Basic pronunciation and listening comprehension in North American English. Clear Speech from the Start concentrates on features that will have the most significant impact on a student's ability to understand and communicate with others. These features include rhythm, stress, intonation, and speech sounds that carry specific grammatical meaning, such as the plural “s” and the past tense “ed” endings. Most Innovative Illustrative Technique.......2005-04-30
Now, I've seen some pretty innovative approaches to illustrating pronunciation. But this takes the prize so far.
From the author's letter to teachers:
"For years, teachers have been asking me to write a version of my intermediate level book, Clear Speech, that would be usable for beginners. They said that it would make more sense to help students with pronunciation early, rather than wait until they have developed habits that are hard to overcome. Also, teachers often found that their beginning students became discouraged when people didn't understand what they were saying, and of course, a discouraged student is harder to teach. Teachers who were trying to help their beginning students with pronunciation expressed frustration with the limited results they were getting from traditional methods of drilling minimal pair (e.g., ship/sheep) or asking students to "sound out" the letters in print. [ e.g. "Do you want to go to the store? / Doo yoo wahnt too goh too thuh stor?" ] They were asking for a more effective approach.
All of this made sense to me. But the problems was that I just couldn't think of an approach that would work. For one thing, beginners simply don't have enough vocabulary to understand explanations. And with so much else to learn, there isn't much class time for pronunciation. One thing was clear to me: A really useful book had to be radically different from any other in the field, including my own intermediate level book."

Now ESL beginners can build clear pronunciation!.......2001-04-28
Conventional wisdom in the ESL/EFL world holds that pronunciation should not be taught at the beginning level. It's just too technical, requiring complicated descriptions and explanations for which beginning students don't have the vocabulary.
But if there were a way to make the material accessible? Even beginners need to communicate clearly -- intelligible speech fosters successful academic, work, and social interactions, and that's got to be encouraging for the student! Judy Gilbert's well-planned approach makes clear pronunciation truly accessible to beginners. The book -- rightly so -- limits the pronunciation points to those that are most urgently needed for intelligibility. The principle areas covered are: (1) the alphabet: using letters to spell out loud for clarification, (2) decoding spelling/reading words: using simple spelling rules to predict the pronunciation of a word, (3) syllable number: developing awareness of the number of syllables in words and phrases, being sure not to add unnecessary syllables or to omit necessary ones, (4) syllable stress: lengthening stressed vowels and reducing unstressed ones, (5) word connections: linking words together (this improves both listening comprehension and the smoothness of the student's speech), (6) the music of English: the pitch contours and rhythm of the language, and (7) articulation: t/d, s/z, l/r/n, and th.
There are some very cool things in this book for pronunciation teachers and learners. For example, there are tongue shape drawings looking from the back of the tongue to the front and out the mouth. Can't picture it? You'll have to see it to believe it! Along with the traditional front and side views, this new perspective really helps you visualize what's going on inside your mouth to produce a specific sound. I only wish there were drawings for all the American English vowels and consonants!! (But then it wouldn't be a beginning textbook, would it?)
I also like the vowel pronunciation rules. Example: the letters 'ai' are pronounced like the first letter [a] in the combination. Think: straight, complaint. Then, in the appendix, a percentage is given for how often the rule works, in this case, 95% of the time. This will give the student the confidence to guess how a new word is pronounced, take 'restraint', for example, but not stress out when the rule doesn't work, as in 'plaid'.
There are many helpful graphics in the book. Two of my favorites are the extra-wide bolded letters for stressed vowels (I think you can visualize that) and the diminishing letters for continuant sounds (Thatsssokay. The storezzznearrrMain [the second and third s's, z's, and r's have decreasing font sizes]).
I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. Mostly, I do corporate accent and pronunciation training and executive speech coaching with foreign-born clients who have a high intermediate to advanced command of English. But occasionally, I am asked to train employees who have a lower level of English. This is definitely the book I'll choose for them! Trainees can apply the basic concepts they learn to company-specific vocabulary and technical terms.
I only wish all learners of North American English could start out with this book...

