5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and well written..........2000-09-18

Nick Greaves wrote and took all the pictures for this beautiful book. It depicts not only elephants, but other animals as well. It clearly explains about the wildlife in the park and goes further to explain the hard issues - culling (killing) elephants, ivory trade, and funding of the park. This is a book that will both look as good on your coffee table and is a pleasure to read. As a Zimbabwe guide in Hwange, Nick Greaves knows his elephants and this comes through clearly in the book. Highly recommended!

    Book Description

    -- Contemporary Literature

Desire in Language traces the path of an investigation, extending over a period of ten years, into the semiotics of literature and the arts. But the essays of Julia Kristeva in this volume, though they often deal with literature and art, do not amount to either "literary criticism" or "art criticism." Their concern, writes Kristeva, "remains intratheoretical: they are based on art and literature in order to subvert the very theoretical, philosophical, or semiological apparatus."

Probing beyond the discoveries of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Roman Jakobson and others, Julia Kristeva proposes and tests theories centered on the nature and development of the novel, and on what she has defined as a signifying practice in poetic language and pictural works. Desire in Language fully shows what Roman Jakobson has called Kristeva's "genuine gift of questioning generally adopted 'axioms,' and her contrary gift of releasing various 'damned questions' from their traditional question marks."

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Lacan and Freud: Language and Psychoanalysis.......2000-11-06

In this book Kristeva takes on the issues of language and psychoanalysis, expanding upon Lacan's views on desire and language. (Lacan said: All speech is demand, the demand for love). Kristeva is considered a genius in her field, and highly respected in France (where all this work goes on nowadays). Here she is presented in translation so that the English-reading world can enjoy her work.

The interest in such theories of language, semiotics, post-structuralism and psychoanalysis is slim in the English speaking world, and this is unfortunate. Not enough scholars of language look to Lacan and Kristeva, but they should. The text is difficult, and even more so in translation, but it is worth struggling through. However, for the reader with little background in the subject matter, penetrating Kristeva's work may be almost impossible without guidance.

This book is subtitled 'a semiotic approach to literature and art'. What Kristeva does is apply her theories to the area of aesthetics, especially her specialty area of the novel. Unfortunately, her studies are naturally based on the French novel (19th century), so readers unfamiliar with novellists such as Mallarme might have a problem following this aspect of her work.

I was looking for copyright free art for a publication I was working on for a client...Dover never lets me down!

The assortment of styles and topics in this edition is great. It will serve me well in future projects as well as the one I purchased it for!

The ease of these newer editions with the CD-ROM's makes my job so much more enjoyable.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice, easy-to-use collection of copyright-free clip art........2004-07-27

If you're looking for a selection of copyright-free clip art borders to use for websites, posters, flyers, or other projects, this is a nice collection. There are four versions of each image - one for each corner. The images included represent a variety of themes, including floral designs, ribbons, swirls, geometric patterns, Christmas, patriotic designs, stars, southwestern designs, and more. There are 200 black-and-white images in total, useable with either Windows or Macintosh. The graphics are all quite large on the CD-ROM, so you can re-size them in any graphics program to whatever dimensions you need. They are all available in GIF, JPG, BMP, PICT, TIF, and WMF formats, saved at 600 DPI. The book itself contains a preview of every image, each accompanied by the image number, so you can easily find the one you want on the CD-ROM. The CD fits into a plastic sleeve on the inside back cover of the book for safekeeping. I have used clip art from this and other Dover Clip Art books on numerous occasions, and have been quite happy with it.

Titles in the Let's Take Care of ... color-illustrated series introduce younger boys and girls to the fun and responsibility of pet ownership. Each book tells the story of a boy and girl who get a pet and learn how to care for it. These charming books emphasize that acquiring a pet is an exciting adventure for children, and it often makes little difference whether the new pet is as tiny as a frog or as large as a hound. Kids who read these books will share the excitement of the stories' children as an introduction to getting a pet of their own. A Guidelines section supplements each story with advice and information on pet care that is geared to children's capabilities. Parents and kids will want to read that section together.

