Rick Steves, author of 21 guidebooks and host of the television series Travels in Europe with Rick Steves, has spent 100 days a year traveling Europe, every year, since 1973. If any American knows Paris, he does, and his self-imposed mission is to make the city just as accessible to those of us who don't have the good fortune to spend months there at a time.
In his amiable, informed, and ruthlessly candid way, Steves focuses on the best--including nice places to stay and eat that give lots in the way of character and take relatively little in the way of francs. He suggests walking tours, museums, and itineraries that include both famous landmarks and little-known finds. He knows it all: art galleries and crêpe stands, street cafés and romantic neighborhoods, activities for kids, and great places to shop. Most importantly, he knows how Parisians live, and his guide provides the best information to let you experience not just the sights of Paris, but Parisian life as well. --Stephanie Gold

My favorite guide books!.......2007-05-25
Rick Steves writes my favorites guidebooks, no matter where I'm going. His books are laid out in an easy way to find things, and I like how he lays out some great walks to take in the city. I read other books to get tips, but Rick's books are the ones that I actually take in my suitcase, to reference while I'm there.
Rick Steves books are the best.......2007-04-07
I love the way Rick Steves looks at the world and his philosophy of travel. I have his Paris and Provence books, which are extremely useful and helpful. I wish he had one for Greece!
Best guide for a first time visitor!.......2007-01-09
My husband and I went to Paris in October and without Rick Steves we would not have gotten nearly as much out of the trip. His guide gave us some great ideas for walking tours, tips on when to visit certain sites and overall help on making the most of the trip. We were first timers to Paris, but I will use this guide for any future trips - it is full of great information. Highly recommended!!
Great Service!.......2007-01-07
Received this book before I received my Amazon order that I ordered at the same time.
Great travel guide.......2006-11-11
I bought this travel guide to find some of the less obvious attractions in Paris. Not only did I find those, but I also
found some wonderful tips for places I already knew. Information about trains,
special hours, etc, were extremely helpful. It was like having a local give you tips on the
city. The only thing I thought could be improved was that the guide does not
give much information on upscale hotels and restaurants, so if you want to splurge, you need to check out
another guide book.

Good but not great.......2007-02-08
I felt that Rick's Provence and the French Riviera guide has some of the essentials but not the inspired coverage of his other books. There isn't the excitement that he presents in his Italian and other European guides. The coverage of the hill towns of Provence is somewhat perfunctory.
Rick Steve's Provence and the Riviera.......2007-01-31
Great resource book. Tons of information that is well researched.
Rick Steves' Provence and the French Riviera 2005.......2007-01-04
One must have this book if they are touring Provence. Makes it liveable and lovely
Good planning book.......2005-10-25
I have a wonderful time using this book to plan my visit, although I would still recomend getting a few more reference document such as local map to accomondate this book.
Fine for planning your itinerary I suppose.......2005-08-18
As far as information goes, this book deserves 5 stars ... it's great for figuring out how to get around, what to see (and what not to see!), and how much money to bring. However, I couldn't give 5 stars, simply because I was hoping for better maps and maybe a few color photographs. The book has crudely drawn maps -- almost with a cartoonish look about them -- that don't seem all that helpful. And as for photos, well, the one on the cover is about it. This is a great book to have when planning your trip to Provence ... however, I would advise supporting it with a 2nd guidebook that touts glossy pages with color pictures and maps!

Customer Reviews:
The best guide out there (only one caveat).......2006-11-03
What I like about Rick Steves guides is that, unlike his competitors, they are filled with personal observations with clear recommendations of what to see and experience. The writing is more personal and not clinical as with the other guidebooks. My wife & I recently traveled to Europe (London, Paris & Rome) and Rick Steves books were the only guides we used or needed for the entire trip!
Four clear advantages:
1. Rick points out exactly what neighborhoods to stay in - this is huge, because the choice of location can make or break your stay especially when you are on a tight timeline. E.g. Rick suggests staying in the Rue Cler neighborhood in Paris - and it was the perfect location - easy access to the metro, most sights within walking distance, and just an all-round charming neighborhood!
2. Points of interest are grouped together - this really helped us put together our itineraries well before we got to Paris, and it worked like a charm.
3. Tour guides recommended - unlike other guide books Rick is not shy about recommending good tour guides. This is very important for people to get the most out of a visit to a foreign land. it's tough to read everything about a new place AND remember it at appropriate times. So a good tour guide can make a huge difference in helping you get the most of out of a visit. We used them in Europe and it made a HUGE difference. The guides recommended are top notch and we felt we got every penny's worth!
4. Getting around - superbly written instructions on using the Paris metro. We were instantly at home with the metro. Good suggestions like buying a 'carnet' of tickets made using the metro a pleasure. Also, every point of interest has a clear suggestion of how to get there - can it get any easier!
So why the 4 stars and not 5? I think Rick is a little off in his recommendations for hotels to stay in. For example, he recommends Hotel MOtte-Picquet in Paris - and we fell for it. It was horrible. Don't believe me? Just take a look at the TripAdvisor.com feedback and see for yourself!! Rick should focus a little more on comfort of travellers from the US (like us) than just providing a cheap place to stay - the savings are just not worth it.
Overall - a great buy and a book (and series) that I highly recommend.
Go with Rick!.......2006-09-05
If I could bring only two guides to France with me this year, one of them would certainly be Rick Steves' France 2006. the other would be a very good street map of Paris, where I'll be staying most of the time. Rick's reviews are excellent, giving specifics and details without going overboard on flowery, vague descriptions.
Rick Steve's France - 2006.......2006-03-22
We used this book on a recent trip to Normandy. The hotel ratings were very good & helped us determine if that was where we wanted to stay. He doesn't mention whether or not a particular placed is closed during the winter & we did find one of our hotels was closed, but the ones open were exactly as he described. The book was most helpful in our decisions as to what we wanted to see & do. I would recommend this for anyone making a trip to France. Be sure & get the latest edition, as things due change.

