Book Description
If wisdom can be defined as common sense that has withstood the test of time, then Sensible Cruising is a wise book.
It explains:
- Why a sensible cruise is affordable to almost anyone.
- Why the boat of choice for most cruisers is under 35 feet.
- Why lowering the cost doesn't devalue the cruise.
- How simplicity minimizes insulation from the experience.
- How to think in terms of how little, not how much, is really required.
Drawing heavily on the philosophy of the sage of Walden Pond, this book is a gentle guide to the art of commonsense cruising which, in hardcover, was one of the 10 best-selling sailing books of all time. Now available for the first time in paperback, Sensible Cruising, a former main selection of the Dolphin Book Club, is more pertinent than ever during this time of economic retrenchment.
"No truer American existed than Thoreau . . . there was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men . . . [with] power of description and literary excellence . . . he chose to be rich by making his wants few, and supplying them himself . . . "--Ralph Waldo Emerson
"I never would have imagined that Thoreau's philosophy could be so aptly applied to anything as disparate as cruising."--Dr. Walter Harding, author and Secretary of the Thoreau Society
"At sea, I learned how little a person needs, not how much."--Robin Lee Graham, Circumnavigator and author of Dove
"One of the wonderful things about the cruising life is that it teaches you how little you can get along on, that to lead a fulfilling life it is not necessary to have a big pile of bucks. This may have been self-evident to Thoreau before the day of mass media, but in our modern environment it is a philosophy that is difficult to come by.
Your readers should be aware that being judicious in their purchases can be financially rewarding at the end. We have always treated our boats as investments, and made money, on all of them."--Steve Dashew, Circumnavigator, and author of Bluewater Handbook and The Circumnavigator's Handbook
It does look sometimes as if the world were on its last legs. How many there are whose principal employment is is nowadays to eat their meals and go to the post-office."--Henry David Thoreau
What others say about this book:
"This is one of the most intriguing and original books on cruising to appear in a long time . . . an admirably practical guide . . . with a delightful sense of humor . . . "--John Rousmaniere, author of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, The Sailing Lifestyle, Fastnet Force 10, and The Golden Pastime: A New History of Yachting
"For anyone contemplating a prolonged sail . . . this book makes an excellent companion, full of sensible advice on the fine art of making-do when things don't go quite as expected."--Soundings
"Sensible Cruising is a refreshing change, written for those of us who dream of modest goals. Every cruising sailor, ambitious or unambitious, should read and treasure this memorable volume."--Sailing
"Casey and Hackler suck the very marrow of life from Henry David Thoreau's writings to build a case for the small cruiser. The perfect instigation to get procrastinators and naysayers off the pot and over the horizon."--Dan Spurr, Senior Editor, Cruising World, and author of Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat
Customer Reviews:
From one who became a cruiser.......2006-11-15
This book is one of my favorites, and I read a LOT of books. It is educational, inspirational, entertaining, and just plain fun. My copy is dog-eared, worn, and obviously repeatedly read. I have written a detailed review on SailingIsLife, so I won't repeat all that here.
All I can say is that this book not only educated and entertained me, it solidified my dreams about cruising to the point that my wife and I, and now several friends, have become real cruisers. Not the "World Cruisers" most people think of, but Practical Cruisers, as described in this book, who have taken a number of shorter cruises and who continue to take longer and more diverse cruises as our knowledge and confidence increase.
Whether it inspires you to cruise, or simply entertains and enthralls you, it is a book well worth reading, and reading again.
Excellent Sailboat Cruising Advice and Perspective.......2004-05-15
Casey offers very practical advice in selecting and outfitting a small, live-aboard sailboat for cruising on a modest budget. It provided a realistic and comprehensive guide to prepare the person for the experience too. I found this book a great resource when preparing a boat and my family to sail from Oregon to Mexico.
It is appropriate for readers who want to go sailboat cruising during regular vacations as well as those who are considering more extended voyages. If you are looking for another book to feed a dream to go sailboat cruising, this book is an excellent choice. It may also help you to realize that enjoying a satisfying piece of your dream may be more easily realized than you had previously thought possible.
