Book Description
"By carefully blending anecdotes, personal stories, personal interviews, nice prose, and 'hard' scientific data, Ellins presents a comprehensive picture of coyotes and shows how they've been maligned and also revered historically and nowadays. . . . an important contribution to the field . . ."
Marc Bekoff, University of Colorado, Boulder, editor of
Coyotes: Biology, Behavior, and Management and
The Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior
The coyote may well be North America's most adaptable large predator. While humans have depleted or eliminated most other native predators, the coyote has defied all attempts to exterminate it, simultaneously expanding its range from coast to coast and from wilderness to urban areas. As a result, coyotes are becoming the focus of increasing controversy and emotion for people across the continent from livestock growers who would like to eradicate coyotes to conservationists who would protect them at any cost.
In this thoughtful, well-argued, and timely book, Stuart Ellins makes the case that lethal methods of coyote management do not work and that people need to adopt a more humane way of coexisting with coyotes. Interweaving scientific data about coyote behavior and natural history with decades of field experience, he shows how endlessly adaptive coyotes are and how attempts to kill them off have only strengthened the species through natural selection. He then explains the process of taste aversion conditioningwhich he has successfully employedto stop coyotes from killing domestic livestock and pets. Writing frankly as an advocate of this effective and humane method of controlling coyotes, he asks, "Why are we mired in the use of archaic, inefficient, unsophisticated, and barbaric methods of wildlife management in this age of reason and high technology? This question must be addressed while there is still a wildlife to manage."

Advocacy based on outdated literature... no favor here!.......2006-02-23
"Writing frankly as an advocate of this effective and humane method of controlling coyotes, he asks, 'Why are we mired in the use of archaic, inefficient, unsophisticated, and barbaric methods of wildlife management in this age of reason and high technology? This question must be addressed while there is still a wildlife to manage.'" - from publisher review
What does Ellins mean, "while there is still wildlife to manage"? Advocate a technique that is not approved by EPA nor most states? I thought FIFRA regulated pesticides, and food aversion conditioning chemicals for coyotes are not registered.
"Actually, our project in the Antelope Valley continued for two more years, and the struggle continues to this day throughout much of the United States. Predator management has emerged as a highly controversial and emotion-laden contemporary issue, the extreme camps consisting of those livestock growers who view all predators as vermin that are a constant threat to their economic well-being, and conservationists who advocate the protection of predators at all costs as important components in the balance of nature. With the demise of many other predators in North America, and essentially all other large predators in the United States, the outcome of this controversy now weighs heavily on the survival of the coyote. The challenge is to devise management procedures that can adequately protect the agricultural community from the economic losses caused by free-ranging coyotes, while at the same time creating conditions that will ensure the future of this icon of American independence and adaptability." - from Chapter 1
Look, current coyote management strategies are not perfect. But asking people to give them up for one with a very poor track record in the scientific and management literature borders on unethical. Food Aversion Conditioning - flavor avoidance learning - is a real phenomenon. Legions of psychology students demonstrate it in labs every school year.
However, it has not been shown to work with stopping coyote predation on sheep, goats, calves, watermelon, irrigation lines, cats, endangered birds, or people.
"... it became readily apparent that the practice of management by death, at least in the war against coyotes, is unjustifiable on biological, economic, and moral grounds." -- from chapter 2
The book summarizes a great deal of interesting coyote behavior, particularly related to foraging. There is little original data. For the most part, this is a book telling why people who kill coyotes are wrong. It is not a techniques book on "Managing Predators Humanely Using Food Aversion Conditioning."

Customer Reviews:
Insightful, easy read.......2007-01-06
I really enjoyed this book. It holds your interest, not being at all sleep-inducing. The point of the book is to apply evolutionary psychology to all aspects of organizational behavior. I was fascinated by his discussion of masculinity in management, how difficult it is for women to get to the top because they are not as ruthlessly competitive as men and how hierarchy is inevitable throughout the animal kingdom. He talks about how men are driven to seek status through either of two routes - dominance or achievement. Both can be leaders in their own way, but he identifies leadership with getting to the top slots. This is the only area where I disagree. Leadership has always been associated with power, but the power of ideas is increasingly more important than the power to dominate through force of personality. With the power of ideas, I think it is possible to show leadership upwards without needing or wanting to dominate others.