Book Description
This clear and lucid primer fills an important need by providing a comprehensive account of the many new developments in the study of metaphor over the last twenty years and their impact on our understanding of language, culture, and the mind. Beginning with Lakoff and Johnson's seminal work in Metaphors We Live By, Kovecses outlines the development of "the cognitive linguistic theory of metaphor" by explaining key ideas on metaphor. He also explores primary metaphor, metaphor systems, the "invariance principle," mental-imagery experiments, the many-space blending theory, and the role of image schemas in metaphorical thought. He examines the applicability of these ideas to numerous related fields.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough, within its limits.......2006-03-15
The preface of this book says it's about "what has happened in the past two decades in the cognitive linguistic study of metaphor." I hadn't read a book on the subject of metaphor since 1978, so the precision of that comment went totally over my head. I'm writing this review so that the same doesn't happen to you.
The cognitive linguistic (CL) approach to metaphor is based on the work of Lakoff and Johnson (with whom the author of this book has worked, and to whom he dedicates the book). It emphasizes the conceptual, rather than merely linguistic, character of metaphor. It regards metaphor as a "mapping" from a "source (conceptual) domain" to a "target domain". So a statement like "I defended my argument" can be explained by a conceptual metaphor ARGUMENT IS WAR, where "argument" is the target and "war" is the source. The same mapping also underlies many other expressions (e.g., "He won the argument"). Using one concept to explain many expressions (and even non-linguistic instantiations) is supposed to be a special benefit of the CL approach.
The book seems to be a very comprehensive exposition of the CL theory of metaphor. Metonymy is also discussed quite thoroughly. There are exercises after each chapter, together with a complete answer key. But that's as far as it goes. The CL theory is one theory of metaphor among several, and you won't learn anything about any of the others (other than a bit about "blending") from this book.
Some of book's aplications of the CL approach were pretty neat, including the discussions of complex abstract systems (Ch. 10), pedagogical applications (Ch. 14) and historical semantics and grammar (Ch. 15). But it's hard to tell from this book whether the theory really has the "scientific" quality to which it seems to aspire (as evidenced by, among other things, its mathematical-sounding jargon: "domains", "mappings" etc.)
In particular: The book names hundreds of conceptual metaphors, as if they have some objective existence. But it leaves a lot unexplained. How can you know that a particular conceptual metaphor is the correct one to invoke in a given case, to the exclusion of others or even just in preference to others? (BTW, the exercises often ask you to do just that.) When a name is given to a conceptual metaphor, does this mean that the source domain and its mapping to the target have been verified by historical research? Does the giving of a name suggest, as with the naming of species in modern biology, that some effort has gone into verifying that there really is a distinct species, with specific features that can be reproducibly distinguished? Or are the names more ad hoc, and bestowed according to individual taste (or the taste of Lakoff and his clique)?
The book never addresses such questions, but the author's attributions of conceptual metaphors provide some clue. They're often arbitrary or downright bizarre. For example, he cites "The sight filled them with joy," "She couldn't contain her joy any longer," and "I was bursting with happiness," as examples of HAPPINESS IS A FLUID IN A CONTAINER (p. 86). OK, fluids are plausible here, though couldn't one also be filled with solids? Next he mentions "I couldn't keep my happiness to myself," "She gave way to her feelings of happiness," "His feelings of joy broke loose," and "He couldn't hold back tears of joy," as examples of HAPPINESS IS A CAPTIVE ANIMAL (id.). Where is the necessity of invoking a captive animal to explain these? Fluids could do just as well for most of them. Moreover, since we're told (at p. 16) that the "central idea" of the CL school is that the human body is the most important source of conceptual metaphors, excretion seems at least as appropriate a source for these metaphors as a captive animal. However, the author doesn't offer any justification for invoking the captive animal concept over any competing alternatives -- in fact, he doesn't mention any alternatives at all.
Such examples left me with the feeling that the CL theory is just as subjective as literary criticism and other traditional approaches to metaphor, but with an added layer of scientific pretension. That doesn't mean it can't produce occasional insights, but the pretension is irritating -- and misleading. Rather than having the relative rigor found in some branches of linguistics, CL theory of metaphor seems like just a lot of hand-waving (and a bit too much deference to Lakoff & Johnson). I'm not qualified to determine whether this is more a reflection of the theory per se or of the book's exposition of it, but it's disappointing in either case.

