Combined investigations of ostracod communities, pollen, and stable isotopes were carried out on Lateglacial limnic high-resolution sediment sequence from Miesenheim in Germany. The pollen data confirm the presence of Meiendorf Interstadial, the first interstadial after the Pleniglacial. The former shallow lake was formed at the end of the Pleniglacial and partly dried out between the Bolling and the Allerod. Lake Laach tephra (12,880 warve yr BP) marks the top of this profile. The intensive colonization with ostracods at the beginning of the Meiendorf Interstadial is characterized by great instability of their populations. Only ostracods from the upper littoral zones of lakes, ponds or temporary pools were found. The stable isotope data (@d^1^8O, @d^1^3C) of the valves of the Cypridopsis vidua, Herpetocypris reptans, and Candona candida reflect the different microhabitats of these three species and show a general climatic development during the Meiendorf Interstadial with two summer temperature peaks, one at the beginning and a weaker one in the second half of the Meiendorf Interstadial.

Ostracods may be excellent organisms to use as indicators of water quality, but such an idea requires detailed knowledge about their ecology, distribution, biology, and habitat requirements. To show whether ostracods are useful as indicator species, the patterns of their diversity and their relationship with seven major physicochemical variables in eleven different aquatic ecosystems were examined in the Bolu region. A total of 18 species were found from 11 disturbed and undisturbed habitats of the region. Five species (Ilyocypris inermis, Ilyocypris gibba, Tonnacypris lutaria, Eucypris virens, Cypris pubera) were new records for the region. In disturbed sites numbers of cosmopolitan ostracods were higher than the numbers of non-cosmopolitans, suggesting a close relationship between increasing numbers of cosmopolitan ostracods and low water quality. Results seem to support the idea that factors of disturbance have strong, possibly long-term effects, on both ostracod species diversity and community structure and functioning in freshwater habitats.

This book is absolutely excellent if you love art nouveau. I was very very pleased with the color designs which are spot on for nouveau times. If you are interested in arts such as stenciling, tattooing, or decorating than this is a must have book.

I received this book very quickly and did not have to wait to receive it.

300 Art Nouveau Designs and Motifs in Full Color.......2000-05-25

Although this is a nice book, it did not meet my expectations. There are many art nouveau designs, most of which are printed using only two or three colors each. The designs are nice, but the way they are printed would make transferring them for use to be very difficult. If you are interested in the colors and designs of this era, it would be a good book. But if you are looking for clip art or ready-to-use designs for art projects, I would recommend purchasing something else.

The book teaches to cultivate some easily orchids found at especialized stores.
The photos need to have more ligth, many are dark; its a book indicated only for beginners.

Very nice reference.......2006-08-31

Frowine lists a multitude of orchids within this book that have been observed to be fragrant either through first hand knowledge or word of mouth. For many of the orchids, he lists some of the basics such as fragrance (i.e. what it smells like), distribution, and some cultivation information. The cultivation information isn't very detailed, but this is a book about fragrance and cultivation information can be found in other books and on the web. For me, the most useful section of the book is the appendices. There are 6 appendices and they are all great:

A) Orchids by Ease of Culture
B) Orchids by Light Requirements
C) Orchids by Nighttime Temperature Preference
D) Orchids by Intensity of Fragrance (my favorite, also describes the fragrance)
E) Orchids by Time of Fragrance
F) Orchids by Season of Bloom

Rhetorical Interaction in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 is a formal analysis of Paul's rhetorical interaction with the Corinthians over the issues of participation in the cultic meal (1 Cor. 10:1-22) and the eating of idol food (1 Cor. 8:1-13, 10:23-11:1). The thesis is that Paul's theology and rhetoric are predicated on knowledge and love. Major portions of the book employ rhetorical, sociological, archaeological, and historical-critical approaches to examine the triangular interaction between Paul, the Corinthians, and the biblical texts, paying particular attention to the complex configuration of the Corinthian congregation, including the influence of proto-Gnosticism, as well as the ways Paul responded to the shifting situation and different issues. The two chapters on rhetorical-hermeneutical theory and criticism are especially creative as the author suggests a Chinese hermeneutic for cross-cultural dialogues, the issue of ancestor worship being a specific example.

I noticed this book, Rhetorical Interaction in 1 Cor 8 and 10, in Thiselton's commentary on 1 Corinthians published by Eerdmans. I checked it out and find the work to be readable, giving broad background of info on hermeneutics, rhetorical studies, ancient Greco-Roman religious background, and detailed exegesis on 1 Cor 8 and 10. The last chapter on applying the research to Chinese culture is fascinating to read also.

A bargain of sorts.......2002-09-23

I picked this up on a remainder table for $7.99. It was just the sort of short article compendium I was looking for - something I could pick up and read brief snippets.

However, one particular aspect of the book's style is amazingly annoying. The author (PATRICIA J. MacNee on the cover, but MARIE J. MacNee on the publication page) chooses to tell us in the introduction that "Entries are lively, easy to read, and written in a straighforward style that is geared to challenge -but not frustrate - readers. Difficult words are defined within the text...enabling readers to learen the vocabulary appropriate to a particular subject without having to consult other sources for definitions." This has resulted in a book full of synonyms or definitons in parentheses. What the author sees as being 'difficult words' are items such as 'monopoly', 'sitting duck', 'paroled', 'alibi', 'maimed', 'silos', and 'alias'. At times I felt like I was reading a book for the learning-impaired or those for whom English is a second or foreign language. However, the style and the contents of the book (and other undefined vocabulary) seemed to be aimed at a more educated audience. These definitions would have been better included in a glossary in the back of the book.

Also, the recommendations in sidebars for movies and books related to the topics under discussion seemed far-fetched - the section on Louis Lepke comes with a recommendation for Jennifer Jason Leigh movie "Last Exit to Brooklyn" simply because it discusses the Mafia and union men, something Lepke was associated with...

In short, a strangely prepared book, whose target market I really can't determine. It certainly isn't me.

Enjoyable Read, Interesting Reference.......2002-08-19

The Crime Encyclopedia is a fun book. You can flip it open at any point and learn about a criminal and their crimes. The book covers a wide variety of criminals, mostly from the twentieth century. From Billy The Kid to Kevin Mitnick, there's a few pages about some of the shadiest people of recent memory.

The real value of this book is as a reference for cultural literacy. People mention thugs like Bonnie and Clyde in casual conversation, and now you can read up on the real story. Some shady characters, like Pancho Villa, have cultural meaning, too.

There are many books out there on this subject, but this one is clear & easy to follow. This book would be useful to anyone who had an interest in crime/criminals but was perhaps unsure how "into it" he or she wanted to become. Makes a great reference book.

For Children?.......2005-12-24

I looked all over the cover of the book for something that states that this book was meant for children. Within every page are definitions to any large word. For example, in one chapter detailing Al Capone, its stated in one incident he sent down thugs to election booths to rough up voters, it then followed in parenthesis a definiton of what an election booth was. Over and over this book has definitions for the simplest words. Its too the point of annoyance. IF I didnt know better, id say this book was one long joke poking fun at people's intelligence.