Customer Reviews:
The travel book I've used in Germany & Austria.......2006-10-26
I moved to Germany 2 months ago and came prepared with three travel guides: 1. Eyewitness Travel Germany; 2. Frommer's Germany's Best-Loved Driving Tours; 3. Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2006. Two months into our stay here we now almost exclusively use the Rick Steves' book..... It is fantastic! His opinionated travel advice always seems to be right on. I highly recommend this book or its upcoming update (2007) to any visiting or moving to Germany.
Useful but limited and too patronizing .......2006-09-18
There is no denying it, this book has lots of useful tips and is easy to use but I did find the tone a bit patronizing at times. I really don't need someone to tell me what to think, even when in a foreign country. I also did not like the "show this book for x% discount" offers - I rather pay full price elsewhere and know the place is in the guidebook on its own merits.
The book covers only the most popular tourist destinations and is a bit lightweight to my taste on historical details. The author offers sensible advice by saying if you spend $3,000 on a vacation another $25 for additional guidebooks is money well spent.
I found the self-guided walking tours despite the not-to-scale maps very useful although I would follow the author's advice and rip the book apart and only carry the vital pages rather than be seen with this book in hand. Of the three guidebooks I used I liked this one the least.
Trite and conventional.......2006-08-20
Was very disappointed with this book. Not only did it cover only the most touristy places, but it left out many more interesting, not as common, sites. The real tip off is that he lists places that "guarantee the price listed here if you show them your copy of this book" or offer a "10% discount" with this book. That isn't really objective reporting in my opinion.
A bit too opinionated for me!.......2006-07-15
I haven't see the TV show, but a friend loves the series and strongly recommended the book. Before our family trip for 10 days throughout Germany, I purchased a few different travel guides. After having each of them in hand before leaving home, we took 3 books with us. By the 3rd day, we only carried 2 books with us: Daytrips Germany, 6th Edition and then as a BACKUP, Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2006. It was okay, but a bit too snarky for me. Using the 2 books together were great for finding tourist sites, great restaurants and hotels that could accommodate 2 adults and 2 kids (most hotels don't have rooms with 2 beds!).
Great book!.......2006-07-06
Rick writes a very practical book with recommended walking tours in the cities or areas he really likes. This book has more detail on these two countries than is covered in his generic "Europe" book. The sites are ranked in three categories based on what he recommends as "must see" and down. Each town that he recommends as an overnight stop has a good list of accomodation with mostly hotels and usually one or two hostels also listed. The descriptions of the hotels bring the places to life. Highly recommend!

124 authentic stencil patterns for ready use by today's artists, craftsmen, designers, decorators, and students.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-10-06
This book has 124 beautiful patterns that include florals, foliage, fruit, scrolls, and even a few animals. Designs need to be scanned, traced, or otherwise copied, as they are printed on both sides of the pages. Some patterns are simple, a few are complex, but most tend to be of intermediate difficulty to cut. I would enlarge some of the patterns and make a few smaller, but almost all of the designs can be reproduced at the sizes in the book. This is an essential book for the Victorian decorator, and is a wonderful complement to Edmund V. Gillon's book, Victorian Stencils for Design and Decoration.

