Book Description
Welcome to the Oregon Coast -- 363 miles of cliff-edged cpaes, public beaches, wild rivers, sand dunes, rainforest, and coastal mountains. The new second edition of this popular guide to Oregon's Coast has everything you need to plan a trip or a hiking adventure, with detailed information about campgrounds, lighthouses, parks, towns, wildlife, and more than 185 trails. The book covers Washington's Long Beach peninsula and Northern California's Redwood Coast, too!
Customer Reviews:
Very detailed info.......2007-08-09
This guide was great. It enabled me to plan for hikes, and had maps and all information needed to get to the places and take the hike without buying separate maps, etc. Good basic information on the hikes, what to expect, etc. My only complaint was that there was very little "subjective" information on how hikes compared with others, such as "This hike has the best views in the area", which would help decide which to do if you don't have alot of time.
A great book for exploring the Oregon Coast.......2006-10-17
William Sullivan, the author of this guide book, is reputed to be a fifth generation Oregonian who grew to love the Oregon coast as a child spending time in the family cabin in Lincoln City. As a fourth-generation Oregonian and veteran of numerous day trips and camping trips as a child and adult to the Oregon coast, I have found the book to be a great guide and an eye-opener to places and trails that for years I had driven by without noticing or stopping.
I live in Salem, Oregon and for the last few years I have carried this book in the trunk of my car. I try to get to at least one new place or hike out of the book every time I go to the coast (i.e. the 'shore', for you east-coast types).
If you are stuck in Portland over a weekend on a business trip or planning a vacation in Oregon, this is the book to buy if you want to get off Highway 101 and see some of the spectacular sights on the Oregon coast.
The only shortcoming of the book is the lack of any color photographs.

Book Description
Welcome to Oregon's Coast -- 363 miles of cliff-edged capes, public beaches, wild rivers, sand dunes, rainforest, and coastal mountains. Many of the top attractions are within easy reach of Highway 101, but others are accessible only by trail. To help you explore both the civilized and the wild parts of Oregon's spectacular shore, this book blends two kinds of guides -- a detailed Travel Guide for touring by car and a complete Trail Guide for planning adventures on foot.
The book is divided into 18 sections from Washington's Long Beach south to California's Redwood National Park. Each section begins with a Travel Guide that includes an overview map and a description of the area's car-accessible attractions. Both the map and the text are annotated with symbols identifying campgrounds, lighthouses, museums, and other popular destinations. Here too are tips for bicycling, birdwatching, kayaking, canoeing, and horseback riding.
The overview maps show major Highway 101 mileposts, so it's easy to use the Travel Guide as a highway logbook. As you drive from one area to the next, simply flip forward or backward through the book to the next Travel Guide map.
Following each Travel Guide section are descriptions of that area's hiking trails. To help you choose a hike, symbols in the upper right-hand corner of each hike's heading identify trail features. For example, 64 of the hikes have symbols recommending them as best trails for hikers with children, 36 hikes begin near campgrounds, and 44 pass through old-growth forest. Travelers with limited physical abilities need not miss the fun, because a list at the back of the book describes 42 paved, planked, or graveled trails accessible to everyone. Altogether, the guide covers every trail in Oregon's scenic coastal region.

The new "100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range, 2nd Edition" is available in April, 2002 (ISBN #096778302X). I'm giving slide shows about the new book throughout Oregon -- for dates and times, please check my Web site at www.oregonhiking.com.
Great travel book for Oregon Coast.......2000-10-23
I have used extensively this book for traveling at the south oregon coast. The directions to the trail heads are very clear, the maps are well done and the hike descriptions are first rate. Sullivan is a wonderful writer. His other hiking books are also very well done. I recommend any book that he has written. His hiking books are the best that I have ever seen.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money shows that any numbskull can master personal finance. In this second edition, a father-and-daughter writing team, Robert K. Heady and Christy Heady, give readers the best advice culled from their many years of experience in consumer rights and money management. The Headys believe that money must be managed for the long haul and that there are no quick ways to build wealth. The guide is easy to read, witty, and scornful of the hype dished out by banks and other peddlers of personal finance. It provides a plethora of personal-finance tips for consumers, including how to get the best deal on a mortgage, pay off debt, and bank online. The authors expose financial pitfalls such as bank-sold mutual funds, dealer financing for motor vehicles, extended warranties, and those dreaded bank fees. A full chapter is devoted to the evils of credit cards, which they feel is the biggest ripoff in the financial world. The writers contend that the toughest thing about saving is making the decision to do it. You should get going by putting aside a little amount of money each month through a mutual fund or dividend reinvestment plan. "The whole idea of managing money is to save a dollar here and there and then take that dollar and build it into two," they write. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to understand that. --Dan Ring

