Book Description
This digital document is an article from Polymer Engineering and Science, published by Society of Plastics Engineers, Inc. on December 15, 1996. The length of the article is 3988 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
From the author: Steel-belted tires are usually made by extruding rubber onto a bank of wires. The resulting steel-polymer composite must meet a gauge specification. However, the composite swells extensively after leaving the die throat, taking on a more or less corrugated appearance. This paper presents an experimental study to understand the influences different parameters have on die swell for this sort of extrusion. Basically, the experiment is conducted to correlate die opening gauge to die swell. Parameters that affect die swell extrudate expansion are identified and investigated. Die opening is varied throughout the experimental process, and the die opening and belt gauge are measured to calculate die swell. To achieve a more uniform gauge across the width of the belt, the die throat opening is divided into five zones. Each zone of each die throat is considered. Experimental parameters held constant include wire parameters, polymer parameters, and setup parameters. The experimental data result in an overall plot of die swell percent vs. die throat opening gauge. This plot can be used as a guideline for predicting required gauge opening in a steel belt gauge development. The study shows that die swell percents for extruded belts is more predictable than previously thought, and debunks the notion that die swell percent is constant. With regard to the time and effort for optimizing future die throat development, some concluding remarks and recommendations are made based on the analysis of the experimental results obtained in this study.

An astonishingly good book.......2004-08-10
Dressage, isn't that just a bunch of horses being ridden around in circles? How could a book about it possibly be interesting, especially if you don't ride that way? If that is what you think, read on... Sylvia Loch has written a masterpiece in a style that does far more then just talk about "Dressage". Her book has topics of interest for virtually every dicipline, from western to jumpers. Sylvia has put together more history, more people, and more horse breeds then it would seem to be possible. She has artfully presented it in a way that makes it resonate to virtually everyone by showing how they are all connected through history. Better still, she has done it in a way that is fascinating and contemporary to read. I found her style eloquent and conclusions insightful. Reading this book will contribute to any riders understanding about where the modern horse has evolved from, and more importantly, how current teaching methods relate to historic methods. By reading the title of the book I might have put it last on my list, after reading it, I have put it FIRST!
Beautiful and thoughtful.......2001-08-22
This book is truly a work of art, not to mention dedication in its fine summary of the history of dressage from early Greek history on to modern times. The knowledge I gained from this book is immeasurable. It has improved my riding, my understanding of dressage, my appreciation of this fine art of horsemanship, and most of all the incredible athletic ability, generous nature, and humbleness of our equine partners.
A in-depth look at riding in its historical context.......1998-11-04
As the nature of horseback riding has changed from the original, practical purposes to being a recreation and past-time, riding styles have changed from what is best for horse, to what is most expedient for the casual rider who wants to "enjoy" horses. An example of this phenonema from US-style western riding is the "sliding stop". When a horse is very responsive, it should be possible to stop quickly in order to change direction, and sometimes the horse is going so fast he slides to a stop. Unfortunately, "responsiveness" is difficult to judge, and sliding is dramatic, so an original practical ideal of being able to change a horse's direction has turned into a contest to see how far a horse can drag itself by the front hooves while letting the back hooves drag on the ground. A similar corruption of purpose and technique has played itself out in almost every riding discipline as those activies have become more removed from any practical purpose.
This is one of the only books that attempts to place riding in its proper context in history. Its points are illustrated with many rare color and black & white prints of historical paintings and photographs that are invaluable in learning how to ride. The major riding masters of history and what they discovered are all presented in a way that makes one want to learn more. Anyone wishing to increase their understanding of riding past past what is currently fashionable should own this book.

This is a wonderful book by one of the acknowledged masters. It's now out of print and very hard to find. This continues the work of a previous book, Classical Principles of the Art of Training Horses. In both of these books Oliveira seeks to pass along the lessons he has learned in a lifetime of riding and training horses. There are several photos of Oliveira riding, showing the lightness and brilliance for which he is known.

Very Good Indeed.......2005-03-18
Well researched and informative. Reasonably priced. A really good book for those interested or want to offer a unique present to someone.