4 out of 5 stars New Life for the Done to Death.......2002-02-18

My good review of "Mustang-- America's Favorite Pony Car" may come as a surprise to people how know me. Even for people like me who love old American cars, Mustangs are one of those subjects that's been done to death, along with '55-'57 Chevys, Thunderbirds, and streetrods. I really didn't want to see yet another book on Mustangs, but I found myself unable to put this one down. This is not just another Mustang pep rally. For the first time in years, I found myself learing something about Mustangs. I've seen many California Specials, but I never knew the details of Mustang's High Country Special for 1968 or the evolution of Steve Saleen's amazing post-muscle-era custom performers. Like many, I had passed off the 1970's Pinto-based Mustang IIs as laughable relics of the bad old days, but more than any other chapter, the Mustang II story fascinated me with new and interesting material. For any Mustang enthusiast who's tired of the same old "aren't they wonderful" thing, this book will be a real joy with some subtle humor along the way. Apparently, terrified children were a Mustang option for 1967.

              4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-06-08

I really like this book, though I was a little disappointed there weren't more native plants. She does specifically call out the natives, though. She gives clear, concise advice on when and where to plant, plus care and maintanance. My only other disappointment was the two to three times yearly mulching, fertilizing, and composting she recommends - I know some plants need it, but going native is supposed to make things easy!

Overall, a great book, and a definite plus to anyone with a garden in Alabama.

              4 out of 5 stars Very fabulous!.......2004-06-07

I was so happy that several friends recommended this book! It was so nice to have someone knowledgeable about the peculiarities of gardening in Alabama tell her secrets. There is lots of valuable information in here. I use it constantly in tandem with my Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening book.

                      Book Description

Philosopher, poet, critic of culture and literature, and best-selling novelist, George Santayana (1863-1952) stands as a major figure in American philosophy and literature. This new edition of his autobiography restores passages that were deleted in the original book because of the publisher's sensitivities about lawsuits, printing and production convenience, a general desire by editors to "soften" some of his remarks, and his own request that portions be published only after his death.

Santayana's marginal notes, idiosyncratic punctuation, and use of British spelling, reveal a stubbornly aloof and scrupulously remote observer. The eloquence of this detachment is fully brought forth in the rich language and smoothly ironic recollections of Persons and Places.

William G. Holzberger is Professor of English at Bucknell University. Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr. is Professor and Head, Department of Philosophy and Humanities, Texas A&M University.

5 out of 5 stars The autobiography that defines the genre.......2006-01-02

This is the MIT Press' 1987 one-volume critical edition of "George" Santayana's autobiography. It includes much material not found in Scribner's original, 1940s, three-volume publication.

This RICHLY AND PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED MIT Press edition is THE ONE TO HAVE.

Although a major figure in American philosophy, writer of one of the finest novels set in America (The Last Puritan) and an aknowledged master of English prose, Jorge Ruíz de Santayana (1863-1952) was born in Ávila, Spain, of Spanish parents and retained his Spanish nationality until his dying day, never becoming an American citizen.

He wound up in Boston because his mother's first husband, the captain of a yankee clipper, was a Sturgis from Cod city. They met and married in the Philippines, then a Spanish colony. After this brief marriage, which produced 3 Sturgis children, including the only person Santayana ever truly loved, his half-sister Susana Sturgis, the widowed Mrs Sturgis married Santayana's father, an elderly Spanish colonial official. They soon separated and at age 6 little Jorge, who could hardly be brought up in Ávila by his old father alone, was sent to his mother, who had taken up residence in Boston with her first husband's well-off relatives.

While outwardly a successful émigré student, Santayana nursed deep anger against his mother (her portrait in these mémoires is devastating) and never forgave the slight done to his father, whose austere Castilian livelihood had not been able to compete with those Yankee greenbacks.

Santayana studied at Harvard and in Germany and was aknowledged to be so brilliant he was offered a teaching post at Harvard when hardly out of graduate school. But the powers-that-be there never liked him, or he them. His haughty, very "foreign" outward appeareance, all dressed in black like a Castilian; his cold sardonic humour; his atheism; his paradoxical love for the Catholic esthetic; his political conservatism; his homosexuality: all these were inimical to the worthy Brahmins who ran the University.

