Book Description
Tennis is undoubtedly one of the most difficult games to play well. Players participating on a regular basis occasionally have a very good outing, but more often find themselves handicapped by a self-destructive mental game. Playing aggressively, but within oneself, is a daunting task. Few players understand how emotional and mental control have everything to do with managing one's physical, technical and tactical skills in an effective manner. But that hidden secret is about to become public, as career tennis pro Jak Beardsworth has created a new guide to introduce all players to their personal best.
"More Than Just the Strokes: Personal Best Tennis in Clubland and Beyond" is not just another book about technical tennis tips and tricks. Rather, it is a strategic guide to conquering any tennis player's greatest nemesis: himself. Presented in sections that cover the physical, technical, tactical, mental and emotional make-up of the sport, "More Than Just the Strokes" is already garnering praise from those who know the sport best.
Learn to trust your game. Don't panic. Be intense and relaxed at the same time. Be at one with the game; don't fight it. All of these are lessons that play an integral part of a winning tennis game, and Jak Beardsworth provides the tools to guide every player to their personal best. Whether a beginner or a professional, there is always room for improvement and as such, "More Than Just the Strokes" is required reading for any tennis library.

A Must Read.......2006-10-22
We all pretty much know what we want to accomplish on the court. More Than Just The Strokes however, teaches you how really "seeing it" leads to "doing it". Whether you're battling a small technical glitch, self induced demons on your court, or an ineffective strategy, Jak's professional experience and insight teaches you how to strike the perfect merger between a technical mind set and mindful technique. The result: winning play instead of playing to win. The content is easy to understand and a welcome alternative to the traditional just hitting yet another thousand balls to maybe get the same result. Your time on the court will never feel more satisfying. A delightful, inspiring "must read" for all levels of players.
This book is terrific!.......2006-03-09
For any player who wants to improve or enjoy the game more, Jak's book is a must.It offers many practical tips for singles and doubles. The sections on developing topsin, effective breathing during a match, club competition doubles strategies and practice routines are alone worth the price.
I have played for more than 30 yrs, have had many lessons and gone to tennis camps from Vermont to Florida. Jak's book has given me more stuff to work on, and to look forward to using in a match, than a lot of these other instructions.
Buy This Book!.......2005-11-07
More Than Just The Stokes Is absolutely the best tennis insructional book I have ever read.It is not a fancy book in terms of glossy and impressive pictures but the "meat and potatoes" of tennis instruction is there in SPADES!
I particularly enjoyed and my game has benefited from the areas of the book covering volleys, singles strategy and watching the ball.
This book is an absolute must read for anyone trying to improve their game. I believe that tennis instuctors would benefit from buying this book in bulk for their students.
Give it a try.You won't be disapointed!

The Best!.......2005-08-12
I started playing tennis 10 years ago after a lifetime of playing "other" sports, including competing at the collegiate level in football and wrestling. I am currently a 4.5 NTRP level player. I have become addicted to tennis, probably as a result of the marked need for contrasting physical and mental perspectives which I find so challenging and (potentially) rewarding. This book addresses that contrast more vividly than any book on sports to which I have ever been exposed. The ongoing internal battle to control your emotions in tennis is, in my opinion, the most difficult struggle one encounters on the court. Beardsworth is the Zen master of tennis, as he helps all us warriors become more focused and masterful on the courts. This book is worth every penny for those who are interested in improving the satisfaction they get from the sport (and it will generate a lot more wins as well!). It is chock full of specific tips that I have been using again and again on the road to improvement. I highly recommend it!
Incredible!.......2005-07-11
I've been playing tennis my whole life and have read over 30 tennis books. I can say with absolute confidence that this book is the most user-friendly, concise, readable tennis guide I have ever read. Beardsworth makes the painfully abstract elements of stroke mechanics easy to visualize. [I should add that I own nearly every technique manual on the market and have never been inspired to write a review].
The author does not stop at stroke production, he has a remarkable ability to unpack the mental elements of the game and he provides entertaining information about the current tennis culture (at the club and pro level).
What makes this book truly unique, however, is the author's voice. He has a charismatic, snappy prose that makes for effortless reading. One can tell that this guy has been in the tennis business forever (he has seen it all). His anecdotes and insights are priceless; his understanding of the game -- the whole game -- is remarkable. Buy this book.