Comparison with "Pets on the Go".......2002-06-15
I bought this book and "Pets on the Go" both at Amazon.com. First I visited petswelcome.com's web site and thoroughly checked it out, looking for completeness by checking their site for motels/hotels that I know accept pets. Some places that I knew of were missing in popular tourist sites where people bring pets. I found their website very large (almost too large) for efficient surfing and for fast note taking/printing out. So I bought the book instead. Well, the book writing is "cutsy" to the point of being corny. That aside, comparing it with "PETS ON THE GO" (which I also bought), "PETS ON THE GO" wins hands down. The latter has more organization, more entries, more detail in the entries, and more current information. For example, checking "Lone Pine, CA" (a popular tourist town for Mt. Whitney climbers), one finds only one scant entry in "Petswelcome.com", whereas in "PETS ON THE GO" there are four entries, plus "PETS ON THE GO" gives you the motels' URL's! "PETSWELCOME.COM" does not give the URL's. (Go figure----they're a dotcom company!). Libby Montana has no listings in "PETS WELCOME.COM" whereas "PETS ON THE GO" has four. This happens over and over. "PETS ON THE GO" is twice as fat as the other book and it is organized alphabetically by State, City (in boldface). "PETSWELCOME.COM" was frustrating for me for fast, efficient use because the first boldface entry is not the city (rather the motel---which is not alphabetized!) and you have to squint to find the city in the listings. A pain! Of the two books I would get "PETS ON THE GO" (I rated it 5 stars for fast and thorough, complete information). I would be tempted to throw the other out the car window! One just gets the feeling of dotcom generic phoniness when reading "PETSWELCOME.COM". I feel like this book is like a maze-designed building with every other brick missing. I'm a dog person on the go with four dogs (one traveller) and numerous other pets and I have no involvement with the book. I hope this helps folks that are organized and ergonomics-minded like me.

The Portable Petswelcome.com book was a terrific gift for me and for our favorite Golden. The book's light breezy style made for easy reading of really useful stuff including how and where to find a vet when we're all on vacation. I've now recommended Portable Petswelcome to Arthur and JoAnn for their a new Golden Retriever so they can have the benefit of its complete and authoritative advice. You can tell that the people who wrote this Petswelcome really love their animals, and know what they are talking about.

The portable petswelcome.com book has been a tremendous resource for me and my pets. It's approach and completeness certainly surpasses any others on the market today. I also enjoy the insight and great sense of humor from the writers. The best part is that the book is also supported by their dynamic website which is constantly updated with new information. I would definetly recommend this book (or the website) to anyone who would like to travel with their pets, enjoyably and without restrictions.
A life saver (and enjoyable to read).......2002-02-06
Tired of sneaking my dog around the back of motels and hoping no one sees me, I came across this book and the related website. The listings seem up-to-date and comprehensive. The website is great to stay on top of changes to phone numbers, etc.
Surprisingly, I found myself chuckling as I read through the book. Not just a typical directory, the hints, tips and anecdotes make it an enjoyable read. You can tell the authors are pet lovers and not just guide book authors. Anyone who travels with pets should keep a copy in their glove compartment. Once you start using this book, you'll find that you can actually check in during daylight hours :)

The cover looks nice on this book and the vet listings were helpful but I found the lodging entries sparse and outdated compared to other online sources like Takeyourpet.com

This is a pleasant book to browse through. Mr. Husfloen uses his knowledge of antiques and collectibles to adivse his readers about the value of items that they own. The information is presented in a question and answer format with an accompanying photograph of the object in question. You can pick up the book at any chapter, read several entries and put it away for another day.

Book Description
Woman of Color/Woman of Substance is a book about BI-polarization which is also known as Manic-Depression, which are forms of mental illness. A lot of highly professional people have been diagnosed with these quite unique mental illnesses. There has been extensive progress made towards help in the psychiatric profession for the people who know they have suffered throughout their entire adult lives, but did the best they could to get by on what little comfort was given by loved ones who were totally overwhelmed by the BI-polar suffering family member. I hope that the readers of Woman of Color/Woman of Substance will be able to appreciate my writing some very painful memories.