Lovely little gem but title a joke/untrue.......2004-12-24
Nice little gem of a book but it only devoted,it turned out, about half a page or a few small paragraphs to the actual subject of how to grow poppies. No joke. And what little info there, was very scant and poor. The initial reason that had prompted me to buy the book was indeed after my own unsuccessful attempts to grow poppies. So the title does'nt make any sense and it's certainly NOT a practical guide. However it does offer alot of interesting curios and gems of knowledge on the subject of opium in many disparate fields from scientific to historical. It is not a book to take too seriously but it was very informative and i learnt a lot of stuff i previously didn't know about. On a practical level it does tell you how to slit the popppies, make poppy tea and advises youu buy' hens and chicks' variety at florists as the right ones to buy but almost next to nothing on actual cultivation.Opiate addicts or the simply curious will find it all interesting including the lovely snippets of chemistry and potted history and the like.Recommend. Enjoyable read.5/5
Dated, flawed, but a fun read.......2004-04-28
One thing to keep in mind - this was published in
1994 - an age ago in info terms. There's more info
available through two minutes on Google than there
is in this book - but there certainly wasn't ten
years ago.
It's true that Hogshire is recklessly optimistic about
the joys of 'opium' use - actually, what he's talking
about is poppy tea. However, every bell curve has two
ends. There are some who will get hooked with their
first mug o' tea - and some who can take it and leave
it alone. Yes, it's possible to sample opium and not
get addicted - but frankly, the odds are against it.
I gave this book three stars for entertainment value.
More complete or accurate information would have
warranted four, at least. But it is an interesting
relic of the days when information like this was
obscure and hard to find.
Practical Schmractical... Guide Scmide.......2004-04-10
First off the title is simply false advertisement. There is definitely nothing practical about this book at least not having to do with "growing poppies or making opium." Although in a life boat situation it would make a practical source of toilet paper. It is incredibly informative if you have never heard words opium or poppy before. Definitely not for anyone of any intelligence to profit from. I wouldn't even rate this book with one star if i had that choice, it was written purely to profit monetarily from a catchy title. 100 pages of a guy shooting his spun wad in your ear ",oh yeah it's warm, do you like that? is that what you want to here? tell daddy what you want to here" SQUIRT 4 pages of source material I dont think he even read but simply listed to fill-in all the gaps left in his b.s. (and by b.s. I don't bachelor of science). Seriously for the money and on the subject there are books infinitely more valuable. Go to books also purchased by people who purchased this one pick one at random it couldn't be worse. If for some reason you do purchase this book don't expect a practical guide to anything. By the way I am pro-freedom pro-knowledge I am anti-this book because I don't think it took two days to write and it is negligent to title it as he does ( a book like this would be marketed to 12 year olds in a free america and it would be below there readig level). By the way kids just a rule of thumb "never take more than you can handle and always know your dealer"
Don't be a fool........2004-01-08
I am in fact, a card-carrying member of the ACLU. I don't believe that there are "dangerous books" any more than I think there are "dangerous ideas". I do believe that the danger of ignorance is incalculable. What Mr. Hogshire has rendered here is a thin monograph of mis-information, dis-information and outright lies.
Following Mr. Hogshire's advice I took my self down to West 28th street and bought a bunch of dried ornamental poppies. I ground them, sifted them, made tea out of them, drank it and got as high as I have ever been. As a point of reference, I have had morphine for a broken leg; this tea was both stronger and longer lasting.
Like all narcotics occasional use led to daily use which led to addiction and to a nightmare of recovery that took over a year out of my productive life. I very nearly ruined my marriage, my career and everything else that mattered to me. Finally in abject humiliation and with the deepest gratitude I found people who could and did end my nightmare. My life is improving as is my health, but I have a long way to go to make up for the lies I told everyone including myself.
These are the facts. Opium in it's raw state is many time more addictive than Heroine, as some of it's many active components have a significantly longer serum half-life than heroine. Figuratively, for those of you that aren't doctors, this means that this stuff gets in your bones and wont let go for weeks.
Opium destroyed the nation of China, laying such vast waste to its people that it took nearly a century for it to recover. Many foreign observers felt that the death penalty for opium use imposed by the Communist government was draconian. It was, rather, the only way to cut this cancer out of their society.
My advice: if you want to read about opium, read about the opium wars in China in the nineteenth century. Or read Mr. Hogshire's little book. But please don't think that because Mr. Hogshire wrote it is true. It in fact flies in the face of every scientific medical fact known about opium.