Book Description
Ashtrays have always been popular as collectibles, as they are available in a endless variety of forms. Originally designed and manufactured to be purely functional, ashtrays soon found their way into the advertising world as both promotional items and souvenirs. This book provides an easy way to explore the collectible world of ashtrays. Over 460 beautiful color photos of unusual ashtrays and companion pieces are included to help the collectors identify and price their own finds. Filled with interesting facts, it gives insight to the evolution of ashtrays, and explains how they became such hot collectibles. The many materials used in the production of ashtrays, including glass, ceramics, and porcelain, are also discussed in the book.
Customer Reviews:
A Helpful Ashtray Collecting Resource.......2000-05-17
As someone who is just starting out as an ashtray collector, I found this book to be very helpful and easy to use. Lindenberger makes a lovely presentation in that she uses excellent photographs to demonstrate examples of various types of ashtrays. Written information is limited but still quite informative. The photo quality is quite good and the suggested price guide makes collecting easy and fun. I keep this book handy for quick review after my Saturday morning yard sale attack.
Book Description
Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could describe your garden as a jewel box full of beautiful plant treasures? In this sequel to the bestselling Shocking Beauty, garden impresario Thomas Hobbs shows you how. The Jewel Box Garden is a luscious, full-color book that features 160 new and startling photos by renowned garden photographer David McDonald. Hobbs explains his philosophy of gardening and life, or as he puts it, "Life As We Dream It Could Be." In his own provocative and highly original way, he encourages gardeners to tap into their creativity and invest their heart and soul in creating oases of beauty — intimate spaces where they can escape the pressures of modern life.

The Jewel Box Garden.......2007-07-12
The Jewel Box Garden is a great book full of beauty and inspiration. I was looking for ideas to incorporate my talent for sculpting and the need to do something with my yard.
I also bought Shocking Beauty, it too is a wonderful book. Both are absolute keepers!
The Jewel Box Garden.......2007-05-23
I love it just for the photos alone! I just keep opening it again and again. I particularly love the section on succulents in planters.
Just before purchasing "The Jewel Box Garden", I bought another book by Hobbs entitled "Shocking Beauty" in which a single sentence has provided me with a new perspective on gardening... "Envision pots as jewelly used to decorate and enhance your garden". My gardening to date, in the Rocky Mountains, has been hardy perenials in the natural soil (think of the beginnings of the gardens in "Undaunted Garden")augmented by raised gardens for more my traditional non-xeric plants Given the new perspective gained in Hobbs books (supplemented with a few other authors contributions such as the magazine "Garden Design"), I am creating a very different garden in my open air atrium including statuary for a fountain and a number of gorgeous pots picked up for very reasonable prices at Tuesday Morning who sells overstock at greatly reduced prices. I've added coral and shells to my succulent planters. And have begun adding gorgeous special rocks from our local rock hound shop. I cant wait to see its completion, especially whites and yellows on full moonlit nights when the atrium is alive with moonlight.
Both books are excellent. If I had to choose one, it would probably be the Jewel Box. However that is probably more a personal taste judgement than anything, given I love succulents. The photography in both is very good. And, yes, Hobbs possesses a strongly opinionated personality, however that is very easily overlooked in return for the design knowledge that he is able to impart to the reader. If you resonate with his style of gardening, this is a wonderful read and one of my newest favorites in my vast gardening library.