Customer Reviews:
Good for a quick reference........2007-02-13
I didn't find anything in this book that I couldn't find on the web, but the advantage of owning it is that it is all in one place and can be used for a quick reference.
I have two adolescent cats that urinated repeatedly on a bed and in the corner of the dining room. In November I dropped them off at the Animal Protective League on a Friday afternoon and told the truth as to why I was leaving them. On Saturday I read the receipt they gave me and saw separate charges for each cat for 1) Euthanasia; and 2) Cremation. By Sunday evening I was sick and quite depressed. All I could see was one of them (named Jewel) looking right at me meowing with a scared look in her face as they were taking her away.
On Monday I called and was able to get them back on Wednesday sans gonads. Using this book and other information from their vet and the web I devised a five week program of re-education for my friends consisting of:
1) Changing litter brands; 2) Moving the litter boxes to a more convenient location; 3) Confining them to the basement with their food and litter when I wasn't at home; 4) Thoroughly treating the spots where they (both of them!) were urinating; 5) Playing with and feeding them both at these same spots; 6) Gradually allowing them more time to freely roam the house.
I graduated them both the first week in January by giving them complete ownership of the house and here it is mid February and there have been NO violations. They sleep on the bed and pretty much ignore the area in the dining room where they used to urinate.
I really could not have lived with myself had I not at least tried to work with them before opting for the the last resort - euthanasia. I now have two friends that share their house with me and provide me with good companionship and a lot of laughs.
Not just your average cat book!.......2005-03-06
This book is easy to read and full of useful advice that I haven't found anywhere else! The book tells you how to solve your cat's behavioral problems by getting to the root of the problem. I love my cat and I love this book!
This book is the cat's meow!.......2005-03-06
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very helpful. There was a lot of good, practical advice. Book gave me insight to my cat's behavior - he's pretty good at this stage - but I understand him even better now!! Thanks, Shirlee!

Customer Reviews:
Never leaves my nightstand!.......2007-03-25
First, The artists in this book are of considerable note and respect beyond the fairly limited, tendy and often cash-driven art world of the US.
Second, it is neither an DIY nor an Italophile book.
This is a sumptuous book of inspiration for gardens and work. It is the extension to the creative self into the spaces beyond a defined artistic space. Suddenly the garden is bursting with opportunity for expressive recombining of materials to surprise and delight. The images invite you to think of the fallen branches, the rusty hinges, the shoody, eroding bricks in a new way. They then metaphorocally challenge one to throw those drab and safe curb appeal books to the wind, follow your intuition and create your own world within this one.
I adore this book. If it is not next to me when I sleep, it is with me in my studio... within it's own creative carden.
Tuscany Artist Gardens.......2006-02-17
Great photography. Great as a coffee table book, but not so great for detailed information on garden elements(plants, pottery...)shown in the photos along with scupltures.
It lacked the details I was looking for as a professional landscape designer.
A Terrific Picture Book, Light on Content.......2005-12-22
If you are thinking that TUSCANY ARTISTS GARDENS will provide a lot of insights into how artists create gardens, then this book will not satisfy. If, however, you are looking for a peek into some beautiful gardens in magical Tuscany with some interesting conversations with basically unknown artists who happen to live in Tuscany, then this wonderfully illustrated portfolio will provide ideas and treasures of Italian gardening.
Mariella Sgaravatti visited and interviewed thirty artists who have taken up residence in Tuscany, converted some wonderful old houses, and have created garden spaces for inspiration and reflections. The gardens range from grand to intimate and most incorporate some artwork in the garden itself. Most people know that the majority of artists' studios are places not to inspire anyone but the painter or sculptor, but seeing their homes and gardens is a different matter. While this book will not provide much in the way of artists' lives, it does share some parts of beautiful Tuscany that otherwise might not be available to the traveler. Grady Harp, December 05

Book Description
Black women have a long history of collective struggle to create welfare organizations, schools, orphanages, and health centers for African Americans. Their clubs evolved for many reasons, including self-education, community improvement, and to raise the standards of black women. Many of these women, educated beyond their race and gender and with a commitment to their communities, turned to volunteer work. This book examines the volunteer efforts of black clubwomen in the National Association of Colored Women from 1896 to 1936, and explores how their work influenced the impact and direction of social services in black communities, especially during the Progressive era. The innovative role black clubwomen played at this time aided the African American community in both social change and community survival. A variety of factors motivated black women to organize club associations, including the urgent social needs of poor African Americans who were excluded from all public relief, an increasing number of educated middle-class black women, and the growth of urban black communities due to migration from the South. The pioneer clubwomen of this time period established successful social service programs and agencies, and laid the foundation for opportunities and assistance in education, political and religious leadership, and social service within the African American community. Social services established by the clubwomen, such as travelers' aid, job training and placement, settlement houses, child and family welfare services, and preventive health care services, provided the foundation for the Urban League and the emergence of professional black social workers. The first black school of social work, the Atlanta School of Social Work, was a direct outgrowth of the activities of the Neighborhood Union Settlement.