That this plant's dark, dark magic has held a fascination for mankind since there's been a mankind is interesting. I would expect that you wouldn't need to fire a bullet through your brain to confirm what is known about ballistic injuries. I would equally expect that you wouldn't need to voluntarily take an unholy poison to prove what has been well known to medical science for centuries or more.

Book Description
This anthology documents the surprising and wonderful ways animals have expressed their love for the people and other animals in their lives. The Wonderful Thing About Pets does not contain clichd stories about orphaned puppies or stray kittens. These stories are unusual, like the iguana that saved it's owner's life; they are humorous, like the hamster who consistently out-picks the pros at football pools; they are touching, like the rabbit who acts as a "seeing-eye dog" to another rabbit; and they have made national news headlines, like the cat who braved a blazing inferno to rescue its kittens.
The author, Gary Burghoff, is the host of the successful public television show "Pets: part of the family." Gary has long been known as an animal activist, and his efforts both on and off the show have recently been featured in People and Time magazines. With illustrations by award-winning artist Greg Dearth, this collection defines the depth and timelessness of the human-animal bond.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful book for animal lovers.......2001-09-27
This is a quick and ez read about pets who have done so much for their owners. Most stories are about how either pets have saved their owners lives or helped them with some disability. There are additional stories about animals who love other animals and even some interesting facts about animals. I recommend this book to anyone who loves animals.
These stories are very short, only a few pages each, and there are a total of 36 different stories in this book.
Heart-warming!!.......2001-03-22
I got this book to give to the cat-loving teenage daughter of an old friend and ended up having to read it myself first. It contains one heart-warming story after another of people's love for their pets and how this is reciprocated, as well as stories of love and caring between animals of different speicies. All through the book, I kept saying to my husband, "You have to hear this one!" and read yet another aloud to him. This book will be loved by anyone who has ever shared his or her life with a non-human creature. I plan to give it as gifts to at least a half dozen such people myself. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
A Cabinet Maker's Notebook, Part II.......2007-02-03
This is an excellent book for those who want to take their woodworking to a very high level of craftsmanship.
Mr. Stevens attended the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program. That program was created by Jim Krenov and consequently they still recommend that every student read A Cabinet Maker's Notebook. This book should be what you read after you are done with Mr. Krenov's books. It fills in many of the gaps with detailed, color, high-quality photos and well written text.
I've had the pleasure of attending the three week Tools and Techniques class at the College of the Redwoods. This book almost could be a syllabus for the class because it follows their class so closely. (There are several topics missing however, notably creating a frame and panel door and making drawers.)
There are several things that are done by Mr. Stevens (and the College) that seem to be more drawn out than needed. For example, Mr. Stevens uses dowels/bamboo skewers in place whilst veneering panels. Seems to be a bit overkill; I've never had a problem with veneer sliding around when just good ol'blue painters tape is used. Also, a Festool circular saw along with a Festool saw guide makes quick work of straightening the edge of a veneered panel. (A Festool circular saw and guide will leave a pristene edge.)
This is not just a book about how to make coffee tables ..........2005-06-01
This is a book about how to make beautiful furniture from one of the most meticulous craftsmen working today. I've taken a 2 week class with Craig, and his careful, considered approach to every step of furnituremaking shows through wonderfully in this book. He uses coffee tables as a teaching tool to show you how wood should be treated - like a precious resource deserving of your best efforts to turn it into something astonishingly beautiful.

Customer Reviews:
Very creative.......2006-08-20
Nicolle Aimee Meyer and Amanda Pilar Smith have created a book that is part travel guide, part cookbook, part biography -- and all wonderful! The photographs are terrific. The text brings the markets and their people to life. And I can't wait to try some of the recipes, which are for many classic French favorites. Altogether a complete success! Bravo!!
A Parisian's Paris ..........2001-08-06
A must for anyone seeking out the real Paris, off the beaten track of tourist traps. Even if you can't visit more than two or three markets per visit to this wonderful city, this book will continue to be a major reference for seeking out these fascinating places of food, drink and 'objets'. Happy exploring!
