Devilishly Delightful Illustrated Reference Work.......2005-04-14

This book is not meant to be an introduction to Wicca or a history of witchcraft and demonology. It's intended purpose is simply to provide an illustrated reference work primarily for historians, teachers, artists, craftsman, and authors working in the area of witchcraft and demonology.

That being said, the book is divided into twelve chapters, each dealing with various aspects of witchcraft, death, demons, and the occult and providing a plentiful cornucopia of illustrations, woodcuts, copperplates, and artwork representative of the subject at hand. The works of Durer, Dore, and others appear together with illustrations from such famous demonological works such as Colin De Plancy's "Dictionnarie Infernal" and Francesco Maria Guazzo's "Compendium Maleficarum" as well as countless others from ancient to modern times.

This is a first class illustrated reference book and will be useful to any number of those interested in the history of illustration of the Dark Arts.

Not What I was looking for but...........2003-07-07

Its great to see history about witchcraft and deamons and so on. Some of the pictures are somewhat disturbing and yet understandable where and how the ignorance of the 16th century began. Please remember, that this book barely has words; its just pictures and nothing else, so, buy it if your a history buff in witchcraft and the occult.

I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting but when I got the book and viewed the pictures I only found a little more than a dozen that were useful or interesting for my purpose. However, if you are an art student or just interested in the occult or demonology then this book will provide some unique and intriguing pictures.

Great Idea -- Disappointing Execution.......2001-02-13

This review has nothing to do with how the book treats Wicca or witchcraft. The only question I want to answer here is how good a collection of illustrations on this historical/mythological subject it is, and the answer is: not very good at all. The quality of the illustrations is terrible for the most part. While there are some decent reproductions, most look like someone put a sheet of onion-skin paper up to a wall in some medieval church and hastily traced the picture underneath, all the while looking over his shoulder to make sure the caretaker wasn't approaching. And if you are looking for some good explanatory text, don't hold your breath. Aside from captions below each illustration identifying artist and source, there are no more than two or three introductory sentences PER CHAPTER. Better quality reproductions and some good research and interpretive text could have made this a scholarly tome. As it stands, it seems more like an attempt to make money off a collection of old tracings that were lying around in someone's grandmother's attic.

This book very clearly explains how to care for a Bichon Frise (b.c.) and its personality. How it handles being around other animals is another thing this book informed me of. After reading this book i knew is exactly what to look for in a b.c. puppy and i am proud to say that because of this book i was able to pick out the best b.c. puppy that anyone could've picked. This book is well worth the money, and i would have glady spent twice as much on it. Anyone who ever reads his book will truely understand the great qualities of the b.c., and most likely be convinced into getting one.

I have found a copy in a local library. Over all, the book shows the autobody of personger cars in 1940s and before. It does not really shows how to make shapes from both wood and metal. However, it does shows how to draw shapes from the material. Somehow, the drawings inside seems too small to me. I personally would concider those pictures are more like a technical drawing guide to me. If you want to know how to make those antique car shapes, this old book would be a good book to concider.

"The Gruber Wagon Works" documents the history of the Gruber family and its small business that operated from 1882 through 1971 in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. From its inception through the remaining decades of the pre-automotive era, the Gruber Works was representative of the many small wagon-making businesses that occurred throughout the United States. As the automotive era emerged, wagon-making businesses typically either transformed or vanished, but the Gruber business an exception -- continued to make wagons and other conveyances until the 1950s and to repair these vehicles through 1971. In the 1970s, the Gruber building and its contents were acquired by the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of a flood-control project and moved about five miles to a site nearer the city of Reading, after which ownership was transferred to Berks County and since which time it has served as a unique museum and interpretive center devoted to documenting and explaining the tools, materials, technology, and process of wagon-making.

I found this book very enlightening as to the construction of the Coach itself. The techniques on finishing I will certainly use in other woodworking ventures. It was nice to find out that the old coaches used lead paint, a hazard I'll have to remember if I am ever lucky enough to find a Coach that old. The down side is that there are not enough drawings or photos of Coaches reconstructed. The few illustrations only whet my appetite for more, so the search continues.

This book is a diamond in the rough. The author presents a well researched, factual account of the issues facing people of African descent in America. The theme of the book--that African Americans must return to their own distinct cultural base in order to overcome the critical problems they face today-- is dead on.

Most importantly, the author analyzes in detail the issue of what distinguishes people of African descent and has (in the past at least) strengthened us: a matriarchal view of society where 1)men and women are considered equal both intellectually and spiritually 2)femininity is viewed as a divine strength not as a weakness 3)men and women work together is cooperative harmony and in recognition and respect for their God-given equality.

If people of African descent are to reclaim their position of power, respect and influence among all other peoples of the world, we must replace the cultural values we have adopted from others with those that will empower us.

Fajor's book outlines what he defines as the "CER model" which BEGINS with African-focused cultural realignment (embracing our traditional matriarchal view of the world and restructuring the African American male/female relationship accordingly) and ENDS with economic empowerment.

This book was particularly profound because it was written by a man who candidly identifies the problems associated with patriarchal, intrinsically sexist views of the world. Because a patriarchal system values men over women, many African American men would prefer to adopt those aspects of European culture which act in their favor. While they are negatively affected by racism, they are positively affected by the effects of sexism. Few understand - or care to admit - that both go hand in hand. We cannot be free from the problems of racism if people of African descent do not re-embrace each other as equal parties and in doing so strengthen their ability to act as a combined, powerful force.

Fajors also does well in highlighting the fact that while racism continues to hinder our success, WE ARE THE ONLY ONES TO BLAME FOR NOT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT OUR CURRENT CONDITION!!

Excuses are a coward's explanation for failure. If we don't help ourselves, no one else will.

Read this book and pass it on! It will positively impact your life. It was an investment well made for me...

p.s. if you haven't read Diop, John Henri Clark, Asante, Francis Welsing or any of the other resources used in the author's research, I recommend exploring the works of those authors first then reading Fajor's work again. It will take on an added meaning for sure!