Turning Point.......2003-05-21
"Sensible Cruising" convinced me to buy a vintage 1972 Catalina 22' sailboat (swing keel) for $1000 (includes four sails, cushions, etc., but no trailer, nor outboard, which I didn't want anyway) ... the boat is in immaculate condition and is a fast, easy to sail, sailboat... it is moored in a marina along the Texas gulf coast ... best buy and best decision in recent memory! The authors' advice: to buy an affordable boat and GO SAILING was the 'turning point' in my sailing adventures! A dream come true ... there's nothing like messing about in boats!!! ONE HAPPY SAILOR, "Cap'n" Howard Jones
Finally..........2003-04-15
A cruising book for regular people. A must-read for those of us who have or plan to have a reasonably seaworthy 25ish-30ish foot sailboat and want to go on a reasonable sabbatical cruise for a reasonable amount of time, i.e. weeks or months. Much needed coverage of the middle ground between buying a hundred-thousand dollar yacht and sailing thrice around the world for 10 years, and weekend lake-camping in daysailers. The authors even address the sticky issues of leaving & returning, motivating us to go and explaining how life may be changed by a successful cruise. The hypothetical ICW-Bahamas cruise is $19.95 worth of info alone. Don't let the thoroeau quotes put you off; this is a very practical book.
What a relief.......2002-10-02
What a relief to find a knowledgeable, experienced cruiser that doesn't expect you to spend a fortune to go cruising. His position is "whatever cruiser you have will do just fine," unlike some authors that project you need a Swan or similar. Furthermore, Casey encourages all of us to "get out there and do it," stop procrastinating and make the leap.
Book Description
Nonfiction is in the facts. Creative nonfiction is in the telling. It reads like fiction, but stays loyal to the truth. Philip Gerard walks this fine line with confidence, style, and utter zeal, looking at the world with a reporter's unflinching eye and offering it up with all the skill of a master storyteller. With the same clarity and passion, Gerard offers instruction and advice to help aspiring and experienced writers create pieces so compelling, so engaging, that readers will never forget them.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide book.......2007-01-07
I was using this book as the support text for an online course with Writers Online Workshops, but would have been happy to have the book on its own. The author leads the reader to think carefully about the differences between fiction and nonfiction, and what is unique about creative nonfiction. There are a remarkable number of useful sections including those on form, interviews, and revising. I have followed the chapter on revising and found it to be the most useful information to date to improve my own creative nonfiction writing.
Painfully boring.......2006-03-07
Last week, I happened to come across this book in the library. As I had recently bought "Writing a Book that Makes a Difference" and "Writing Creative Nonfiction: Instruction and Insights from Teachers of the Associated Writing Programs" by the same author, I thought it would be good to read this book to get a feel of what's in store when I finally get down to reading my own books.
Gosh! I hope the other two books are better than this one. I tried hard to read this book, but I had to give up finally. Call me a philistine, but I just could not "get into it" (I'm at a loss with words to describe how this book simply could not grip my attention).
Dumbed down.......2003-11-28
I've used this book in the classroom, mainly because it was one of the only texts available on cnf. However, I really dislike this book for its dumbed-down approach. Whazzup with that, Phil? Most of your audience for this book would be those in an academic setting...so why not write with some real insight? You manage to make this fascinating genre sound dull and stodgy...middle-agey...ZZZZzzzzZZZzzz...
The problem with cnf, in general, is that so few good texts are available for those who teach creative writing. Even the AWP book with co-editors Carolyn Forche and good old Philip Gerard is second rate. It doesn't have NEARLY enough essays on the how-to's of writing cnf, and includes some cnf essays that are wildly inappropriate, as if the editors had to flesh out the volume and just crammed some stuff in at the last minute. If someone doesn't compile a better cnf textbook, I'm gonna have to do it myself. :-(
Exceptional tool for writers.......2000-11-04
Creative Nonfiction is an invaluable resource for writers of reality-based material. I am a television producer and college film professor who specializes in documentary production. While this book is crafted for a print writer, it is by far the best resource I have found for a complete review of the nonfiction creative process. No film or television how-tos come close to the depth and insight of Gerard's work. From formulating an idea to conducting an interview, from structuring a story to creating suspense, Gerard has articulated priceless insight to a process that is too often intuitive and hard to communicate. A stunning achievement.