If You Know Nothing About Financing; Start Here..........2003-07-06
This has the basic knowledge need to manage your finacing ranging from simple budgeting, credit, stocks and mutual funds, Certificate of Deposit, how to read the market and the prime rate and what it all means. Also, it provides the mental mindset you need to manage and spend money properly, without resorting to short term spending splurges. There's tables for calcuating college funds, morgages, and retirements but most importantly how to avoid the many traps and scams many vendors use to make money off of you without providing any extra services. The one thing I found somewhat worrysome is the way the authors protrayed the banks and other institutions to the point of scaring the reader into being nearly paranoid of all financial instistutions. The fees these institutions charge are describe in the book with good details. A good "how to avoid pitfalls" book.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money, Second Ed.......2001-06-04
I love this book! Before reading this book, I wondered how anyone could ever save money in the world today. It has helped me to mangage my money easily. An easy to read book, which I use now as a reference whenever I have a question concerning my personal finances. I finally started a 401K, bought a house, a new car, and I am finally learning to save some money, instead of living paycheck to paycheck.
Very Helpful!.......2001-05-25
This book gave me invaluable advice regarding my finances. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! I have adopted many strategies in the book to save for a rainy day. Thank you, and when are you coming out with another edition?
The Complete Idiots Guide to Managing Your Money.......2001-05-25
This book did a great job of explaining to the average person how to save, invest and avoid the common financial pitfalls we so often make. It was done with humor and wit, which is a breath of fresh air in this often hard to understand, jargon loaded industry. This book is beneficial to anyone who has thought about developing a financial plan but does not know how or where to begin. It is an easy read, fun and should be a required reading for the masses of people buried in credit card debt! Great job!!
Highly Recommended for Everyone.......2001-05-25
Anyone can easily understand and make a decision about their personal financial future, and also what the best approach for getting out of debt. Good analogies-