It works I guess.......2007-10-04
Came packaged in cardboard so i thought it would be in good condition, but i take off the cardboard packaging and find that there are little tears on the front and back covers and even a stain on the front cover. poor quality for a "new" item
Perfect.......2007-06-09
So it turns out my AP history teacher uses the multiple choice questions from this book for our tests. This is awesome! I only wish I had ordered it sooner because now its June and all I can use it for is studying for the final. ( Which I will now ace.)
The American Pageant Guidebook.......2006-11-04
The workbook was in perfect condition and arrived in a short period of time. Thanks!
Very Helpful Resource.......2006-07-05
As an AP U.S. History teacher, I have noticed many students struggle as they try to get meaningful information from their history textbooks. This 13th edition Guidebook for American Pageant offers students multiple ways of getting pertinent details from the text via multiple choice, identification, map skills questions, and short essay questions. Although not exceptional, this consumable is a helpful resource for students.
A Useful Study Guide for American Pageant, 11th Edition........2004-09-02
As an AP teacher for over a decade, I can safely recommend this supplement to the 11th edition of American Pageant textbook. As earlier reviewers mentioned this guide is not intended to replace reading the textbook nor does it have an answer key. It is, however, an effective way for a student to review and test him or herself over the material in the textbook. The true/false and multiple choice questions are the same ones available at the hmco.com website. Serious AP students whose classes use American Pageant should strongly consider buying this guide.
Customer Reviews:
Well written guidebook.......2000-11-14
I am curently a student at Gallatin High School, where i am engaged in an Advanced Placement American History class. I have found this book to be beneficial in helping me study. Although i would have liked it to review the chapter more rather than only having questions on the reading. Overall this book is a good study tool for taking an American History class. NOTE this book will be useless if you do not have the textbook.
Book Description
Supported by colorful anecdotes, first-person quotations, and its trademark wit, The American Pageant is one of the most readable, popular, and effective American history textbooks available.
Pedagogy includes chapter-ending chronologies, numerous interesting quotes from historical figures, and incisive part openers that contextualize six major periods in American history. The Appendix includes "Suggested Readings" for every chapter, an annotated Constitution of the United States with page references, and an extensive statistical profile of the United States.
Customer Reviews:
easy to read but too much useless info .......2007-08-19
I can honestly say that reading/learning this book thoroughly helped me get a 4 on the AP exam. It was easy to read too.
However, it was pretty annoying to sift through A LOT of useless information in the book. There was one chapter where they took up a fourth of a page to describe Andrew Jackson's HAIR COLOR and physical features.
In the chapter about the salem witch trials, they actually felt it necessary to tell you that 2 dogs died in the witch hunt.
etc.
Slightly dissapointing........2007-07-27
Although this textbook serves as a good introduction to US History, it is difficult to gather much actual information from the text. In an attempt to increase readability, the authors rarely mention dates or locations of important events, leading to confusion. A timeline at the end of each chapter helps to alleviate this problem, but it is nevertheless annoying. On the plus side, many small jokes are inserted throughout the chapters and help the reader to stay awake while reading about the especially boring parts of our country's history
waste of time.......2007-03-27
I am using The American Pageant in my AP US History class and feel that my knowledge of history is not as good as it could be, and I am very underprepared for the AP test because of "Pageant" being my only source of the information.
The book is frustrating. It uses roundabout language instead of giving you the facts (for instance, saying "every elected occupant of the White House" instead of "every president"). It is very difficult to figure out what it is trying to tell you.
The book is very biased, and is trying to be something it cannot. I'd prefer something straightforward.
Terrible.......2007-01-26
This is one of the worst textbooks i have ever used. The book uses lame metaphors. The style of writing is also horrible. It is very hard to understand and has a lot of "fluff" information. I do not suggest any AP US history students to read this for the AP exam.
Sophomore AP History Student.......2006-03-12
I honestly do not think that I am very good at United States History (still got an A+) and being that it is now two months before the May AP Season, I can tell you with confidence that after reading the 1070 pages, my knowledge of US History is flimy. Of course, I plan on going back and reading teh book again and buying the Princeton Review's prep book, but I cannot tell yet for sure how well the book has done for me.
I find several things about this book that annoys me somewhat, but then again deems teh book stimulating and captivating...first of all, all of the metaphors that constantly plague the sentences will inevitably thwart full comprehension of any student seriously studying the text. I agree that the task of making history fun should be taken by the teacher. Thus this consistent, never faltering usage of metaphors and such has to have a reason for being there, which is that the authors are slightly subjective. Again, a history book should be objective.
There is then the positive effect of laid-back diction. Instead of feeling like one is merely reading an encyclopedia, a student may actually perceive the American Pageant as a story, a story of the growth of America. From her infant days with the Pilgrims and Virginians to her failings with the Vietnam War and Nixon Watergate scandal, the reader feels a sense of attachment with history.
Book Description