On his side, he despised their sentimental, smug progressivism; their senseless liberal religiosity; their childish moral earnesteness--all concealing a brutal sense of entitlement and power.

Santayana's successive promotions to eventual full-professorship were systematically delayed, notwithstanding his being one of the most celebrated members of the faculty. Once the crown was conferred upon him, though, he threw it in their faces, resigning his professorship in 1912. The proud Eternal Outsider moved to Europe (England, Spain, Italy) were he lived the remaining 40 years of his life. He never set foot in the US again.

This autobiography is one of the most fascinating such documents ever created. All people depicted are unforgettably etched in acid, with a calm Pascalian insight into their souls that is almost terrifying. Santayana was a profound skeptic of human sentiments, an austere, stoic Spanish Epicurean writing the richest Emersonian English. A thousand times more percipient than Tocqueville, Santayana's point of view, the magisterial clarity with which it is propounded, are indeed uniquely prepossessing: here was the last philosopher of antiquity, mysteriously issued forth from medieval Ávila to address, in English, the corny foibles of the American century...in lucid Lucretian periods.

One can scarcely conceive of another book quite like this.

4 out of 5 stars An important biography of a distinguished man.......2003-11-14

While the name George Santayana has popped up occasionally in the material that I have studied, I had never made an attempt to learn more about him. Therefore, before I read this book, the extent of my knowledge was the famous quote: "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." His life was one of enormous achievement, and like so many of the American intellectuals of the twentieth century, he was an immigrant who always felt a degree of discomfort in American society. This uneasiness finally led him to resign his position at Harvard and travel the world, writing and adventuring.
Written primarily for young adults, Carter gives a complete, albeit brief synopsis of the accomplishments of this incredible man. Primarily a philosopher, Santayana wrote in many other areas, including poetry and fiction. He was also a very modest man, never appearing to take himself too seriously. It is also noted, although largely in passing, that Santayana was a homosexual. That fact seems to have had no direct affect on his public life, hence there was no reason for Carter to spend a great deal of time on it.
Santayana did not possess a great deal of faith in democracy, and he spent the years of the Second World War in Italy. While he clearly supported Benito Mussolini, there is no evidence that his support was all that active. His position seems to have been one who simply wants a society to be ordered, there is no evidence that he ever spoke favorably of Nazism, and he was severely critical of the principles of Nazism in his writings.
One of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century, Santayana deserves to be studied more closely. I am currently searching for a more in-depth biography, and I can thank the author of this book for my development of that interest.

                          Book Description

Since the first selection of George Santayana's letters was published in 1955, shortly after his death, many more letters have been located. The Works of George Santayana, Volume V, brings together a total of 3,081 letters. The volume is divided chronologically into eight books of roughly comparable length. Book One covers the longest period of time, in effect spanning Santayana's correspondence from the 1880s through most of the first decade of the twentieth century. It illuminates Santayana's life from the age of nineteen until well into his middle years, when he had established his professional career as a full professor at Harvard.

In his introduction, William Holzberger summarizes their significance as follows: "We find in Santayana's letters not only a distillation of his philosophy but also a multitude of new perspectives on the published work. The responses to his correspondents are filled with spontaneous comments on and restatements of his fundamental philosophical ideas and principles. Because Santayana's philosophy was not for him a thing apart, but rather the foundation of his existence, the letters indicate the ways in which his entire life was permeated and directed by that philosophy."

