Book Description
Featuring 80 all new maps and more than 350 photos, this guide is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with almost a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic's century-long association with America's national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence.
The book opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, and an introduction to the guide with a locator map showing all 58 of these American treasures (including the newest, South Carolina's Congree National Park). Next, the parks are presented alphabetically region-by-region, with individual maps and geographical profiles of each. These colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it's an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife and more. Itineraries and directions, special activities and advisories, and suggestions of hotels and campgrounds are provided, along with scores of ideas for excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, and other nature areas of exceptional interest140 in all.
From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here's all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks plus invaluable recommendations and advice from the National Geographic writers who know them well.
Customer Reviews:
Really enjoyed this book.......2007-08-10
Good book of national parks. Good practical information for the short term visitor (how many people have the vacation time to spend 2 weeks anywhere? not many i think) which is welcome to see. I'd recommend this book if you'd like to get a feel for where you'd like to go, what you might see when you're there and where you might stay. Once you've figured that out you might do well looking elsewhere for some detailed information, but for the casual visitor the basic information (10 - 20 pages per park) is great. I'd recommend this book if you're either someone who's like to visit a few parks or someone who's trying to work out which park to go, or someone who'd just like to flick through to see if there's something you hadn't considered before.
Buena ayuda.......2007-07-15
Es una guia fantastica, para recorrer los parques nacionales de EEUU y disfrutar al maximo lo que ofrecen.
National Geographic Guide to the National Parks.......2007-05-14
Very informative, very useful, good size for carrying it around,
great book.
Nice overview.......2007-05-14
Very nice book if you want an overview over national parks in the USA.
Excellent guide.......2007-05-07
Perfect if you want to get a general idea of all National Parks available. Once you decide where you are going, I recommend getting a more detailed guide specific to the place you decided to visit.

Customer Reviews:
One volume of a great series.......2001-03-17
Not just for writers, but historians, hobbyists, and anyone interested in the small details of life in other times. This volume, like the others in the series, includes chapters (with figures and illustrations) on food, clothing, family life, work, education, religion, leisure activities, social and political history, etc. Great for browsing, great for research. Recommended.
In-depth, useful information.......2000-04-01
I just bought this book, in spite of the previous review, and found it useful and informative. I was surprised by the depth of the information.
If you are working on any piece that requires exhaustive research I'm sure you would want to check more than one source. But this book is a wonderful place to begin your research.
Proceed with Caution.......1999-10-03
This book does give a good general overview of many aspects of Colonial life and is probably useful. However, much of what's presented as fact is actually the author's opinion or is not proveable at this late date, or has been written about differently in different sources.(Example: that slave owners usually treated slaves well.)
Also, it necessarily gives a very shallow view of Colonial life, which is suited to the intent of the book but may not be suited to your needs. If you're planning to write a Harlequin Romance that takes place in Colonial America you can probably get by with this. If you have in mind more of an Anya Seton approach, you will need to do considerable research in addition to reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
Clownfish.......2007-09-07
it was really informative. I feel when i am ready i may be able to mate my clowns successfully with confidence. i also appriciate the background the author went into.
Great book for clown fish breeders........2007-08-29
This reads well and has great background on breeding clownfishes. It gives you the right level of detail to understand what you will have to do to be successful. I have been breeding clownfish with this and another book as my guides and this is the better one of the two. The other is more detailed but so scientific it is confusing. This one is reasonable as a resource. I have an M.A. in aquatic botany so I understand jargon, but breeding fish is a practical activity for many of us, not a scientific research endeavor. You'll like this as a resource if breeding these interesting fish.
Good luck
Tim
Really nice book on Clownfishes AND host anemones.......2006-11-10
Of the many books i got, this is by far the most detailed. Also because it focuses on one kind of fish i guess.
pretty detailed info is available on the various clownfish types, some of the behaviours are also listed to understand your pet a little better.
not a book focussed on filling pages for sure. however, a bit more was expected for detailed trouble shooting issues concerned to behaviours.
overall a nice book if you want to get to know your clown or the anemones.
The perfect book for the hobbyist.......2006-01-26
If you're interested in keeping clownfish, this is the perfect book. The author goes into appropriate detail on what is needed to keep clownfish, what kinds of anemones can be kept with them (and their requirements), and how to breed them if you're so inclined. I found the book very easy to understand and not overly burdened with scientific and technical language. I also thought she had a very funny sense of humor that is sprinkled throughout. The pictures are great and she's actually had experience with most species in captivity and is able to make careful distictions to specific characteristics or needs of the different species. Some things I found especially helpful were the chapter on clownfish nutrition (she's really done her homework on that) and the common sense approaches to copepod cultivation for feeding baby clownfish. A great book for those keeping clownfish, even if you're not interested in breeding them.
THIS BOOK WAS GOOD BUT I LIKED ANOTHER ONE BETTER.......2005-09-13
THIS BOOK WAS A GOOD BOOK, HOWEVER, WE WANTED TO GET INFO. ON BREEDING AND MATING MAROON CLOWN FISH. WE FOUND "CONDITIONING, SPAWNING AND REARING OF FISH WITH AN EMPHASIS ON MARINE CLOWNFISH" BY FRANK H. HOFF A BIT MORE ALONG THE LINES OF WHAT WE WANTED TO KNOW.

