular Plant Families."
Very handy reference to have around........2005-04-05
Occasionally I have to (try) and key out plants at work. Not having a botany background makes this difficult and when I get stumped on a particular term or piece of plant anatomy I call up this book to walk me through the terminology. It is particularly useful if you can key the plant out to family level. It's picture (line art) illustrations are very clear and help tremendously when trying to understand what it is the key is referring to. Well worth the 35 dollars if you deal with the anatomy of plants at all or need to know family characteristics.

Book Description
Volumes III and IV of this encyclopaedia provide a novel classification of the monocotyledons, a group encompassing plants of most diverse life-forms such as aquatics, terrestrial and epiphytic herbs, and tall trees. Of the 106 families now recognized 104 are treated in the two volumes, while the economically or horticulturally important grass and orchid families are relegated to two subsequent volumes. The classification followed here is based on recent molecular studies as well as on the vast body of information available on this plant group. The wealth and precision of information, but also the keys for the identification of genera and details on their properties, including distribution and diversification, make this work an important source for both the scholar and the practitioner in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences..

Book Description
This book is designed to enable students of botany to gain some knowledge of the relationships between families of plants. The text of each of the 100 plant families described is in two parts. The first part gives the general characteristics of the family, mentions some of the principal economic and ornamental plants and includes a section on classification. The second part describes in detail a typical representative of the family, as far as possible a plant which is common in the wild or in cultivation and therefore easily obtainable. In this new edition there is a larger page-size, and also a different layout of the text. In addition, a considerable number of illustrations have been redrawn and many more added, including drawings of whole plants. Alterations to the text include extensive revision of the introduction, an increase in the number of comparative tables, and the addition of a table of family characters.

Great Informational Guide for Publisher 2000 users!.......2000-03-29
Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Publisher 2000 in 24 hours is an excellent guide to those who need help learning, or already know, Publisher 2000. The information is separated into easy-to-find sections, and is in language that is common to everyday people - not just computer wizards. I already knew how to use Publisher, but read the book to brush up on skills and to learn how to post a web page on the internet. It was a great tool to guide me. Others I know purchased the guide to learn how to use Publisher more effectively. I would recommend this guide to anyone who wants to learn about the many tasks that Publisher 2000 can do.
