Wrong Chapter, Right Book.......2006-07-29

This is a magnificent novel - a riveting study of man and sports. However, the 30th Anniversary Sport Book Classic edition has the last chapter first and then repeated at the end. It's a printing error apparently and it's totally out of order because you accidentally read the climax to the novel first. The real first chapter is here on the Amazon site. If you get the edition where both Monday chapters are the same, skip the first one!

I have read and re-read this book 3 or 4 times.
It just rings true.
Gent's insights into the personalities of the athletes
and those who idolize them are dead-on accurate.

Great Story....physically flawed book.......2005-02-11

I bought this 30th annivesary "Hall of Fame Edition", and I just finished reading it. I thought it was weird that the first chapter and last chapter were identical. I didn't find out until just now, that my book was misprinted. Chapter 1 in the book, was NOT the same as Chapter 1 (Monday) in the "Look Inside" that's linked above.

That aside, I really liked the book. I don't think I missed too much without the first chapter. I've never seen the movie, that's next on my list.

Chapter 7 (Sunday) was a really GREAT chapter about a football game, really made me feel like I was IN THE GAME!

Go ahead, read the book. But, be wary of the "Hall of Fame Edition"

Ahead of its time .......2004-12-24

Peter Gent wrote other books after North Dallas Forty, but none of them were as forceful, or prescient, as this one. Fans and the media are always surprised by the drug scandals in the NFL. The revelations about cocaine and steroid use in the last 20 years have been greeted with a sense of shock and incredulity, as if these problems never existed in the NFL's glory years. North Dallas Forty is a thinly fictionalized account of the Dallas Cowboys of the late 60's and early 70's. Needless to say, drug use was just as big a problem in the NFL then as it is now, as Gent graphically illustates through the trials and tribulations of Phil Elliot. Anyone who has read this book realizes that drugs are not a new problem in sports, but a continuing one. The book is laced with savage humor, graphic sex, and an unflinching exploration of the dark side of the NFL. It is fun to pick out the fictional versions of real-life figures. B.A. Quinlan is obviously Tom Landry. Seth Maxwell is obviously Don Meredith. Delma Huddle is obviously Bob Hayes. This book illustrates that athletes are basically the same people that they were 30 years ago. They aren't better or worse. The main difference is a 24 hour media that magnifies players' actions for entertainment value and increased salaries.

Still the Best Novel Ever About Professional Football.......2004-01-31

Pete Gent's most famous work was reissued a few months ago and hopefully it garners as much attention now as it did when originally issued. Ostensibly a thinly veiled semi-biography of his own pro football experiences, the book, when originally issued, was considered scandalous as it exposed the underside of the professional football world.

At the center of the novel is Phil Elliot, a fairly talented tight end who relies on pain killers to get him through the season. He carouses with the quarterback, only to ultimately find that the man he considered his closest friend when not be there for him in the end, and downs alcohol and drugs with a sense of abandon. To Elliot's mind, he is a team player because of his willingness to play with pain, taking painful, burning shots of cortisone in his knees in order to practice and play. But to his coaches, he is a loose cannon who they will only tolerate so long as he is useful to the team.

Ultimately, Elliot loses the game he loves. He learns that his only real value to the team is his ability to perform and when the side issues with him outweigh his talent to catch a pass, he loses that which he loved above all else (even if he would not admit it to himself): the game.

If you've seen the movie, you've only gotten a taste of the novel. Gent has written other books, but this remains his best. The book exposed a raw nerve at the time of its first release and was decried in many corners as nothing more than the fanciful tirade of a embittered former player. Instead, over the years we've learned that Gent's revelations regarding sex, drugs, and alcohol abuse in the NFL were all too true. And despite stringent drug testing rules, all of the problems exposed in his novel are still present in the NFL today.

Having enjoyed both North Dallas 40 and other titles by Peter Gent, I was surprised to find this particular title somewhat lacking. Of course, it is a reprisal of the characters we met in the original ND40 but quite a few years have passed and the lives of the main characters are not quite the same as they were. I would have prefered if the last impression we had of them would have been from ND40. The follow up wasn't needed.

Quite Practical Indeed.......2005-08-23

The compilation of articles in this very entertaining and informative book, gave me several insights into the different aspects of writing. I am constantly surprised and delighted by the variety and depth of the articles. I particularly appreciate the "practical" aspects of what an author does once their book is published. I also liked the website information that is included. This is not a book to read in one sitting.
I'm always looking to read a good book on writing, and this definitely will be added to my collection.

A Pratical Book, Indeed.......2005-02-09

This book approaches writing from the perspective of professional writers. In it, you will encounter essays regarding various types of and approaches to writing. What is practical and most useful about this book is its large appendix. Contained within is a collection of contacts, addresses and websites centered on grants, publishers, agents and other useful info.
The essays and musings do contain helpful recommendations, but not all of it can be called pearls of wisdom.

This isn't the greatest of its kind; I'd recommend $30 Writing School over this, depending on what aspects of writing you'd like covered (and how much you want to spend). That said, this is certainly not the worst of its kind either. Actually, maybe owning both will cover the most angles for you.