Decoupage patterns.......2007-02-14
These are pretty and colorful patterns. They are "dated" in the sense that they are patterns that were popular probably a century ago. Some of this I find odd (like children's heads popping out of flowers and fruits) but there aren't too many of those and maybe some people like children "emerging" from fruits and flowers! All around a good selection, I would think most people would find much to their liking in these designs.
Fabulous colour.......2005-05-22
I am a huge fan of Carol Belanger Grafton, and this book of images is part of the reason why. The images are beautifully rendered, very clear, and have magnificent colour. I am using these, and others of hers, for both decoupage and scrapbooking. They are so lovely that just paging through the book is inspiring.
A beautiful resource!.......2004-12-31
Ms Grafton's book is an excellent and colorful resource that all lovers of decoupage must own. The size of the graphics vary and the images are usually quite clear and colorful. There is no shortage of colors, sizes, shapes, and varieties of fruits and flowers. The quality of the paper is glossy and easy to cut and paste. I highly recommend this book.
packed with images.......2003-02-09
This book has 305 images to choose from. Lots of strong vibrant colors, pretty good quality in terms of being clear (not blurry), some have people faces in them (e.g. flowers with people faces in the center), they range in size from 1" to 1/4 page in size. Some really pretty pansy images. I'm finding it to be a really good resource.

One of the best........2003-02-06
One of the best Cham books out there for beginners. Chameleon husbandry Information is hard to find in book form. I as one of the above reviewers stated also have all the cham books on husbandry on amazon[.com], and this one is the best. I recommend finding a breeder and talking to them, that is the only way to get the most up to date info on chameleon care.
The Definitive Book on Chameleon Husbandry.......2001-12-08
If you are a new chameleon hobbiest owner or are about to take that plunge into chameleon ownership, this is the ONLY book you will need.
It covers feeding, caging, care specific to many different and exotic species, and basic medical information as well. The book is well written and covers topics thoroughly. The pictures are superb and the author's personal experience keeping chameleons and other herps is very reassuring and lends to her credibility. I wish I had got this book first, if I had, I would have never bought the deVosjoli or Bartlett books. I spent way more than twice the cost of Davison's book buying 5 or 6 other books about chameleons--all of which have outdated, incorrect and/or incomplete information.
I WAS LOOKING FOR THE QUINESSENTIAL BOOK, WRITTEN FOR THE HOBBIEST, ON THE HUSBANDRY (aka CARE) OF CHAMELEONS.....I OWN EVERY ONE OF THE BOOKS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COM IF YOU DO A SEARCH FOR "CHAMELEON" OR "CHAMELEONS" BUT, I PROMISE YOU, NONE COMPARE TO LINDA DAVISON'S BOOK! SHE HAS GIVEN US A BOOK THAT IS AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN GET TO FINDING THE PROVERBIAL DEFINITIVE BOOK.
P.S. If you are a chameleon owner and you do NOT have this book, no kidding, you do NOT know what you are missing!
top notch book.......2001-09-18
this is the book to get. what more can be said. seems pricey but it is worth every penny.
Best Information you could buy!.......2001-07-13
I have purchased five books on chameleons in preparation for buying one as a pet. I found that several of the books contained conflicting information or not enough. This book was full of accurate and helpful information. I confirmed this with a local breeder! I have refered to this book quite a bit. Buy this book first!
The Only Book You'll Need.......2001-02-01
I have all the chameleon books currently available and this is the one I always go to for information. I have bred my Veiled Chameleons and have treated quite a few health problems using the information found in this book. This should be the first book you buy when you are thinking of owning these wonderful animals.

Good information on the origination and evolution of the Uncle Sam character.
Well researched and easy to browse.

With a better than average knowledge of Uncle Sam collectibles, I searched for specific information in this book and was able to easily locate what I needed. Very good photography. A prized addition to my collection of art books.
Book Description
Back in print after fifty years
Old Herbaceous is a classic British novel of the garden, with a title character as outsized and unforgettable as P. G. Wodehouse’s immortal butler, Jeeves. Born at the dusk of the Victorian era, Bert Pinnegar, an awkward orphan child with one leg a tad longer than the other, rises from inauspicious schoolboy days spent picking wildflowers and dodging angry farmers to become the legendary head gardener “Old Herbaceous,” the most esteemed flower-show judge in the county and a famed horticultural wizard capable of producing dazzling April strawberries from the greenhouse and the exact morning glories his Lady spies on the French Riviera, “so blue, so blue it positively hurts.” Sprinkled with nuggets of gardening wisdom, Old Herbaceous is a witty comic portrait of the most archetypal—and crotchety—head gardener ever to plant a row of bulbs at a British country house.
This Modern Library edition is published with a new Introduction by
Penelope Hobhouse, a renowned garden designer and lecturer and the author of numerous gardening books.
Book Description
Since the 1960s, radical sociology has had far more influence on mainstream sociology than many observers imagine. This book pairs seminal articles with new reflective essays written by the founders of progressive sociology, including Fred Block, Edna Bonacich, Samuel Bowles, Herbert Gintis, Val Burris, G. William Domhoff, Richard Flacks, Harvey Molotch, Goran Therborn, and Erik Olin Wright.
The book highlights the wider impact of radical sociology and shows how the work of these and other writers has continued to influence sociology's continuing interest in capitalism, class, race, gender, power, and progressive social change. It also describes future directions for a critical sociology relevant to a multicultural and global world.

