Rick Steves writes my favorites guidebooks, no matter where I'm going. His books are laid out in an easy way to find things, and I like how he lays out some great walks to take in the city. I read other books to get tips, but Rick's books are the ones that I actually take in my suitcase, to reference while I'm there.

Best guide for a first time visitor!.......2007-01-09

My husband and I went to Paris in October and without Rick Steves we would not have gotten nearly as much out of the trip. His guide gave us some great ideas for walking tours, tips on when to visit certain sites and overall help on making the most of the trip. We were first timers to Paris, but I will use this guide for any future trips - it is full of great information. Highly recommended!!

I bought this travel guide to find some of the less obvious attractions in Paris. Not only did I find those, but I also
found some wonderful tips for places I already knew. Information about trains,
special hours, etc, were extremely helpful. It was like having a local give you tips on the
city. The only thing I thought could be improved was that the guide does not
give much information on upscale hotels and restaurants, so if you want to splurge, you need to check out
another guide book.

Good but much missing.......2007-05-13

Maybe I expected too much from a book that was only ~$10 but it wasn't very clear on several very important topics in the book and too often resorted straight to simple conversations. Although this was a downfall, overall the book was a very enjoyable read, and was fairly informative. I hate the fact that it uses romanization, but since it always had the hiragana/kanji right below it, I will not complain too much :) overall a good book for intermediate Japanese students that want a very basic guide to speaking (and understanding) one of the more colorful dialects of Japan.

Interesting Stuff..........2006-12-17

This book does a great job of looking at the Kansai area forms of Japanese. As a dialectology fan, I found this book entertaining. Explanations and examples are extremely detailed, and a large amount of different subject material is highlighted.

In addition to people who intend to interact with Kansai area speakers, I suggest this book to those who are interested in the dialects of Japan in general. Language is an ever-changing organism, and much of the original flavor of local dialects is forever being lost in many areas. This book goes beyond being practical in that sense, because even if Kansai-ben has been greatly eroded by Tokyo Japanese in the future, this book will be a surviving record of what used to be.

Oki ni, Parutaa-san, Kaori-san!.......2006-10-11

"Colloquial Kansai Japanese" is an updated and expanded edition of Palter and Slotsve's classic "Kinki Japanese*". This book was the key that unlocked the mysteries taking place in everyday conversations during a homestay in Kyoto. It enabled me to answer a very polite cabdriver in Osaka about what I had done while in Osaka. Just the other day, I became friends with a Kyoto native who was really happy to hear my "Kyoto accent", although I spoke not a word of Kansai-ben!

I highly recommend this book to:

* anyone who will spend more than two weeks in the Kansai area, especially homestay students and company workers that will need to converse with homestay family members, colleagues, local merchants, and others.
* anime otaku who watch subs rather than dubs.
* Japanese students interested in dialects.

Since I can't seem to locate my battered copy of "Kinki Japanese" after moving, I'm going to pick up a copy of "Colloquial Kansai Japanese". It's that good.

*Don't laugh, "Kinki" has nothing to do with love hotels or hostess bars. "Kinki" refers to the time when the Kansai area was the political center of Japan, and "kinki" means "the neighborhood of the capital". For many years, Kyoto was the capital of Japan. I suggest you read The Tale of Genji or Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book to capture the flavor of that era's history.

Why the title change? At one time, Tuttle published two books on this subject, the other being Peter Tse's "Kansai Japanese". Tse's book is no longer in print.

I was quite disappointed with this collection. There is a significant amount of mid 19th century work in here, which is difficult to use - if a use could be found for it.

No cd-rom included. You'll have to scan whatever you want to use. Not a huge deal, however some of the ornaments in here are quite small and the resulting scans will be of somewhat low quality.

This book is wonderful. I'd be lost without it. It's also a very enjoyable read. It does not pretend to be an encyclopedic reference, so get something else (with photos...) for that purpose.

Like Linne Faulk, who wrote a related guide, I am a transplant from Michigan. Moving to Florida was just about equal to moving to another planet. My wife and I are homeowners in Cape Coral, found ourselves in Plant Hardiness Zone 10b, but you know, you just have to try different things. We have a butterfly garden which went way whacko with too many dune sunflowers and not enough tropical salvias, gallardias, firebushes, and Bahama cassia.