I'd rate Practical Writer at about 3.5 stars, but flip through it so you have an idea of exactly what advice is given. Different texts will address different aspect of writing for publication.

This book might not teach much about creating the perfect novel of constructing character dialogue, but think of this one as a great item to have on your reference shelf, along with your 2005 Writer's Market.

(If the scale were made into a more logical ten-point scale, I'd rate this book at about 7/10 or 70%. It's difficult to know what the value of 3/5 stars is. I think Amazon should switch scales)

Digs Beyond the Initial Target............2004-04-23

This book, a compilation of articles from "Poets and Writers" magazine hits the mark and much, much more. The book covers the process of writing from idea to conclusion to promotion of the finished product.

Successful writers know that simply producing a book is just the beginning. The chapters on "How to Give a Rousing Reading" and "Publicity for Your Small Press Title" are incredibly valuable.

In the words of one of the contributing authors, Robert McDowell, "Presenting your new book to the public is really no different than presenting yourself."

There are tons of resources which will prove invaluable to the active writer - the writer seeking professional success.

Great Information By People Who Know Witing.......2004-04-20

I recently took a writing workshop and the instructor told us that if we are not yet reading POET AND WRITERS magazine, we should be. He found the magazine articles helpful when he first started writing because the articles in the magazine are written by both established and emerging writers as well as by professionals in the publishing field. He still reads the magazine and finds as a published writer, the articles are accurate about the writing life. Since he is already a published author, I believed his advice to be reliable. As a result of this workshop, I also met other writers who have been published in this magazine and make the same claim. When I saw the book THE PRACTICAL WRITER advertised in the magazine and realized it was a "best of" collection from the magazine, I thought that the book could be rather helpful.

Practical is the key word in the title. While the book does have some content about writing theory, most of the book deals with publishers and the writing world. Since I have yet to have anything published, I may not be qualified to say how helpful the articles in the book actually are, but it does give an aspiring writer a good introduction of all that is involved from beginning a manuscript to its completion. The book helps a person interesting in writing look at the possibility realistically. Each of the articles in the book was originally featured in POETS AND WRITERS magazine by contributors who have a working knowledge of writing and publishing.

The book is divided into five sections: Conceptions of craft, Initial contract with a publisher, working with professional in the field, selling a book, and jobs in writing. An article on writing by Robert Philips completes the book. The book also contains helpful information about grants and awards, writing conferences and residences and resources for writers.

For me, collections such as THE PRACTICAL WRITER help me set goals as far as writing is concerned. Fantasizing about writing is something many people do, and writing can be a cathartic experience, at least for me. Getting something to work on paper is a far different matter, and collections such as this work do help me to focus and try to produce something that is of quality and is also true to me. Hopefully it will help other aspiring writers too!

The nuts and bolts of getting your writing published.......2004-03-31

"The Practical Writer" is a collection of thirty-one articles by experts involved in the various stages of publishing poems, books and articles. Each piece concentrates on a different aspect of the writer's trade, from giving a lyric poem that final polish, to understanding rejection letters, to negotiating a book contract.

That there are thirty-one contributions is in itself a measure of the complexity of the writer's world. In addition to editors, writers must deal with agents and publicists, booksellers and literary organizations. There are readings to give, flyers to print, contracts to negotiate, and book tours to arrange. For people used to solitary work, that can be overwhelming.

Writers, as several of the contributors point out, are sometimes out of the loop as far as the `business' of publishing is concerned. Even though the industry revolves around them, the writers themselves may be unaware of what drives companies to accept one piece of work and reject another, or promote one book to best seller status while letting another languish on a back shelf.

Therese Eiben and Mary Gannon of Poets& Writers magazine have brought together a wonderfully knowledgeable and supportive group of people. "The Practical Writer" is full of solid, substantive advice. My copy promises to become one of those books whose spines will develop the "telltale creases" of repeated reading.

I am the President of Angel Pups, an organization that trains kids (middle school and up) to work with their dogs and then takes them to visit nursing homes. Originally published in 1856, The Kidnapped and the Ransomed is the personal recollection of Peter Still, a black slave. He was stolen as a child from his home in New Jersey, yoked to servitude for more than forty years in Kentucky and Alabama, and finally freed with the help of a pair of Jewish brothers. It is the only nineteenth-century slave narrative to show the participation of the Jews in the antislavery movement before the Civil War.

The reader follows Still through a succession of brutal masters, a clandestine courtship, marriage involving separation, births and deaths, the formation of a daring plan for freedom, and harrowing action. No stage drama could be as wrenching as this true rendering of a slave’s experience in America. Kate E. R. Pickard was in contact with Still while she taught at the Female Seminary in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Maxwell Whiteman was the archival and historical consultant for the Union League of Philadelphia and coauthor, with Edwin Wolf II, of The History of the Jews of Philadelphia from Colonial Times to the Age of Jackson. The original introduction by Rev. Samuel J. May, an abolitionist, has been retained.