A lovely gem of a book.......2001-07-04
I love this book! The cover roped me right in and before I knew it I was buying it. I am so glad I did. The book is organized by arrondissement; each chapter is devoted to one of them. They tend to focus on the biggest or best market in each arrondissement but they devote paragraphs to the others. The text itself is gracefully written and yet very convivial. For each of the main markets, the authors start you out on a typical Parisian morning and gently suggest the path you might want to follow as you navigate that particular market; it is almost as though they are walking along with you. They tell you what's available at each market and what are each market's strengths and weaknesses. You will be introduced to a lot of people - the butcher at the Marché d'Aligre, the poissonier at the Richard Lenoir, the organic farmer at the Batignolles market, the interesting old fellow who hawks bath salts as he soaks his feet in green water... I feel as though I'd be able to walk up to them and say hi. There's some history mixed in there, too, so you'll get to see some nice old photos and learn about everday Parisians of the past. And of course there are the recipes. Most of them appear delicious and a few rather exotic. Many of them come from the very people that you "met" in the chapter preceding, so you know they're authentic and the human element makes you want to try the recipe all the more.
I love Paris. This book really gives you a sense of what it is like to be there - colorful, vibrant, stately, modern, classic, young, old... Paris is all of these things and more at once. I went there seven years ago and I don't think I hit a single market. This book makes me feel incredibly well-equipped; I think that without it I would feel a bit intimidated. I plan to go back and I'm gonna bring this book with me!
Perfect Christmas Gift!.......2000-11-01
Beautiful photography and lively writing make this a perfect gift this holiday season (or any time) for anyone who likes to eat and loves Paris. Even for a longtime resident of the City of Lights like myself, this book brings another Paris to life, one you will want to explore again and again, in these pages and of course like the authors did themselves, bicycling through every arrodisement, leaving no quartier unvisited, no fromage untasted, no croissant unfinished! A magnificent and original hommage sure to earn its place among the classics of cuisine and travel.
Paris in a Basket.......2000-08-15
The photography is beautiful and the content is very informative and well written. I would like to visit the markets in Paris more than ever now that I have this book.
Customer Reviews:
Surprised.......2005-07-11
I was reluctant to buy this book thinking that it was unlikely that I would get to Paris but I did and have enjoyed it again and again as a street guide to Paris,a source for authentic French recipes, and, with the photographs, a good start for imagining that I got there after all.

Book Description
Tracing and evaluating the development in the history of Japanese culture and society that permits Japan's rapid and continuing modernization, Professor Yoda provides a new and original approach to the modernization of Japan. He starts from the assumption that Japan was better equipped for modernization because pre-modern Japan had already started to abandon Confucian influences. In his account of modernization during the Meiji-period he focuses on general patterns inherent in Japanese culture and society enabling Japan to integrate foreign elements without having to follow foreign models slavishly. "Patterns in culture", such as the Japanese preference for juxtaposing the new and the ancient, are contrasted with China's preference for discarding past institutions in revolutionary processes. The transferability of paradigms such as "absolutism" is accepted with some modifications. In the major descriptive part of the work, the history of economic, political, institutional modernization is presented on the basis of quotations from original Japanese (and Chinese) sources, arranged within the methodological framework of universal historical concepts, indigenous cultural patterns and specific conditions in both countries. The book is composed of two articles previously published in Japanese and Chinese, two new chapters written especially for the volume, and background information provided by Professor Radtke.
Book Description
Publication Production Using Pagemaker melds for the first time expertise in publication production and the specifics of using PageMaker to achieve that task. This is the specialist information you need to supplement the manuals, the kind of information which comes from the author's four decades of practical experience in producing all kinds of publications.
Here you'll find out how to:
- Improve the layout and production process.
- Use templates and `Styles' to achieve speed and consistency.
- Unlock the mysteries of `scripting' and `tags'.
- Avoid repetitive tasks by learning how to sit back and watch PageMaker do the work.
- Organise your workflow and relieve stress.
Most manuals emphasise the freedom in design and production given by programs such as PageMaker this book does not; instead it emphasises how such a program fits into the more rigid structure needed by a strictly formatted publication working to a deadline. There are templates, scripts and more on the book website.
- This book reveals the `secrets' discovered by PageMaker users over many years.
- This book's website provides scripts and templates worth many hundreds of dollars.
- Access to an email advice service all for the price of a book!
Customer Reviews:
what item?.......2006-07-10
I am still waiting for this item to ship, which does not make me very happy.