                            Book Description

George Santayana published The Realm of Matter (1930) and The Genteel Tradition at Bay (1931). He continued work on Book Three of Realms of Being, The Realm of Truth, and on his novel, The Last Puritan. Citing his commitment to his writing and his intention to retire from academia, he declined offers from Harvard University for the Norton Chair of Poetry and for a position as William James Professor of Philosophy, as well as offers for positions at the New School for Social Research and Brown University. The deaths of his half sisters, Susan Sturgis de Sastre and Josephine Sturgis, in 1928 and 1930, respectively, were extremely distressing to him. Santayana and Charles Strong continued their epistolary debate over the nature and perception of reality and the problem of knowledge. The book also includes letters to Robert Bridges, Cyril Clemens, Morris R. Cohen, Curt John Ducasse, Sydney Hook, Horace Meyer Kallen, Walter Lippmann, Ralph Barton Perry, William Lyon Phelps, and Herbert W. Schneider. Santayana sent many letters with articles and reviews to journalists Wendell T. Bush, Henry Seidel Canby, Wilbur Cross, and John Middleton Murry. Discussion of his novel and continuing work on Realms of Being took place with Otto Kyllmann and John Hall Wheelock, his editors at Constable and Scribner's. Although Santayana now made the Hotel Bristol in Rome his permanent residence, he continued to travel in England, France, and Italy.

                              Book Description

This final volume of Santayana's letters spans the last five years of the philosopher's life. Despite the increasing infirmities of age and illness, Santayana continued to be remarkably productive during these years, working steadily until September 1952, when he died of stomach cancer, just three months short of his eighty-ninth birthday. Still living in the nursing home run by the "Blue Sisters" of the Little Company of Mary in Rome (now with such prewar luxuries as hot baths and central heating restored), Santayana completed his book Dominations and Powers, which had been more than fifty years in the making, the final part of his autobiography Persons and Places, published posthumously in 1953 as My Host the World, and the abridgment of his early five-part masterwork, The Life of Reason, into a single volume--all while continuing to maintain a voluminous correspondence with friends and admirers.

The eight books of The Letters of George Santayana bring together over 3,000 letters, many of which have been discovered in the fifty years since Santayana's death. Letters in Book Eight are written to such correspondents as the young American poet Robert Lowell (whom Santayana thinks of "only as a friend and not merely as a celebrity" and to whom he sends a wedding gift of $500); Ira D. Cardiff, the editor of Atoms of Thought, a collection of excerpts from Santayana's writings (which, Santayana complained, portrayed him as more akin to Tom Paine than Thomas Aquinas); Richard Colton Lyon, a young Texan who would later collect Santayana's writings about America in Santayana on America: Essays, Notes, and Letters on American Life, Literature, and Philosophy (1968); and the humanist philosopher Corliss Lamont.

                                Book Description

The eight books of The Letters of George Santayana bring together over 3,000 letters, many of which have been discovered in the fifty years since Santayana's death. This sixth book covers four years of Santayana's life in Rome, his permanent residence since the late 1920s. During these years, Santayana, in his seventies, saw the publication of the remaining nine volumes of the Triton Edition of his work as well as the last two books of his Realms of Being: The Realm of Truth and The Realm of Spirit. In 1938 the first book-length biography of Santayana was published, and in 1940 The Philosophy of George Santayana--a collection of critical essays that included Santayana's rejoinder, "Apologia pro Mente Sua"--was published as volume two of Northwestern University Press?s Library of Living Philosophers. In 1939, when war broke out in Europe and Swiss authorities denied him a long-term visa, Santayana decided to stay in Italy, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.

The letters in this book are written to such correspondents as Van Meter Ames, Curt John Ducasse, Max Forrester Eastman, Max Fisch, Sidney Hook, Horace Meyer Kallen, Christopher Janus, Milton Munitz, William Lyon Phelps, and Ezra Pound, and include discussions of the work of Henri Bergson, T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, and Ezra Pound, among others.

From the dust jacket: When George Santayana died in Rome on September 26, 1952, he was recognized as one of the great philosophers of modern times. He was also famous as the author of the immensely successful novel "The Last Puritan" and as the author of his autobiography. Reviewing the second volume in "The New Yorker," Edmund Wilson referred to "Persons and Places" as an "autobiography with a metaphysical plot: it stands somewhere between Proust's great novel and "The Education of Henry Adams," less dramatic and intensse than the former but much richer in wisdom than the latter, and with much more humanity in it, with much more of the color of life and the understanding of human beings than the "Education" of Adams included."