A Narrow View of Creative Nonfiction.......1999-01-06
This is not a comprehensive book about creative nonfiction. Instead, Gerard has a very narrow view of the field, limiting it almost exclusively to literary journalism. Many types of creative nonfiction (humor, reviews, opinion pieces, personal essays) are all but overlooked in this book. If you are interested in a more comprehensive treatment of creative nonfiction, look elsewhere. I would highly recommend Lynn Bloom's Fact & Artifact. If your primary interest is in literary journalism, you might want to read this book. However, Gerard does not just have a bias towards literary journalism, he also has a bias towards specific topics. Specifically, he writes almost entirely about war, Hemingway, risky activities, and nature. If you share most or all of his interests, you may be satisfied with this book. Otherwise, you might want to try reading something else.

No words, just pictures.......2000-06-27
This book is a source for visual designers, architects, and interior decorators. It is a reproduction of the plates of a larger theoretical opus Hessemer published around 1840, collecting interesting mostly geometric designs from Italy and Egypt. This has no text at all after the publishers note explaining this, and a list of the plates and their sources, followed by 120 pages of color plates, many with multiple designs. The reproductions of the old plates have lost something through the generations, and aren't particularly accurate regarding the details being presented. When you actually go to Italy and see these things, the reds will pop your eyes out. Docked a star because it's pretty dull here. A clever people would scan the images and alter the colors both to match their needs and to approach the correct clarity and intensity.
The publisher claims some restrictions on rights to reproduce the designs: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project", and, "reproduction of any illustration by any of the graphic service [...] is prohibited." You'd think anything published in 1840 would be Public Domain by now.
We may use the 4th down on plate 96 (parts of the mosaic bands on the Duomo of Florence) in our entry hall.

A good start for firefighting collector's.......2001-04-01
I recently started collecting antique firefighting equipment which goes along with my career as a firefighter. As a beginner it is difficult to get an idea of how much these collectibles are worth. I was recently in an antique mall in Nebraska when I ran across Andrew Gurka's book which I am currently writing this review on. As I was browsing the pages of his book I realized I had just looked at several items which were very similar to some pictures in the book and I also noticed that the prices were very reasonable compared to the suggested values in the book. Needless to say, I purchased the items and the book which I refer to every time I search for a new item. It is filled with a variety of items from A-Z and lists suggested values for the items which you can use as a comparison for the items you are interested in. The prices shown in the book are from 1996 so you should keep that in mind when you are looking at collectibles. This is definately the book for the beginning collector.

Book Description
This is the compelling yet disturbing story of Corbett Mack (1892–1974), an opiate addict who was a member of the Nuumuu (Numa), or Northern Paiute. The Northern Paiute are best known as the people who produced Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet whose revitalistic teachings swept the Indian world in the 1890s. Mack is from the generation following the collapse of the Ghost Dance religion, a generation of Nomogweta or “half-breeds” (also called “stolen children”)—Paiute of mixed ancestry who were raised in an increasingly bicultural world and who fell into virtual peonage to white (often Italian) potato farmers.
Around the turn of the century, the use of opium became widespread among the Paiute, adopted from equally victimized Chinese laborers with whom they worked closely in the fields. The story of Corbett Mack is an uncompromising account of a harsh and sometimes traumatic life that was typical of an entire generation of Paiute. It was a life born out of the turmoil and humiliation of an Indian boarding school, troubled by opiate addiction, bound to constant labor in the fields, yet nonetheless made meaningful through the perseverance of Paiute cultural traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I thougt it was..........2000-01-10
This is the story of Corbett Mack, a "Stolen Child" (half blood) of the Northern Paiute of the late 1800's. It tells the story in his own words of what it was like to be unaccepted in the white world nor the Indian world. The plight of the Notrhern Paiute after the arrival of the whiteman. He became an alcohol and opiate addict, and lead a tragic life that was somewhat typical of Native Americans during that time.
Judging the book by it's title I had hoped it was about the life of the Northern Paiute prior to white man's arrival. A good book for this purpose is "Indians of The Plateau and Great Basin" by Victoria Sherrow.