If you need step by step instruction - Keep Looking!.......2003-10-24
This book is not what I anticipated. If you are somewhat familiar with Pagemaker it is a breeze. I waited for the mail daily just to receive a book that can't even help me. I ended up at the library checking out a 10 year old book that is still more effective in teaching me step by step instructions. It is called "Pagemaker 5.0 for Windows" it is 2 editions earlier but helps way better than this thing!
Not as user-friendly as it sounds.......2003-08-14
The other reviews are very misleading in that it is not a comprehensive how-to on the entire program, as it only covers matters of production in tabloid-formats and newspaper layouts. There is little to no coverage of any other types of publications that can be created using the program, and the langauge is NOT geared toward novices.
Great help to people converting objects into layout formats........2003-05-07
If you are a writer at a community newspaper and suddenly find your publication has adopted Pagemaker to save time and labor costs in putting text files and graphics or advertising into layout, this is a great book for you.
If you have decided to publish your own magazine or newsletter and are a writer instead of an artist, this is a MUST book for you.
If, however, you are an experienced Pagemaker user, depending on your expertise, this book may or may not help you.
I am well experienced in Pagemaker (since beta version 1.0), yet I still found lots of helpful information, particularly in Chapter 9, Scripts and Tagged Text.
Gordon Woolf also has a website for book purchasers to download templates. A nice bonus.
This is an excellent book for anybody wanting to learn how to make the most efficient use of the great product from Adobe.
THE book of its type for novices and experts.......2002-08-06
Back in early 1985, I was working in a university which was PC heaven. I knew nothing about computers until a salesman came to demonstrate a funny beige box with a tiny screen which, he said, would *soon* have a program called PageMaker running on it that we could use to produce publications, including my particular bete noir -- the university handbook (catalog).
To the horror of the PC jocks, I bought a suite of 4 "Fat Macs" and a LaserWriter for my office, and when PageMaker v.1 turned up I began setting up to produce the handbook. It was a steep learning curve. In the end, though, we made it.
I wish 'Publication Production using PageMaker ...' had been available then. Sure, the PageMaker manual was there, and it was good, but it focused on the program. Gordon Woolf's book is different -- it is a book about producing publications first ... and using PageMaker v.7, the current version and the one I now use, to do the job. The book you want to publish is the focus -- PageMaker is merely the tool.
And that's the point -- this is a book written by an old publishing pro about how to get the publishing job done. Gordon tells us he started desktop publishing when typewriters, monospaced type, physical paste-up and spirit duplicators were still the go. As computers developed and publishing programs appeared, so Gordon moved up the scale. His book follows the same path -- it assumes nothing except that you know how to click a mouse and tap on a keyboard, it focuses on the job, and it tells you how to do the job -- step by step.
The magic of this book, though, is that while it opens up a whole new world for publishing novices, it is also teaching lots of PageMaker (and general DTP) techniques.
I have been using PageMaker on a daily basis for longer than Gordon, I believe, but browsing through the book, I found lots of tips and tricks I have been able to incorporate into my workflow. I feel no shame at using Gordon's book to repair my deficiencies -- Gordon Woolf is a widely acknowledged PageMaker and DTP guru!
'Publication Production using PageMaker' is on my bookshelf and is in the "well thumbed" category!

Customer Reviews:
Good book for absolute beginners.......2002-07-04
This is a good resource for absolute beginners to desktop publishing, or for teachers who want to introduce beginning students to DTP. Part I contains information on components, benefits, and the evolution of DTP; design principles; typography; organizational tools and page anatomy; and tips for improving publications. Part II uses Pagemaker 6.5 tutorials to create basic publications, such as flyers, brochures, and newsletters.
The book is spiral-bound, with black-and-white printing, and decent illustrations. It includes a glossary with many examples, particularly related to typography.
The work covered in this book would be appropriate for middle school or high school students or teachers who are absolute beginners.

Book Description
This is the best selling text on the subject. Step-by-step activities at the end of each chapter provide lots of hands-on practice using the features discussed in the chapter narrative. End-of-chapter, on-your-own activities encourage the creation of original documents using newly learned features. Other outstanding features include: presentation of both basic and advanced design concepts (theory and terminology); a full, detailed discussion of features of the new version of PageMaker; end-of-chapter pedagogy to help students in the form of chapter summaries, list of key terms, and review questions.