bad reproductions.......2007-05-05
the reproductions are low contrast and not very nice -- i'd rather have photocopies! will look for a better copy...
Photos were not the quality I thought they'd be........2006-03-11
I was expecting crispy photos of professional quality with good levels of contrast to define edges, variation, etc. of the forms photographed. Instead most of the photos were somewhat blurry and of low-contrast, mostly grays, leaving depth to be inferred and not readable. I admit that I'm disappointed.
An inspirational "must have" for metalsmiths and artists!.......2000-04-01
Karl Blossfeldt's imagery conjures up strange imaginary worlds. An absolute must have for artists searching out unusual organic forms as inspiration. Straight forward full frame B and W shots make photo copying or scanning a breeze. Gaudi, and Ernst along with the Brothers Quay come to mind.
Book Description
From the authoritative author on reptile and amphibian care comes this revised and updated version of The Leopard Gecko Manual. Philippe de Vosjoli provides the essential information for selecting leopard geckos, designing vivaria, and general care, including feeding and breeding. He even includes other gecko species and compatible reptiles and amphibians.
Customer Reviews:
Good recent information on the Leopard Gecko.......2007-01-20
The leopard gecko is a fascinating little animal. We've immensely enjoyed "B.J." in our home, and this book has lots of good information on all aspects of providing the proper environment, healthcare, and diet for your pet. Pay special information to the information on longevity, though. Unlike other reptiles such as the anole, leopard geckos have long life spans. The longest lived male in captivity is 29 and the longest lived female is 21. Females, in general, live considerably shorter life spans than males, but they still have typical lifespans longer than that of the domesticated cat. Many people buy a leopard gecko for their child expecting that the reptile will live only two or three years, then get rid of the animal when they realize their error and the length of the commitment involved.
As for the details of the book, it thoroughly explains sexing and selection of a good specimen for those who have not purchased a gecko yet. The section on housing your gecko shows you how to construct a naturalistic vivarium. If you are interested in breeding geckos, there is information on that subject plus the research of Dr. Brian Viets on temperature sex determination and coloration in case you want to specify those aspects of the geckos you breed. Also for you breeders, there are thorough instructions on the set-up and calibration of a home-made incubator. Roger Klingenberg, DVM, covers the diseases of the leopard gecko and their treatment in one dedicated chapter. Ron Tremper has a chapter on color and pattern variation illustrated primarily by photos of his own geckos. Tremper has developed much of what is now known about so-called "designer" leopard geckos. There is a nice section at the end of the book on other interesting geckos such as the Arizona Banded, the Texas Banded, the Central American Banded, the African Clawed, the Japanese Leopard, and the Malaysian Cat Geckos. There are plenty of eye-catching photos spread throughout the book.
This book may have more information than you need if you are a "casual" leopard gecko owner, but that is better than having insufficient information.
All you need to start leopard gecko ownership........2005-11-05
If you are a beginner owner like myself, then this book is all you need to get started and become experienced. All necessary topics are covered and there are numerous contributors to this books chapters which makes it an excellent and diverse read. I have not read other leopard gecko books but see little point at this time. Hard to go wrong with this.
Best leopard gecko book yet.......2005-07-17
The top gecko people in the country collaborated to write this book, and the information is extensive, but simple to understand. It goes beyond the beginner's how to set up a tank and feeding, and gets into breeding for different colors and all the different 'morphs' that have been created so far, with many good pictures. It is the most up-to-date so far in terms of new morphs (colors). After reading it the first time, I like to keep looking through it just for the pictures and to re-read the information on genetics 101. Besides being great little pets who will sit on your shoulder, Leopard Geckos are a popular classroom tool for teaching genetics at high school and college level, and I recommend this book for teachers and students. Most other Gecko books you pick up at the Pet Shop are not worth keeping.
BTW- Co-author and top breeder Ron Tremper is coming out with a more in-depth book soon (Summer 2005) for advanced breeding information and ideas. It will be the first of this type written on Leopard Geckos.
Book Description
Due to the recent popularity of Leopard Geckos, The Leopard Gecko Manual is a must have for all readers who either have or are considering purchasing a leopard gecko. The Leopard Geckos has become popular simply because they are one of the hardiest of all lizard species, easy to keep, easy to breed and potentially long-lived. They are also convenient in size, neither too small to be appreciated and handled, nor so large that it presents risks or requires enclosures not readily integrated into the average household. The leopard gecko is also undeniably beautiful, from the near velvet texture of the skin to the gold eyes and pastel shades of color. Simply said, the leopard gecko is one of finest pets you could own.
This book features information that is invaluable for all levels of leopard gecko hobbyists from the beginner to the advanced breeder looking for the most current, accurate and reliable information. It contains detailed information and acute observations by such authorities as the award winning author Philippe de Vosjoli, Brian E. Viets, Ph.D. on the effects of incubation temperature on hatchling sex and pigmentation, Ron Tremper on Color and pattern variations, and Roger Klingenberg, DVM on the recognition and treatment of disease in leopard geckos.
The Leopard Gecko Manual is an absolute must for all leopard gecko owners and breeders.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2006-08-24
It's really outdated. Since it was written, there have been many more studies done on reptile husbandry. It says calcium sand is THE substrate to use and it's one of the worst ones. BEFORE you get the animal I suggest joining reptile forums, as most reptile breeders/books are also outdated on care. Leopard geckos make wonderful pets, if cared for properly can live a long time also.
The Leopard Gecko Manual.......2005-12-23
This is a great book.I got my leopard gecko yesterday (12/21/05)
and this book helped me alot on care, feeding ect. and on making the desision to get one.
Cool Book.......2003-07-03
this is a great book it tells you allot about leopard geckos I could have done without the part about the african fat tail gecko but it is a good read buy now
The essential guide to owning Leopard Geckos........2002-11-06
In terms of printed text on Leopard Geckos, this book sets the standard. The information is brief and comprehensive. It's a must own for Leo keepers. I spend a lot of my time giving advice to people about these guys and the first thing I always tell new owners is: Get the Leopard Gecko Manual, read it cover to cover.
The Leopard Gecko Manual.......2001-08-13
This is a very informative book and should be required reading prior to purchasing a gecko. The authors have covered topics on: selecton, housing, feeding, breeding & raising geckos, and problems and diseases that an owner may encounter. The gecko photographs in this book are excellent. If you only read one book on this subject this would be your best overall choice.

Martin Luther King: a great man of great achievements.......2001-03-08
Harry Harmer achieves a great deal in a short space, covering the life of Martin Luther King largely by headline and the well known events of the day. The reading style of the narrator is very acceptable but not up to the standard of a professional actor. Harmer's style is factual and concise, and gives a coherent overview and analysis of King's driving religous philosophy and practical politics. Much background detail and human interest element is necessarily ommitted, but the overall effect is brisk and not too dry. King's one-line critique of Marxism is quoted to great effect. Harmer shows that King acheived the near-impossible - a radical, and radically effective, moderate political position which harnessed wide support and led to massive lasting social change for good. The proof of his rightness is strangely most evident in the opposition that King received. Neither the extreme Black Power groups who advocated violence, or the spineless wet appeasers who protested that he should temper his words and stick to preaching, came near to harnessing the lasting, positive, and effectual driving force for social justice that King did. Harmer maintains considerable objectivity throughout, and that in an area that arouses violent passion and debate to this day. He is not afraid to tackle the actions of the iniquitous vested interests of the day, for instance the role of the FBI, top politicians, and powerful white businessmen. This is a highly commendable introduction to the life and works of Martin Luther King.