On the basis of a mere handful of issues, The Dolphin and The Fleuron established an international reputation among professionals, scholars, and booklovers with an interest in fine bookmaking and the history of printing, illustration, and typography. Although the collected issues may be found in library collections, no complete listing of their contents has been available until now. Jeanne Somers' comprehensive index fills this gap, providing access in four separate sections to authors and titles, illustrations, subjects, and advertisements.

Book Description
Spreadin' Rhythm Around: Black Popular Songwriters, 1880-1930 is a classic work on a little-studied subject in American music history: the contribution of African-American songwriters to the world of popular song. Hailed by Publishers Weekly as "thoroughly researched and entertainingly written," this work documents the careers of songwriters like James A. Bland ("Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny")Bert Williams ("Nobody"), W. C. Handy ("St. Louis Blues"), Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake ("I'm Just Wild About Harry"), and many more. Richly illustrated with rare photographs from sheet music, newspapers, and other unique sources, the book documents an entire era of performance when black singers, dancers, and actors were active on the New York stage.
In sheer depth of research, new information, and full coverage, Spreadin' Rhythm Around offers a comprehensive picture of the contributions of black musicians to American popular song. For anyone interested in the history of jazz, pop song, or Broadway, this book will be a revelation.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous account of struggle and success.......2000-08-11
Coauthors David A. Jasen and Gene Jones should be declared national treasures. Along with their excellent account "That American Rag," published by Schirmer Books, they have given us
from the same publishing house.
Reading this fabulous account of so many talented Blacks hitting their heads against the stone wall of prejudice at almost every turn, I was fascinated, sad, and increasingly angry at story after story about composer after composer, lyricist after lyricist, who had so much to offer and and were for the most part obliged to perpetuate the stereotypical image imposed upon them and their people. Now and then, a bright light breaks through as with the story of James Resse Europe's Clef Club, a union of black musicians that managed (with the help of Irene and Vernon Castle) to make their orchestras and bands those of choice by white high society. You will be equally riveted to the other accounts of men like James A. Bland, Bert Williams, W.C. Handy, Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake, and others some more familiar and less familiar to most readers.
Many of the defeats described are not necessarily the result of racism. When one of the personalities involved was at fault through his own temper or poor judgment, the authors do not shirk in pointing out where the blame lies. They also do something I found lacking in their other book: when they say how good or innovative a song was, they give reasons in musical terms for that judgment.
On the other hand, whereas their other book has amazingly concise and full appendices of works, dates, publishers, and so on, this book has none. I would greatly have appreciated a list of the all the shows mentioned in the text in chronological order. Perhaps a later edition will include this.
Glad That They Were "Spreadin' Rhythm Around".......1999-12-01
The complete source for information in this area. Proves to be an indispensable research guide. The impressive data, design, and layout are all first-rate. Photos and pix are priceless. A presentation of great beauty and charm. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Time magazine made Bob Marley's impact strikingly clear when it named Exodus the most important album of the 20th century. Throughout his life and perhaps even more since his death in 1981 at the age of 36, Marley's music has demonstrated a unique ability to combine with almost any cultural setting, no matter how different the elements might at first appear. Through his adaptable, yet enduring musical messages, he represents an especially articulate type of singer-songwriter. Marley released a large quantity of introspective, autobiographical material at the height of his success and it is thus only in a work such as this--in which the artist is investigated through his recorded output--that one can understand who this great man truly was and what he hoped to achieve through his life and music. The Words and Music of Bob Marley investigates Marley's creative output chronologically and provides complementary biographical information where it is relevant and helpful. Themes discussed throughout the book include protest, revolution, love, hate, biblical concepts, and Rastafari culture.

Any definitive Marley collection needs this........2007-06-05
Reggae singer Bob Marley died before he was 40, but his music lives on - and his album Exodus was deemed by Time Magazine the most important of the 20th century, so THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF BOB MARLEY is certain to be an ongoing, popular pick for any college-level music library serious about representing lasting artists. A chronological arrangement provides a blend of biography and music analysis, following the developing themes of Marley's works and presenting the histories of his albums and songs which made headlines and drew important links between new and traditional concepts. Any definitive Marley collection needs this.