Barron Delivers Another Classic.......2007-09-24
Having worked in pet stores for many years, I have dealt with lots of books. By far, my favorite are the Barron line of books. These books are not only informative, but are individual in themselves. Whereas with other books, they give you an overview of the animals at the beginning, Barron books give you the authors own experiences and learnings. "Clownfish and Sea Anemones" is a great book for the new marine aquarist who is first starting out, as these little fish and their symbiosis with anemones are usually their first introduction to saltwater aquariums. From setting up the tank, info on different variations in species, and disease info, this book is a wonderful intro to these amazing little fish and their lifemates, the anemones. For more information, read more books from John Tullock. This author will truly open the doors of this hobby to the knowledge starved aquarist.
Poor..........2000-04-27
Don't buy this book if you want to learn to care for your clownfish, or sea anemones. It is only marginally good at identification, and is sparse on content about selection, care, feeding, etc. The pictures/illustrations are pathetic, and it also has a bunch of "unnecessary" information about how to care for a marine aquarium. I didn't buy the book to learn how to take care of an aquarium. I bought the book to learn how to take care of clownfish and anemones. This book looks like a book that was published in 1973 and has been sitting on the shelf of your public library since then.
More about clownfish than anemones.......2000-03-04
Generally, this is a book about introducing a novice to clownfishes. It provides a reasonable introduction to keeping and breeding clownfish, but the coverage of anemones is minimal (it is after all less than $10.00). In some cases, though, it oversimplifies their care (doesn't say anything about how to feed an anemone for example). If I bought this book, I definitely wouldn't think I had enough knowledge to purchase and keep an anemone. However, as far as keeping clown fish (which are quite hardy to begin with), its a good intro for the beginner.
Concise introductory guide........1999-11-25
The author of one of the best aquarium books (Natural Reef Aquariums) writes about everyone's favorite fish. What could possibly be better? Actually, the book is very limited in scope, and clearly produced down to a price. Brief sections classify anemonefish and the anemones, describe how to set up and maintain a tank, how to feed clownfish, which species to keep with clownfish, and some tips on breeding clownfish.
Classification of both the anenomes and clownfish is covered better in the book 'Anemone Fishes and Their Host Sea Anemones'. The Care and Breeding of Clownfishes is covered better by Joyce Wilkerson in her book 'Clownfishes'. And the setup and maintenance of a tank is covered better by just about every acquarium book out there.
That said, within the limits of the space and format of the book, the coverage is as good as could be expected. The book brings together sufficient information to get beginners started. The book will tell you How to, but not Why. If this is all you want to know (and if you local acquarium shop is good), then this book is probably all you need.

Good book for beginners-- Not in depth enough for advanced.......1998-11-11
If you are a beginning aquarist with a desire to plunge straight into marine fishkeeping and in particular clownfishes and anemonies, this is an excellent book. It is easy to read and understand and is pretty basic. This book takes you from start to finish in setting up a tank for clowns and covers lighting, filtration/protien skimming, some different species of clowns and their characterristics and individual needs as well as a pretty decent list of the types of anemonies that each will accept as a host. If you can successfully maintain a freshwater aquarium, you can most likely use this book as a guide to set up and maintain a marine tank with clowns. If on the other hand, you are an advanced aquarist more interested in breeding, spawning behavior, specific info and fine tuning your set up, I recommend The book "Clownfishes: a Guide to Their Captive Care, Breeding& natural History by Joyce D. Wilkerson.
Book Description
A reference guide for beginners to achieve a successful marine tank, keep fish alive and healthy, and save hundreds of dollars in the process.