One item to update (this anecdotal book was published eight or nine years ago): There is still Miami sludge, Grade AA, but it is no longer known as "Florida Organix" or "daorganite". Further, in talking with the Lee County Extension Office, products such as Milorganite and Grade AA Miami sludge are being panned as less effective than originally thought.

Ultimately, I found gardening to be an art - you never truly master it. But while you're doing it, you must keep your mind constantly engaged because you do learn something new - sometimes paradoxical - every day.

I enjoyed the book immensely, especially the old-timer's (Mr. Songdahl) stories. Two of my favorites are the guy who put his whole lawn in a rock garden and bronzed his mower and the transplant who received a one-sentence report on the soil sample he sent back to his old extension agent in Iowa: something like "The only things you don't need are rocks and seashells." So true of Cape Coral, and it seems the only remedy for the packed ocean bottom we have for land is the annual amendment of compost or green manure. By the way, we're soon to come under water restrictions, so think more in terms of lots of native plants and very little, if any, grass. Being an old corporate accountant, that's my Plan B for what it's worth.

The wise gardener who is computer literate first will link with the Universtiy of Florida website at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu. This site has been a treasure trove of gardening and horticultural information - along with "texts" to help in becoming certified as a Florida Master Gardener, one of my goals.

Humorous tips and practical advice on Fl gardens, lawns, trees & shrubs along with their 12-month growing season. Includes short descriptions on some of the more beautiful or well-adapted plants to use in the suburban landscape.

The authors also cover specific challenges south FL gardeners face regarding soils, wet/dry periods and bugs. Conversational style and short chapters but thorough. Gets you to want to go outside and start planting! Excellent!

The Frontier Mission and Social Transformation in Western Honduras deals with the interaction between Mercedarian missionaries and the indigenous Lenca Indian population of western Honduras during the early sixteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries. Updated in 1999 !.......2002-07-25

We have been using Marilyn Wood's Wonderful Weekends Copyright 1984, 1987 and enjoyed it very, very much. Right from the first trip, we knew we had a winner. The paperback is dog earred, paperclipped, underlined in red and there are pencil and ink notes in all the margins. It is a truly wonderful book but needed updating.

We purchased the "All New Fourth Edition!" of Wonderful Weekends thinking it would have the best of the previous edition, plus new places to explore minus the places that are no longer there.

Not so! Several of the areas that we looked up included restaurants that have not been there in 2 or 3 years. One of the B&B's has had new owners for years and the listing shows the old owners' story and names.

We will stick with our original 1984-l987 version and use the new one for backup with each trip. Hopefully, there will be some New information in this Fourth Edition.

This was a lesson to me that when I look for updates for books of this type, it would be a good idea to find out the date of the update before making a purchase.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Unmanned/uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) are an increasingly important part of military operations throughout the world. However there is no consensus about who should fly these aircraft. A United States Air Force (USAF) Corona South four-star general officer summit in 1997 resulted in tasking the Air Force Research Laboratory to conduct a study to compare the speed and accuracy with which various groups of pilots could learn to fly the RQ-1A predator UAV. This study primarily addressed stick-and-rudder skills; we did not measure such operationally relevant factors as communication skills, command experience, and knowledge of combat operations. Seven groups of military and civilian pilots, varying in amount and kind of flying experience, completed a series of multimedia tutorials on principles of flight and procedures for operating the Predator, then flew a high-fidelity RQ-1A simulator. Each participant flew basic maneuvers and landings (including difficult crosswind landings) until a very high standard of aircraft control performance was achieved, then flew 30 reconnaissance scenarios. During this time, detailed measures of performance were continuously and automatically recorded. The results show that, though Predator pilots performed best (and nonpilots performed worst), Air Force T-38 graduates and civilian pilots with single- engine instrument training performed nearly as well as a group of highly experienced military pilots assigned (but not yet trained) to fly Predator.

Busath is one the most talented commercial photographers of our time. This book has some of the most gorgeous pictures of the metropolitan city surrounded by the majestic Wasatch mountains. A must have for anyone interested in The West and awe-inspiring photography.