I love this book so much that I bought several copies and gave them as gifts to gardener friends and relatives. The photos are stunning and the author is opinionated, but I enjoy that. Highly recommended.
For avant-gardist gardening snobs.......2006-01-15
Thomas Hobbs is, at least in the persona he presents in this book, an avant-gardist gardening snob. He sees gardening as a fashion-driven art, where trendy plants are to be discarded as soon as they become too popular with the petit bourgeoisie, for whom his contempt is made clear on almost every page of text. Some of this stuff can't be spoofed, because it's impossible to be more catty than Hobbs here (block quotes preceded by ** and italics presented as ALL CAPS):
** Some gardeners will never learn the art of plant assemblage... As I drive by their predictable efforts, I often wonder, "Is Life Easier?"
** Being a left-handed, Gemini breach-birth ALLOWS me to love tetraploid daylilies. It is WHO I AM BOTANICALLY.
** Bowling balls are appropriate in Marcia Donahue's garden/gallery in Berkeley, California, because SHE DID IT FIRST.
Hobbs is obsessed with rejection of the common and the cliched, but most of his featured gardens also look alike, in part because they're almost all small shaded urban gardens in the coastal Northwest, but more notably because they eschew flowers in favor of foliage plants - mostly bright or spiky - with color from kitschy cast-offs and outré sculpture, including flesh-colored ceramic penises.
In my (hardly original) opinion, a big problem with most people's enjoyment of the arts today is that the field has already done what is pretty or handsome, and since its current practitioners are jaded by their predecessors' work and aspire to being original, they must often produce what most nonspecialists consider ugly. This is notably a problem with architecture and oil painting (and classical music) by about World War I, and haute couture since the Kennedy Administration. So far horticulture has largely escaped the curse of avant-gardist ugliness, but not in this book. I wondered whether it was fair to Hobbs to say he has passed a step beyond "Shocking Beauty" to where much of this book is ugly, but then I came to his penultimate page of prose:
** I have noticed a switch in gardening, from "pretty" to what I call "the New Ugly." I find this fascinating and very, very attractive. In gardening, UGLY HAS BEEN REDEFINED by brilliant plantsmen and -women who get absolutely no thrill from trying to make a pretty picture. By increasing the dosage of all that is weird and unexpected, these thrillseekers are creating powerful, unforgettable experiences.
Umh, NO IT HASN'T! If we wanted "powerful, unforgettable experiences" of ugliness, we would just move into a junkyard next to an oil refinery! That said, if the book's title or dust-jacket reflected this decadent philosophy, I could rate it 4 stars [...]
Perhaps oddly, Hobbs' Vancouver garden is larger, far more colorful and floriferous, and far more beautiful, than the preceding gardens. Hobbs doesn't fail to add a campy dramatic element, however, to his discovery of the Vancouver house:
** I will never forget ringing the doorbell, expecting "Max," [from Sunset Boulevard] or at least Harvey Korman dressed as "Max," to open the door. Instead, a very short Alfred Hitchcock type greeted us, with a badly-wigged woman peering over his shoulder.
As you might have guessed, the text of this book is more about Hobbs' persona than about gardening. But it isn't until the very last page of prose that we learn exactly how, for Hobbs, the garden is therapy - about talking to plants, which most people can't do ("and it shows"!) - and about remembering gardeners who gave him plants and then died of AIDS. Life is a veil of tears, so maybe we should cut him some slack, even if we are not in love with ugliness.

Book Description
This is a charming portrait of childhood in the Russian market town where the great painter and his wife grew up. Bella's warm, humorous stories of her pious Jewish family are illustrated by 36 of her husband's pen-and-ink line drawings.
Customer Reviews:
Primitive and uninspiring, just does not sound authentic.......2003-09-02
I am sorry to say that this was such a bad book, I really was expecting something much better. Bella wrote about her childhood in Vitebsk (Belarus) in a fake "children" style, i.e. using language you see in a homework essay of a ten year old. It was supposed to be cute. But it just did not sound right for me. Second, there are almost no country-specific details at all. Bella does not care about Belarusian culture or the fact that it was under Russian occupation at that point. So, over all, the best thing about this book is Marc Chagall's little graphics. They are so nice and so Belarusian and really convey the feeling of nostalgy for Vitebsk, where I've been on a few occasions. It may be very interesting and educational for a Western reader who does not know anything at all about life in Belarus, (then under the Russian empirial rule), but personally I expected much more.
Touching.......2001-04-04
This book was penetrating and witty, giving a portrait of pre-war Vitebsk that makes the reader feel transported back to that time and location. Sweet without being cloying, the memoir bursts from the pages as if Bella were in front of you, holding a conversation with you.
enchanting child's-eye memoir of Russian Jewish life.......1998-04-18
With illustrations by her husband Marc, Bella Chagall's memoir comes from the poignant brush strokes of childhood, focusing on Jewish holidays and family life. If you are curious about the life your immigrant forebears left behind, this will satisfy. I highly recommend it.
