Following the successful format of the first volume on long- term potentiation -- a leading candidate for the neuronal basis of learning and memory -- Volume 2 brings together the most recent data and hypotheses by top neuroscientists regarding the mechanisms of this phenomenon and of long-term depression (LTD).

The book is divided into several sections covering different aspects of the field ranging from molecular mechanisms of plasticity to computational neurobiology. It revisits some of the major points covered in Volume 1, updating them in this fast-moving field. It also introduces several new issues that have arisen since then. Of the many possible new topics that could have been added, the editors have focused on retrograde messengers and the mechanisms and functions of LTP and LTD because they are the subject of much interest, research, and controversy. The section on retrograde messengers deals primarily with nitric oxide.

this has some great anecdotal stories for those of us who grew up with the misery that accompanies being a cleveland sports fan but, by no means, is it good literature. it's entertaining, if not somewhat confounding because of the memories that it dredges up, if you want some light bathroom reading.

Long Drought for Superbowl and the World Series!.......2006-03-11

The book was very interesting. It was a quite an experience to learn from, with the desire of failing to win a national championship. Being a Cleveland fan for 25 years, how much longer do we have to wait to win the superbowl. Remember 2 out to go to win the World Series. Watch out for those flying bottles, whoa did you see that! Yeah, I was there too!

Just What We Needed!.......2005-12-07

I don't believe in curses but something has been going on in Cleveland sports for most of my life and it hasn't been good. Finally someone has put the crazy, absurd and disappointing down on paper and I think it's great. I was too young to remember Herb Score and my family talks about Rocky Colavito like he was a saint. I remember I cried as a little kid when Brian Sipe's pass ended up as "Red Right 88". But there's other neat stuff in this book that's funny and not so well known that helps us Cleveland sports fans deal with our plight. Curses! is a fun and easy book that's a must for every Clevelander, sports fan or not.

Excellent resource.......2005-08-12

This is the type of book you want to own if you are involved with design. It's great for those times when you need to create something that relates to this school of design - it is also pure inspiration. Surprisingly for a design book, this comes with a text part that contains a refresher on Japanese design.

The book is a good guide, available with suitable photographs.
However , a detailed feature on goldian finches , especially a chapter devoted exclusively to the breeding of gouldian finches would have been better. The book has enabled me to give the right light and shade conditions plus food supplements to finches. So far I have successfuly bred society finches and have even placed goldian eggs in society finches' nest.Results still awaited. But contrary to the fact that gouldians feed their first clutch , I wish to pinpoint that though a chick did hatch successfully from the initial clutch , the parent birds made no effort to look after it. This is in total contradiction to the details given in the book.

This is the most often used book I continually return to for landscaping reference and guidance. It's well written and will have you on the way to improving your landscape after the first read. One reviewer mentions Rita is opinionated. This is true. So you'll have to read around some of the opinions and decide for yourself what holds true for your property.

If you need just one landscaping book, I would highly recommend this book. It has a great balance of ideas, pics, & text. It is well structured and organized.

Most comprehensive text on planning a garden.......2003-05-22

I admire Rita Buchanan's style.

In a time of the pre-digested, summarized 'Idiot's Guides', she addresses landscape design in a methodical and logical progression. The text doesn't get bogged down in species' names and planting plans, but instead opens our minds to the larger questions of overall goals and needs. As such, I have found this to be the perfect companion as I plan my garden, opening my mind to the wider possibilities that I hadn't considered.

Having said that, you might be disappointed if you are looking for a book to 'dip into' for rapid solutions. I have found this book more rewarding if you have 30 minutes to spare with a comfy chair and cup of coffee, rather than just a 3 minute break.

Comprehensive and well designed; sometimes too opinionated.......2000-11-13

The book is what its title says and that's good - a master guide to landscaping. While I respect Ms. Buchanan's opinions on matters of landscaping since she obviously is versed enough to complete this well done and comprehensive book, it seems to me that her opinions sometimes get in the way of common, useful, tried and true landscaping practices. Example: On page 229 she adamantly states, "...Disregard anyone who tells you to set hedge plants in a zigzag pattern...", yet the picture above depicts just that and, quite frankly, it's commonly recommended to do so. As a designer, I do use that technique for hedge planting because it creates a billowy effect and it's more visually interesting, in many instances. The point is, that statement is an opinion that may not be based on anything more than personal taste.

Having said that, it's an excellent and in-depth guide to the extensive field of landscaping and a very good book just to see what her educated opinions might be. Keep an open mind and refer also to other more task-specific books and expertise when faced with landscape challenges. This book certainly will entertain one with its views, many of them interesting and useful.

Very complete.......2000-07-10

An incredibly complete guide to landscaping your home with many illustrative photographs and diagrams. The author covers everything from the setting up landscaping goals to the techniques of putting in edgings, paths, fences and on to choosing and caring for plants. The author does not pull her punches, coming out, for example, clearly against landscape fabric. Although information on the plants themselves is limited, it is an excellent overall gardening book that can be supplemented by more detailed plant guides.

Excellent Beginner's Guide.......2002-04-02

I found this book to be very helpful. As stated in one of the other reviews, it is not an exhaustive reference, nor does it highly detailed. However, it is an excellent guide to gardening principles and ideas. The plant encyclopedia is comprehensive enough for the average gardener, and expains basic plant characteristics. I like the pictures, and think the basic layout of the book is ok, but it could use some improvement. I was able to buy my copy used, and would not recommend paying the full price.

Taylor's Master Guide to Gardening.......2000-08-06

Overall, I was disappointed by the book. The information provided is accurate but limited. Of the some 400 Primula species that exist, 5 are listed, similarly, the 70 Aquilegias are covered by only 4 species and the over 500 Potentillas have only one species described. Granted this is a "one-volume reference" with photos of the 1000 so-called "best plants", the book does not claim to be exhaustive. This book ranks low in my library. The photographs are often out of focus and the colours are poorly produced. The brief plant descriptions are separated from the photographs and are not overly helpful. The book may be useful to the less ardent gardeners of the world but given the hefty price tag, I would spend my money elsewhere. Anyone taking this volume to the nursery to buy plants would only have the barest notion of what to buy. I would urge others to purchase the smaller more focused guides in the Taylor's series.

Excellent encyclopedia of trees, shrubs and flowers.......1999-05-13

We purchased this book on buying a new home to search out trees, shrubs and flowers to include in our landscape design. As such, the book is excellent. I would not buy this book for plans and actual design patterns. The first chapters of the book give general introductions to gardening strategies; then beautiful and thorough plant identification. The ending chapters are on hardiness zones, plant care . Makes a wonderful reference book. Highly recommend.

A brave and gutsy chronicle of an inter-racial family. Minerbrook draws vivid pictures of human beings struggling with cultural differences, gender issues, and parental failings as well as unyielding prejudice by both races. He never condemns, only describes grippingly. He not only survived; he achieved wholeness and stability despite stunning obstacles. I'll never look at a bi-racial person the same way again.