Then you're probably sitting in the same spot we were many years ago. This book is everything we wish we had been told up front and all of the keys and tips to getting your aquarium healthy. The authors are now owners of their own saltwater fish and coral business but started off as beginner saltwater aquarium enthusiasts just like you. They have compiled and provide to you all of the information they have learned over the years for starting and maintaining a healthy saltwater fish aquarium. This book will give you some new, unique, and innovative ideas on water temperature, fish compatibility, and many other aspects of your saltwater aquarium.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-05-25
This book is the best I've found regarding saltwater aquariums. I think it's great not just for beginners but also for people like me who have started a tank some time ago and can't get the fish to last very long. It included just about everything I needed to know to get started but was very easy to read as it sticks to the basics without overloading you with a bunch of technical marine biology talk like some of the other books I've seen. Great in depth analysis of the types of saltwater fish. The book's information on water temperature was something I had never heard before and that alone was worth the price in my case. As they say in the book some of their ideas definitely go against what you normally hear in pet stores and other books so just keep that in mind. But I used to not be able to keep fish like Tangs alive in my tank for any length of time until I tried some of their new ideas. My tank is now in great shape after reading this, great book!

Book Description
A practical guide for growing healthy trees.
As the most dominant and permanent feature in any garden, trees establish a landscape's character more than any other plant. A well-chosen tree in the right location adds color, form, and dimension.
Moreover, trees can filter the air of pollutants, muffle noise, screen the sun, calm the wind, attract birds, reduce soil erosion, raise the water table, and increase property values. Knowing which varieties to grow and how to maintain them is a must for anyone who owns trees or is considering planting one.
The Tree Doctor is a comprehensive manual for tree selection, care, and maintenance. The authors cover the options to consider before buying and what to look for when making your selection.
Other topics include: tree placement; choosing a healthy tree from a nursery; proven urban varieties; detailed planting, pruning, and watering instructions; protecting trees from pests, disease, and weather; diagnosing problems; identifying hazardous trees; and how to hire qualified experts when needed.
The Tree Doctor is an easy-to-understand guide for growing healthy trees that will benefit generations to come.

Book Description
This monograph gives a comprehensive overview of the designs and built work of Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn, from 1973 until the present day. Besides architecture, urban design, interiors and furniture, the book dwells at length on the informal and conceptual projects--films, clothing, everyday objects--developed by van Herk & de Kleijn throughout their career. Their joint oeuvre is explored in a continuous narrative that makes no distinction between the ingenious rooflights of their own houseboat and a major housing project like Haarlemmerhouttuinen in Amsterdam, and focuses just as easily on their ultra-light half-meter-high platform shoes as on one of their interiors. If the significance of their work lies in their liberal concern for everyday things, this volume emphasizes their approach as one that eschews image in favor of imagination, of giving shape to the things with which we surround ourselves. The visual narrative, with explanatory texts by Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn, is complemented by an in-depth essay by Hans Ibelings and a foreword by the landscape architect Adriaan Geuze. Customer Reviews:
Design for the Inhabitants.......2007-10-16
I am very happy with this book. If you check their website, you can find out what styles of architecture they have been able to build, but it does not tell you the story. This monograph provides all the rest. As you move through pages quickly, the atmosphere both resulting from the projects and the graphic design is very academic but free. It reminds of an architecture school environment with all the mess and dirt from the process of searching but of the nonconformists who try to follow their own paths. You also get the impression that they do not hide anything. But this alone would not be interesting without what they have built and developed over time. Documentations of their projects and the texts are thorough enough to tell this story over last thirty something years and to give good lessons for the countries where the modernist buildings have covered their now generic cities, and as a result, people are starting to be aware of the importance of living environment. It shows what socially conscious projects can be and how they might be expressed in built form and in space. The three essays also explain the positive aspects of their works, which may not be evident from the modest appearances due to the programs with small budget.

Book Description
Three Generations of Black Women in Motion In this vivid family memoir told in the voices of three generations of women, poet Natasha Tarpley sets her own migrations in the context of a long line of African-Americans' stories.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2006-03-11
Don't buy this book if you are expecting a true look in the mirror from the author. If I were to re-title this book, I woulld call it "Searching" because that is what the three generation of women seem to be doing throughout the book - searching for love, searching for themselves, searching for connections. Pay attention from beginning to end, because you can easily get lost when you're reading this. After reading the entire book I could appreciate it more, because the book did make me think. The conclusion I came to after reading this is that our older generation is definitely more wise and better equipped than the younger, more "prosperous" and so-called educated bunch of us. Worth the buy, but don't have really high expectations from this book is my advise.
An extraordinarily insightful and provoking book........1998-11-24
As a young woman of the same age as Ms. Tarpley with very similar life experiences, I was truly moved by her ability to so effectively communicate her story. Her voice is strong and reveals great wisdom and confidence. Yet, there is also a calmness, which suggests innocence and frailty. This mix of emotions was effective in characterizing the search for connectedness which so many young African American women find themselves involved in.
A book about black history, family history and love........1998-10-23
This book tells the story of black migration north, of strong independent woman who still need love and how they find that love (good and bad). It is a short, powerful novel that shows strong family ties in a very poetic way. It gives the reader a lot to think about which is what good books do.
